Is This Socialist Supporter the Iowa H.S. Teacher Who Handed Out a Pro-Communism Cartoon?

One of Friday’s highest trafficked and most-commented on stories on The Blaze website was the item about a curious flyer handed out to High School students in a Des Moines high school.

Is this the teacher who handed out Pro Communism Cartoons In An Iowa HS?

The school has yet to directly respond to phone calls or emails from The Blaze. We did publish the entire, unedited reaction post from Roosevelt High School’s website and have linked to what they claim is the full hand-out given to the students.

However, many questions still remain.

  • Why is the school’s principal, Ms. Danielson, not responding to any of our requests for clarification or comment?
  • Why did the school publicly denigrate the radio coverage of the flyer, but refuse to appear on Simon Conway’s show?
  • Who is the teacher and what do we know about this person?

The first two questions remain unanswered. The third question about the identity of the teacher involved in this history lesson, appears to have been solved.  Based on information that has since been scrubbed from Facebook, we believe the teacher is a man named Patrick Brennan. Here is how we came about the information.

A Blaze reader from the area forwarded us the following screen capture of a now-deleted Facebook page from a woman who claimed to be the wife of the teacher in question.

Is this the teacher who handed out Pro Communism Cartoons In An Iowa HS?

(The Des Moines Register blog post referenced in this Facebook post is available here.)

If it was not perfectly clear that Stephanie Layne Brennan is claiming that her husband is the teacher in question, we offer this comment that was also added by Stephanie after someone asked her to clarify her initial post.

Is this the teacher who handed out Pro Communism Cartoons In An Iowa HS?

The Blaze also managed to acquire Ms. Brennan’s personal email address and wrote to her on Friday, requesting further clarification. There has been no response of any kind from Ms. Brennan.

Additional investigative work turned up some interesting Facebook posts (also now scrubbed from the web) from a man claiming to be Stephanie’s husband, Patrick Brennan.

Is this the teacher who handed out Pro Communism Cartoons In An Iowa HS?While we have not connected with either of the Brennans via email or phone to confirm or deny that this Facebook user is the same one mentioned by Stephanie, we note that Patrick’s profile appears to connect him to the woman in the Facebook post above.

His work status claims that he is a “Mental Health Instructor” and not a teacher at Roosevelt High School in Des Moines. However, his wife claimed that Patrick is new to the job of teaching at Roosevelt. “My husband has only been teaching for three weeks.”

Reviewing more of the screen-capped pages from Patrick’s now-sanitized Facebook account we note the following.

  • His profile picture seems to show that his loyalties are with pro-union people;

Is this the teacher who handed out Pro Communism Cartoons In An Iowa HS?

  • Patrick Brennan’s pro-union stance seems to also be backed up by his posted feelings on Wisconsin Governor, Scott Walker; (the profane descriptions are from Brennan)

Is this the teacher who handed out Pro Communism Cartoons In An Iowa HS?

  • From the same screen capped images on Patrick Brennan’s Facebook wall comes a statement supporting the Occupy Wall Street movement;

Is this the teacher who handed out Pro Communism Cartoons In An Iowa HS?

  • Based on the previous postings, would it surprise you to know that Patrick Brennan is also a professed supporter of the Socialist Party of America?

Is this the teacher who handed out Pro Communism Cartoons In An Iowa HS?
If this is the teacher who handed out a flyer to high school students that seemed to subtly support the concept that Communism was better than Capitalism, wouldn’t his public support of the Socialist Party USA make sense?

Our offer to speak directly to Mr. & Mrs. Brennan still stands. We would like to hear and post your side of the story. You have our contact information. The ball is in your court.

Investigative update:

Additional information uncovered during our background searches on Roosevelt High School and Principal Danielson turned up a controversial incident from the Fall of 2007.

Dr. Alveda King (the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.) was scheduled to speak at the school, but was abruptly disinvited after Principal Danielson received a couple of complaints and discovered that Dr. King’s speech (predominantly about the Civil Rights struggle) also included suggestions about abstinence and support for the pro-life movement.

The cancellation made the headlines in the community and according to a published report from Life News, even the ACLU found it to be unwise:

Surprisingly, the pro-abortion Iowa ACLU said the school was wrong to make the decision and representative Ben Stone told the Register that Danielson is doing a ‘disservice’ because it makes the school appear to be shielding its students from various viewpoints on abortion.

