Is Sharia Law Being Imposed in a Canadian Middle School? Ask the Menstruating Young Girls

In America, the debate over prayer and its place in public schools never seems to simmer. But, we’re not alone. The heated discussion over faith in public education is occurring in Toronto, Canada, as well. In addition to general frustration over prayer, advocates and critics are outraged by the fact that young Islamic girls are separated from others during meetings due to menstruation – a provision that indicates Sharia law is potentially being imposed in the public school.
These critics claim that the Ontario middle school is breaching Ontario’s Education Act — a law that provides guidelines for religion’s place in the public school system.
To provide more in-depth details, the Toronto District School Board has been under fire for allowing an imam to hold Friday prayer services for Muslim students. These weekly religious meetings occur in Valley Park Middle School’s (again, a public educational facility) cafeteria. Between 300 and 400 of the school’s 1,200 students take part in the weekly meeting.
While critics remain outraged, the district argues that freedom of religion trumps the Education Act and states that the district has an “obligation to accommodate faith needs.” Since Muslims must pray at a certain time during the day on Fridays, the district believes it is simply providing an avenue to ensure that young people can maintain their religious beliefs and practices. In the past, students would leave the school to worship at outside mosques. This created a variety of attendance issues for the district.
To be clear on the matter, the Education Act reads as follows:
Subject to subsections (2) and (3), a board shall not permit any person to conduct religious exercises or to provide instruction that includes indoctrination in a particular religion or religious belief in a school.
Sections (2) and (3) highlight some exceptions to this rule. Among them, the board may permit a person to conduct religious instruction “that includes indoctrination” if it is not conducted by or under the authority of the board, and if the activities are conducted “before or after the school’s instructional program” (or on a non-school day). Critics maintain that these exemptions have not been met and that the Friday activities are, thus, breaching the law.
Some, including at least one imam, have made suggestions to address the controversy. Since having an outside religious leader come into the school appears to be problematic, students could be trained to deliver their own sermons (though religious teaching would require that only boys do so). But, for now, this suggestion has not yet been implemented and controversy remains. The Toronto Star has more:
Valley Park’s prayer services, which until recently operated without complaint, have raised a debate about the place of religion in an increasingly diverse public system. One Hindu group plans protests, and the progressive Muslim Canadian Congress is contemplating legal action to force the board to comply with the Education Act.

But, it’s not just the existence of the prayer services that have people in an uproar. Surprisingly, the meeting is conducted in Arabic and the school does not monitor what is said. Additionally, boys and girls enter separately, with the girls wearing scarves and shawls to cover their heads and arms.

The most contentious issue, though, is the fact that girls who are menstruating are forced to sit at the back of the pack; they are permitted to listen but cannot take part (see the picture to the left). The New American has more about why this separation takes place:
“Unclean” is the word Muslims use for girls who are menstruating. Sharia law states they must be separated from the “clean” students.

Meanwhile over 150 Canadian soldiers died in Afghanistan to (ostensibly) fight for the rights and dignity of young Muslim women like these.
Mark Steyn also covers about the situation and the image, writing:
Not some exotic photojournalism essay from an upcountry village in Krappistan. But a typical Friday at a middle school in the largest city in Canada. I forget which brand of tampon used to advertise itself with the pitch “Now with new [whatever] you can go horse-riding, water-ski-ing, ballet dancing, whatever you want to do”, but perhaps they can just add the tag: “But not participate in Friday prayers at an Ontario public school.
With the debate heating up over the past month, there’s no telling where this situation will lead. Some commentators claim that this is an opportunity for other groups to request special accommodations as well, while others believe religious activities have no place in public schools during daily instructional periods. Either way, the language barrier and the segregation of young girls are both problems the district will likely need to contend with.

If Christians and Jews can’t do the same thing, it is not in line with freedom of religion. Furthermore, shouldn’t equality laws take precedence over this? You can’t stop them from treating girls and women like property at their home probably, but you CAN and SHOULD when it is on the campus. Creeping Shariah law is a danger…why is it they are permitted to bypass a nation’s laws in favor of their own? Has to stop.

