Is the State Dept. Scolding This Ambassador for Being Too Religious?

Is the State Dept. Scolding This Ambassador for Being Too Religious?

U.S. Ambassador to Malta Douglas Kmiec.

Can you be a State Department employee that’s too religious? According to a new report by the department, and the person targeted by it, that may be the case.

The U.S. Ambassador to Malta is on the defensive this week after an internal government audit rebuked him for spending too much time writing and speaking about subjects such as abortion and his religious beliefs, and neglecting his duties as ambassador.

The 41-page report released Thursday by the State Department’s inspector general accuses outspoken Catholic Ambassador Douglas Kmiec of spending too much time on “outside activities” that “have detracted from his attention to core mission goals” in the Mediterranean island nation, such as promoting maritime security and American business. It acknowledges the wide respect for Kmiec in the conservative, Roman Catholic country of Malta, but notes that his articles distract him and his embassy officials by forcing them to carefully review his writing. They’ve upset administration officials in Washington too.

The audit goes on to say: “The ambassador should focus on embassy priorities and refrain from outside activities, including writing and speaking engagements that do not pertain directly to strengthening maritime security, promoting U.S. trade and investment and other mission goals.”

It adds Kmiec’s “unconventional approach” to being ambassador has upset State Department officials, “especially over his reluctance to accept their guidance and instructions.” The ambassador has rebuffed their suggestions because he believes he was given a special mandate to promote Obama’s interfaith initiatives, even as embassy staff must “spend an inordinate amount of time reviewing his writings, speeches and other initiatives.”

While the report accuses Kmiec of spending an average of “several hours of each work day … devoted to his nonofficial writings,” it doesn’t cite any particular comments from him.

Kmiec, 59, a lawyer in President Ronald Reagan’s administration, is not a stranger to controversy. His support of Obama has made him a target of conservative Catholics. In the past, he has even been denied Communion by one priest. According to First Things, he was heavily criticized in 2008 for saying, “I do not understand Senator Obama to be pro-abortion.”

On Friday, Kmiec responded to the criticism by saying he was being targeted because of his expressions of faith.

“I must say that I am troubled and saddened that a handful of individuals within my department in Washington seem to manifest a hostility to expressions of faith and efforts to promote better interfaith understanding,” Kmiec said in an e-mailed statement to The Associated Press. “Our constitution proudly protects the free exercise of religion — even for ambassadors.”

Kmiec said the criticism of his outspoken religious views was “especially odd” because his friendship with Obama began out of a common view that “too much of politics had been used to divide us, sometimes by excluding people of faith.”

But not everyone is buying that Kmiec is being targeted because of his faith. Jack Smith of the Catholic Key blog took exception to the Associated Press’s coverage (which contributed to this article) of the story.

“The AP gives the impression that Kmiec is being rebuked for a forthright presentation of his ‘pro-life’ views, when he was doing nothing of the sort,” Smith writes. “I don’t think the president is at all upset with the way Ambassador Kmiec has presented his views on abortion; it’s why Kmiec got the appointment in the first place.”

Instead, Smith says it could be honest criticism about someone who is not fulfilling his duties and instead is being an Obama cheerleader.

But he also offers another theory: Maybe, just maybe, Hillary Clinton is considering a presidential run, and she doesn’t want Kmiec “campaigning” for Obama.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

    The article denotes he complaint is how much time he is spending on writing ala christian issues. HE’S NOT SPENDING HIS TIME DOING AMBASSADORIAL WORK – that’s the issue. If worked in the private sector and spent too much company time on non-work issues- he’d be fired. Sounds like this boy needs to tend to what he’s paid to do – and work on the rest on his time – not t he public dime.

      Exactly… it’s astounding how that article spins a very reasonable problem with his behavior to feed the Christian persecution complex. If he was doing coke and playing pool instead of doing the job WE PAY HIM TO DO, would that be okay? Why should writing Christian papers get a break?

      That is the claim…what is the evidence?
      It would seem that one would have to be missing meetings..not doing scheduled “rah rah glad-handing” or putting down ones own country (I‘m lookin’ at you libs) etc, for ANY accusation to be made.
      Would the same type of complaints against supporting progressive liberal activities while being an Ambassador be focused on? I‘m gonna guess ’no’.

    The Chinese communist flag is allowed at the white house;
    The big shot leader of the union that is threatening major violence and anarchy, who visits the White House several times a week, is a good friend of the leader of the communist party, and also a good friend of our President;
    The President was guided and taught by a major racist “church leader”;
    A former union “quasi” thug says that he has a plan to bring this country down, and he blatantly spells it out on tape;
    Our armed forces are in a world-wide battle for their lives while our leader goes on vacation, loses the pick for the final four, eats ice cream while his wife chastises Americans for what they eat; etc., etc., etc.
    The American economy is in shambles from the borrowing and giving American funds to foreign governments.

    And OUR STATE DEPARTMENT, thus this administration, is concerned that our Ambasador is TOO RELIGIOUS?

    GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!! IT’S OUT OF CONTROL!!!

    SCALZO. Since when is standing publicly unabashadly and unashamedly for ones beliefs tantamount to making imposition of those beliefs upon others? If you disagree with what I or anyone else has to say that Sir is your perogative. However, if I want to speak out loud about it that is my perogative and anyone else’s in a free society. You are certianly free to ignore everything we have to say and ridicule us for it as well but to silence us; never. When the tables turn and respectful Constitionally guided candidates are elected to the Senate and Exective Office, I hope we pursue the communist/socialist/terrorist in all the rat holes in the USA. It will be most important that all the instigators be prosocuted to the full extent of the law for their treason. And then, ground into the earth all the Soros funded groups and paid off MEDIA. The Federal Reserve needs to be ripped open to the light of day, to every nasty little corner of corruption. Well, you get my drift.