My nephew, 1st grade, was asked by my brother what he had learned about Christopher Columbus at school on Columbus Day. He replied that Columbus was a bad man and was mean to the Indians. My brother insisted he must have done something good to have a holiday, but my nephew said no, he was a bad man. I joked that he shouldn’t worry, they don‘t start teaching capitalism is evil and that freedom isn’t fair until 3rd grade. I thought it was a joke, maybe it wasn’t.

This kind of teacher indoctrination is the union’s signature move. You have a room full of captive children and with no one to rebut the teacher. Then they force their communistic agenda on them! You people should be ashamed for what you are doing but instead you keep singing “The Devils song“ http://www.reverbnation.com/play_now/song_10789987 just for you!

When the Lefties in the 60′s were able to get the “ Columbus was an evil white European man who exploited the natives ” to replace the idea that he was a brave explorer who overcame fear and took risks to explore, our Western world took a turn for the worse. That was when the Discrimination Card took over , and hate/revenge/ social justice became the dogma brainwashed into our kids ( Obama was one of these kids ) We are now reaping the twisted, anger and hate of kids who have been mentored this way. Sad for everyone.

      Look at the cartoon.
On the left side, the men are working.
On the right side, nobody is working,
yet the money is flowing to them.

That’s the union dream, nobody has to work.

If your a DEM would you want that teacher teaching my viwes to your kids. Rember power can all ways turn. Then it will be my side turn to teach the kids. This is wrong we all need to stop this both sides. I want my kids to learn and have a open mind. Not to be told what is right and wrong and what way to think. Think hard people.

      Yo Oldironsides:
Not to “tell” you … but “dad” should MAKE THE EFFORT to correct this teaching and “SHOW” his son the truth. Then he will know it ,and he will also learn to be wise and not blindly believe what is taught, and not to mention it will strengthen the bond of love and trust between them. It is a great teaching moment … do not joke about it and let it pass buy, cause one day the son will hate the Dad, because the dad “believes lies”,, and they will have nothing in common … and all this because a “moment’ was let pass.

OK so I get the part about the brave explorer and of course the linking of his first discovery of America’s eastern shore (which is controversial in history) and subsequent colonization @ Plymouth, Massachusetts. I think though that it is OK to look back at history and reevaluate steps taken even though we may have directly benefited from that history. The colonization that occurred following Columbus was not the first and its was not based on the democratic ideals we fight for today. To take offence that someone has a different view point about the colonization of America is pretty short sided. However, I do agree that it is improper to vilify Columbus or the colonization in the minds of children for something we had no hand in doing. If history is presented emotively then it most present all the emotive aspects. I think politics dose a disservice to history in that many politicians grasp a portion of history and make it appear perhaps more or less patriotic (one sided) than it was. History can’t be a symbol of who we are now unless it includes no emotion or all emotion. It is wrong to present history through the lens of one emotion. Think about how Clint Eastwood presented The Battle for Iwo Jima in his movies Letters from Iwo Jima. Would it be appropriate to present that history in school with the emotion of just one side. Probably best to present is non-emotively and let the kids discover as they mature how it has affected their lives.

The real question, given what we’ve all seen on here and on other sites in the past few years about the indoctrination of kids in public schools, is this: how many readers of this article are taking the problem seriously enough to pull their kids out and home school? Because if you can read this, and leave your kids in the schools because theirs “isn’t that bad yet,” aren’t you part of the problem?

Unfortunately for him, Communism deteriorated but the damage has definitely been done to USA. They came to our schools, they stocked them with ANTI-AMERICAN information, mis-information, propaganda and they worked their way up to Principals, Colleges and Universities. Shouldn’t our schools be “America ..Land of the Free Schools.?” Communism does not allow Christianity.. it messes with their agenda..it’s all about control..loss of freedom..loss of rights..even the right to be free thinking or free worshiping..loss of property rights, everything shifts from the people to the government..They say in theory that it is good…but only for the government officials.

Orwell was a socialist for a long time, but he became disillusioned and as a result he wrote Animal Farm and 1984. Why do yo think the party in 1984 was named Ingsoc? A hint, it was a shortened English Socialists, kinda Soviet style encoding. .

