Camera Lost at Sea for a Year Returns to Owner via…Social Networking!

Most people who lose their camera assume it’s gone for good — probably picked up, trashed or just plain lost. But when you lose it in the ocean, there are a number of reasons why its a total goner and the pictures lost forever.

But for a firefighter from British Columbia who lost his camera at sea, this was not the case. Not only was the Canon EOS 1000D found but its memory card with a slew of family vacation photos was preserved and helped identify the owner along with social networking sleuths, according to Tecca.

Owner Receives Camera Lost at Sea for Over a Year | Identified by Working Memory Card and Help From Social Networking | Markus Thompson

(Photo: Markus Thompson)

Markus Thompson, a self-proclaimed naturalist and aspiring photographer, was scuba diving in Deep Bay in Vancouver when he found the camera. Amazingly, it had been under water for more than a year but about 50 photos were recovered from the DSLR memory card. That’s when Thompson took to the vast social network. Tecca has more:

“Approximately 50 pictures on the card from a family vacation. If you know a fire fighter from British Columbia whose team won the Pacific Regional Firefit competition, has a lovely wife and (now) 2 year old daughter — let me know. I would love to get them their vacation photos,” he posted.

Guess how long it took before Thompson had found a match:

The social network’s hive mind went to work and in less than 24 hours Thompson received a message stating “I know exactly who the camera belongs to!” The owner, a firefighter from British Columbia, was identified through photos on the card that showed him at the Pacific Regional Firefit competition.

As you might expect, even though the memory card was functional, the camera itself, which can cost about $500 new, was a complete goner. As Tecca states, social media is often a medium for spreading news and other major events, but here’s an example of how it works on a “smaller and more personal scale.”

Interesting how jealous all these Nikon users seem to be of a Canon 1000D. Lets throw all those Nikon cameras in the sea for a year and see if they preserve 50 pictures as well as this Canon did. Let me know a year from now if the Nikons still works, I want to know.

the camera didn’t preserve the pictures. The chip did. It’ll work the same for nikons. maybe even for whatever camera you use. Cam overboard!

I miss good ol’ film, even though it would not survive the ocean. When I take a pic, I like to have control over either shutter speed or f-stop. Taking a picture of a bat swing or my son throwing a discus just can’t be anticipated well with current digitals… they’re getting better but color range and saturation… guess I’m a purist.

my digital slr (nikon ftw!) allows full control. shutter speed, aperture, everything. i’ve had no problem shooting sporting events, auto racing, etc.. the color saturation might not be as good as slide film but it’s good enough that the 99% (ha!) can’t tell the difference :)

point and shoots suffer that way. A DSLR like the one in the story have excellent control over those and the only thing a film camera has on them is resolution. Near as I can tell.

A friend of mine , while fishing from shore in South Boston, Ma., caught a set of false teeth. This was back in the late fifties. We thought nothing of it, someone must have heaved overboard. We did not know that Whitey Bulger was burying bodies on a beach less than a mile from where he caught them. He also cough a wallet and a dead cat in other locations. Quite the trophy fisherman..

See my above post; I rest my case…

Intellectual superiority or not, it shows how bad our education system has become when full grown adults do not know the difference between your and you’re, to and too, their, there, they’re etc…Then they have the nerve to call others moron, stupid, idiot, loser etc…

Like it or not you are judged by what you write. This includes the average American people posting in here, never mind the supposed, so-called “expert” journalists who write for this site. If you get paid to write then you should at least have a basic grasp of grammar. Try proofing your work before you post.

Since we’re correcting terminology, I’ll jump in too. It was a SD (Secure Digital) memory card, not a DSLR memory card. DSLR refers to the type of camera it is, not memory card. That’s like going to the gas station and saying that you need Ford gas, instead of unleaded or diesel. Wow, that was a horrible example… Is this what it feels like to be patronizing? hmmm….

@ ITJMILLER: You stated, “It was a SD (Secure Digital) memory card, not a DSLR memory card.”

@Hyena: You stated: “I apologize…….this is the first time ever to point out incorrect terminology.”

I believe that you should have stated: “I apologize…….this is the first time “I” ever “had” to point out incorrect terminology.”
OR: “I apologize…….this is the first time ever “I” pointed out incorrect terminology.”

The way you stated it, you are apologizing for this being the very first time there has ever been incorrect terminology. Or, this is the first time YOU have EVER pointed out incorrect terminology.

Now I’m really getting confused! And yes, I do have too much time on my hands.
