Is This a World Record for Balloons Popped in Succession With a Laser?

This isn‘t the first time we’ve brought you the amazing balloon-laser tricks of “WorldScott,” but it is the first time we’ve seen him attempt a world record.

(Related: Can a laser ignite a firecracker inside a balloon without popping it? See for yourself…)

Here he sets up 100 balloons to pop with a 750mW – 1000mW (1W) Spyder III Krypton Laser in a domino-like fashion. If successful, it could be the world record for number of balloons popped in a single line.

Check it out:

WorldScott explains on his YouTube channel, the balloons are held in place “with specially modified cups filled with water” to  prevent them from “jostling other balloons out of position.”

WorldScott says he has submitted this to the Guinness Book of World Records. See more of WorldScott’s laser-balloon antics here.

Theoretically, couldn’t it pop a million balloons in a row? How much does the laser dissipate?

diverge; the laser diverges. there is also some scatering thats why you can see the beam. the laser will continue to pop balloons untill the irradence drops below the damage threshold of the balloon.

Oh hey! I want to play with a laser. Sometimes you just have to have fun. :)

Nothing mind blowing here. add mirrors at the end to make it 200 balloons. This is not deserving of a world record.

These pin heads have way too much time on their hands. I bet that this was paid for by a grant from the US Gov.

OK, Kudos to a neatly made setup and video, but is this record limited to small battery powered diode laser? If not, then this record will go down pretty handily with a 1000KW to 10,000 KW CO2 or Fiber laser that can be found in 1000′s of sheet metal shops across the country and around the world. I remember doing maintenance on a 2000KW machine, and part of the procedure is to shoot a piece of clean plywood from about 40ft away with a 0.1 sec beam on time. This 0.1 sec would leave a nice deep charred mark on the plywood. I‘m pretty sure it could handle 100’s if not 1000′s of balloons.

    Finally, a justification for lasers.

How about filling one of those ballons with a mixture of oxygen and acetylene?

anti climatic. energy is way to low to light the mix now a nice one watt wicked laser that will do the job.

This guy does a lot of laser videos. Anyone asking why lasers are important and why they are practical needs to disconnect from the news loop every once in a while and learn the technology that powers the world.

good use for lasers, other than popping balloons of course, SHOOTING DOWN ROCKETS that the US military is currently testing and expects to roll off the line for NAVY ship defenses sometime around 2015… and sometime around 2018 these are supposed to power the weapons that will be accompanying the F-41 stealth plane with a range of about 160miles. of course, none of these are small powered lasers anymore

Well…that will certainly come in handy if Batman is ever up against the notorius Balloon Monster of Gotham City…or BoobWoman who smites innocent bystanders with her giant implants…or maybe just pranking some clown making balloon animals at a 5 year olds birthday party.

I can totally see the practical applications of this in everyday life.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I’ll go unravel all the tissue off my toilet paper rolls, glue the tubes to gether into one long tube…and see how many I can wiz through in a horizontal line without any touching the sides. Someone get Guiness on the phone cause I’m gonna set a record!
