DENVER (The Blaze/AP) — A commercial U.S. satellite company said it has captured a photo of China’s first aircraft carrier in the Yellow Sea off the Chinese coast.
DigitalGlobe Inc. said Wednesday one of its satellites photographed the carrier on Dec. 8. A DigitalGlobe analyst found the image on Tuesday while searching through photos.
Stephen Wood, director of DigitalGlobe’s analysis center, said he’s confident the ship is the Chinese carrier because of the location and date of the photo. The carrier was on its second round of sea trials at the time.
A Pentagon spokesman didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
DigitalGlobe, based in Longmont, Colo., sells satellite imagery and analysis to clients that include the U.S. military, emergency response agencies and private companies. DigitalGlobe has three orbiting satellites and a fourth is under construction.
The aircraft carrier has generated intense international interest because of what it might portend about China’s intentions as a military power.
The former Soviet Union started building the carrier, which it called the Varyag, but never finished it. When the Soviet Union collapsed, it ended up in the hands of Ukraine, a former Soviet republic.
China bought the ship from Ukraine in 1998 and spent years refurbishing it. It had no engines, weaponry or navigation systems when China acquired it.
China has said the carrier is intended for research and training, which has led to speculation that it plans to build future copies.
Beijing is believed to be years away from being able to launch and recover aircraft from it as part of a carrier battle group.

Posted on December 15, 2011 at 2:30amOoooo, one second hand aircraft carrier with no planes. Sounds really, really scary to me. Yeah, the Chinese have such a history of world domination… Come on people, the Chinese have had the crap beaten out of them all throughout history or they have cocooned themselves within their own borders. They have to beg, borrow or steal their technology just like the old Soviet Union used to do and we all know how that turned out in the end.
The Chinese are into intrigue. Look for them to come at us sideways, not a frontal assault unless it’s defensive. Kinda like what they are doing right now here at home and around the world as we LET them destroy us economically. But they are just as vulnerable, if not more so than we are. They are brittle like ice. We may creatively morph and change and go through convolutions, but they will crack.
If they too survive the current global economic perfect wave, they will make a big show but they are really a defensive power. We’re still the greatest country on the face of the earth. That’s changing fast but we still can and probably will make the turnaround once we hit rock bottom. It’s the American way to try every single bad decision possible (quickly!) until we are scooched right up to the edge of total disaster. Then when the bricks start falling on our shoulders, we rise up and turn it all around like the Americans that we really are in our heart of hearts. It gives us something to do… :)

Posted on December 15, 2011 at 11:47amHaving a Carrier and being able to use it affectively are two mighty separate and distinct issues. Americans have been at Carrier operations since they first strapped a small bi-plane to a battle ship. We’ve come along way in Carrier design…they are nuclear powered you know…all 12 of them operational can reach any point on the globe. We can project power because we have an awesome logistics chain for refueling at sea while underway, that alone took the Russians years to figure when we had been doing it for decades. All our Carriers today have Four catapults which all can be in operation at the same time if the need arises but most of the time 2-3 are used depending how fast they want to clear the deck for the landing cycle. The Carrier is in a Battle Group that protects it from enemy aircraft miles out and there is 1-2 subs lurking in the area with the group. With nearly 100 aircraft that can carry bombs and missiles its a formidable force. The Chinese have a looonnngggg Long way to go. Its their long range missiles that can hit the US is what keeps our planners awake at night.

Posted on December 15, 2011 at 1:16pmMy bet is the “research” mission is a shake down run of the ship itself to test reliability and see if they can move to mass production, or they are testing equipment for carrier take off and landing. We do still have time, as it will take them a while to get all the odds and ends of carrier tactics and operations figured out, but I do not think it would be wise to underestimate them.

Posted on December 14, 2011 at 9:39pmThat is not the point of this carrier. Red Cell has the correct assumption about what the major threat to our nation is. EMP(electromagnetic pule) would be what the aspect of the ship that would be the scariest. I work on electronics and EMP is a very easy to build and easy to employ device and that is what would be frying electronics. How would it not destroy their ship is what you ask? It is called EMP hardening. You have to Faraday cage around your own electronics and this would be why you would care if it had aircraft, because the aircraft would be susceptible to the hardening issues. The second purpose of painting lines on the deck of the ship would be misdirection. You think it is for aircraft but in fact it is for making it look less dangerous because where are the weapons platforms? The ship is the weapon and it would wreck the modernized systems that rely too heavily on electronics, chips, and computers. If you don’t believe this concept is formidable go to:
Report Post »http://www.amazing1.com/emp.htm
This is something you can make at home, but with billions at your fingertips in funding this concept can made efficient and massive( possibly directional and have long range capability). Do research on this concept and you will see that it is fairly simple with some Electronic Engineers and huge amounts of natural resources such as copper, lead, gold, cobalt and ask yourself…..do they have these things? We must be awake and vigilant!

