Is Santorum Starting to ‘Catch Fire’ in Iowa?

Is It Santorums Turn Next in Iowa?

(The Blaze/AP) In a presidential campaign marked by sharp rises and falls, Republican Rick Santorum has experienced neither.

“I’m counting on the people of Iowa to catch fire for me,” the former Pennsylvania senator, who described himself as a “strong conviction conservative,” said Thursday during a debate with his rivals. “Iowans are beginning to respond.”

His dogged courting of Iowans the old-fashioned way — campaigning in living rooms, coffee shops and town squares — may be starting to pay off and at just the right time, as Iowa’s Jan. 3 presidential caucuses approach.

“Rick Santorum is the best-kept secret in the campaign,” said Tom Clark, a West Des Moines Republican and one of about 150 people who came to hear the candidate at a suburban Des Moines restaurant this past week. Clark left the event as a Santorum supporter prepared to volunteer for him, despite this concern: “I just don’t know if he can win.”

That worry could be why Santorum remains near the back of the pack in national GOP surveys. He also trails former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Rep. Ron Paul in Iowa even though he has been the most aggressive campaigner in the leadoff caucus state. He’s visited all 99 counties and held 350 campaign events.

Santorum acknowledges that not all gatherings have been as lively as the recent one at the Machine Shed restaurant in Urbandale.

He recalls the September day in quiet Red Oak when exactly one GOP activist, the Guthrie County chairwoman, showed up to meet him. He compared his Iowa effort to his underdog campaign in 1990 for the U.S. House, when he knocked on thousands of doors. He won.

“I’m sort of the guy at the dance, when the girls walk in they sort of walk by, and they take a few turns at the dance hall with the guys that are a little better looking, a little flashier, a little more bling,” he told about 300 Nationwide Insurance employees in Des Moines this past week. “But at the end of the evening, old steady Eddie’s there. He’s the guy you want to bring home to mom and dad.”

Steady is right. Santorum has survived where others have not.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, once viewed as a serious candidate to win the caucuses, and businessman Herman Cain, who led in Iowa polls in October, have dropped from the race. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and Texas Gov. Rick Perry enjoyed sharp rises in support upon entering the contest, only to plummet later. They’re now trying to claw their way back up.

Santorum’s struggle has been to expand his steady base.

It’s not been easy.

He lacks the national standing of Romney, who ran unsuccessfully for the nomination in 2008, and the grass-roots libertarian-leaning network that’s backing Paul.

But Santorum is a favorite of social conservatives, who count him as a crusader for their causes. A crowd of 1,000 cheered loudly and rose when Santorum was introduced at a Des Moines forum on Thursday sponsored by opponents of abortion rights.

The response was more spontaneous and jubilant than that for Bachmann, Gingrich or Perry, and was a reminder that Santorum was no stranger to this crowd.

A dogged opponent of abortion rights during his two terms in the Senate, Santorum told the audience in the old downtown theater that there was no disconnecting social issues such as marriage and abortion from the economy and other national priorities.

“This country is based on a moral foundation,” Santorum said. “If we don’t get the moral issues right, we will never get the economic or foreign policy issues right.”

It’s that pitch that has Iowans starting to line up behind Santorum.

“He knows what he’s talking about,” said Pat Pederson, a Republican from Adel who attended Santorum’s restaurant event Thursday. “He’s conservative in his policies, but frankly, has a lot to say on the economy and national security.”

Santorum picked up an endorsement this month from a statewide elected official in Iowa, a rarity in this fluid campaign. It came from newly elected Secretary of State Matt Schultz, an up-and-comer in Iowa GOP politics.

Santorum also has also won the support of some evangelical pastors.

Is It Santorums Turn Next in Iowa? One is Cary Gordon, a Sioux City minister who led the effort to oppose the retention of three Iowa Supreme Court judges last year in light of that court’s ruling to allow gay marriage in Iowa. A second is Rev. Terry Amann, from one of the Des Moines area’s most politically active evangelical churches.Santorum isn’t going on TV with campaign advertisements, which is a sign of a thin campaign fundraising account. But a political action committee that is supporting his candidacy but is unaffiliated with the campaign began airing ads this past week.

