Is This Iowa High School Teaching Students Communism Is Better Than Capitalism? See the Flyer

(Updated information on this story has been added to the end of this article.)

This curious flyer was handed out to students studying the history of the Cold War at Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa.

What do you think the lesson was supposed to be?

Iowa Students Taught That Communism Is Better Than Capitalism

Let’s review.

The CAPITALISM side of the flyer shows workers in tattered clothing, chained to a machine that delivers all of the money produced to a cigar-smoking man who is also much better dressed.

Over on the COMMUNISM side, there is no boss and the smiling workers are better dressed, don’t have chains on their legs and the money goes back to them.

This gem was discovered by Simon Conway of Iowa’s Who Radio. A listener who is a parent of a student at the high school, sent the hand out to the radio host. Conway read the words of the flyer verbatim:

“Communism stands for equal sharing of the work according to the benefits and ability. But in Capitalism an individual is responsible for his works and if he wants to raise the ladder, he has to work hard.”

He continued to read and clarify further:

“While the profit of any enterprise is equally shared by all in Communism, the profit in the Capitalist structure belongs to the private owner only.”

Conway contacted Roosevelt High School for an explanation and was told that only person who could speak for the school on this topic is the principal. The Blaze has also reached out to Principal Kathie Danielson for comment. As of this writing, the principal has not responded.

UPDATE: Several calls to Roosevelt High School have gone unanswered. However, the school’s website did post a formal response. We are posting the entire statement from the school, unedited.

RADIO TALK SHOW MISREPRESENTS CLASS LESSON ON COLD WAR

A talk show on WHO Radio has unfortunately misled listeners about a class lesson about the Cold War. The radio show posted, on its web site, only a selectively edited part of a class handout – entitled “The two sides of the Cold War” – in order to give a false impression that students were being taught to support communism.

In light of the misrepresentation caused by this talk show, we have posted the handout and assignments here on our web site so that people can see the complete document for themselves. Furthermore, the class, 20th Century History, was studying the Cold War and propaganda, looking at some of the arguments both sides made about why their system was best on a range of topics, including their economies. The handout simply highlights the differences between capitalism and communism, and some of the arguments made during the period of the Cold War.

It is unfortunate that a talk show host decided to mislead his listeners in order to generate false criticism of our schools and our teachers.

That‘s why they want to control the school they have to go after the next generation we know the truth so their propaganda doesn’t work on us. Why do you think that teachers unions fight so hard that how they win by teaching next generation that freedom and liberty doesn’t work and capitalism is evil
that‘s why they have to get rid of private schools and homeschooling it’s a threat to them they can only win if we allow them to teach the next generation with their propaganda

MC, we know and we take your number. Why is it, do you think, we buy extra extra ammo? To give our argument with an extra weight when time comes.

Even if you “progressives” are successful in seizing the power, two things happen.
      1. Purges within your ranks. The less conformist elements, idealists, and those deemed malcontents (thouh useful idiots in the initial stage), will be squashed like cockroaches.
      2. People that had a smidgen of illusions about the socialism/communism will lose them pretty quickly. They’d realize the truth in ” All people are equal. Some people are more equal than others.” While under capitalism, the upward mobility s possible, in socialism when fully implemented, the society splits on two strata that solidify and there is very little movement between them. The upper caste, the nomenclatura, becomes a hereditary oligarchy (=aristocracy). I’d give it max 10 years for the nomenclatura finding itself swinging involuntarily from natural or artificial platforms.

Czechs were forgiving towards their nomenclatura because they knew they were puppets of SU, with a little will of their own. Hungarians less so in 1956, due to their more excitable nature. Romanians opted for a “mussolini” approach as Ceaucescus were concerned. Americans, when they get really pi$$ed off, boy, you have no idea!

Both sides use propaganda. The use of propaganda isn’t new nor is it only one sided. Besides, no one is trying to get rid of public schools or homeschooling. Both are far more wide spread than they were even 10 or 20 years ago. If you don’t like what is taught in the schools, then just teach your kids what you believe to be true. As parents, you have far more influence over your kids than any of their teachers do.

The problem is that all the hippies from the 1960′s have weasled their way into our government offices and learning facilities. They are getting around retirement age and will be moving out of the way soon. Good thing is that most kids don’t listen to these imbeciles or even know what communism means. The only kids these ex-hippies reach are the Occupy idiots that have no clear message and smell like pot smoke while wearing a metal bar through their nose. 5 to 10 more years and these hipsters will be retiring and getting out of our establishments.

These people will never give up. It’s amazing that after all the history clearly showing the very low standard of living that takes place under a communist system, that there are still people that think life would be so much better. These people need to be removed from the job of educating our kids.