Also, bot books were verbotten behind Iron Curtain. a possession of a copy (usually samizdat, getting original books in was extra hard) could land you in prison or worse, in Soviet Union that meant gulag — why do you think that was the case if it was, as you claim, about far right government?

I have never been able to figure out why the long list of failures never seems to matter. In the US, they predate the Civil War and the only surviving example might be the Amish culture, but that is a religious community, so that does not count. The urge to be a socialist must start with the seed of narcissism. This would allow all failures to be discounted for the simple reason that the failure only proves that the wrong people were in charge at the time. Another problem or blind spot is that there were many failures precipitated wholly by financial collapse. @ Molotove.. A quick Wikipedia search reveals many interesting stats about Cuba, Michael Moores’ favorite communist utopia. You really should visit it and educate yourself. One eyeopening stat, the average monthly income ranges from $17.00 for a factory worker to 30.00 for a doctor. Some“ high standard of living”!

A few tears ago I spent a week in Moscow teaching our local distributor’s salesmen our technical security products. I had already traveled to a dozen American cites doing the same thing. No part of any American city was a bad as most of Moscow! The place is dirty, broken down, and most people were wearing very old clothes. Except for the Sheraton Hotel restaurant the food was awful. That week was an terrible, but enlightening experience. There is no communist utopia anywhere.

here is a thing i explain to blue-staters first did you know the red-staters are under-bidding you blue staters while you are paying for it
fact is right to work states have buisiness who are using the system to extract blue-state dollars
we are funding your cheap labor
the same thing was done importing jobs to china they under bid manipulate
and people are now fully aware of it soon they will become aware of – the redstate manipulation of tax dollars
then the majority of blue-states will say enough
dollar into the fed “dollar out” – except for national disasators no more free money for redstaters who purposely steal money from blue-states
its theft its the purposely not paying a high enough wage so red-staters dont pay taxes while making blue-states pay for it..
if we did not pay for red-states manipulation of federal dollars we could afford every social program us blue-staters want-
red-staters have been manipulating the system for 30 plus years and still have not created a rich state

MR molitov : Unfortunately, what really happens is that the few CRONIES stick together, scoff up all the goodies and those people who thought they’d “now be able to play on a level field” realized too late that they are in fact SLAVES of the STATE. All of the infra-structure deteriorates because those grabbing the goodies don’t give a damn about the people or the future.
The Capitalism system has been the best. What is wrong with it is corruption. That’s because none of us were paying attention and we were all too happy to let others make decisions. Didn’t work did it? BUT don’t for one minute be fooled by the “ EVERYONE gets a fair share” lie. If you doubt that
take a bag of money with $ 100 dollars in it, put it in the middle of any group and tell them that they need to divide it up so that every person there gets equal amounts.

Brennen’s parents sure wasted their money sending him to a Catholic high school. Please don’t blame the Catholic school. He apparently is a total misfit and so is his wife by association. As far as the school where he is teaching, fire him or pull your kids out of school. Picket the school and flood the school board with protesters. When did schools become unresponsive to the parents? Unfortunately, when you have a job you are less likely to take the day off to picket or you’re too tired to go to the school board meeting in the evening. But there will come a day, and it’s not far in the distant future, when picketing or attending the school board meeting will be too late. This country has been infiltrated with Marxists in all facets of society. Our apathy has cost us dearly.

The language from this so-called educator I find more troubling than as his classroom material although I would challenge this teacher on what communistic country ever succeeded. His posts calling Scott Walker a bastard and worse sounds like it is coming from an uneducated high school dropout who doesn’t know how to articulate an opposing point of view. He is not debating points that support his view that Scott Walker is not making the better choice – instead he is resorting to name calling and vilification. Is this how he is teaching in his classroom? I pity students in his classroom if his posts on Scott Walker and Occupy are typical of how he teaches. He needs to educate himself that those that oppose you are not bastards, they believe in their cause as much as you do, they believe they are doing the right thing as much as you believe they are not. He needs to understand it is the wealthy that invest in this country, that are the job creators. Debate the ideas, debate the consequences but please leave the name calling to the two year olds.

