Is Sesame Street Spreading Left-Wing Propaganda? Exec Admits, Yes

Is Sesame Street Spreading Left Wing Propaganda? Exec Admits, YesWhile the theme song to the kids show Sesame Street encourages people to ask how to get there, one author just finished an expose exploring what’s really in the popular show: left-wing propaganda.

Sesame Street, with its loveable and fuzzy characters, is really a mouthpiece for the left’s agenda. That’s the conclusion of author Ben Shapiro, who after interviewing hundreds of industry insiders found that many of Hollywood’s most popular shows, including the popular kids program, are inundated with secret political messages. And he got top executives to admit it.

Shapiro’s new book, “Primetime Propaganda: The True Hollywood Story of How the Left Took Over Your TV,” according to it’s description “is the story—told in their own words—of how television has been used over the past sixty years by Hollywood writers, producers, actors, and executives to promote their liberal ideals, to push the envelope on social and political issues, and to shape America in their own leftist image.”

For example, Shapiro quotes Mike Dann, one of Sesame Street’s founding executives, saying it “was not made for the sophisticated or the middle class.” Using the premise, the team worked in all sorts of messages, including Grover breaking bread with a hippie and Oscar the grouch who was supposed to address “conflicts arising from racial and ethnic diversity.” Dann also admitted he used the program in the wake of 9/11 to highlight peaceful alternatives to war.

“Sesame Street tried to tackle divorce, tackled ‘peaceful conflict resolution’ in the aftermath of 9/11 and had [gay actor] Neil Patrick Harris on the show playing the subtly-named ‘fairy shoeperson’,” writes Shapiro, according to THR.

The news may not be surprising considering the left‘s recent use of the show’s cuddly character, Elmo. The furry, red puppet has been Is Sesame Street Spreading Left Wing Propaganda? Exec Admits, Yesused to trumpet free internet, lament job loss, and even plug Michelle Obama’s child nutrition bill.

But the left-wing messages aren‘t limited to children’s programs. Adults are inundated, too. The Independent explains:

The TV series Friends undermined family values; Sesame Street taught ethnic minorities about civil disobedience; Happy Days had a subtle anti-Vietnam subtext; and the 1980s cop show MacGyver tried to persuade pistol-packing Americans that guns are bad.

Happy Days? Friends? Believe it. Shapiro even got Friends co-creator Marta Kauffman to own up to intentionally hiring liberals and sending a strong message to conservatives in a popular episode:

Among Shapiro’s most revelatory interviewees is Marta Kauffman, the co-creator of Friends, who recalls how she hired a “bunch of liberals” to run the programme to “put out there what we believe”. In 1999, she admitted casting the actress sister of Newt Gingrich, the prominent Republican, to play a preacher at a lesbian wedding because she wanted to annoy conservatives.

“When we did the lesbian wedding, we knew there was going to be some flack,” said Kauffman. “I have to say, when we cast Candice Gingrich as the minister of that wedding, there was a bit of a ‘fu** you’ in it to the right-wing, directly.”

So how did Shapiro get these executives to say such things on record. According to him, he took advantage of liberal stereotypes.

“There was a certain amount of stereotyping on their part in granting the interview,” he told the Independent. “Many probably assumed that with a name like Shapiro and a Harvard Law credential, there was no need to Google me: I would have to be a leftist. In Hollywood, talking to a Jew with a Harvard Law baseball cap is like talking to someone wearing an Obama pin.”

“I was shocked by the openness of the Hollywood crowd when it came to admitting anti-conservative discrimination inside the industry,” he told the paper. “They weren’t ashamed of it. In fact, some were actually proud of it.”

yeah, it would really be tragic if your kids (hope they will at least learn to spell and speak the english language better than you) learn about non-violent conflict resolution and tolerance. These are just such evil messages to be indoctrinating our kids with. Especially when delivered by a cuddly puppet. And Dora!!! My god, she is hispanic! Probably an illegal so my kids won’t ever watch that filth. God you all are such a bunch of paranoid, closet racist, morons. I have never seen such perversion of the english language than on this message board-did you guys miss the episode sponsored by the letter ‘S’? And you wonder why the rest of the country thinks Glenn Beck listeners are stupid-spell check people!

I would hardly call the quotes ‘boasting’. See, Glenn has a very clever way of scaring his audiences with scary headlines, if you bother to read into it yourself, you find it is not nearly so menacing. And yes I did go to college, paid my loans and because I am sure I earn more money than you, I probably pay even MORE taxes than you do. And by the way (sorry I am an adult so I don’t use lol, btw, etc) typing in all caps is usually something you outgrow after middle school, maybe you need an anger management class? Take a deep breath, put down the $10k food cellar stocking kit, and try to relax-this is Sesame St. And you spelled moron wrong, moron. It is really hilarious that Glenn can get his mindless sheep to get so upset about something as harmless as Sesame St. It is not hilarious that you all will probably short change your kids on an education because of how afraid and ignorant you are.

