Muslim Woman to Run for President in Opposition to Face Veil Ban

PARIS (The Blaze/AP) — To Muslim women who wish to remain hidden behind face veils, France’s law forbidding they wear the religious garment is considered an attack on their freedoms. These women have been protesting the regulation since it was put into place back in April.

One Frenchwoman — who wears an Islamic face veil in protest — is turning heads, as she announced Thursday that she wants to run for president in next year’s elections.

Also Thursday, a French court fined two women who have refused to remove their veils. All three women are part of a growing attack on the law that has banned the garments from the streets of France since April and prompted similar moves toward a ban in other European countries.

They are bent on proving that the measure contravenes fundamental rights and that women who hide their faces stand for freedom, not submission.

“When a woman wants to maintain her freedom, she must be bold,” Kenza Drider told The Associated Press in an interview, discussing her bid to become a presidential candidate.

President Nicolas Sarkozy strongly disagrees, and says the veil imprisons women. Polls show that most French people support the ban, which authorities estimate affects fewer than 2,000 women who wore the veil before the ban.

Drider declared her candidacy Thursday in Meaux, the city east of Paris run by top conservative lawmaker and Sarkozy ally Jean-Francois Cope, who championed the ban.

But her activism is nothing new; she has been vocal for months about her opposition to the veil ban. Back in May she said, “I would rather go to prison than take off the face veil.” Below, watch a report from PressTV that showcases some of Drider’s statements about this policy change earlier this year:

Two other women arrested wearing veils in Meaux – while trying to deliver a birthday cake to Cope – faced a court date Thursday. One was fined euro120, the other euro80. The law envisages fines up to euro150 and citizenship classes for those caught wearing the face veil.

The women were hoping for a conviction, so that they can take their case to France’s highest court and the European Court of Human Rights.

With Islam the second religion in France, there are worries that veiled Muslim women could compromise the nation‘s secular foundations and undermine gender equality and women’s dignity. There are also concerns that practices like wearing full veils could open the door to a radical form of Islam. Lawmakers banned Muslim headscarves in classrooms in 2004.

Belgium passed a similar face veil ban that took effect in July, and the Netherlands announced Friday it has drawn up legislation to outlaw Muslim face veils. A draft law has been approved in Italy.

    I would think this would be more of a security issue than anything else.

    I really don’t understand if they want the same Religion the same opressive garb why not stay in an
    Arab country where all is permitted?? Why do they want to be HERE in the west?? Just to make

      They don’t see it as oppressive,i guess. different strokes for different folks.What people wear is an expression of culture. if and when muslim women decide they don’t like it[and not all muslims wear muslim garb] it is their business to reform that culture. As ridiculous and oppressive as it looks from our sensibilities-it does not follow that everyone’s sensibilities are or should be ours. that is what makes us human-not feral animals.We impose meaning and derive pleasure on the meaning we impose on ourselves through beliefs. Those beliefs can include religious beliefs and religious beliefs can include approptiate male/female relationships ,codes of conduct and dress. There is satisfaction to submitting to ones beliefs.There is room in the world for different cultures no matter what we here may feel about other cultures.

      That’s it, Steve. They have no tolerance. She’s fighting for the freedom to live under Sharia laws, not the laws of France (or any other country they occupy). They are fighting with laws, we want to use weapons…it won’t come to that…they will refuse…they don’t need to use weapons to destroy us.

      People need to understand guerilla tactics, counter insurgency, Art of War. You win by strategy. After WWII, there is no all out shoot ‘em up deals. The Cold War assured everybody’s mutual destruction, so the strategies have adapted to conquer by idealogoy.

      We need to be United against the USA’s enemies…who are in and around the White House and in many towns near you.

      What is freedom for a human bein? We are not ferral animals .A person who believes he/she is free,IS free. The moment a person does not feel free they are not free. All culture is a form of brainwashing since we are not ferral animals but beings that make culture. We drrive meaning from our beliefs,practices, religions, ,codes of behavior ,ethics etc. That is what gives satisfaction to human beings. freedom is believing that you are freely living according to your beliefs. if for muslim women it means submissiveness to their husbands, covering themselves etc.- if they feel they are freely choosing this then they are free. All culture is brainwashing.because we are not feral animals but impose on our animal natures -contraints and limits that give meaning and satisfaction to being human.One day people will look at us and see how brainwashed this culture here and now is too. a person who believes they are free is free. What you wear, what your penal codes are , what your ethics are are irrelevent to how free you are. A regime superimposed [like an american backed dictator] is not a culture and hence when they are imposed people cling to their religion and beliefs. hence the rise of fundamentalism in secular iraq as a result of our invasions.

