Is Upton Walking Back His Support for Light Bulb Ban?

Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., is just one of many Republicans vying to take over the chairmanship of the Energy and Commerce Committee when the GOP reclaims the majority in the House of Representatives in January. However, many outspoken conservatives have recently come out in opposition to Upton’s bid, citing his controversial support for a ban on incandescent light bulbs as just one of many objectionable positions the Michigan Republican has taken contrary to conservatives’ traditional limited government mantra.
But now, faced with growing criticism and mounting opposition to a possible chairmanship, Upton is hinting that he may be flipping the switch on his own incandescent bulb ban. The Washington Times reports:
Three years after he led the charge to require consumers to ditch their comfortable old incandescent lights in favor of those twisty CFL bulbs, Rep. Fred Upton now wants to be the man to help undo that law as the next chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. …
“We have heard the grass roots loud and clear, and will have a hearing early next Congress,” said Mr. Upton, a Michigan Republican who is facing several others in his party in a bid to earn the gavel of the powerful committee. “The last thing we wanted to do was infringe upon personal liberties – and this has been a good lesson that Congress does not always know best.”
Upton is facing pressure from conservative bloggers, tea partiers and conservative organizations, including FreedomWorks who has launched the “Down With Upton” campaign. At press time, more than 35,000 individuals had signed a petition urging the House Republican Steering Committee to oppose Upton’s bid for chairman.
A Steering Committee vote is scheduled for Tuesday to decide who will chair the various committees in the upcoming 112th Congress.
Is Upton’s apparent backtrack on the light bulb ban the mark of a commanding leader listening to his grassroots constituents, or is it a symptom of a weak-kneed legislator who leans according to political winds? What do you think?

I just don’t trust the guy, he would have a hearing and then continue with the ban. Just like the dems do. Are we going to fall for this kind on nonsense anymore. Wen have to hold them up to their commitments and positions. They should think twice and thrice before taking a position and that way they will never have to back track. This ban was bad form the begining and now it should cost him the chair/gavel as the case maybe. Hold him accountable I say!

Posted on December 7, 2010 at 12:10amOne of the facilities in our town replaced their lightbulbs in the auditorium with the cfs. What a nightmare. Previously, changing a bulb involved a long handled, telescoping rod with something that looked like a rubber plunger on the end of it. A bulb could be changed by one person in a relatively short period of time.
The new bulbs required adaptors and entailed bringing in a small two man lift to get up there to do it. Once they were all replaced, everyone was thrilled. They wouldn’t have to change another light bulb for years. Two weeks later, the first one blew. A week and a half later, a second one. By the end of the first month, four of the bulbs were out. They had to rent the lift again and guess what happened when they were taking out one of the “long lasting bulbs”? When they finally could get back into the auditorium, it was decided that they would simply take out the “new, improved” bulbs and replace them with the old type simply because they had already spent more money than they would have saved in the first three years. Ya gotta admire the ingenuity, In a mere sixty days, these super efficient new bulbs cost the city more than it had spent in the three previous years. Now, how efficient is that?

They should have used LED’s a bit more expensive, but will last a LOT longer.
The Incandescent bulb may have a few places left to use, but in general you are wasting money with them if you pay the electric bill.

Posted on December 6, 2010 at 11:13pmOne thing the people of America do understand is that when Congress starts to meddle in things, the results will almost always be expensive, tick everyone off, and be as effective as a roomful of wet and moldy rugs hung over a dining room in which a formal affair of state is being held.
Actually having the congress meet in such a place may not be a bad idea.

I also feel your own wealth should be taken and given to the 1000s that have lost their jobs over this. That would be the only form of wealth redistribution I would be for!
