Islamic Seminary Issues Fatwa on…Birthdays?

Considered one of the Islamic world’s leading seminaries, “Darul Uloom Deoband” has informed Muslims around the world that a fatwa has been issued against celebrating birthdays as doing so is allegedly against shariah law. According to the Indian seminary’s vice chancellor, birthdays are also only a “tradition of Western countries.”
“Muslims should not follow the tradition of Western culture of celebrating birthdays as it against the Sharia,” said, Maulana Abul Kasim Naumani.
Naumani added that Islamic seminary does not even celebrate their prophet Muhammed’s birthday.
Asia News adds:
Responding to a query of a student, the fatwa department of the country’s biggest Islamic seminary said that Islam does not permit such celebrations as they are against the Sharia. The query was made in reference to the birthday celebration of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, the founder of the Aligarh Muslim University.
Deobandi (literally of the city of Deoband) is a Muslim religious movement present in the Indian subcontinent and Afghanistan that follows the Hanafi legal school (madhhab).
Their main institution is a seminary in the Indian city of Deoband, in Sahāranpur District (Uttar Pradesh), about 140 km northeast of Delhi.
It hosts up to 1,500 students and its library is endowed with some 70,000 traditional legal books, prints and manuscripts
Not even innocent birthday celebrations are beyond the reproach of Islamic clerics. What will be next?

Posted on November 8, 2011 at 7:23amI would like to compliment Ninas2 for the stunning array of vocabulary words, like ignorant and…. ignorant.. In one of the posts you had a valid point (birthdays are way overdone and bastardized in the west), followed by immediate revocation by your ranting insults. Those same rants devalue your opinion with others. Is there “ignorance” of Islam in the west? yes. Is there a vile hatred for christianity in the middle east? yes again.
EXAMPLE: OWS has a point in the non-capitalistic way we bailed out banks; however, on the other hand they were destroying innocent businesses, raping and yelling, abusing their kids as doorstops, etc..
At this point, who cares if they have a what they say.
I guess beating a drum or a bum is more fun than contacting your congressman or voting. In my experience people who say “peace and love” tend to be the most selfish and disrespectful people of all, except for those who just attack people to change their point of view. Like calling them racist, or ignorant, or something else in that veign.

All great works of literature and history are open to interpretation, ELIAS. One’s interpretations typically draw on the basic personality of the reader as well as aspects of experience. Better yet, the same written words, that have not changed, can mean much different things a little later in life. If this was not true, then we would all make the exact same movie ground up as every other director who read the original book. Same visual ques. Same soundtrack. Same attire. Same camera angles.

Posted on November 8, 2011 at 7:42am@NINAS2 Althogh I admire your loyaly and dedication to whom you believe to be God…there was never an Allah..Mohamad’s wife was tight with a pope from the era in which Mohamad came to be. Through her and her cousin Waraqyauh..he devised a plan to raise up a mighty army in your people for the taking of Jerusalem for the vatican city. THe pope required 3 things from Islam which he created..to kill all Christians and Jews..protect the Augustinian Monks and Roman Catholics and to take Jerusalem for him. They did all but hand over Jerusalem. They instead switched out the story of Ismael and Issac and built the Dome of the Rock there. Then Islam wanted Europe..the Pope refused because he considered Islam heathens.(a false religion) so he raised up an army of his own.. and thus the Crusades…Millions of protestant Christians were killed and millions of Bibles were burned to prevent his own people and Islam from reading them and Christians telling them the truth. THat lasted 2000 years. Because of the loss of his daughter,,Mohamed considered his daughter that he lost in the same league with Mary…the mother of Jesus..There was something about that Lady of Fatima..anyway Mohamed..by the end of his life hoped that his people would recognize the divinity of Jesus *Yeshua” because of His immaculate conception and virgin birth.. Even in history..it is said that Mohammad didn’t want to be known as a prophet..but his wife insisted, and now you know why..

Posted on November 8, 2011 at 6:20amOnce again, your reports are biased and unfounded. Before you report, take a deeper look into the story before you mislead the ignorant “sheep” who believe the BS you report. Muslims all around the world celebrate birthdays. From the earliest of time man has kept record of his birthdate. It would be interesting to see you post the real language of the Fatwa so we can cleary form our own opinon rathern then your bias. The issue in question is not whether to celebrate the birthday, but how over the top and extreme people go in the celebration. A birthday should be a day to worship and give praise to Allah for the blessings and good life he provides for us. Instead, most people in the world use it for a day of celebrating “us,” full of self-indulgence with no reflection of the blessings from our creator. Ignorant people, Wake Up!

Posted on November 8, 2011 at 5:39amActually Christians didn’t celebrate birthdays for the first couple hundred years either. They thought that was a pagan practice. They celebrated the day of a person’s death because that would be their entrance into heaven.
Report Post »Their reasoning was that everybody is born the good and the bad. You had to wait until you had lived your life to see if your life was worth celebrating. That is why Easter was celebrated long before Christmas. Then St. John Chrystostom (sp?) took the date that Zachariah would have been serving in the Temple. I think there were 24 or 26 classes of priests and he was of the 8th class. Every class served for a week or two weeks, I forget. Any rate he knew from accounts of the fall of the Temple what class was the last to serve. There was one problem a historical text had an error in it by then that placed the death of Herod at 4BC when it was actually at 1 BC. So he figured enough time for both John the Baptist and Jesus to have been born and Herod to still be alive with when Zachariah could have been serving in the temple and tada Dec 25, 5 BC.

Posted on November 8, 2011 at 5:47amThe interesting thing is there is a video about the Star of Bethlehem really worth watching that tracks the signs in the stars. There were signs that marked his conception and birth which got them moving toward Jerusalem in Israel (Jupiter goes into retrograde, a backward loop, forming a crown around the head of the Leo the lion (Lion of Judah), but the star that shines over where the child lay was a near joining of Venus and Jupiter. That appeared on Dec 25th . Dec 25th is the date when the wise men arrived to worship the child Jesus at least that is when the really bright star appeared. So St. John Crystotom “accidently” got an important date even though he was working with faulty data.

You are right……….”Christians didn’t celebrate birthdays for the first couple hundred years either. They thought that was a pagan practice.” That’s because it was a pagan practice. Posted on November 8, 2011 at 1:51amMuslims are totally irrelevant in American Society. Everything “American” has been built upon Jewish and Christian religions. The Muslim’s “Shariah” Law doesn’t work here because here in the USA, men and women are considered to be equal.
Jesus Christ was born a Jew, yet he launched the Christian religion. The Muslims believe that Jesus Christ was only a prophet, as they believe Mohamed was. Personally, I’m disgusted by those who are Muslims. I believe that Islam is a sick and disgusting religion.
