The UC Berkeley College Republicans are planning a bake sale — where the price of a cupcake depend on your race.

The “Increase Diversity Bake Sale” is meant to satirize an affirmative action-like bill in California that would let the university system consider ethnicity in student admissions.

“Just like the CA Senate Bills 185 and 387 the phone bank supports, we will be considering race, gender, ethnicity, national/geographic origin and other relevant factors to ensure the equitable distribution of baked goods to our diverse student body,” the College Republicans wrote in a Facebook announcement publicizing the event, set for Tuesday. “Hope to see you all there! If you don’t come, you’re a racist!”

But with a price structure that includes $2 for “White/Caucasian,” $1.50 for “Asian/Asian American” and $.0.75 for “Black/African American,” some aren’t finding it very funny.

“I’m ashamed to know that I go to the same school with people who would say stuff like this,” student Skyler Hogan-Van Sickle wrote Facebook. “I’m really trying to figure out how someone can be this hateful.”

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, more than 200 students responded to the event, mostly in opposition. One threatened to burn the table and set the cupcakes on fire. At least four student groups sent complaints to campus administrators, and a student-only meeting was set for Friday evening to discuss it.

“It’s offensive because of the tactics that they chose,” Joey Freeman, Berkeley’s student government vice president told the Chronicle. “This should be done for constructive dialogue and debate. But not in a way I thought was, frankly, racist.”

In a separate Facebook post, the College Republicans doubled down on their intent to hold the bake sale:

The Berkeley College Republicans firmly believe measuring any admit’s merit based on race is intrinsically racist. Our bake sale will be at the same time and location of a phone bank which will be making calls to urge Gov. Brown to sign the bill. The purpose of the event is to offer another view to this policy of considering race in university admissions. The pricing structure of the baked goods is meant to be satirical, while urging students to think more critically about the implications of this policy.

Gibor Basri, Berkeley’s vice chancellor for equity and inclusion, told the Chronicle the Facebook posting does not violate any campus policy.

“The only policy it violates is the principles of community,” he said, adding that a campus-wide letter will go out Monday. “We can use this as a teaching moment.”

Shawn Lewis, president of the Berkeley College Republicans, said he was surprised by the number of critics and their harshness his organization has received. He said agrees that race-based pricing is discriminatory.

“But it’s discriminatory in the same way that considering race in university admissions is discriminatory,” he said.

      This might make more of a statement if the ingredients for the baked good were stolen from Native Americans, blacks were forced to make the baked goods and then weren’t allowed to purchase them for 80 years. That would probably make certain people think twice about supporting it though. Ah well!

      I think it is a clever way to demonstrate their point of view but of course Is it really wise? I’m sure it comes as no surprise that the majority of these kids are incensed! Liberalism is a type of mental illness and it keeps them from understanding such illustrations. Many have tried to use redistribution of grades to those in college with lesser scores and hiring sports players with race in mind to better represent the diversity of our nation and give those who are disadvantaged a chance to play and earn with the other professionals. They never see the point. Just label you a racist and ignore you.

      This is an absurd idea and should be dealt with in a fitting manor. Everyone knows that the AA cupcakes should have been handed out and delivered without delay or cost to the proper recipient. Only way to be absolutely fair and PC. A true reflection of the system. I do apologize to the hard working–hard studying black individuals that my be offended by this. It’s meant for the few (both white and black) that make your race such a easy target for such actions.

Considering the unions control all major services: Police, Firefighter, Hospitals, Schools, City Works, DMV ( SEIU)., the Electrical and Gas companies, Grocery stores, and numerous construction projects and skilled trades jobs get ready for real class warfare. It will be union only helping union and if the union finds out your not one of them then your are screwed because they control all of the essential things in life that people need.       I thought they should have reversed the prices. should have charged blacks 2.00 and whites .75. Then they would get to see how we feel. Race shouldn’t even be a question on the application form to get hired anywhere. if they want to do demographics, look AFTER the applicant is hired. Same for college, race shouldn’t be a factor, grades should. But they’re training people early (at 18) that you can be the best BLACK person for the job and still get it even if you’re not as good as some other race.

      OK, how about this:
      They sell all the cupcakes for the same price, but any black people who buy them have to eat theirs out back by the dumpsters. Whites, who buy theirs, are allowed to eat in a special “restricted country club-style” dining area (but please, no jews).

      Or how about one they sell each cupcake, they should make the buyer apply for a napkin. Just to be accurate, they should probably arbitrarily reject at least 50% of applications for a napkin from blacks. Then they can complain about how disgusting blacks are for not using napkins!

      Or maybe these kids should just take their cupcakes and quit school, since they apparently think a cupcake is an adequate equivalent for a college education.

