Is This ‘Miraculous’ Glowing Halo the Place Where Moses Saw God?

Historians, theologians and the faithful have for centuries wanted to know: Where is the holy mountain where Moses met God?
Theories have ranged from the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt to the Arabian Peninsula of modern-day Saudi Arabia. Israeli researchers who stumbled upon a surprising glowing halo are asking, along with an Italian archaeologist who first floated the theory: could the burning bush have actually been in Israel’s Negev desert, just north of the Sinai?
Channel 2 reports (translated from Hebrew):
“On the border with Egypt, in an isolated firing range in the Negev, one of the mountains vying for the title can be found – Mount Karkum. Researchers recently discovered that once a year, at a unique time, something very strange occurs. An unusual natural phenomenon or perhaps a massive scientific discovery? Watch and try to believe.”
On Saturday, a news crew from Israel’s Channel 2 went along with one of the researchers on a trek to the remote site of Mount Karkum, or Turmeric Mountain. (Yes, in the Holy Land, biblical archaeology often makes the cut of hot news items).
A brief biblical recap:
In the beginning of Exodus Chapter 3, Moses tends his father-in-law Jethro’s flock. When he arrives at Mount Horeb, an angel of God appears to him in a bush that continually burns but is not consumed. God tells Moses not to get closer and to take off his shoes, because he is standing on holy ground.
Mount Horeb is considered by most biblical scholars to be interchangeable with Mount Sinai, and with “the Mountain of God.” It is also where Moses prepares to receive the Ten Commandments in Exodus 19.
Dr. Haim Berger, a zooanthropologist at Sde Boker College and a jeep tour guide says Mount Karkum holds some 40,000 stone drawings thousands of years old. Channel 2 reports that the geographical location and finding of artifacts led the Italian archaeologist Emanuel Anati to come to a conclusion that “if verified it will shake the scientific and maybe even religious world: Mount Karkum, is essentially Mount Sinai.”
Berger believes this etching found on the site depicts the two tablets of the covenant on which the Ten Commandments were written which “established the destiny of the Jewish nation.”
Berger believes this etching is a map showing the three ridges of the mountain. On the right of the middle V, he says a marking denotes the burning bush:
But what’s gotten people talking is an unusual vision seen only once a year during the month of December. Yigal Granot, an ecologist at Sde Boker College, says he first visited the site in 2003:
“We arrived here. I simply turned my head and suddenly I see a round gate surrounded by a golden halo that shouldn’t be there. There’s nothing there. As it appears, a person can’t get over there. It’s a protruding wall overlooking an abyss…I didn’t understand what I was seeing.”
His driver at the time photographed the site in black and white. Granot explains that in addition to the golden halo one can see rays coming out of the cave:
One tourist tells Channel 2, “I suddenly saw it sort of light up like a flashlight from inside the mountain. I didn’t understand what it was.”
The Blaze spoke to biblical scholars who caution against jumping to conclusions. Jonathan Ben-Dov, Professor of Bible Studies at Haifa University, tells The Blaze that like many biblical geography efforts, the quest for Mount Sinai has been controversial:
“There are many theories in historical geography. One person says it’s in Saudi Arabia. There are many other theories, too. I wouldn’t say Karkum is the most convincing one of them all. But it’s entirely and absolutely a fascinating place because of the special concentration of rock carvings. You don’t find these things very often.”
Whether the carvings depict the burning bush or the tablets of the covenant, he says, requires “some creative imagination.”
Ben-Dov suggests those trying to pinpoint the location of Mount Sinai need to map out the entire itinerary of Moses’ journey and then figure out how Mount Sinai fit into that journey.
Dr. David Ben-Gad HaCohen, a biblical geographer who did his PhD on the geography of the Exodus tells The Blaze that Mount Karkum “probably was a holy site, but we have plenty of sites with inscriptions all over the area.”
In order to understand the lay of the land, you have to examine the biblical data, which in three cases, he says, disprove Karkum as being the location where Moses met God.
First, in Exodus 4:27, the mountain of God where Moses saw the burning bush is also where he met his brother Aaron. It is described as lying between Egypt and Midian. Dr. HaCohen says Karkum is not along that route.
Second, the location is mentioned in Numbers 10:29 when Moses and his father-in-law Jethro (now named Reuel) part ways, Moses heading toward Kadesh-barnea and Jethro back to Midian. There is only one mountain at the junction between the two places, and HaCohen suggests Mount Karkum is not a candidate.
Thirdly, Deuteronomy 1:2 describes Mount Horeb as an 11-day journey from Kadesh-barnea. Dr. HaCohen explains that moving sheep and goats would allow for 7-10 miles per day. Mount Karkum is a lot closer to Kadesh-barnea than an 11-day trek, he says.
Despite the skepticism, the ecologist Granot is convinced of the spiritual presence at Karkum:
“There are miracles on this mountain. I was here with a religious group and it was a cloudy day with no sun and I’m driving and asking myself ‘What am I doing? People came to see the cave and there’s nothing.’ We arrived here. They sat down when suddenly there’s a hole in the clouds … at noon. A hole in the clouds and they saw how it [the cave] ‘turned on’ and when we turned to leave the hole closed up.”
Watch the video from Israel Channel 2 News. It’s in Hebrew, but at 8:55 you can see the halo around the cave’s entrance. Optical illusion or a miraculous discovery?