Looking at the picture of the separated girls brings a dangerous “Flashback”. I am old enough, that, as a child in a small OH country school, girls who were menstruating were to sit in the bleachers and not take part during PE. In order to help the girls keep their calendar, our PE teacher had a Giant calendar taped on the inside of the locker room door, and each girls expected “monthly” was written on it each month, and crossed off as she reached it. Some busy body girls copied it or made up their own. This led to girls who were not yet regular, having to deal with rumors of pregnancy constantly. IN THE CASE OF MUSLIM GIRLS AND PRACTICING SHARIA, SUCH SPECULATION COULD BE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH!!!

My Dad was a democrat too but if he were alive today, he sure as heck wouldn’t be voting for them now. There are very few “normal” dems these days as the progressives have pretty much destroyed the dem party and are working on the repub’s as well as proven by the number of “moderate” repub’s there seems to be. I’m with Daryn – we have to step up and vote for true conseratives and we have to call and email and perservere by constantly calling our representatives. I was called a Muslim hater in my social studies back in 10th grade simply because I am a Christian. This school would probably never do such a thing for a Christian, but of course for the Muslim. If they want to force themselves into our schools then EVERY TIME AND AT EVERY PLACE they are allowed to do it there should be Christian and Jewish groups demanding that they be allowed to have prayer time AT THE SAME TIME WITH STUDENTS OF THEIR FAITHS. NO EXCEPTIONS. NO SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS FOR MUSLIMS! We can not just sit back and let them force this lie of a religion upon us. We have to be there at the same time to counter them. Christians and Jews, if you know of an upcoming event the demand from the school the same admittance into the school to let Christian and Jewish students pray. If you don’t know in advance but find out about it while it is going on they get a group from you churches and synagogues that are ready at a moments notice to get in their cars and go down to the school and demand the same privileges that they are giving the muslims.
Or at the very least, show up in groups and protest when the muslims are allow to do this. If prayer isn’t allow in school it shouldn’t be limited to Christian and Jewish prayers.

Therefore, only a few go out and fight, making change slow and exhausting. If you can survive the wait, someone might hear you. The system is not designed to work. For example, the judges are under a set of rules, but without an enforcing agent. They are free to do whatever they want, even tho they are not supposed to. “Implied consent” has permitted the government into every facet of our existence… a brochure from them this week on the subject of water INSTRUCTS us to have “shorter showers.“ Harper is supposed to have scoffed at ”global warming” yet I now pay a carbon tax on my hydro bill!!! When did THAT happen??? If you want to change anything here, you have to go through a chain of command better described as a bridge to nowhere. We need to fight sharia law in this country, but I fear we will not. I have never before been an isolationist, but I’ve learned nobody has my back. Families of like mind need to gather together and do life their own way… according to our LAWS. The public system is going to hell, and there’s no stopping it. Canada has lost its plumb, trying to please everyone… and screwing them, instead.

It’s not a widespread policy. And the reason it‘s hard for most of Ontario to muster any outrage over this is because we’re publicly funding an entire Catholic School System as enshrined in our Constitution.
Since that won’t be changed (polls show the numbers aren’t there for a referendum), I say let other groups pray if they have a large enough group to make it worthwhile. Let them have Jewish prayer in Jewish communities, let them have Hindu paryers in Hindu communities, and yes let them have Christian prayers in Christian communities. If the population in the school warrants it, I don‘t care what you’re doing in what is, for all practical purposes, a community group.

Got to mosque before or after school kiddies. 2) If not, does the school allow secular meetings on its grounds? If so, no problem, they can’t discriminate based on religion (Campus crusade would be allowed to meet too.) 3) Is the “period” rule, enforced by the group or the school. If it’s the group, no problem their rules are religious based, they are a religious group and they can make and enforce them. If it’s the school, problem. It’s not a school rule, and unless there’s a significant school interest in enforcing the rule (unlikely), the rule is the imam’s problem.

Again, I refer to my earlier post about how 1950′s PE classes handled this problem, with the teacher keeping a calendar, so the girls who were were to “sit out” PE class. Also “Helpful” teachers pets, volunteered to keep their own calendar to help the “other” girls tell if they were coming on that time.
I thought then from all the rumors, and wise remarks from the boys, that it was a way for teachers to figure out if a girl [was] pregnant or not. For muslim girls, (since Middle School students often are not yet regular) The punishments of Sharia could easily cost some girl her life, just because someone wanted to make that life miserable and started a rumor!!!!
