MSNBC: Is the AP Racist for ‘Dropping the Gs’ in Transcribing Obama’s Speech?

The Associated Press (AP) covered President Obama’s speech to the Congressional Black Caucus on Saturday night, printing a transcript of what the president said. However, an MSNBC analyst now claims that the manner in which the AP covered the speech was racist.

The AP did not print the words as written for the president, instead choosing to transcribe the speech with what might be considered a bit more accuracy. For example, the teleprompter read, “Stop complaining.“ But the president said ”Stop complainin’.” And that is how the AP reported it.

The issue was discussed on the new Chris Hayes program on MSNBC this morning.  Standing on opposite sides of the topic were Karen Hunter, Journalism Professor/MSNBC Analyst, and John McWhorter, Contributing Editor at New Republic/Columbia University lecturer.

UPDATE: We were not the only outlet questioning the opinion of MSNBC’s analyst Karen Hunter on this subject. Earlier this afternoon, Mediaite’s Tommy Christopher also posted the video from the Chris Hayes show and printed a response from Mark Smith, the AP writer responsible for transcribing Obama’s speech. Smith’s explanation of the now-famous “dropped Gs”;

Normally, I lean toward the clean-it-up school of quote transcribing – for everyone. But in this case, the President appeared to be making such a point of dropping Gs, and doing so in a rhythmic fashion, that for me to insert them would run clearly counter to his meaning. I believe I was respecting his intent in this. Certainly disrespect was the last thing I intended.

      When one is introuble, especially the liberals, and when they, whoever or whatever color or nationality thet may be, in a related setting, the common occurance is to take on the appearance of that group and togetherness.

      If AP was reporting on what was said and in the manner it was said, I see no problem. The word racism has been totally taken out of context as the same with many other words.

      Does anyone remember the president who said ‘it depends on that the word is – is?‘ He’s the one that started this word perversion.

      Um….Okay, somebody help me out here, How is it racist if they’re printing EXACTLY what he IN FACT said? I mean….he dropped the G intentionally. He did it enough times that we all know for a fact it was intentional. AP’s just reporting it exactly how it was, and reporting things EXACTLY how they are is what journalism should be…..right?

      I bet the only people who read the AP account and found it racist were the race baiters that work for CommieCast over at MSNBC.       I think that whole conversation with those panelists was a waste of time, including the guy who claims it is not “improper English, but Black English, and cool.” Equally as stupid was the lady throwing a fit about it. Everyone knows Obama breaks into black dialect ALONG with making his microphone echo as if he is a god among blacks. If they choose to keep buying his b.s. on race alone, without bothering to look at the facts and the state of this economy, it is their downfall. Obama knows he only has to do a LITTLE and that those who would choose him again based on race reasons ONLY will do two very important things for him: Vote for him again. Second, direct their anger at him not doing what they want at anyone else BUT him. It’s a win-win for Obama, he gets their vote AGAIN, and stirs up racial tensions again. How convenient.

      When the woman stated that the bamster is the most intelligent president since Carter, she lost all her credibility. Where is the proof of this man’s intelligence? Are any of his college transcripts published? He admits in his first book that he considered himself a failure as a lawyer. He has not personally authored anything since college, most notably no bills in the Senate. He has accomplished nothing but read a teleprompter, campaign and win three elections. He would not have won his last election without riding on the shoulders of ACORN, SEIU, the crass media and the largest turnout of black voters in American history. Does any of that establish a level of awe inspiring intelligence? Take him off prompter and watch him stammer, gaff, crash and burn. BO may very well be the dumbest president in our lifetime, but some of these talking heads are too enamored with who they think his to see who he really is.

      Obama is no more native Hawaiian than my white son, born at Pearl Harbor. Native Hawaiian is like being Native American, it is an ethnic thing. He is part white and part African Muslim. (Yes I know Muslim is not an ethnic distinction.) He was born in Hawaii, that doesn’t make him Hawaiian.

      Other than that, I can see your other points. I imagine he faced a lot of racism in Hawaii. I lived there for 3 years, and there were Native Hawaiians that didn’t like any American, because they wanted to be a separate nation. Whites are the minority, and though I didn’t feel prejudiced against while I was there, my aunt, who house-sat for a while for a friend, did. I thought the atmosphere was one of integrated diversity, but I had mostly contact with other military families.

