Is This the Reason Obama Said ‘No’ to the Keystone Pipeline?

In rejecting the Keystone XL pipeline project this past week, the Obama administration did exactly what they told everyone they were going to do.

The question many are asking is, “Why?”

Why did the President kill the pipeline deal that so many Democrats, Republicans and labor union leaders support?

Was it done because:

A. – As the administration has said publicly, there is not enough time to do a proper environmental impact study?

B. – Thanks to alternative energy companies like Solyndra, we’re on the path to becoming an oil-free energy generating country?

C. – Billionaire Warren Buffett (and Obama advisor) has an investment in a Canadian railway that would benefit from killing Keystone?

D. – Is it because Brazil, the country whose deep-water oil fields we agreed to fund, is going to be selling us cheap and plentiful oil?

In the case of the environmental impact study argument, it has been noted that the project could begin moving forward and jobs be created as another study commenced. If the findings show that the pipeline’s route needed to be changed, or additional safety measures put in place, those could easily be added to the project.

The Solyndra question answers itself.

Concerning the Warren Buffett investment, Bloomberg News reports:

Warren Buffett’s Burlington Northern Santa Fe LLC is among U.S. and Canadian railroads that stand to benefit from the Obama administration’s decision to reject TransCanada Corp. (TRP)’s Keystone XL oil pipeline permit.

But what about Brazil? Was the real reason that President Obama rejected the Keystone XL deal because he was expecting Brazil to start selling us some of the cheap oil from their newly-discovered oil deep water oil fields. Estimates of the underwater fields could make Brazil an energy superpower and a very wealthy nation.

In May of 2011, President Obama visited Brazil and pledged massive financial support from America in the amount of $2 billion dollars. Obama also hinted that the money being lent to Brazil should also put America at the front of the line once the oil starts pumping.

The President‘s wishful thinking seems to have been undercut by China’s forceful negotiating.

Last week it was announced that Brazil and China had inked a deal for oil sales, big oil sales.

Additionally, in the wake of the Keystone XL rejection, Canada‘s Prime Minister has talked about building a pipeline to his country’s west coast where oil could easily be pumped into tankers waiting to take the oil to China:

Prime Minister Stephen Harper, in a telephone call yesterday, told Obama “Canada will continue to work to diversify its energy exports.”

If you wonder what the Prime Minster means when he says “diversify its energy exports“, he is apparently talking about China. The Bloomberg News report continues:

Canada this month began hearings on a proposed pipeline by Enbridge Inc. to move crude from Alberta’s oil sands to British Columbia’s coast, where it could be shipped to Asian markets.

As the Iranians inch closer to realizing their threat to block the transport of oil through the Strait of Hormuz and the EU has voted to ban oil imports from Iran, the importance of oil from South American oil is obvious.

Some might argue that the oil underneath American soil and American waters would bring great independence and security.

So why did Obama block Keystone? Is it one of the above? What’s your opinion?

No the correct answer is three parts.
    1. Didn‘t want to piss off the environment wackos’
    2. Delayed as long as possible to try and not piss off the unions.
    3. Wants to destroy the carbon fuel industries in the U.S. and make us a third world nation. Energy is the king maker.

Our percentage of foreign oil usage in 2011 was 49% Lowest in 58 years. We exported more fossil fuels than we imported for the first time ever. Percentage of buildings using some alternative energy highest ever. Why would anyone want to listen to the “drill baby drill” crowd. If Exxon Mobile could have pumped out another 100 billion barrels of American crude last year they would have exported it at 90 dollars a barrel. Republican energy philosophy benefits big oil and big oil only. Exxon would love for joe sixpack to believe drilling on our beaches will save him a quarter a gallon at the pump. For American production to reduce American gas prices we would have to produce enough oil to significantly raise the world’s supply. And at that point the price would drop equally around the globe not just in the USA. A barrel of crude drawn in Denton, Texas has as much or better chance ending up gasoline in Beijing as it does in Houston. It’s a world market and Exxon is not in it for America, but for Exxon. And if you don’t undestand that, well, Exxon thanks you for your lack of formal education. The oil companies know they can count on dimwits like Palin to make there drilling sound patriotic. Read a book, take a class, turn off the television.

This makes no sense. Take coal for instance. The Environmentalists want to stop its burning. Yet, they’re fine with loading it on trucks and trains and dragging it to our ports. Loading it up on foreign branded barges and have it limp and spew its way to China. It’s then unloaded again by truck and train and burned with no regard for the atmosphere.

You would think the banning of the export of coal would be their top priority. No. Their priority is to destroy our way of life.

If it was trucked or boated into the country, I would agree with you.

But because the method of delivery requires property to lay across the border, and because what we could do to the pipe anywhere within our border could potentially affect property within their border, it means they would be able to tell us what to do with the pipe in our own country. That’s the violation of national sovereignty.