They could provide lift in a state where a surprisingly strong finish could propel him into the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 10, the next context in the race.

He is poised to surprise in an Iowa campaign where Perry is making a late charge with more than $1 million in advertising in the closing weeks.

“Santorum is all organization. There’s nothing to catapult him,” said John Stineman, who ran Steve Forbes 2000 Iowa campaign. “He has the ability to over-perform, but that‘s all he’s got unless he gets hot, and time is running out.

TEA has 3 choices left. Bachman,Santorum or even Perry.Any other and the battle we won in 2010 with winning the House will be a disservice to that great win.Why settle for middle of the road phonies?Or in Paul’s case,a delusional nominee?

Sen. Santorum HAS been a steady voice for Conservatives, both socially and economically. I like what he has to say, and with Newt declaring himself a Wilsonian Politk, Romney too being too moderate for me, Cain dropped out, Paul being the split personality mad-hatter (I like about half of what he says), M.Bachman having a bit of a fanatical gleam in her eye, and Perry having memory losses, I‘m pleased he’s starting to catch fire. If it were held today, I‘m thinking I’d vote for Santorum. (not that my opinion matters to anyone but me)

There is only one real Tea Candidate, Ron Paul. Paul started the Tea back on Dec.16, 2007, Bachman decided to run under the Tea after seeing the power of the movement last year. She is using the Tea after it became popular for her own ends. Santorum does not have the values of Tea. Neither adhere to the Constitution, small government and Individual Liberty like Paul does. I would say Bachman is Constitutional about 55% and Santorum about 40%. Paul os the only one that is 100% Canstitutionally sound in his values. The only true Tea choice is Ron Paul 2012.

It’s disappointing to see any “Conservative” support Romney or Gingrich, who are so clearly both Progressives.

It’s scary to see any “Conservative” support Paul, who is so clearly to the Left of Obama when it comes to foreign policy – specifically Iran and Israel.

I’ve been curious about Santorum. I don’t want another right-wing Progressive telling me what my morality will be through legislation. I do want a Constitutional Conservative to get Government out of business – my personal business and my economics. I’m not sure where Santorum lives on that spectrum.

I think Rick is going to be kept in the race somehow to keep votes from Michele Bachmann and to garner support for Newt from other conservatives. How? Currently, as deadlines for filing are fast approaching for the later primaries, the campaign is investing time and energy to qualify. Compare with Huntsman who did not manage to meet the Alabama deadline. He should be dropped from the debates if they don’t meet qualification deadlines.

Not voting to pick a winner you vote for who best represents you. If we all turn out and vote my pet rock Rocky could beat Obama, so we should try to nominate the person who best matches our views for the country. Being that none of us take polls or have expansive ground operations in the early states to get a feel for what the people are thinking. We are relying on the media and talking heads to tell us who they think are electable. Which is moronic, the person who gets the most votes wins an election and people can vote for anyone they like, so anyone is electable. If tomorrow everyone said they were going to vote for Santorum, everyone would say he is electable, but people say he is not electable so no one votes for him. That is the problem with trying to pick a winner rather then picking who best matches you. Decide like this, if your one vote could but whomever you vote for in the white house, who would you vote for. If people did that we would elect conservatives and not rinos.

Maybe Sarah will come out and tell us as a Tea Party person who we should vote for. Michelle says she is tea party but I still think she jumped the gun on Sarah and though they were friends initially, appearing together at some events, I wonder if that is still true. I like Santorium. It’s time for a big swing to the right after having had the big swing to the left…maybe that will bring a balance to the center eventually.