Have you met my generation? I call it Generation I….for Gerneration Indoctrinated. My generation is unfortunately the very first to be fully indoctrinated by the liberal education machine into thinking they all deserve something for nothing. It has a piss poor if any work ethic. 90% of them smoke pot. Which to me is not a bad thing in itself but you brought that up. Almost all think of democrats for the people and the betterment of society, and republicans as rich whale supporters out to take from them. How do you think Obama got in? My entire gen voted for him based on 2 things…1: “he’s not Bush or a Republican” 2: “He’s Black and therefore it would be a great step for this country.” not one of them could name a single policy he stood for in his platform for president. They are a gullable mass of retarded special kids who blindly follow what the LEDIA, Government, and Europeans tell them to do. They have no concept of self responsibility or actions thereof. So your theory of the hippies retiring and not being around. Yeah they wont be because they achieved their goal of brainwashing the youth who will take over their cause and support them in their old age.

Come on, Shupp, this is the one weak statement in your comment. Drug addiction is part of the agenda. Moral anarchism works in perfect sync with communism. These kids live in an alternate world produced by habitual pot smoking. Pot affects memory and the ability to concentrate. You’ll never make an alpha male out of a weed addict. What you get are Obama-types, men lacking the drive to get this economy back on track or do anything productive in life.

Having been a ‘Hippie’ and living in the SF Bay Area during the late 60‘s it is clear to me that a lot of you commenting on the mindset of ’Hippies’ have not direct experience. FWIW the original (not the johnny-come-lately druggy) ‘Hippies’ were NOT revolutionaries or communists. They were Liberitarians. They believed in live and let live and personal responsablity. Lyndon Johnson, that great socialist, was ridiculed even in ‘Hippie’ music (ref. the band Electric Flag where at the begining of a song a Johnson speech is greeted with a laugh track). This is not to say that there were not revolutionaries (the SDS for example) but they were not ‘Hippies’ and made a point of this themselves. Except for anit-war sentiment they were not especially political. Also ‘Hippies’ were always looking for the good in every person and situation. Lastly, not all ‘Hippies’ took drugs (me for example). FWIW, I am a ‘Paleo-Conservative’ (see Google) and worked for Barry Goldwater and even had a conversation in an elevator with William F. Buckley.

Nah, just needs a little editing and explaining. The left side of the drawing is missing the word STATE (sorry, kids, mistakes do happen). STATE CAPITALISM, aka as neo-communism is what they have in China, e.g., where people are slaves for life, and have to work their @ss off for the capitalist commie elite. The COMMUNIST SIDE, is old school, aka as Marxism, and it is portrayed to look good on the surface to useful idiots. But you are no idiots, so you get it. There is no boss because the commie dictator, Obum, for example, is always away, playing golf, throwing lavish parties and vacationing on taxpayer money. The two guys getting all the money represent his union leaders and apparatchiks. As you can see, they never sweat because they don’t work. They just collect, hence the term “collectivism” (lol). The worker is a nonentity, so he/she is invisible. As a worker you are represented by the machine, because communism dehumanizes. All that matters is what you produce for the state elite. You are erased. And there you have it, kids. Communism sucks.

On paper and in theory Communism appears to be a beneficial form of doing things. Unfortunately in actual practice the system falls apart because most people are flawed by greed, arrogance and sloth. The greedy take more than their share, the arrogant want to run other people’s lives and the slothful just want to be taken care of without working. People are not flawed by greed. People are naturally attracted to collecting the things they need to survive. Do not mistake this natural process with the label of greed.

Greed is only truly greed when coercion, extortion or fraud are used to attain. So long as honest value is traded for honest value and both sides consent without deception, there is no greed in the equation.

Communism doesn’t work because it revolves around suppressing the strongest drive of human nature.
Humans naturally want to reap the benefits of our own labor.
When we take risks, we want to be able to reap the benefits if the risks pay off.
We don’t want to support and coddle lazy parasites.
We want to have a say in how our society is run.

I could go on, but those are just a few of the reasons why Communism/Socialism/Liberalism/Fascism/THE LEFT does not work and N E V E R will.
They are but a few reasons why Capitalism is the best and most prosperous system ever conceived.
They are also reasons why every attempt at absorbing Left leaning principles in our society has been a miserable disaster and continue to increase poverty and misery

BIGJAYINPA; What is “fair share” and who determines what that is?

American freedom and capitalism has given the world more in the past 233 years than any other civilization in the past 5,000.

Communism hasn’t worked ANYWHERE it has been tried. EVEN China has learned to embrace capitalism of some sort. Communism brought down East Germany, it brought down the Soviet Union, it is bringing down Cuba.