I’m all for global trade, if it respects national sovereignty. Global trade is fantastic; Read “I, Pencil”, right? This also means that I oppose multi-national companies, because it presumes that a citizen of one country can own property in another country – another obvious violation of national sovereignty (or at least should be).

re : we exported more fuel than we imported last year…
      ****
The reason we exported so much fuel last year is that Americans are using less fuel than ever before. Normally when the price reaches a certain level, American’s cut back on everything, which causes the market to go down because there’s more fuel on the market. Last year, American’s cut back and instead of letting the price drop, someone made the decision to export the difference and artificially keep the price up. THE PRICE OF FUEL IMPACTS EVERYTHING IN OUR ECONOMY! IT’S THE REASON THE PRICE OF FOOD, AND ALL GOODS ARE HIGHER! (There’s a surcharge on everything because of the high cost to transport!) Because of this adding to the cost of production, American manufacturers have another impediment to competing with imports for the American markets and workers see their jobs move out of country! LOWER THE COST OF FUEL, LOWER TAXES, CUT UNNECESSARY REGULATION AND YOU‘LL SEE OUR ECONOMY BOOM AND WE WON’T NEED THE HIGH TAXES BECAUSE THE MONEY GOING INTO THE TREASURY WILL SURGE! IT WAS PROVEN BY BOTH KENNEDY AND REAGAN AND WILL BE PROVEN AGAIN WITH A REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT!

I don’t know what you are talking about by “third party” unless someone decides to enter the field via third party. Gingrich is smart and can think on his feet, unlike Obama. I am hoping more people see that. He doesn’t bow to foreign dictators, nor hate Israel. A lot of independents (and Democrats) have seen the light of Obama and will not be voting for him.

It was apparent before, but it became indisputably certain that the Repubs and Dems are, in actuality, one snake with two heads after the House of Reps. voted with 30% to pass the NDAA. It is just as evident that the cards are being stacked by the two-headed snake to give obam a second term… simply by giving Americans the same alternatives they previously and rightly rejected. After all, it worked perfectly last time around with Rhino McCain as the alternative. Did Mittens suddenly become less artificial, and more likeable? Did Newty suddenly become trustworthy and honorable? Does Ron Paul suddenly have a real shot at it? Without a clear Republican favorite nominee, the final vote count will be easily manipulated with the coordinated charade and will appear to legitimately re-elect obam and no will be in an adequately qualified position to challenge the lack the fraudulent vote count. Josef Stalin, “It’s not the vote that counts, but who counts the vote.”

Obama may have made the right decision for the wrong reason. Maybe the whole idea of the XL (the current Ksystone goes down to about St. Louis – Wood River, IL) was to grab land or sell pipe. MN, IL, IN, MI, OH refineries process about 2M barrels/day of crude. There is no significant source of crude anywhere near by – so all their crude is pumped from the Gulf. Why not replace their Gulf supplied crude with Canadian? AND use the pipelines to the gulf to ship the excess south ??? Makes too much sense. The MN and IN refineries are already set up for tar sand crude. (Any refinery requires mods to process it.)

This article answered a major question for me, which I have been thinking about for several years. So warren Buffet has a large financial interest in rail. Well, the local sawmills have had the loggers around me mowing down hardwoods for 2 or 3 years now, for rail ties. They in turn are sending them to WI for pressure treating, which they are replacing tens of thousands of ties around the country with. The old arsenic treated ties are returning to a local power plant which now grinds them and burns them. This entire cycle is taxpayer funded, to a large degree, in the name of green energy. Something about increasing, by law, the percentage of mandated ‘green’ produced electricity, over coal and NG. My angle on this is that in the last couple of years, my residential electric monthly bill has doubled, and the ‘fuel yard’ where they grind the ties releases tons and tons of old creosote dust lies less than 500 feet from Lake Superior, I’m sure the fish supplies soon will be thoroughly contaminated by spring and stormwater runoff. Governments idea of smart tax expenditures. It sure benefits railroad owners and future toxic waste site remediators, as well as the shareholders of inte***s. It’s a big lake, but it still has an ecostructure worth considering… Meanwhile, the power companies are selling off the 2 or 3 local hydro electric powerdams, to private, wealthy landbuyers. Not enough sticky fingers out there collecting the money off of them, for their electricity, I gue

I believe Obama is trying to bring about a “more equitable world” by choking off our supplies of oil and thus our ability to create wealth and compete. He is being a “good global citizen” by trying to level out wealth across the globe. What he is not doing at all is looking out for America or what she stands for. He is helping to strengthen regimes that have a very different vision of the future than we do. China does not care much about human rights at home or across the globe. I’ve often wondered… if we decided to toss aside our federal government entirely, would it not be better? Our local governments tend to get a lot more accomplished for their localities than the Federal level ever can and that federal government spends way more than all the states combined.

Trash the federation and make one large state focusing on municipalities and counties, still have states and a nation, along with a senate and supreme court………….. no federal anything though :) No need for a central bank, the states can agree on a scrip design and each state can control the amount needed within its own borders to facilitate trade (that’s already done in all the federal reserve districts for each district anyhow by private banks, might as well let the states control it).

Anyhow, that’s the thought – it could go somewhere beneficial I think (and dangerous I’m sure, too).

Why bring it up? Well, back in the mid 1800′s Washington DC was made the first federal state… with the Patriot Act and the NDAA… all the rest of the 50 states became federal states.

This cannot continue and has to stop, hence, would it not be better to toss the federation aside for commonwealth… a confederacy… something different?