      Nope. The problem is not that they cannot compete on an even field–the point is that the field is fundamentally uneven.       Once I recovered from the shock of finding out that Berkeley has Republican students, I was impressed by their creativity and daring! Not only have I found most of my liberal friends to be intellectually lazy, but in my experience, most college students don’t understand the concept of satire. PP, I wondered recently where you have been lurking all this while! Of COURSE the playing field is inherently uneven – hence “diversity” and the gift of agency. I have seen people overcome enormous odds, but it was their will and tenacity that did the trick, not legislation and not handouts.

      We could solve this by just not having race on any application, college or job. If they want to do statistics, or demographics, do it after the applicant is hired. I would hate to be hired someplace because I was the best WOMAN for the job, and not the best applicant. I know what this feels like, because I went through it with my dad. He got hired originally at Proctor and Gamble as their token handicapped person (having only one eye), but he proved himself as invaluable.

      To say that some race needs help because they’re not smart enough to do it on their own, is the same as saying blacks have different genetics (are inferior) to whites. It’s racist. You want the job? Work for it. And don’t give me any crap about the schools being geared towards whites. Why? because they don’t teach in Ebonics? Rubish.

      This scheme is also very useful as an organizing tactic. Note that the loons come straight out to exploit this in reverse. Rather than acknowledge the obvious they call the victims the racist.     Clever! Too bad the lefties are too indoctrinated to see the naked truth in front of their very eyes. Considering race as an element of admission IS intrinsically racist. It suggests that other races are not able to get in on their own merit. That would p**s me off. It would also anger me to find that I was not accepted because of a racist quota when, perhaps, I was the most qualified. I also believe it’s time to stop calling all other races minorities. It is no longer true in many cases, and I believe it to be an extremely racist way to bring attention to the color of ones skin. I have never been interested in a person’s color, but their ability to engage is like a beacon of light. College is a waste of money and time. It no longer teaches accurate history. Math is anathama to the BIG CAMPUS. I am 50 years old and have seen a great many changes in my lifetime. The worst has been the resurgance of racisim FROM THE LEFT. Liberals are the champions of affirmative action and welfare and every other insulting government action taken to ‘make things equal’. Only the people can do that by opening hearts and minds to all of the wonderful diversity our once great country offers. WE are the answer. All of us. We have so much to learn about each other. I think it’s time to learn it and MEAN IT! All men are created equal, and endowed by their Creator the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Our founders staked everything on those words. We must do the same now.

    Is this racist? Yes — and that is the point. They are drawing attention to the inherent racism of these proposed bills. They don’t truly believe people should pay different prices based on their race, nor should the receive preferential treatment based upon their race. Libs seem to only be able to participate in intelligent debate on a topic if there is no dissenting opinion from their own.

      I think that the whole idea of explaining how a racial based enrollment practice is racist (yes, it all makes sense now…) is completely lost upon Berkley. They’ve got their heads so far up their butts it would take a crowbar to dislodge them.

    KUDOS to these Republican students for bringing out in the open the racist movement against whites in the real world. Never forget what Eric Holder stated when he said “There can be no hate crime against whites, only blacks. These are my people.” Combine that with the Obama administration’s policy of “No Whites Need Apply” for gov;t jobs.. I ask, “WHO HAS BEEN DISCRIMINATED AGAINST FOR OVER 30 YEARS?”

      UNSEENAMERICAN, aw, you DIDN’T like my post? Well maybe I should belly up to the table and say that I LIKE the fact that it is now considered UNETHICAL to promote me at work because I am a straight, white male. Maybe I should say, YES, I THINK ITS GREAT that all of the C-Level leadership at my company attend the regional Women’s this and Asian that and African-American whatever group and the only way I have of landing on their radar screen is, well, by working hard at my job and not getting any time off to go to special “HOORAY FOR ME” meetings. Is that EQUALITY Mr UNSEENAMERICAN? Is that the DREAM for which MLK Jr was fighting? Because I DO think that that is EXACTLY what the minorities and the homosexuals and the upper-middle-class, feminist, white girls (and their fathers) had in mind when this affirmative action biz started. “GET WHITEY” was the mantra. So stop acting superior, Mr UNSEENAMERICAN, because I have every right to call BULLSH!1 when I see it.

      @circledwagons: the question is about “race,” and there is only one. Now cultures, that’s an entirely different question. Devolved, advanced, degenerate, isolated, the culture that can’t argue its way out of a wet paper bag of modus ponens and resorts to name-calling. But skin color doesn’t describe culture all that well, not consistently.

    Maybe they should have used illegal aliens instead of Black/African American. I know the message would have been a bit off track. But aren’t they one of the states that gives in state tuition rates to illegals?? Minorities don‘t mind it when the preferential treatment they’re given can’t be seen. But it sure does raise hackles when it’s out front on display. . .