Why doesn’t it work? Because it creates tremendous shortages of EVERY necessity.

Anyone under the age of 30 doesn’t remember what it looked like in communist countries. They’ve never seen the long lines for bread and even toilet paper. They’ve not ever spoken to anyone who grew up under the brutal dictatorship of someone like Mao, or Stalin, or Pol Pot, or Hitler or Tojo.

They glorify Che Guevara. They plaster his image on T-shirts, billboards, and many useful idiots even have his picture as their Facebook Profile pic.

The history of the failure of Communism has been scrubbed from our public education system.

Mama Obama told us during the 2008 campaign that “We need to change our history. We need to change our culture.”

WHY DIDN’T ANYONE QUESTION HER ABOUT WHAT THAT MEANT AND WHY SHE SAID IT? WHY DIDN’T THEY ASK WHAT OBAMA MEANT WHEN HE SAID, “We’re just five days away from FUNDAMENTALLY CHANGING AMERICA”?

Communism falls apart because the motivated always float to the top. There is always a leader and always followers in any system. The leader always enjoys a better existence than the follower. For people who want the benefits of communal effort and sharing of the profit, they should look into starting their own business and working with a co-op group to sell what they produce. It is the only part of “communism” that can work and it doesn’t require losing ones rights or freedom. Buy local.

“Under Capitalism man exploits man, under Communism the reverse is true.”
The reason Communism and Socialism always devolve into repression is a simple law of nature. In fact, it is essentially Darwinism.
Under Capitalism, goods and services are distributed based on the relative power of individuals to exercise their will. Power is measured with money which increases as one provides goods and services and decreases as they are consumed.
Under Socialism, money is replaced with political power which increases by instilling fear that more goods and services will be confiscated from those who object and planting the hope that more goods and services will be given to those who provide political support.

“…co-op group to sell what they produce. It is the only part of “communism” that can work”

Nope. Co-ops are not a part of communism, as an idea. The origin of co-op as concept is in guilds. The co-op under communism, though used as a label or moniker for a certain structure, was rather a part of central command economy, fully plugged into the top-down system of dirigism, with no independence, and not at all voluntary–it was a part of the coercion machine and the state was the grim reaper of proceeds/profits, if perchance there happened to be some.

Marx’s children starved to death…That is real communism. It is a theory that cannot work with real, thinking human beings. The reality of the slothful getting the same as the artisan worker is folly. Capitalism works better, if you produce, you get paid. If you don’t produce, you don’t get paid. It gives incentive to produce. The better you produce, the more you get paid…Improves the quality of the goods. The whole problem is rooted in modern mans inherent laziness and the desire to receive without doing. The world needs to abandon money and go back to subsistence farming and local barter, local craftsman. WWIII will provide the opportunity to do just that, as the systems are soon to collapse under their own weight, with the help of the termite infested support beams (aka, commies, progressives, and OWS ner-do-wells)

ReynMansson, the communism is an utopian ideology. No utopian system can work, because it is reductionist. It does not take into account human nature. Communists wanted to change the human nature (let’s not go into discourse why that in itself was an expression of evil), but in order to do that, they needed to use means to the end. The moment that happens, the whole utopian construct is negated, as the stratification takes place. The actual disparities that the communism was supposed to fix get even more pronounced and this bifurcation gets sets in stone. You end up with an oligarchy in which interest is to hold reins of power into perpetuity.

To argue that the theoretical doctrine has never been implemented is inane and a sign that your ability to think for yourself is impaired. The means to an end are the actual implementation devices, and they are described in the communism’s edifices. That should already give a pause, to say the least, to anyone who studies it.

REYNMANSSON, America was never established as true democracy and that was by design. Pure democracies have failed miserably in the past. Ancient Greece imploded itself with a pure form of democracy, and Rome was doing the same thing when Caesar turned it into a dictatorship. America from the beginning was established as a democratic republic for good reason. Unfortunately, the left has dragged into the muck and mire where we stand today.

what is the difference in communism and capitalism both let the elite be authoritarian…
when the few get to have it all! one set of laws for them and one set for us peons
still no banksters in prison-seems like america capitalism is communism-
capitalism is commumism with the illusion-that its not
capitalism said it would fix education its failed-
capitalism said it would make healthcare affordable its failed
capitalism said it would create jobs it has failed
capitalists say we believe in free-enterprise but love to privatize the profits and socialize the losses
capitalists have not fixed one issue-
99 percent of medications are made in universities funded by the government then patented by corporations theft-via us tax payers funding it
99 percent of technology comes out of universities.. funded by the government theft by us tax payers funding it

capitalism is just a inversion of communism exact same thing- just a different name
i just love it when people say capitalism is free- i just love it when capitalists say-
the monitary system is not socialist! who created it-the people! no one owns resources under capitalism it is leased -

rich people do not create anything- they are the middle men who inflate and deflate the costs of services…and that is– how it is

