Is the Pledge of Allegiance ‘Divisive?’ Some Politicians in Oregon Think So

How could something that includes the words ‘pledge of allegiance to the flag of the UNITED States’ be considered divisive? Believe it or not, the mayor and city council of Eugene, Oregon just voted on this very issue.  (It should also be noted that the city of Eugene, Oregon is a member of ICLEI, part of the UN’s Agenda 21 Program.)

Long before NBC Sports edited the Pledge of Allegiance, the city of Eugene, Oregon was busy debating if their City Council should recite it before each bi-monthly meeting. At the June 7th meeting of the council, a proposal was floated by Councilor Mike Clark, suggesting that every bi-monthly meeting start with a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. The Columbian reports that Mayor Kitty Piercy (a lead sponsor of Code Pink’s latest Anti-War Resolution) and others did not agree with this idea, suggesting that reciting the pledge might be “divisive.”

Judging from the letters-to-the-editor posted in the local paper, residents of Eugene responded to the debate from just about every angle one might imagine. We offer an example from both sides:

Pledge language debate is debasing

As a veteran and an American it shocks me that there is even a debate about reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. It is unpatriotic and debasing that our values have slipped so much that people cannot say and confirm their allegiance to their country. Fine. Don’t say “under God” if that offends you.

And if you are offended by our flag and country, please find someplace else to live. If politicians feel they need to debate it, we need new politicians. Freedom requires sacrifice from everyone.

Eugene City Councilor Mike Clark’s desire to force all people, through their representatives on the council, to swear to the Pledge of Allegiance spurred me to research the pledge itself.

Justice Robert Jackson, in a 1943 U.S. Supreme Court decision, wrote for the majority: “If there is any fixed star in our constitutional constellation, it is that no official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion or force citizens to confess by word or act their faith therein.” With that 6-3 decision, the court said no one can be forced to recite the pledge.

I see God as a concept was invented by men, and I defy Clark to draw a circle and define who belongs inside and who is outside the circle without showing the arrogance of the majority fundamentalist religions and their ignorance of the needs of those who are secular. If the word “God” is meaningless and divisive, then why pledge to it? It will serve only to divide our community more.

If reciting the pledge at City Council meetings becomes an “official” activity, then I ask that my representative on the council, Andrea Ortiz, not stand and salute as a way to keep faith with those of a secular persuasion in her ward.

A compromise proposal was pitched, offering the pledge to be recited four times a year, at meetings that happen closest to national holidays (July 4th, Labor Day, etc.)  That proposal passed last night by a vote of 6-2. One of the dissenting votes came from City Councilor George Brown who reportedly told Mr. Clark that he should “say the pledge at home or with friends.”

When asked to comment on the issue and her statement that reciting the pledge before meetings might be “divisive,” Mayor Piercy told The Blaze:

The Eugene City Council has not historically had the pledge as part of its agenda. At the request of one of our councilors who has served in the Air Force, this council decided to not make the pledge routine but to reserve it for special days of national recognition such as Flag Day, Veterans Day, Memorial Day and the 4th of July.

In any case the entire council believes this country is based on the freedom to speak or to be silent, to pledge or not to pledge.

    Why do atheists need to force their un-beliefs on other people? We believers do not force our beliefs on atheists. At least most of us. We aren’t forcing anyone to say the word “God.” We tell them to just not say it. Whether you beleieve or not, it is not your right to force that un-belief on me. Remember the 1st amendment? It applies both ways.

    To be elected to ANY Public Office ANYWHERE in the United States of America, you should be required to 1., Take a test on the Constitution of The United States of America and pass with at least a 75% score or better and your score should be made public before voting.

      ONEOFMANY- G-d is not part of America. The founders made it very clear that there should be a separation between the two. Also, many of the founders were not christians, so if they did want religion to be part of public life it is unlikely that they would be writing about the same religion that you are. Freedom of religion also means freedom from religion. If the US wants to claim religious freedom then any and all religion must be removed from government and politics.