      Don’t be so sure. I’m “Hispanic”…yes another stupid label to separate people. I saw white union members trashing Wisconsin and a white union boss in Detroit saying to Obama let’s get the SOBs! Hispanics are not a strong voting block. Neither are blacks. Now other immigrants like Muslim that’s a different story. They do vote. Big majority of them vote. It’s funny (read sad) how foreigners come to America looking for the American dream but as soon as they get here they try to make it like their country.       I was talking about the ILLEGAL ALIENS who come here and breed for years. Their children should NOT be American citizens.

      But because of a archaic amendment meant only to ensure the children of slaves were citizens, the perversion of any woman from anywhere in the world boarding a jet and landing in LA/NY, etc or wading across a water border can drop an anchor baby on US soil and say that child is an American is NOT following the Constitution.

      At first no one cared to bother to repeal that unneeded piece or DEFINE it correctly when states started abusing it and kicking out birth certificates to ANYONE and then politicians wouldn’t do enforce it because of fear of angering the VOTING Hispanic population

      IF our USA Constitution were TRULY HELD UP and applied citizenship ONLY to the children of slaves which we no longer have so the amendment is obsolete like the part of our Constitution that says the military cannot “quarter” in people’s homes, then the Hispanic population in this country here legally would be halved.

      I have nothing against Hispanics or any other person from another country that comes here LEGALLY.

      I take to offense, my family and I are immigrants from Poland, we came to US looking for better life and worked hard to achieve it by working two-three jobs, all of my family learned English and blended into the typical US neighborhoods (block parties, bbq, parades etc). We still have Polish traditions but we accepted the US ones too (Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, Veterans Day). I and my two brothers are serving, two of us deployed to Afghanistan on multiple occasions, third brother is commisioned as officer. We do not call ourselves Polish-American, Eastern European-American or European-American, we are Americans. We wear the US uniform with a US flag on it. That is the thing that bothers me – most people want to feel special, they want to be Pacific Islander- American, Muslim-American, African-American, whatever – when they are just Americans, most came here to find a better life, to get away from the oppresion, bad economy or something else they did not like about their motherland. By promoting diversity, multiculturism we get divided, its happening and its sad to look at.

      Seriously? We need a president that will tell everyone to embrace being a American in the first place. A president that will not be afraid of being unpolitically correct and tell how it is. The citizenship test is a joke, all you need to do is memorize 100 some questions, then they will ask you 15 of them. How does that make you a American? it doesn’t. People come from all over the world and try to make the US like their own home, have you seen some of the Hispanic sections of LA or Chicago? looks like Tijuana, same thing with China Town and others. The government should not be promoting Diversity or Multiculturism, it should be telling people that upon getting your citizenship you are a American, that by coming to our country you chose to become a American, you chose to embrace the American lifestyle (no face coverings, etc). I hope this changes with the next election. It is amazing to see how fast things change, I came to US in 96 and I did not hear such debates about religion (Islam) or diversity, and now look at the US. It is scary what next ten years will bring unless we change how the government operates.

      Submitting samples of the Westboro baptists and the KKK may seem relevant to some but I find it an abomination to the true teachings of Christ. Christians follow Christ. Not Moses or Noah or any other prophet or rabbi found in the old testament. Christ is the focal point and in Christs words we find the true redemption of man. His teachings are one of love and compassion not burning crosses or lynching of men. Not wishing death and despair. I follow Christs teachings not what some racist bigot pulls from scripture and distorts the truth.

      When an ideology controls all people weather they subscribe to the faith based principals or not then it begins to be a political ideology. You just cant wave your hand and say this isn’t true. But you did. The outlined examples found within the link I’ve provided clarifies this in great detail. As communism destroyed God and replaced Him with the State so to does Islam. Except the State is faith based that promote death and destruction to all non believers if they choose not to convert or pay the jizya tax.
      It seems we agree on some points except the root of the issue. Islam is practiced only by Muslims. But those who dwell under the umbrella of Islam are second class citizens and must abide by the laws within the ideology. In no other so called religion on earth do we see this.

      So if a large enough group of people finds your religion to be a menace in their opinion, they can deem it as a non-religion? Isn’t this why the Pilgrims sailed on the Mayflower? Violent or not, it is still a religion. The problem is in the act of violence, not voluntary use of veils.

      Also, lets not be too pious. Islam has historically done conquering by the sword from the very start, but mainstream Christianity has been knee deep in blood and politics for thousands of years. Protestants and Catholics alike have been known to kill over conversion in the past. We didn’t start out that way, and I think Christians have, in general, gone back to our more peaceful roots.