Umm, no Mr Molotov Cocktail, you are referring to socialism on both sides. True free market capitalism and socialism are not the same. If you are referring to our system of “capitalism”, that is nothing more than socialism being gamed to look like a free market. Get it right sparky, government enforced collectivism has nothing to do with true free markets. Instead of Capitalism and socialism, let’s just call them what they really are, Freedom and tyranny. Thank God we live in a place where Freedom loving people are armed and can contest the “vote” of idiot statists.

      Molotov-
Under our system, you agree to a wage for your effort from the employer. When the employer get richer than you from the deal, you don’t have a right to complain, if you were given the agreed upon wage. If you think you are worth more, renegotiate or go somewhere else. If you can’t find someone to pay you what you feel you are worth, start your own business. It is up to YOU to be successful. If you borrow money, how can you complain about the lender? You signed the deal. Don’t want ot pay it back or have your home foreclosed on, don’t get a loan. Do it the old fashioned way, earn the money then buy what you want. It really isn’t that hard. If the bankers break the law, they should go to jail. The law should not be changed so you can put them away after the fact.
If you want to eat, grow your own.
If you want a nicer house, build it yourself.
If you don’t like being poor, stop being poor. Clean yourself up, get off your duff and earn money or create the things you desire, you can never be poor unless you let yourself become so.

People are people. There will be good and bad in any group. Their presense or claims to membership in the group does not support or negate the beliefs of the group. In many cases, people claim mambership in a group as cover for their subversive behavior: Pedophile priests, Progressive Republicans, Crony Capitalists, Abu-Graib “soldiers”, Moderates. What separates the better systems from the dangerous ones is what happens to those who are exposed. When there are no competing organizations or open processes, the subversives gain and retain control.

They have as many minorities as south and east side schools as well. Which is very few considering Des Moines is >90% white. Either way the assignment is ridiculous for any group of kids. Communism is not a classless society, there are only two classes the workers and the elites and they stay that way for life no upward mobility or chance to escape to a higher income bracket. All workers are equally poor.

You forgot to mention that history proves communism/socialism always collapses under it’s own weight because like Margaret said, “eventually you run out of others peoples money”. We are watching what you hold up as our future happening in Greece. History is on the side of conservatism which is why your socialist Utopia will never come to fruition in this country. Better quit watching your propaganda TV and listening to Obama because you will be very disappointed next year when you are told that the free lunch is over and if you don’t work you will starve to death. I can honestly say from my observations that the Communist side of the flyer should be the one on the left. Naturally too. But there would be no boss collecting the money. They were always inefficient and even figuring a way to produce much of anything with actual value. A better change to the pic should be the boss standing behind the forced laborers with a bull whip.

Despite the indoctrination at school, at the age of 10 when I was able to analyze the system and form my own conclusions, I knew already that the whole communist construct is a con job. Nothing that followed could dispel it, just the opposite. At the age 25 I’ve had enough. It took me 5 years and several trials to get outta there.

TWOBYFOUR, Congrats to you. During my first of three tours in Germany we had the chance to visit the main crossing from West Germany into Czechoslovakia. The moment we stepped off the buses and before approaching the shallow stone wall which is as far as we were allowed to go, we got a briefing from the Cav unit there. We were told that we were being photographed from the Czech side with very high powered cameras, and to think well before we made any movements especially when moving our hands. They were waiting to be able to distort any potential photograph into an international incident. Parents were warned to have their children keep their hands in their pockets. This was taken so seriously that flipping the bird would almost be a hanging offense. Later I was stationed with an NCO who did flip the bird at an aircraft while stationed in Berlin. He was on his way to Hohenfels within the hour. They sent the contents of his room later, and he came to his with only the uniform that he was wearing on duty earlier. Anyway, while watching the Czech side of the crossing through binoculars it was nothing but depressing in appearance. As bad as that seemed, it appeared to me that the East German side was far worse. Glad to hear that you made it out of there safely.

Teachers are not too bright, so we have to expect this to happen.