      You aren’t practicing religion whilst reciting the pledge, you are pledging allegiance to America. No one is forcing you to say the word “God.” Just don’t say it, unless you have a problem pledging your allegiance to this country…………..

      You are wrong, Lib. The founders made sure that we would have freedom OF religion and that government did not interfere with the free exercise thereof. They wisely prevented the State from ever becoming or controlling the church as it had in England . The clear intent was to PROTECT religion from the State not the other way around.

      The constitution does NOT REQUIRE the separation of church and state, it requires that the state not adopt one religion over another, and you have a very misconception that our founders were not religious.
      You really need to read history and the constitution!

      @Southside……….please educate us and FIND ANYWHERE that the Founders or the Constitution states a ‘separation of church and state’. The Founders established a ‘freedom OF religion” meaning the Nation would NOT have a ‘national religion“ such as England had in the ”Church of England” forcing all to have ONE RELIGION…..the same as Islamic terrorists want to force all people to belong to the Muslim religion or die by the sword. “Separation of church and state” is a progressive, evil lie enacted to destroy religion.

If it divides them emotionally and patriotically to say the pledge of allegiance then some of them need to be removed as Anti-American agitators. This is an outrage and an insult to all good Oregonians and Americans alike.

    I don’t see why anybody feels the pledge is necessary. Either a person has allegiance or they don’t, no pledge is going to change that. I, personally, remember feeling very uncomfortable with the pledge in school and still do to this day. What is the point of a forced statement of allegiance? If it is important to you then by all means say it for yourself whenever you want.

      The point of a pledge of allegiance is literally standing for your beliefs. You pledge to show others what you believe in without fear or hesitation.

      A pledge should not be forced, but as an American, you should *want* show your patriotism to our nation because of your pride in all that America has accomplished and what we can do in the future.

      If it’s a voluntary thing then why does it need to be public. Especially at the point in which the pledge has religious affiliation, it creates a correlation between religion and patriotism, that has no business in the public square.

      Well geez-Southsidelib– I guess we ought just eliminate the Pledge of Allegiance, the National Motto, the declaration on our money “In God we trust” , the National Anthem -Star spangled Banner, the US Flag–Shoot lets just eliminate all symbols and that way nobody can feel uncomfortable. But hey thid is America and you got a right to be as knuckleheaded as you wannabe. If the Pledge is not needed then nothing is. Why even your President Barry Soetoro doesn’t like our US Constitution, the Pledge of Allegiance, our Flag, Or anything about America prior to the introduction of the Wellfare State.

      Sometimes we need to say it so we remember what’s important. Actually speaking the words isn’t as important as the refusal to do so. Think of it as the wedding vow you say to your country. If you don’t love your country enough to say so, then why should your country want you to be here? Too many people believe they just woke up here one day, figured it was as good a place as any to hang out for the rest of their lives but don’t see the responsibility that comes with that. Spiritually invest in this country and work to make it better. If you‘re ashamed to say you love it and that you’ll stand by it, then you don’t belong here.

      Stony- Yes I think we should eliminate the pledge and the phrase “in g-d we trust” I have no problem with the flag or anthem but nice try at building a straw man. The argument isn’t that it makes people uncomfortable, my argument is that it is unconstitutional.

      Rebel- That’s a really compelling argument, makes a lot of sense. Would you agree though that it is not necessary to have religious phrasing? Do you think people would have a problem with returning to the original language of the pledge that did not have the phrase “under g-d?”

To conclude that we are all idiots or liberals or vegetarians or pot smokers or whatever just because all of the left coast states are colored blue on the map is pretty silly. Every state has its share of kooks, including mine (just north of Oregon). But every state also has its share of God-fearin’ patriots who are doing our best to turn the color of our state from blue to red. You can make fun of Oregon if you must, but we in Washington sort of considered that our job :-)

      Oregon is insane and a tough place to live, yes. It also has more natural beauty than any other state, but it is populated with anti intellectual morons. I‘m a native Oregonian and I’ve seen it my whole life. I enjoyed 8 wonderful years living in Tennessee, then returned here for family reasons. It’s beautiful….but though to live in!

