Is The V.A. Censoring ‘God’ Out of Funeral Prayers At Houston Cemetery?

Imagine how you would feel if you lost a loved one serving in the military. Your family has paid the ultimate price, protecting the freedoms that all Americans enjoy. And now friends and relatives have gathered at the “National Cemetery” for a funeral service and to pay respects to the departed. However, nothing can proceed until the words of the memorial service have been screened and approved.
Sound a little far-fetched? Well, That‘s the battle that’s been happening between Texas veterans and the Dept. of Veterans Affairs (VA) for months.
Earlier this year, the (VA) asked that all specific references to God be removed from the Memorial Day ceremonies slated to be held at the Houston cemetery. A judge granted a stay against the VA and the prayers were allowed to go on without government oversight or editing. But the battle continued, despite a very clear warning from the bench:
the judge warned the agency it had stepped too far, saying officials were essentially “decreeing how citizens honor their veterans.”
But despite the judge’s warning, it seems the censorship has continued. 740 KTRH NewsRadio in Houston has interviewed several people who have experienced it first-hand:
Attorney Jeff Mateer represents the Liberty Institute; he says the cemetery director won’t allow the use of “God” or “Jesus” unless the family submits the prayer in writing for her approval.
“In addition, director Arlene Ocasio has stated the National Memorial Ladies cannot tell families ‘God Bless,’ they cannot communicate in writing or orally,” says Mateer. “And that violates the U.S. Constitution.”
Marilyn Koepp is with the National Memorial Ladies. “I would have been appalled if when the VFW did my father’s funeral in 2004, if they could not have said ‘God,’ what is happening to our country?” she asks.
Vietnam veteran Nobelton Jones hands out shells from the 21-gun salute to families, but says the cemetery director is trying to censor him as well.
“On March 15, she said that at the District 4 ceremony, that I could not say ‘We wish that God grant you and your family grace, mercy and peace,’ she specifically said that,” claims Jones.
“It’s just unfair that somebody would ask us to take God out of our vocabulary,” Cheryl Whitfield, founder of Houston National Memorial Ladies, told the Houston Chronicle.
“I could’ve kept my mouth shut and let things happen, but when it comes to standing up for your belief in God and giving comfort to the families, I don’t want to regret not saying anything,” she added. “We all had to stand up for what we believe in.”

Posted on June 29, 2011 at 11:08amThe whole focus of a Christian funeral/memorial service is to celebrate eternal life and going to be with the Father in Heaven. Removing any mention of Him in the service, or even requiring prior approval of the text of the service, would be a deal breaker for this veteran. Just send the flag to my widow and we’ll make arrangements for services through our church. This is way beyond unbelievable.

Posted on June 29, 2011 at 11:12amGod recognizes those who believe His son, Jesus, died for their sins on the cross.
The Pharisees displayed Christ-like character on the outside, but they had no love in their hearts.
Abiding in Him produces the Fruits of the Spirit. Jesus produces love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control in you when you abide in Him. (by faith, reading scripture, and prayer) It’s too hard for us. Let Jesus do it by reading his Word.

Report Post »Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
See that part in there about prohibiting the free exercise thereof, and right to peaceful assembly?
Know what you don’t see? These words – SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE!!!
Those words are not in there. The people at military funerals have a right to assemble peacefully and to say whatever they want and to pray if it is there desire. Everyone should petition the government for the redress of this major greivance!!

What the congress cannot do no other can do and still adhear to the Constitution, the supreme law of the land.
Report Post »Making laws and regulations that go directly agaist the Constituion should be an impeachable offence. From the very top of our govt. to the very bottom. The woman in this article has no business holding the position she holds. She cannot prohibit anyone from the free excersise of their faith.
Vets and families of vets need to stand up very loudly and say enough is enough. We will pledge our allegence to our country and we will pray anytime and anywhere we feel the need. Anyone who trys to stop us is in violation of the Constitution of the United States and we should sue anyone who says a word to us about it.

Posted on June 29, 2011 at 10:56amNo, it’s not unconstitutional (not a separation of church and state issue) & I’m as upset as most Christians about this stuff, but the reality is there may be many who aren’t Christians and it does bother them to hear that in a public service. What needs to be promoted and taught is how these things are NOT a violation of the constitution, separation of church of state. So I understand the bit about how they need a request by the family for a Christian service. This is different than being allowed to teach “creationism” in public schools, along with the theory of evolution deal. Yes, this has become very prolematic bc of the growing bold rebelliousness against God in this country. 8-(

Posted on June 29, 2011 at 12:54pmBy preventing someone from using God in speech, directly goes against the 1st amendment. Also the 1st amendment does not guarantee a right to not be offended! If you hear something that offends you, then leave! You have that right of free choice.
Report Post »As a side note: There is NO such thing as “separation of Church and State”. The 1st amendment tells Congress that they can not make a law respecting religion. This means they can’t force you to believe and they cant force you to stop. No where does it say that God can not be allowed in the govt. It merely can not be forced. By making laws to not allow it is in direct conflict with the 1st amendment!

Posted on June 29, 2011 at 11:38pmThe term “ Seperation of Church and State” doesn’t appear in the Constitution!!! It comes from a letter Thomas Jerfferson wrote. To whom I forget. What people don’t understand (and the left uses to confuse the issue), “the estabishment of religion clause” means just that. The government cannot establish a STATE RELIGION such as the Church of England or the Church of America. The founders never meant that God should be taken out of government. But it has been so screwed up by the left that most people believe that now if it is a government facility or function or school you cannot call on the name of the Creator and Living God. These people will experence a rude awakening when the Second Coming gets here.

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” They are making a law then that prohibits free exercise thereof? Posted on June 29, 2011 at 4:49pm“And that violates the U.S. Constitution.” -Well wouldn’t you know it, the Constitution violates itself then! It is dated, “the Year of OUR Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty seven.” It is not dated with the Jewish system which use B.C.E./C.E. nor is it dated with the Muslim system A.H. It is dated with the Christian date in mind and a reference not to “the” Lord but to “our” Lord which is Jesus Christ.

Posted on June 29, 2011 at 7:29pmI do not know know if the ‘government’ paid for the land, but the land is reserved and dedicated for the bodies of the dead who served their country, and each one was an individual and lived his or her own individual life with their own beliefs, which are to be respected by everyone including the government, which by the way is the people of the U.S.A. Did the people vote on taking the name“God” out and off everything??? Did we tell our representatives and our senators that is what we wanted? I think it is time that we put it up for a direct vote of the all the legal U.S.Citizens.

Seperation of church and state protects people’s religions from being trampled by the state. And the phrase “seperation of church and state” is NOT EVEN IN THE CONSTITUTION