‘theoretically’, no, because the water should/would conduct the EMP in all directions simultaneously, away from the source, but, then …
I’m not currently engaged in super-secret EMP research at this time, either…
either way, EMP = ‘bad kitty’ under ‘useful’ conditions.

Posted on December 14, 2011 at 11:17pmI had a dream 50 years ago. It was a nightmare. I dreamed that Americans were in their homes and 2-3 Chinese soldiers came door-to-door with hand-held laser guns and hunted us down. I couldn’t get away. I couldn’t imagine why I dreamed it or how that could ever happen.
Report Post »(That was before the laser was invented or used as a weapon, I think. And what would a kid know? For my science fair project in a year or two I presented the concept of light that would travel in a straight line, and this could be done through a ruby crystal. I only got honorable mention. Some kid who copied a magazine article on what foods the astronauts might eat in space won. Judges didn’t know what to say about new ideas.)
We haven’t heard of laser hand-held weapons, have we?
Let’s ask God to guide and protect us.

Report Post »Does anyone actually know what might happen to our household electronics if there were several EMP blasts overhead? Is there a way to protect our computers, etc.? I hear different info., like mostly power supplies in appliances at the end of long power lines (such as the power company lines or household wiring) are likely to be shorted? Then I hear Glenn say buy an old car (before they had computers? Or buy an extra coil and what to replace in that car?). Others say if the EMP is too high in the atmosphere it will bounce off the ionisphere, like long range radio, and go somewhere. Others say it will affect electronics depending on distance from the source, such as 50-100 miles? Others say it will knock out the grid. What’s the truth. And where can we get the information, if there’s a way to protect some things we have? Thanks!

What Glenn said about purchasing a new coil for your car makes sense. Also purchase a spare computer for it because the ignition timing and fuel injectors are all controlled by the computer. (about $100 for a used one).
Report Post »There are some things you can do to protect electronic equipment, but it would be a bit difficult. During WW2 manufacturers such as Philco Corp and others would encase all their components in lead foil to protect them from EMP bursts which happens when a nuclear detonation occures. The component (semi-conductor) would be shielded as the electromagnetic burst could not penetrate the lead. Lead and concrete is how you shield electronics from EMP. If I was one to prepare before had I would be very selective about what to protect because space would be limited. I’m sure many of you have better ideas than me. I’d take my all band shortwave radio, VHF/UHF old style police scanner (not a newer digital type), stungun, compact amateur radio equipment, etc and place it in a heavy duty military type ammo box(es). Seal it for water proofing with lots of silica for moisture absorbtion ( soda crackers work too), and bury it under ground atliest 2-3 feet. After that pour a concrete slab over it several inches thick. It would take some work to retreve it but I’d be fairly confident that my equipment would still be in working condition…that is, if I survived what I was protecting it from. Protect your unregestered guns in a simular way. Like I said, I’m no ex

Posted on December 15, 2011 at 8:25amInstead of worrying too much about your home electronics, worry about the power grid. It goes down and you have no electricity, or running water (no pumps or controls for the water system, including sewer). Radio equipment wasn‘t purposely protected against EMP during WW2 because they didn’t know about it then. It wasn’t until nuke testing a Bikini atoll did they realize that there was such a thing. EMP wouldn’t affect basic models of appliances like stoves, refrigerators, washers and dryers IF they are mechanically controlled, i.e., knobs. While in the Army we protected electronic parts by storing them on top of rubber mats inside of a metal storage cabinet. The metal cabinet was grounded to divert the EMP away from the parts.

Posted on December 16, 2011 at 12:40amYes, very much spot on. With 4 high flying aircraft they could cover all of the US and parts of Canada. The EM Pulse deployed over the US would nullify everything electronic, including cell phones. Cars, ships, radar, missile defense systems, Power plants, hospitals, computers; anything with a computer chip would be rendered useless, within 4 days or less we would be attacking anyone with food and water. Sewer systems would be offline as well as gas plants. Disease would be rampant. 3rd world country my ***. We would be back in the Dark Ages and unprepared for survival. The dead would be in the hundreds of Millions within a month or less. The EM pulse could easily be deployed from aircraft launched from a carrier. They would only need 1 catapult to launch a lot of aircraft. As for our arsenal of advanced weaponry; can you say “USELESS”?

I also said that along with China/Magog is a great horde of other nations, and I listed Iran, Iraq, and Russia, to name a few. I said that before Obama announced that he was bringing the troops home from Iraq before Christmas and that he was quitting Iraq.

The sad fact about China’s build up is that The United States of America has enriched their enemy…China. We have helped to build up China, much to our own detriment, and we don’t even realize it. End time prophecy is moving in on us more rapidly then we understand, and we act like sheep going to the slaughter, ignoring any warnings that God is sending our way. Let me say again, as I said in mid-October…we are going to face this enemy one day on the battlefield. We better begin to rebuild a bigger and better military. I am amazed that we let one of our high tech drones walk straight into the hands of our enemies, and did absolutely nothing about it. We are just asking for trouble. Not a good thing.