    Yes – I really think Hillary is/has been planning for a long time about this. She and Bill were furious with Obama when he won – taking her “deserved” win. So they’ve been watching and waiting,…..always planning strategies, etc. One way or another, think she’ll be running in 2012. The tide has turned against Obama — think Soros doesn’t think “he’s the one” now to continue getting their agenda done. Think that‘s why we’ll probably be having a woman either to run as President or VP (Bachmann or Palin) in order to go against a woman. Glenn was pushing Allen West and Bachmann today. Interesting, rough times ahead…………….“Battle Hymn of the Republic” !!!!!!!!!!

    We talk incessantly here about needing to have a better understanding of the muslim faith through mosque being built all over this country and at ground zero, we talk about having muslim sitcoms to draw people into the false belief that muslims are just like us….if they are just like us OBTW, then they wouldn’t be faithful muslims. Now if we had a muslim State dept employee doing the same thing we would not even hear a peep about it. But because he is a Christian and spreading the knowledge of his faith then we have a problem don’t we. We have a problem because this is not the agenda of our State dept, they are to promote onloy our secular values which grew out of our Christian Faith. Shame on the State Dept.

      SgtCrusty! Of course I can answer that! The age old challenge to us atheists.
      It’s inbred in us from the cave man days. A desire, nay, need to look out for each other. To care for each other. We wouldn’t have survived as a species without it.

      Now what about all the horrible things that have been done in the name of god? Using god as a justification? But my real challenge to you is the following:

      Say tomorrow god is proven to not exist. What would YOU do? Would you then think it was okay to kill, steal or rape? Would that shackle finally be off so you could do what you please…?

      I think not.

      And what did people do before Moses supposedly came down with the commandments. Did they think it was okay to do all that stuff? Like I said before, we would never have made it if that was the case. And why no mention of rape or incest? No mention of the mistreatment of children…Why are the first three all about honoring god? Seems a tad narcissitic, no? Is god that petty?

      What this man does on his own time in regards to faith is just that, between him and the Almighty.

      Something Beck said on his radio show today just made things click:

      He commented again on Hillary running for POTUS in 2012.

      Most people discount this laughingly, yet think on this when linked with the progressives and what Van Jones said about “pressure – top down, bottom up, inside out.”

      Obama is used to generate the pressure and emergencies, to discredit the nation around the world, and cause as much chaos as possible. Conditions in the country with the national debt, lack of jobs, financial terrorists and extremists groups and unions on the rampage, along with ever encroaching government; people begin to cry out for the madness to stop, and in 2012 Hillary shows in her way the path to save the nation while actually finishing the nightmare begun by Obama.

      This is like the palestinians of the Gaza Strip calling for the US to impose a no-fly zone to keep the IDF at bay; just as has been done in Libya and so a precident has been set.

      Old Spooky Dude is playing a greater game than many think is possible.

      Just wait and watch, and pray, for only the intervention of the Almighty will save this nation and the nation of Israel.

      You also have the right to write a book and give speeches in opposition to his beliefs. Our Constitution gives YOU the right to do so. He wasn’t imposing his beliefs of anyone. He wasn’t coercing, by force, his position (A far cry from what the Islamists do) on his listeners or readers.

      Of course, with our Muslim in Chief in charge, he will be villified and demoted if not relieved of his ambassadorship.

      I am a faithful Catholic who always strives to conform my life and conscience to what the Lord teaches. As such I will say with firm conviction that one cannot claim to be authentically Catholic and support Obama. Kmiec did much to confuse many Catholics in 2008. I cannot support or defend him now.

      Personally I don‘t think I need to hear about someone’s religious beliefs. What they are is that individuals personal business. I‘m curious how you’re jobs would feel if your personal beliefs were interfering with your work? Especially if your vocal about positions that can be divisive. And your job is about promoting unity and understanding. If you‘ve chosen a vocation that doesn’t lend itself to being outspoken about certain things, then either keep your mouth shut, or find a different job.

      Easy Piezy, lemon squeezy. Just do your job. I don’t need to hear about your beliefs.

      That’s a great old hymn. Please allow me to make one small correction. The last line of the chorus should read “Till every foe is VANQUISHED and Christ is Lord indeed”. Be sure of one thing. That when all is said and done God’s enemies will not only be conquered but they will be throughly and totally VANQUISHED!

He does have the confidence of the community he is the ambassador of so that tells me that his actions are sound in promoting strength and confidence in the USA. If, he was not liked nor trusted by the community than I would make an issue! Stating one’s beliefs and imposing them is the same thing with this administration. They like to think that their word is law, and we are all supposed to abide by whatever they say. I would be more concerned with a Catholic supporting Obama’s viewpoints, considering that Obama is vehemently pro-abortion.

      What’s wrong with mentioning God? Nothing! Even the 2faced Obama invokes God when he trys to make points with we Christians. Otherwise you can tell a man by what he says & does and I know while in Chicago he voted to allow late term abortions, which means killing the baby with scissors in the neck, or powerful chemicals to abort it and let it die on its own, tossed into the trash. Malta is Catholic.This man should fit in if he hasn’t gone down the road of liberation theology.Main article: Archdiocese of Malta is there and According to tradition, Publius, the Roman Governor of Malta at the time of Saint Paul’s shipwreck, became the first Bishop of Malta following his conversion to Christianity. After ruling the Maltese Church for thirty-one years, Publius was transferred to the See of Athens in 90 AD, where he was martyred in 125 AD. There is scant information about the continuity of Christianity in Malta in subsequent years, although tradition has it that there was a continuous line of bishops from the days of St. Paul to the time of Emperor Constantine.