      As for politics, until actions held by people like Henry VIII, and Martin Luther, the Catholic Church wielded a strong power over much of Europe and used it to impose its will over kings and country. Glenn has pointed out that many churches today are knee deep in “Social Justice” politics, and then there are folks like Westboro Baptist Church. If you want to count Mormons, they ruled Utah as a theocracy under Brigham Young. If we are going to throw out the baby with the bathwater, we need to declare Christianity a non-religion too by those standards.

      Don’t get me wrong, there are significant problems with certain swathes of the Islamic culture in my opinion, but as long as their practice of their religion does others no harm, I see no reason to tell them what they can or cannot do as a sign of fa

      If you would have opened the link on political Islam you would have seen that more then half of the 3 doctrines of Islam comprise as to how to deal with kafirs (infidels) non Muslim. It goes on to mandate eating, sleeping, working habits etc. kafirs are not allowed to practice the faith but are enslaved by the islamic masters and ruled as such. the other 40% regard to the religious issues of praying and following allah.

      It’s astounding to me that people still try to compare Christianity with Islam. Islam mandates it’s followers to force kafirs to convert, enslave or kill them. Christians simply preach the doctrines of Jesus who spread love and compassion. You keep applying man made Christendom to the subject and expect to show some sort of comparison. There is not ONE verse in the new testament that condones any of the atrocities done in the name of Christ by man. Sinful man took the religion and made it evil. But Christs words remain unchanged. On the flip side Muhammad inspired by Allah led by example of rape and murder and inspired evil within his doctrines.

      And finally, you buy into the myth that Islam is OK as long as it doesn’t do any harm. There isn‘t a single thing about Islam that isn’t harmful. ooo yes you have some who claim to be followers of the Muslim faith but they are not. (so called moderates) They are apostates who simply follow SOME of muhammad teachings but pretend the other parts don’t exist. I suggest you study Islam.

      I hate to break it to you Steve, but even though you and I may agree that Christianity doesn’t condone violence or hate, there are others that read hate and violence into the Bible. Westboro Baptist and the KKK are examples of this. Folks in those groups would disagree with us. They would tell us that we are picking and choosing verses or interpretting the Bible improperly. This may drive you nuts, but you know it is true. While you and I may focus on Jesus in the New Testament, these guys may be hunting for Old Testament to take out of context. Still, it is legal for these groups to exist for a reason. It doesn’t make me happy that they exist, but they have a right to be wrong, and to gather, and the right to be jerks as long as they don’t hurt others. The problem is the violence, intimidation, and forcing others to do things against their will, not the words and symbols.

      Christian foundations in the Old Testament Mosaic law can be taken to extremes like your video if carried out literally. In example:
      “Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.” — Exodus 31:15 (KJV)
      Death for not resting? Like an actual execution as a result of mowing the lawn on a Saturday? The Judeo-Christian world has moved past that in literalism. Much of the Muslim world has not updated their interpretation of their laws but this can change, or maybe they can’t….

      Maybe you are right. Lets say you are right, and ALL Muslims actually believe those types of violent things as a core foundation of their faith. It is still a religion. It doesn’t change my position. They can believe all they want these things which we openly disagree with, but to the extent that they are (A) not committing violence, and (B) not forcing their rules onto others who do not wish to participate, it should not be against the law. Once they go past that line, then we can talk about the law.

      Choosing to wear a head scarf by your own choice is not hurting anyone. Some Christian and Jewish sects follow similar practices. By banning a symbol of their faith, you are simply angering the more unhinged of the group and focusing on a behavior that is completely acceptable when you should be focusing on the unacceptable behaviors. You aren’t going to stop people from being Muslim by banning basic Muslim symbols of faith; you are simply going to build opposition to that attack and possibly incite violence.

    This is the muslims attempt to seize christian judeo societies, and force their beliefs/customs into the mainstream. They’ll start that crap here too.       i remember years ago, a radio d.j. was talking about a european trip he was on. he sat in a wonderful town square, at a coffee shop, surrounded by enormous churches and cathedrals. at the next table were a couple/few muslim business men commenting to him about the lovely day. “cant get any better” the d.j. said. the muslims said in return, “it will be better after we have torn these churches down, and in time we will”

    Oh, this should be RICH! This will probably settle the issue once and for all. The French are not as “politically correct” as we, and a great majority agree with the ban. Good luck to you Kenza!
    And (Ms./Mrs./Miss?) Drider would make a great addition to the opposition candidates’ next debate. The first debate was UNBELIEVABLY detached from reality (”Should we legalize marijuana?). Can’t wait to hear her (muffled) response….