The “2000 Profile of College Bound Seniors,” a report from the College Board which administers the SAT, tracked what majors 10,280 Michigan high school students chose in college. The highest SAT scorers shunned education majors, the lowest scorers chose education majors. Of the 6 percent of students who selected education as a major, their average math score was 35 points below the state average and 26 points below in verbal scores. Would-be teacher majors tied with “home economics” majors. And the results of their performance are obvious, to the whole world:
12/7/07 Washington Post: “The scores from the 2006 Program for International Student Assessment showed that U.S. 15-year-olds trailed their peers from many industrialized countries. The average science score of U.S. students lagged behind those in 16 of 30 countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, a Paris-based group that represents the world’s richest countries. The U.S. students were further behind in math, trailing counterparts in 23 countries.”

How you can make the jump from my comment to thinking I support communism is pretty incredible.

To reiterate, all I said was that before anyone makes a judgement, the full context of the drawing needs to come to light. Without that, this drawing really means nothing. For all you know, it was used as an example for an exercise in propaganda or shown as example of the flyers distributed in the USSR.

Without knowing more, it is no more likely that this drawing was used to promote communism than it was to criticize communism.

Also, doesn’t Glenn tell you to do your own homework? Apparently Blaze writers know that most of you don’t do your own homework and just jump to a conclusion from whatever is posted on this site, regardless of how little information or facts are included in the article.

The funny thing is that the article does provide some context that, combined with the quality of the drawings, tells me what was most likely going on.

From the FIRST sentence in the article “This curious flyer was handed out to students studying the history of the Cold War”

So odds are this was an old piece of Cold War propaganda in favour of communism. So it actually makes sense. When we studied the 50′s in high school we watched everything from “Duck and Cover” to “Rebel Without A Cause”. This was all about getting an understanding of the time by looking at it’s artifacts.

Godfather.1…..how hard would it be for the school to simply say what the flyer was used for? If it was used as some have suggested on here to show Soviet Propaganda then it wouldn’t have even taken 5 minutes to explain this. After all shouldn’t the Principal know what is being taught in her school. How hard is it for her to walk down to the teacher’s room and ask? Sorry but there is a very hard push in our public school system to indoctrinate and push socialism/communism. If you do not see this then you are completely blind. Now you point out that the Principal may be “too busy”, however, what about the concerned parent who brought this to the local radio station? Is she “too busy” to discuss this parent concerns? I’m sorry but to say they are “too busy” is nothing more than a copout.

As for me stating you were a liberal..that was wrong of me to assume because I don’t know you. However, as I said above…it would not take this school 5 minutes to give a response and there have been countless examples of teachers promoting liberal/progressive/socialist/communist views in our public schools.

Funny thing is millions of Americans believe that picture. You would think that being the world has tried this multiple times and that communism always gets to the point were workers are chained to machines in tattered clothes they would know better. In a country were 1 in 7 are on welfare and 1/2 get more from the government then they give communism could never work. The only way communism could ever work is if all people’s favorite thing was working and had the morals not to cheat the system. Funny thing though if that was true then capitalism would still out preform it in all ways. No to have true communism the people have to be robots, much like an ant colony. Being that most people don’t carry their own weight now, the state would have to trim the useless fat and for the most part thats the people that want income redistribution. One thing I find interesting about the other side they hate those that believe their lies and if given their way they would remove them from the gene pool.

Our chickens have come home to roost! We’ve been headed in this direction for decades. The communists, socialists, marxists and other 1960′s radicals all hid in the colleges and univerisities, teaching their “crap” to us and our children. I guess their “Bat Signal” went out 3 years ago when Obama was elected. Now they are unleashing their propoganda at full spead.

I get so tired of these marxist, pseudo-intellectuals who keep thinking the “grand utopia” is the only answer. They also keep forgetting (conveniently) that it ALWAYS FAILS! Please! Where is our McCarthy?

NOKOOLAIDDRINKER…..You fail to realize that those who are truly pushing for Socialism/Communism will not suffer. They have positioned themselves to reap all of the rewards. And they have “educated” (aka brainwashed) everyone into thinking that it is great. These individuals will not realize how bad it is until it is too late.

Popp40, actually, not so clear cut. Many of the “pushers” are actually useful idiots kind. They are for a big surprise, if it ever comes to pass. Some of them may not survive the first 5-year plan. They will be ones considered by the state apparatus to be subversives (after all, they already displayed that trait and established these creds, didn’t they?) and disposed off with prejudice, through show trials, or through no trials at all, rewarded by a work opportunity in a gulag/work camp.

Or are you just a big bunch of verbal bullies ? Thanks for the heads up and the warning. I will be sure to pass this information on to those who need to be ready for you ! ( bet you’re breaking out those black hoodies and your Molotov cocktails…shades of Communism and anarchy… too bad your parents din’t raise you better..what a waste of my tax dollars – both on your sad education and your future incarceration ) You are being destroyed by hate.