      If they do not wish to recite the pledge, perhaps they should move about 150 miles due west, where it is not required.

      If you’ve ever been to Oregon, you would know this is NOT unusual.

      My observation of Oregon, from past visits, is that they tend to afford each other a great deal of privacy.

      This is a double edged sword, however.

      As a result of near-total anonymity, the wackos are free to ‘hide’ in plain sight in Oregon – tin foil hat and all.

      Maybe they need to ask a FEW more questions before electing officials there. CLEARLY they have not done so in the past. “oh, she’s a nice person, I’ll vote for her.“ ”oh, he’s on tv a lot, I’ll vote for him“ ”oh, his family owns the local grocery, I’ll vote for him“ ”oh, she eats at the same diner I do, I’ll vote for her” THAT is the level of inquiry or examination that seems to have gone into vetting their candidates – at least in that town, it would appear.

      Unless, the entire town wears tin-foil hats, and they KNEW what their council was like, but didn’t care or, they even endorsed it.

      I was forced to say the pledge of allegiance every day in grade school. I never paid attention to a word I was saying and it meant nothing to me or any other kids in the second grade. It is a useless exercise and a waste of time. It is how you live and what you believe that matters. Reciting the pledge of allegiance at the beginning of a city meeting is similarly a meaningless exercise. Does the pledge make anything decided on during the meeting more legitimate? Does not saying the pledge mean you don’t love America? Some people have an allegiance to this country and some don’t. They ALL have the right to be here. If you have to say a pledge to show your allegiance I would suggest your allegiance isn’t very strong. For those at the City Council who feel a great patriotism and allegiance to the flag then that is fine. Requiring everybody to stand and recite a meaningless stanza proves nothing. It is just another waste of time arguing about meaningless things when real work needs to be done. The It is just another diversion from our real problems, and they won’t be solved with pledges or prayers. The city council meetings went just fine without the Pledge. Will the city run better because they say the pledge? Are they in trouble now because the didn’t say the Pledge before.
      This is a ridiculous waste of time for everybody and just another manufactured controversy where there is none.

      My wife and I were eating dinner when this story came on the news tonight and both of us could not believe what we had just heard. For any of those jerks that think saying the pledge is divisive should get on a small raft and start their journey to another country.

      Contrary to public opinion, most of Oregon (geographically) is full of conservative, generous, God-fearing, hard-working people. The liberal loons unfortunately congregate in the two most populated cities – Portland and Eugene. Wacky stuff coming from the home of University of Oregon (aka Berkeley North) is pretty routine. Those areas beat out the rest of the state in population so it’s a big challenge at election time. But I keep praying…. Don’t throw us into the Pacific just yet.

      That’s not nice. There are lots of conservatives here. I am stuck here because I have elderly parents – otherwise I would be off to Texas. Maybe you could just wish for a discriminating tsunami…… Even with that, most of the liberals live in the Willamette Valley – the tsunami wouldn’t even get this far as it has to go over a mountain range.

      the mayor is tied to Code Pink,I’m shocked she agreed to recite the Pledge even 4 times a year-since libs are always offended by everything and seem to think if 1 American is offended by some speech it should be kept to yourself at home,why don’t we apply that to Code Pink & if they have ANYTHING to say,they can say it,but keep it at home to yourselves cuz it offends 99% of normal Americans,or can we deport the Pinkees to Mexico? clearly the mention of God,or salutations to our country or flag makes members of Cod Pink go into convulsions and spasms,it must be health issue,or they hate this country and founders so much,they seriously wish every town/city should adopt SanFrancisco’s laws

      As a life-long conservative Eugenean……who’s great, great grandparents came here in wagon trains in the mid 1800′s….. I am WELL AWARE of the local issues facing this town. But wishing a tidal wave on an area filled with many good people is the core of ugliness and arrogance…the size of which NO TSUNAMI can challenge. I may live in a liberal town…and battle the frustrations of this choice every day. But if I ever get to the point where I wish such horror on ANYONE…..that is the day I will question the ugliness inside myself…and stop looking at others.