      My wife’s boss is a fine black man who does a great job. I noticed at company get-togethers when he talks to whites or is in mixed race company he speaks more like a white would. However, when he is with blacks only, his blackness comes out and he talks with the drawl/slur that most blacks use, shuckin‘ and jivin’ with his bro’s using black colloquial terms. Perhaps this is what Obama does. On another note; why is a half white, half black person called black only in America? In other parts of the world, including two African countries I have lived in, Ethiopia and Nigeria, they are called by a different name than white or black.

    Actually, the President himself is the racist – he has driven young black male unemployment to almost 50% in 2 short years. His policies lured minorities into paying on their soon-to-be foreclosed homes for many many months longer than they should have, costing them billions. His buddy Barney Frank set the whole housing crisis up on the banking committee. Hell, the white devil could not have fleeced blacks any better if they had the Klan itself in the “whitehouse”.

      You are right on! But if you look at, I mean really look at who has Done something for the African-Americans, it has come from the GOP. Read your history. It started with Lincoln. (GOP) Who opposed civil rights legislation-Dems, GOP passed it. And look at what happened in Chicago healthcare. The innercity blacks ended up having to travel miles to get hospital healthcare, when there was a hospital right there. Check it out! Look at what group has been hit the hardest by our economy, check it out. Who is the best for African-Americans politically? If they would get the facts, they would not vote for him again.

    For a man with zero southern roots, zero ghetto housing experience and apparently no personal American history, POTUS is smart enough to add an occasional ‘yall or drop an ending “g” or two to demonstarate his momentary solidarity for a particular cause or audiance, strickly to gain political points. I once heard him say, to a predominently black audience (non elitists) that “today’s drug laws are not right, Too many folks in prison for minor rock cocaine serving the same time as the powder cocaine folks, and that’s not right.” That’s what a community organizer knows.       That is exactly how Obama reads the teleprompter, in that sing song, rhythmatic cadence which is soothing and lulls you into kind of a semi-hypnotic state, where your mind relaxes and drift’s away on a little vacation from reality.
      Consequently, you haven’t even really been listening to the words being spoken, you’ve just enjoyed the brief trip, have no idea of what subject matter was, all you know (or regretfully think) is, “Wow, what a great speech”.
      You’ve been hoodwinked, a new rule or regulation is in place and you enjoyed the hell out of being taken advantage of.

      Leaving aside the content, that is how Sarah Palin talks. Obama drops a “g” now and then, but at least he speaks in complete sentences, without hanging clauses, that actually go somewhere and mean something.

    This is really sick, and I for one am tired of this crutch used called racism. Due to the fact Obama and his band of cockroaches have no real plan and only want to spend and continue to lie on his never ending campaign trail it seems racism is always their ace in the hole. I can’t wait until we can boot this devil out of the White House for good. I can only imagine the stench Obama will have left behind. Talk about someone being worthy of being flushed down a toilet.

      You’ve got to love how obama changes the inflection of his voice when addressing a black audience ,pandering ? You got that right. If you listen to the speech or some of it you’ll see just how far he is willing to go. Talking about wanting equality ( he is President of the Untied States for Christ sake ) Blacks are in high positions in every sector of society. He goes on to basically call for violence in my opinion ,The POTUS calling for violence from one race against another . Disgusting .

    I do not care what he says, or how he says it, all I see is a person wo is trying to destroy our country, and I believe to my soul he is doing so deliberatly. He would never be honest and come right out and say he wants to throw out the constitution and replace it with socialism, but actions, I repeat, actions speak louder than words. It will take a lot for the next president to undo the damage that this one is done. If this dishonest(including how he dumbs down language for his audience) person is re-elected, I only pray the country can still stand. Please God, let America wake up , before it’s too late.

      Hey IPOCKPA, the guys a big hypocrite, he becomes what he thinks the grouphe is addressing wants. He was addressing the CBC and he wants them to helpp him start the riots. As soon as he is convinced he is going to lose or when he does lose he needs the brothers to riot and loot and burn.
      Several of the CBC members are going to agitate their constituancies so that he can declare martial law ans suspend the election or its results. They plan on being part of the royal court when Obumbler declares him self King.

    Obama has never sounded presidential with his dropped g’s, his penchant for talking down to his audiences, and his constant rabble rousing, community organizer style.
    Why should anyone in the press try to cover that up?
    All to often, the MSM neglects to portray him for what he is…now that the AP has actually captured some of his essence, then they MUST be racist, as are any who disagree with the Big Zero.