Corporations use them because you and your friends make manufacture in this country so much more expensive than in China. And, no not through fair working conditions and pay but through the taxes and regulations and Union BS. Do you know that these Chinese owned factories all have unions which “encourage” workers to work 18 hour days? Yep and you blame it on the USA how typical.
So tell me just who is at greater fault, the fellow trying to make money or the slave keeper in China and would be slave keeper in the USA (Oh BTW that would be you). “Near as I can tell the factories you speak of are actually Commi owned.”

No, they aren’t. They are owned by foreign corporations who exploit the fact that the “Special Economic Zones” in China are exactly what you’re looking for – areas to do business with almost no regulations, almost no taxes, and almost no established ‘workers rights.‘ That’s right, workers in the SEZs finally have the “freedom” the Tea Party fights for – the freedom to be wage-slaves who have no rights and who essentially live in the factories they work and die in.

“Corporations use them because you and your friends make manufacture in this country so much more expensive than in China. And, no not through fair working conditions and pay but through the taxes and regulations and Union BS.”

Again, for America to compete we’d have to essentially force half the population to work and live in their factories, working 18-hour days because the lack of minimum wage means they make very little per hour. Don’t forget the lack of any safety regulations means the death rate is high, but as you said in another post “workers are expendable.”

“Do you know that these Chinese owned factories all have unions which “encourage” workers to work 18 hour days?”

This is factually untrue. Workers in China work 18-hour days because there AREN’T regulations or protected workers rights. Ignore the name – much of 21st century China is a capitalist paradise.

Okay….,I read Friday’s article. I’ve read this one.
    Did FOX cover this?
I get my T.V. news from FOX. I do not recall any mention of this.

Do these TWITS somehow think “THE BLAZE” is linked to FOX or was there coverage?

I have not caught it on Fox yet. They may very well cover it eventually as they have other stories that I have seen here on The Blaze, but not certain. Did not show up yesterday on Fox & Friends but for the most part the remainder of their shows for Saturday are pre packaged much like the other cable networks. As much as I like the freshness of Fox compared to other news outlets, they still leave a lot to be desired. Haven’t heard Rush touch on this subject either. Hopefully that will be upcoming.

This guy is unfit to teach children.
    Three weeks, no tenure.
Run him out of town, along with his idiot wife.

Fire their sorry azzes. Take your kids out of public school where they have a captive audience to brainwash young people K-12, then do not pay for your children to go to a college where there are leftist liberals and communists heading up classrooms or departments. We owe our children to go to jail if necessary by teaching them ourselves the things that need be. They cannot arrest everyone. Take your kids away from the perverts, socialists, communists, cliques, bullys, sorry azzed teachers and overwhelmed teachers who try but have no support. Take your kids away from trash. We do not owe them our children to practice on and murder their spirit and fill them with hate for their parents and what they have been taught at home and in church. It is worse than sending your child to a beer joint and expecting them to get an education. Some of the liberal teachers have the morals of alley cats and will encourage your child through act or deed or speech to rebel against what is right and decent. They children sometimes spend the rest of their lives getting back on track or even to succeed enough to take care of their own needs. Education is not what it is supposed to be, as it is getting to be indoctrination and getting rid of teachers who do not approve of what is going on. TAKE THE KIDS OUT of public schools and close them all down and put the money to better use.

This is exactly what is behind all of our Occupies and Obama’s anti-rich rhetoric. The International “Comrades” of the world. The Communist Party. Next election seems pretty clear cut. And we know what our Democrat “ comrades” stand for . Republicans need to focus on this distinction.

It’s the union protected bubble called the Teachers Union and the growing number of Marxist leaning teachers in out system. It’s bad enough that these low lifes prowl the campuses of our universities. Now high schcools and next pre schools.

I blame all of this on the Marxist Media that encourages and pushes socialism so they can be the Elitist Class. Power to the Media….No Way. Bring them down to the streets where they belong.

Guess the school district needs to do a better job of ” freedom of wise hiring.”

because thanks to liberal laws and ideals you can’t even fire a teacher accused and in some cases convicted of child molestation, ask NYC about it.

VOX think his expression of opinion is “freedom of thought”. That would be freedom for his line of thought … not for any other.

He imagines he is thinking … like Karl, Mao and Joe …

Sounds like school districts need to examine more than grades and subjects studied. Who hijacked our youth and brainwashed them ? Would love to know where they are getting exposed to all of this sick , hateful, anti-capitalism indoctrination.
