Is Your 3-Year-Old a Gambler?

E-Trade might sell its products using the quaint concept of an infant playing the stock market, but according to a new study, it might be that children not that much older than infants can easily be pre-identified as the type of child to play the slots. In fact, it only takes three years for the pattern to form.

Business Insider caught the news of this interesting study on childhood development:

University of Missouri’s Wendy Slutske and colleagues used data from a 30-year long study observing 939 individuals. Using 22 behavioral descriptors, the participating toddlers were separated into five temperament groups: undercontrolled (10.4%), inhibited (7.8%), confident (27.5%), reserved (14.8%), and well-adjusted (39.6%).

The children with undercontrolled temperament were more than twice as likely to gamble when 21 and 32 than other groups. These potential gamblers were described as restless, willful, impulsive, emotionally labile, impersistent, having fleeting attention, having expressed negativism, and withdrawing from tasks.

The report reasoned: “Perhaps it is the combination of impulsivity (or risk taking) in conjunction with the tendency toward negative emotions, such as anger, hostility, and anxiety, that constitutes the personality vulnerability for disordered gambling.”

Got that? It‘s not just the Terrible Two’s. In fact, it’s more likely to be the Terrible Snake Eyes.

The study also includes a graph that maps the correlation between angry or impulsive children and gambling addicted adults. See what you make of it here:

Children as Young as 3 Who Show Aggressive or Impulsive Traits May be Future Gamblers, According to New Study From University of Missouri

This is a very interesting study! However; I think there are many other factors that could come into play. A child’s environment and exposure to certain per-determining factors can also come into play. The traits used to describe the potential gamblers are the same one that would be found in children who don’t have appropriate attachment. People make light of gambling, but it is a serious issue. Obviously good parenting would have an impact on a wide variety of adult behaviors. Want to minimize or prevent those behaviors that could be detrimental? Be a good parent!

And you ask yourself. Why are we going broke as a nation? Because some democrat legislator decided this was important to fund, for the good of mankind, and a 10% kickback to their hidden account.

Does jr. know when to hold ‘em, and when to fold ‘em, when to walk and runaway, and not count his money sittin’ at the table, as there‘ll be time enough for countin’, when the dealin’s done.

My 3 year old quit gambling…and he’s down to 3 packs a day. We’re very proud of him.

From my observations… over a long period of time… Women gambol more and take more risks than do men.

“Gambol” – “to run or jump about playfully”. Just like any other 3 year old.

When I enrolled my child in public school I was stunned to find that not only do the teachers pay the kids for good grades and behavior with candy, but they let them earn slips of paper for the same and let them gamble with them. They even have a big spin each month. I forbid my child to participate so they let her be the spinner. I begged them to take the candy away, all the teachers were very large, and ended up pulling my child out on gambling day. I believe the reason they teach the kids to gamble is because schools in CA depend on money from state gambling. How sad.

Didn’t bother to read this story, at least not yet, but the cover photo is of an 8 or 9 month old baby sitting in a chair. They couldn’t do better than that when the headline reads “3 year old” ???
    LOL

Already knew this. I caught a gang of toddlers down at the black jack tables hitting on 15 when the dealer was showing a 6. Come on parents teach your kids how to gamble right.