Just for the record, I am a conservative and a fan of Beck from years ago. I am also disturbed by a lot of what I am seeing today, and I don’t mean a pending Muslim Caliphate. When the attention gets shifted to shutting down Sesame St and PBS because of a Leftist agenda, I can not go along with it. Just a plea to stay focused, that’s all. And by the way, I am also not a child, I am a grown man and will not be left to perish on the windy mountain, or whatever the direct translation is.

Color me old fashioned, but I learned to communicate with the world through the proactive efforts of my mother and think that type of interaction is the one that ought be the primary influence in the education of children. Who are you to deride those who profess to hold themselves to the same standard? If you hold, as you do in suggesting that to deny Sesame Street is injurious to education, that kids are better taught to read or learn of their world by passively absorbing content from the boob tube, along with whatever core leftist-friendly agenda producers of the show decide to *admittedly* sneak into their benignly leftist pablum of a lesson plan, you’re no friend to conservative thought.

Count me a skeptic, as well, to your pronouncements of being a Glenn Beck fan even as you lampoon and castigate his audience and conspiratorially decry -his- ‘attack’ on Sesame Street – when Beck hasn’t to date even had a hand in this story. Read the byline, genius. It’s a report on a news aggregation site Beck owns regarding the content of a -totally- different person’s book. It‘s not Glenn Beck’s book, nor is the site his personal blog. His ‘clever hand’ is guiding mindless sheep cultivated to be scared and paranoid? Or, rather, has your paranoid and pathological hatred of ‘Svengali Beck’ been revealed?

You clearly don’t get it. Not only did we prevent our children from watching tripe like Sesame Street, we prevented them from being infected by the public schools. We home schooled all (6) of our kids and today we have 6 hard working, tax paying, financially solvent Americans with above average pay who VOTE. 4 of the 6 are self-employed and are actually creating jobs. I am proud that my children have created more jobs than Barry O’blahblah. He continues to spew his leftist BS and gets nothing done. Liberalism is a fraud, period. However, I did experience the idyllic type of childhood kickagrandma describes. If Appalachia is still like this, I would suggest that our youth spend a summer there to see the good ole days. And, if Appalachia is 3rd world like you suggest, then the city youth (upper crust, non 3rd world, elitist, etc….) could help to enlighten them ( oh dear God no ). Actually, I think the city kids would learn quite a bit from the Appalachian children, and come back much happier and well adjusted. Do you really think that the children today are better off than the kids that kickagrandma describes from a time gone by?

More bigoted hyperbole. Now that you are outed, let’s provide you the opportunity to provide those facts you talk about. You said, “The fact that Glenn Beck is so out of touch and morally bankrupt”. And, now the facts please.

What you, and folks like you always fail to recognize is that it is NOT Glenn attacking anyone. It IS Glenn providing quotes, via there printed or spoken word, saying what THEY said and believe.

It would be like someone getting upset if you said that I attacked you and said you used bigoted hyperbole. No need to get upset. I said it, it is fact, and I stand behind it.

Just like Marta Kauffman, the co-creator of Friends, said “she hired a “bunch of liberals” to run the programme to “put out there what we believe””. She said it, it is fact, and I bet she would stand behind it.

No attack from Glenn, at all.

Say what you mean, and mean what you say. And, then when someone quotes it, or plays it back, don’t blame them for letting you take a look at yourself in the mirror.

Sesame Street started the same year I was born. I grew up on it and Electric Company. Jim Henson did extensive research to find out at what levels of cadence & repetition children learned best to count, recite the alphabet, etc. He incorporated all of that into making Sesame Street as fun & educational as possible. I could read at 4 & I’m sure Sesame Street played a part. Plus a sweet childlike wonder & innocence was infused throughout. (Electric Company definitely snarkier!)

BUT, after Jim Henson suddenly died (my little brother was 2 or 3 at the time) the show took a nosedive in the early 80′s. First clue — the “Sunny Day” theme song was turned from a sweet children’s song into a funked-out travesty, and the opening credits that showed with it portrayed an empty playground (too many drug dealers?), and all the kids playing in the alley. Second clue, crappy characters added like hyperactive Elmo.

