Islamic Leaders in Pakistan Call U.S. Embassy-Sponsored Gay Rights Meeting ‘Cultural Terrorism’

Islamic Leaders in Pakistan Call U.S. Embassy Sponsored Gay Rights Meeting Cultural TerrorismISLAMABAD (The Blaze/AP) — A group of conservative Islamic political and religious officials has condemned a meeting by the U.S. Embassy supporting gay rights in Pakistan as “cultural terrorism” against the country.

The group, which included the head of Pakistan’s largest Islamic party, Jamaat-e-Islami, claimed the meeting — the first of its kind held by the embassy — was the second most dangerous attack by the U.S. against Pakistan, following missiles fired from unmanned drones.

The meeting on June 26 was hosted by the U.S. deputy ambassador, Richard Hoagland, and was meant to support the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals in Pakistan, said the embassy.

“Such people are the curse of society and social garbage,” said the statement issued by the Islamic officials on Sunday. “They don’t deserve to be Muslim or Pakistani, and the support and protection announced by the U.S. administration for them is the worst social and cultural terrorism against Pakistan.”

Earlier today, AFP reports that there were rallies and protests that were held to denounce the U.S.-led meeting:

Islamists held rallies in major Pakistani cities Monday to denounce a gay rights event hosted last month by the United States embassy, calling for a “holy war” against ally Washington.

Around 100 demonstrators in the southern port city of Karachi protested, calling the meeting “an assault on Pakistan’s Islamic culture”, while there were similar demonstrations in the capital Islamabad and in Lahore…

In the eastern city of Lahore, some 150 students from IJT and about two dozen activists of pro-Taliban Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam also held anti-US rallies, police and witnesses said.

Homosexual acts are illegal in Pakistan. Homosexuality is not explicitly mentioned in Pakistan’s penal code, but “carnal intercourse against the order of nature” is punishable by a fine and/or imprisonment for a period of two years to life, according to the United Nations.

Also, under Islamic, or Sharia, laws in Pakistan, homosexual acts are punishable by whipping, imprisonment or death, according to the U.N.

Hoagland, the deputy ambassador, said during the meeting that the U.S. would support LGBT rights in Pakistan.

“I want to be clear: the U.S. Embassy is here to support you and stand by your side every step of the way,” said Hoagland in a statement released by the embassy.

Over 75 people attended the meeting, which was co-hosted by the Gays and Lesbians in Foreign Affairs Agencies, the embassy said. The crowd included U.S. Embassy officials, military representatives, foreign diplomats and leaders of Pakistani LGBT advocacy groups.

The Islamic officials demanded the Pakistani government arrest the participants under the country’s laws and said the meeting was “tantamount to stabbing the Muslim world in the chest.”

All I can say is what the heck is wrong with Richard Hoagland? Who is he to say that the USA would support LGBT rights in Pakistan? What was he thinking? Their culture is not ready for this. To be quite frank, neither is ours (even though Hollywood & the NEA, & the ACLU believe we should be). But at least we don’t beat or kill people because they are homosexuals.

If Islam hates homosexuality why is it a tradition for adult males to have young boys as sex slaves? Does male on male pedophilia not count in the eyes of Mohammad the pedophile prophet?

I alway hear from Muslim leaders hat Islam is a peaceful religion. However when they use Sharia Law and rule of lew of the land, it doesn’t sound very pieceful when they impose lenghthy prison sentences or the death penalty on homosexuals.

Hey guys, whether pro- or anti-gay (both misinformed, in my opinion), the U.S. Embassy has NO BUSINESS promoting gay rights in a foreign land! It is NOT the purview of our government to take such a position! If you want gay rights in Pakistan, form a mission, raise funds, get a passport–AND a visa, and trot your ass over there to stick your nose in somebody else’s business!!! Sheesh–I‘ll bet they sent their flag from the Richmond Fed’s Office Building over to the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad for the occasion! Dammit–quit using OUR government to push YOUR AGENDA!!!

    Dear Mr/Ms? Baikonur,
I believe that God‘s law trumps men’s. That said I do not hate anyone, cannot do so without commiting sin. The answer is simple , love the sinner, hate the sin. I wish no one to die for their “lifestyle” as they choose to call it, it is between them and God.

do ya think the folks in the middle east know that liberal culture will destroy their culture? what will the folks in the middle east do to shut off the 24/7 attack of liberal culture? maybe the problem is more about liberal culture than “government policy”.

If these are the tactics the US is using, (get people to come out of the closet so they can be stoned and killed) you’d think State would start with the enemies instead of the Allies (?) You will note they did not list the menu of this well-thought-out brain storm–With their brillance, it probably included Pork Rinds!! What an embarrassment this whole administration is!!!!

Unfortunately, many of our embassies are populated with folks who have a godlike view of themselves. It comes partly from their protected status in the host country and partly from liberal feedback on most issues from their peers. We need a general housecleaning among tenured embassy staffs around the world and have absolutely no right to use this “Trojan Horse” approach to force an unacceptable agenda.

The progressives of this country are NOT going to convince the Islamic countries, The American Black race, the New Black Panther Party, Farrakahn or any of the South American Catholic countries to embrace LGBT….they will lose on this enveloped LGBTl policy of theirs and Barack Obama will lose this election because of the same and his dumb economic policies! This globe is just not ready for homosexuals.

So, the moment of truth, Blazers: Do you side with Islamic fundamentalists who believe as you do, that homosexuality is a grave sin in the eyes of God and that such an event is truly an insult to a religious culture, or will you side with the US embassy against the Muslim Talibanish hordes, even if that means rejecting your recently (and very strongly) stated hatred of all things homosexual?

@BAIKUNOR – Disapproving of a behavior is quite different from hating one who engages in such behavior. Surely you don’t hate fat people for their overeating, do you? Likewise I deplore the behavior of of my homosexual relatives, but I love them for their other attributes.

Actually, I think we need to mind our own business. Telling other countries what rights they should give their citizens is like Muslim countries telling us we should allow our children to marry at age 10. Their women, other religions, and the poor have little if any true rights…their military play both sides against the middle, they threaten with nuclear weapons, and we throw more coal on the fire. Smart. Real smart.

WHY do you have to paint everyone who is NOT FOR your position in an EXTREME way, in order to make your point? Maybe your point isn’t worth THAT MUCH discussion! I couldn’t care less what your sexual persuasion is, but I do care when a small segment of our society hijacks OUR government to PUSH THEIR AGENDA!!! We have no more business taking a gay rights stand in Pakistan than the man in the moon! Now, if THEY take THEIR beliefs and force them upon OUR society, WE wouldn’t be particularly thrilled with it! If you want to do mission work in Pakistan, help yourself–but LEAVE OUR GOVERNMENT OUT OF IT!