I like both Rick Santorum and Michelle Bachman. I simply can not understand how Gingrich and Romney who neither do I trust are ahead of Bachman or Santorum. Gingrich should be a historian or school teacher, Romney needs to go home. I believe I could trust both Santorum or Bachman to lead and defend our country. I think Michelle Bachman is a straight shooter, loves American, and could definitely shake up those corrupt politicos in our dirtiest little city (Washington DC). Go Michelle and Rick! God bless you both, please do not give up the good fight, our country’s future depends on it.

Everything Paul says is tied back to the constitution. If Michelle and Rick could do that with their positions it would be easy for people to vote for them.

I have been a supporter of Rick from the beginning. He was my Congressman and Senator. If you listen to his ansers (when he was given a chance to speak) his answers were the most substantive next to Newt. And he has none of the persoanal or ideological baggage that Newt has.

His biggest problem is his defeat in 2006. Three things did him in that year.

      1. Conservatives were still mad at him for playing the loyal party soldier and backing Specter over Toomey. It was against his better judgment. he should have told Bush to stuff it. Toomey is in now and Pennsylvanians can see what a loser Casey Jr has been. He doesn‘t half fill his father’s shoes.

      2. It was a bad year for Republicans anyways. Next year SHOULD be a good one.

      3. He was beating hard the islamist threat when no one it seemed wanted to hear it. Iran is going to be a looming issue next year. I think he will look like Churchill then having consistently been warning about the danger there.

He could be an excelent nominee.

Santorum and Bachman are the only two candidates that have been consistently conservative in their careers. My dog could beat Obama in 2012!

The people of Iowa and New Hampshire need to respond the way the rank and file of the Republican Party did in 1980 and IGNORE the Main Stream Media’s attempts (and sadly I have to include FOX) to use this term “electable”. Get out there and work for and vote for the people who support your values. People who love what our Founders gave us.

Santorum and Bachman are the only two who demonstrate that love of country and love of the American people on an individual level that I’ve seen. They are the only two who have faith in the American people to rise to what God and our Founders knew we could be. Ron Paul knows it and I think his comments on Leno show that he’s afraid that America is going to wake up to it.

      Shane,
I like a lot about Paul on the economy. But speaking as a vet who has been working terrorism issues for over 20 years, I’ve got to tell you that he is absolutely not the man to be Commander in Chief of the U.S. Armed Forces.

He’d make an excellent Treasury Secretary. I’m making that statement as a sincere compliment. Please take it that way. He has an excellent grasp of the Constitution as relates to what the Federal Government should not be sticking it’s nose into with a number of agencies. But we need more than a one trick pony when it comes to the position of Chief Executive.

Again, I have no animosity toward him and think he’d be a HUGE asset at Treasury. But he has blinders on when it comes to dealing with thugs.

My thoughts…. I am a Veteran and a member of several Veteran Orgs. Every spring, we go to Washington DC with our hat in hand to basically BEG for the funds necessary to keep the VA (Veterans Administration) running. I met with Santorum and he barely had the time of day for us. He humiliated and in the end.. was not a Sen. who helped Vets. It is part of the reason he LOST re-election in our State. No, do what you want but if you show a loathing or disinterest in important Veterans issues… you’ll not get my vote. Not asking anyone to follow me, but will wonder if he gets Veterans backing in his quest. I was asked to give a Vet orgs Endorsement to him and told the national head , I could NOT in good conscience do that. He sent someone else and Santorum still lost. The Org head and I talked and he understands my position. So…have at it…minus my support.

I‘m a vet myself and when I’m asked to speak I try to give special recognition to Vietnam (especially) and Korean War vets because you guys never got the recognition you deserved when you got home and I feel it was easier for us returning than you. But from what I‘ve seen I can’t see Santorum humiliating anyone. I‘m one of his former constituents and I’d like to know more.