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 2:09pmThis is just a tourist site. If this was really an amazing discovery, archaeologist would be all over this. What would be fascinating about this story is what is in the cave (if anything),. I mean do you not think someone would have made the effort to explore the cave and if they found anything, it would have been reported? Also, the camera’s should be able to zoom in really close-in on the cave to get a closer look, yet all the camera’s seem only to get close enough to see the “glow”.
There is yellow and sometimes reddish limestone all over the southwest U.S. that will appear to glow yellowish when the sun is just right.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 2:01pmWho knows what is going on here? I don’t but, to draw conclusions, pro or con, is not the right thing to do. The right thing to do is study it and then, with data, make the conclusion. Anyway, it is very interesting. If you believe, that’s ok. If you don‘t that’s ok too.

Not only did I see it, BUT, take a second look when they back away from the rocks with the cave, then see if you don’t see beside the man in the robe, the ridge, (or whatever you want to call it) forms a man’s head, with the cave as the eye. ARE WE PERHAPS LOOKING AT THE EYE OF GOD IN THAT ROCK FORMATION? (The TBI just kicked in, can’t think of the word for the face in sideways profile, and I was an art major in HS, couldn’t afford art school due to illness, but should know that word.) Posted on December 21, 2011 at 10:00amNow comes wisdom.
What does an oily pile of rags do if left unattended? It can ignite and start a fire, especially fast in direct sunlight.
Mature cannabis has an exceptional amount of essential oil content. If a fully ripe cannabis plant was growing on that mountain, the oils on the surface of the plant could be ignited by the sun, especially dead, dry leaves still attached to the plant. The oils and dead leaves would be burned without consuming the rest of the plant due to water content. Additionally, the oil vaporized by the sun could be ignited by an electrical spark, a phenomenon of mountainous regions where static builds up and dielectric breakdown occurs. Approaching a burning cannabis plant would get Moses high.
The menorah is a symbol of the burning cannabis plant. “Kaneh Bosm” or “Qaneh Bosm” is an ingredient in the Holy Annointing Oil which Jesus Christ was annointed with. Kaneh Bosm is Cannabis- the mature BOSOM (nurturing sex organ) of the cannabis plant.
The Burning Bush is the Cannabis plant. The cannabis plant is an entheogen. YHWH appeared to Moses out of the midst of the burning Cannabis plant. Cannabis was offered to YHWH as a sacrifice. The image carved on that stone of the Burning Bush is an image of the Menorah (marijuana plant).

The oil is also a very good fuel oil that burns for a LONG time (with high octane). I could see the oil from the story of Hannukah being extracted from Qaneh Bosm (Cannabis).
The Holy Annointing Oil calls for almost 9 lbs of fresh dried Kaneh Bosm tops to be soaked in olive oil to create a tincture.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 1:40pmGuys, I’m not trying to be a troll or anything but this is not what these people are claiming it is… it obvious that it’s a simple hole in a thin part of the canyon wall that is sticking out. It is pretty apparent in the black and white photo, they even describe the site as a “protruding wall overlooking an abyss”. If you can’t see it in that picture go to the 8:33 mark on the video, as it zooms in you can clearly see that this is a thin finger of rock that is sticking out and appearance of the halo is the sun hitting the opposite side of the arch illuminating the inner ring. That is also why it would appear to have “rays coming out of the cave”.
I would love for this story to be true but it’s not and what is upseting is that that people who filmed this HAVE to know what it is and they still put this out.

No.
The Holy Scriptures are very accurate as to giving details such as places, dates, people. Moses was not confused when he mentioned places such as Mt. Horeb, or Mt. Sinai. Now because of time and events happening in the area, the names of these places may not be the same as in Moses’ day. Another thing to consider is God does not want us to know where these places are, to prevent us from worshiping the site or Moses rather than God Himself. Remember, when Moses died, it was not know where is body or grave was for this very reason.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 1:45pmMoses was raised by his own mother in his own home until he was weaned, which could have been up to five years old back then. I expect he learned to speak Hebrew in that time.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 10:51pmIt would seem so, but that’s not why he used Aaron to interpret (Speak for him) Exodus 4:10 he tells God he is not eloquent but, “Slow of speech” (which many believe means he stuttered sometimes.) For proof that he could speak “to” the Hebrews look at Exodus 2:13 (No interpreter there.) “He said to him that did the wrong,…” And when the Hebrew answered it doesn’t mention an interpreter just tells what he told Moses, and that Moses said , “Surely this thing is known.”

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 12:50pmVery interesting. Even though I believe all religion (Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam, etc.) is man-made I do believe our ancestors were influenced by a wide range of ides, customs, traditions, different things they saw in their environment, and so on. This can influence how we see the story of Exodus.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 1:55pmSo miracles that have been reported have no credibility with you. So I assume that if a cancer treatment is reported to you and you had need you would not bother to go and see?
I’ll bet you had a hard time reading text books and believing anything unless you can verify your reading material in a 100% fashion. I read a guy named Washington crossed the Delware river but because you were not there to see it for you it is only here-say.
So do you believe anything you read?

Hey, remember what a stir A LOT OF PHOTO SHOP made a few years ago, when AP did ALL THOSE PICTURES OF ISRAEL BOMBING LEBANON? WHEN THEY PROVED THE SMOKE & CROWDS WERE PHOTO SHOPPED, AND THE SAME GUY & LITTLE GIRL WERE ALL OVER THE PLACE? Well, guess what? This time the Photos support Israel’s History in their land, does it bother you?