By the 90′s when I had little kids, SS had truly tanked. The day I decided to ban my own children from watching Sesame Street, the episode ran something like this: Rap theme song, empty playground. Alphabet run through with so many interruptions it was impossible to follow. Sirens(!) and crying babies as nearly continual background noise on the show. Elmo and Zoe shrieking about their feelings. The last straw: “above & below” skit was a Muppet guy being TRAMPLED by a Muppet elephant. How peaceful, PBS!

      Bye-bye Sesame Street.

Warner Brothers cartoons were just fine for kids, or on Saturdays they had Roy Rogers or Sky King. Even the commercials were better for kids. Boys had the Matel Guns like the Fanner 50, or they had the Mighty NO battleship or even a Red Ryder BB gun or a wood burning or slot car set. Little girls had dolls & the easy bake oven, as it should be. That was real America.

Happy Days as a show wasn’t thematically anti-Vietnam war, but like most contemporary entertainment shows of the era such a message was evident. Being against the war was -the- backdrop assumption within Hollywood then and it shouldn‘t surprise that such attitudes would find their way in venues you wouldn’t normally expect it.

      @Jumbles
Re M.A.S.H being set as an allegory of the Vietnam War

Decidedly so. As per the director of the movie on which the show was based. Both iterations of M.A.S.H. were thematically set in opposition to the Vietnam war. How you, or anyone, could have missed this is astounding, since the message was practically brought home with a sledgehammer.

Today’s threat is brought to you by the letter P, for paranoid.

Sesame Street has secret coded message for indoctrinating young children? Tell that to the mental health professional and ask for a diagnoses.

The message of Sesame Street isn’t secret, it’s right there on the surface: take pride in who you are, accept others as they are, love your neighbor, resolve conflicts peacefully, stay in school and whatever else. Yep, that’s a liberal message, but there’s no effort to hide it. That‘s what the show is about and that’s why the show has remained popular for the last fourty years – parents watch it with their kids and like the program content.

BTW, Sesame Street has earned 18 Emmy Awards, more than any other TV shows.

LMAO!!! Nice try. It‘s funny how you automatically assume that since I mentioned Fox that that’s the only news outlet they are exposed to. There are more ways for one to get the news these days, in case you haven’t noticed. But I guess in your little mind, that dastardly Fox WOULD be the only news source, bless your heart.

I teach them to question the source. They are also very well read and have a more rounded POV than most of their peers. They are also not allowed to watch network TV or anything government funded for the reasons stated in the article. You know, the one that had the words of the libs responsible for all of that drivel. Then, Sesame Street is “pushing ‘alternatives’ to war”? I don’t think so. It’s only pushing its own, one-sided ideas, not alternatives (such as what, anyway, surrender?) Thing is, it shouldn’t be “pushing” anything in particular.

Why not do a real expose on lets say “The Comedy Channel”, “Bravo” (The gay channel)(hey, i’m not knockin,, they do have some good mainstream shows), and least,,, but most importantly,,, he who writes history…. “History Channel” (this would be the greatest story of them all). I would like to know about the history of the “History Channel” and how it became soooo,,, liberal, dare I say?

Ok, I admit, it was a good peice, but, I think a little deeper digging needs to be done to expose the real conspiracy going on. It’s bigger than we think! … Well, I think anyway..

      For what it’s worth.

Nothing new. Has anyone watched Playhouse Disney with their children lately? How about Hand Manny? You know the liberal agenda is playing out.

Wow, I had no idea. Oh yea, that’s right. This is why my daughter watches veggie tales or just elmo’s world, since that is just about the “science” of things and not theories on life.

I challenge you to watch Cartoon Network on any given Sunday night, when they air what seems to be SOLELY anti-Christian shows, one after another, mocking religion, and more specifically, Christianity. I’m thinking of not even allowing the kids to watch CN during the day.

Running out of options, though as Disney/ABC gets further and further in bed with the left, while they charade as wholesome (presumably conservative).

@TomFerrari: I hate Cartoon Network, but I found something I love on there! Looney Tunes, the ole ones. I used to watch The Bug Bunny and Tweety Show on Saturday morning cartoons, and they don’t play anything good like that anymore on Saturday mornings, but they do play the old Merrie Melodies cartoons on Cartoon Network during the day. I won’t let my kids watch anything else on CN, but I do DVR Looney Tunes, and I’m hoping I can put them on a DVD later and edit out all the commercials for non-stop Merrie Melodies!

It makes fearing what your children are exposed to in college look bland, hey?!?! My mom hated Sesame Street when I was younger. She felt there was passive aggressive undertones with the puppets and it was never on in our home. My oldest is 30 and my youngest is 7 and all my children are smart and survived without Big Bird and Mr. Hooper.
