Is FEMA Dir. a Beck Fan? He‘s Telling People to ’Prepare’ and be Ready to Help Others

If you listen to Craig Fugate, you might just think he’s getting ready to endorse Food Insurance. Who is Fugate? He is the administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, better known as FEMA. And in a recent interview with the Weather Channel, he was sure to trumpet a Glenn Beck-style message of preparedness.

After the Weather Channel asked what were the main challenges facing the agency, Fugate opined:

People need to be prepared. The biggest challenge in any disaster is the tendency for people to think that somebody else is coming to rescue them when the reality is time and time again we see the closest rescuers are your neighbors. So people who don’t prepare, don’t get ready and aren’t able to help each other, that’s probably our biggest challenge. As we continue to deal with all of the issues we face in government, I think it always comes back to people need to understand they are part of the team and they have a role and we’re going to focus on our job. But we won’t be successful if the public isn’t prepared. [Emphasis added]

Careful, Craig, you could soon be mocked for talking like that. No matter how much sense it makes.

    If we really dive into it, FEMA is 80% designed to help people that *didn’t* prepare ahead of time. The other 20% is to actually help people that prepared, but need short-term assistance.

    So in reality, it’s just like any other gubmint program… mostly taking from some and giving to others who don’t prepare for the trials of life, and now feel entitled to help.

      Homland has stated that anyone with more than 3 days supply of food is a food horder. You neighbors roll their eyes when spoken to about emergency preparedness because they think the government will take from us and give to them.

      yes they have, yet people are still horribly unprepared. and at the same time fema receives billions. Katrina illustrated the graft, cronyism, graft, and outright theft that occurs when the government shows up to help.

I believe the head of FEMA was talking about real disasters. Not made up ones. I guess sales of food insurance has gone down. Tell me how much of the company does GB own??

      BEST_PATRIOT – Agreed.

      STOIC_ONE – FEMA does not receive as much money as it needs. It is one of those agencies that is used as a political volleyball by politicians. If you do a simple search, you will see that FEMA funding was used by both Republicans and Democrats in the battles over establishing a budget. The agency has some severe problems, but part of that is because of how it is used by DHS and Congress.

    Preparation is everything. If your not prepared at this point, you must still believe that our government has our best interest at heart. I live 10 minutes from the San Andreas fault line in the bay area. It’s not “the BIG ONE” that I lose sleep over. It’s that deep down gut feeling that “the times that try men’s souls” are just around the corner.

      @THEEDGE You are so right! FEMA even has a FREE book that you can get by calling 1-800-480-2520 of what to do to get prepared. The book is called ARE YOU READY? In the back of the book there are some great check lists of things to have around the house………just in case.

      You are right ! Preparation is everything…because it is basically all we can do as individuals against an out-of-control system. Glenn has been telling us this for years ! Be self-reliant. We use http://www.StoreNSurvive.com and are also storing water in 55 gal. drums. People… get some peace of mind ! Get prepared. !

    If everybody is aware of the impending doom, Why are they concintrating on selling us food rather then creating and deamanding solution to the upcoming DOOM??? We don’t have a politburo or dictaters unless we approve of them by staying silent. This is the United States of America. Screw Europe and there ignorant weak mindedness. It’s high time we become Americans full time. Get local then you will start re-growing the Freedom and Individualality the Founding Fathers gave to us. We the people have lost the power.       B-Neil – It is human arrogance to presume that we can mitigate against all threats, whether they be man-made, geo-political, geological, or weather related events. We really don’t have as much control over many things that would predicate our need to be prepared.

      Dear IDONTTHINKSO… Your statement made me fall of the chair… Laughing so violently all I could do was get on the ground and recover my breathing. Some FEMA agent told you the TRUTH,,, Not happening in our life time. Every statement that is uttered from a federal employee’s pie hole is a lie or disinformation. the democrats and federal employees as a rule are not Citizen Friendly.     Where I come from it’s a way of life to help people in need whether it is a tornado scene or pulling someone out of a ditch. I keep emergency food, water and defensive measures at home to protect us and our community. And when I’m off to work my old squaw is a mama bear!

      Prepare…plan to take care of yourself first..
      Americans have chosen the path we are on..now we see it through I suppose.. All we can do is have the grace and forethought to prepare seriously. I am so pleased that my family lives where they do, and we are not caught up in a big city back east or south…or..heaven forbid CA…
      will we end up in FEMA camps>,,,I hope not. I think Americans, in general, are still asleep being led around by words.

      AND…learn to be your own “bread keeper”… People just don’t stop and think about what they are doing and what tomorrow will bring because of what they do “today”.

    Remember Katrina: we saw a mass of fat people slogging through waist high water crying “Help Me, help me.” Help your damn self! In a disaster there won’t be any cops or firefighters. There won’t be any power, no food or water in the stores. Nobody is coming to help you. It’s up to you. (and don’t brag about your provisions)

      Actually it was more like…”hep me, yo, hep me man, kracker ass kracker, get over here and hep me dagnabit”. One of my fondest memories was all the chained up pit bulls floating on the various porches of the wards and the high end luxury and Euro trash cars floating too-in public housing. And of course the majority of NO PD being in Houston. Good times.

    FEMA has PSAs telling people that it would be good to have 2 weeks of nonperishable food on hand in case of emergencies, both natural & man made.

    Where are the freaking trolls?

    The benefits of having a couple weeks is to not have to go out to buy when people are panicked or acting like a mob. The benefit is to not go out when there is civil unrest, a risky time to be out.
    It is peace of mind, so you have that checked of the punch list & go concentrate on the here & now.

    No, it makes perfect sense. The People should be prepared for an emergency by stocking up on food and supplies. With the latest signed executive order, the government can then come and take what you have. Remember: “As we continue to deal with all of the issues we face in government, I think it always comes back to people need to understand they are part of the team and they have a role and we’re going to focus on our job. But we won’t be successful if the public isn’t prepared.”

    If they are focused on their job, they aren’t preparing. That’s OUR job.