Yes. Please elaborate regarding Rick’s demeanor with your VA/vet representation. I need to know more about this. Nothing is more important in this country than our military and national defense. Nothing is more important than administering to veterans who have served. When a veteran fulfills his or her contract to the people of the United States of America, the representatives of the people of the United States of America need to make damn sure the the inverse is true. Veterans deserve what is promised, and deserve the very best. If Rick does not believe so, then he has been scratched off my list, leaving only Bachmann. Further, speaking of Bachmann, I don’t know, I’m just not impressed with her demeanor. I cannot be specific about it, but there is something that I do not like…..; how I do miss Ronald Reagan……

Nothing radical about him unless you look at him from an extremist position. It‘s his house and with his family where you’d want your kids to hang out. @Helicop: How is it “not conservative”, to hold the position that we don’t stick our noses into how other nations run and or defend themselves?

I thought conservatism was about having a government that would keep itself focused on defending OUR borders, and maintaining OUR liberties.

Isn’t it in fact, RADICAL, to think that we should be telling other nations how to run their foreign affairs, while we bathe them in our tax payer STOLEN money, given away by those who run our nation?

And what do we get for the policy that we’ve held?

Do they like us? Or has it made them hate us more?

Did Israel need us to save them back in 1967, when they were assaulted on all sides, by 5 NATIONS?

When Israel bombed Iraq’s nuclear program, the ENTIRE UNITED STATES SENATE VOTED TO CONDEMN THEIR ACTION. (Except for Ron Paul, who contended that it was NOT OUR BUSINESS TO TELL ISRAEL THEY COULDN’T DEFEND THEMSELVES.)

So Ron Paul stands up and says, “why are we putting our arm into a bees nest, when there is no clear threat to the the homeland?”, and many of you say that he’s “RADICAL.”

Here are a few questions for you to ponder:

Why is our military being used to defend the opium market in Afghanistan?

Why is it that we help to install brutal dictators to the nations of the middle east, and why is it that we wonder why their people are rebelling, and blame us?

It’s been what, over a decade of us being told that Iran will have a nuke that can strike the US mainland, right?

Nobody is saying that Iran should just have a free pass. Ron Paul just wants to make sure that we don’t entangle ourselves in yet ANOTHER war, that has truly nothing to do with us.

I’ve seen Santorum in interviews, and he’s a very likable guy when given the opportunity to show his personality. He gets frustrated during debates, because he’s given little time and is often cut off by moderators. Besides, I’m getting sick and tired of seeing our troops returning home dead inside a coffin or alive with their bodies deformed and/or limbs missing and innocent civilians slaughtered. No, it’s time for YOU NEO-CONSERVATIVES to deal with the reality that endless warfare will only make other countries exercise perpetual hatred towards the U.S. and submerge us deeper in red ink until we’re all out of money. It’s time to bring our troops home from the Middle East and let them have their sovereignty back. If we just let the countries maintain their soverignty, they’ll be more friendly. Should any country attack the U.S. directly, the President can seek Congress for approval and once war has been declared, our military can wreak havoc on that country, and then immediately return straight home.

“Or, do you believe that as Ron Paul stated in the last debate, that their actions are our fault?”

I think Ron Paul was saying that it was the U.S. government‘s invasive actions that provoked the Middle East’s negative reaction, so, it seems that you’ve taken his statement out of context.

@Mr. Oshawott…Our Founding Fathers never anticipated the Middle East becoming such a danger to America, because they had no idea how technology would be so influential across the oceans. These Islamic countries believe in the return of a caliphate and the Western (USA) way of life will be eradicated from the earth. Dr. Paul tends to ignore history and wear blinders with regard to this caliphate crusade.

Had America been isolationists, we might not be in this mess. But there‘s too much water under the bridge to turn back and pretend the water’s not there now.

Yep, you’re right … the media is once again trying to select our president for us. Even FoxNews is becoming more lame stream and less dependable.

I feel like Bachmann and Santorum are the exact same candidate. They should play rock, paper, scissor to see who drops out….. best of 7 of course. That way true conservatives would have one candidate to vote for.

Santorum has so much more experience and so much more success in getting his legislation through. Bachmann is awesome in many respects–you can’t hold her views. But the best thing that you can say about her is that she holds an opinion.

Correction: “you can’t hold anything against her views” –a compliment to Bachmann.
