Israel Not Invited to Chicago’s NATO Summit

BRUSSELS (The Blaze/AP) — NATO has announced that Israel will not be invited to its May 20-21 summit in Chicago, but denied that alliance member Turkey blocked Israel’s participation.

Instead, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Friday, the reason is Israel does not participate in NATO’s main military missions.

News reports have claimed that Turkey blocked Israel’s participation because of the raid in 2010 by Israeli troops on aid ships heading to Gaza during which eight Turks and a Turkish-American died. For example, Russia Today cited a Turkish official in a Turkish newspaper saying Israel had to apologized first for what has become known as the Gaza Flotilla event:

The objection to Israel’s presence at the event, which will take place in Chicago on May 20-21, was voiced by Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu during the alliance’s meeting in Brussels last week, reports Turkish daily newspaper Hürriyet.

“There will be no Israeli presence at the NATO meeting unless they issue a formal apology and pay compensation for the Turkish citizens their commandos killed in international waters,”
a senior Turkish official told the newspaper.

The unnamed official said other NATO members were pressing Turkey to revoke the veto, but Ankara refused to acquiesce. He called on Israel’s supporters in the conflict to convince Israel to do as Turkey wishes.

The blocking is the latest in a string of Turkish moves against Israeli cooperation with NATO. Earlier it stopped Israel from opening an office at the NATO headquarters and blocked its participation in the Mediterranean Dialogue group.

Israelie news outlet Haaretz seems to have had a similar story, but it appears to have been pulled.

Israel Not Invited to Nato Summit

Instead, Haaretz now has a story quoting a U.S. diplomat saying that Turkey did not block Israel’s appearance and that the country was never invited in the first place:

A U.S. official indicated Thursday that Israel’s absence from a NATO conference was not the result of Turkey’s intervention, adding that Israel was never invited to the conference in the first place.

Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Gordon stated at a hearing of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that there was “misconception” surrounding Israel’s appearance at the Chicago summit.

According to Gordon, Israel is an “important partner of NATO, certainly an important ally of the United States….But the Chicago summit was never going to have a meeting of every single one of those partnerships, simply as a matter of logistics and time.”

NATO has a system of partnerships with dozens of nations across the globe such as the Mediterranean Dialogue, a NATO outreach program with seven friendly nations, including Israel.

Fogh Rasmussen said 13 partners will attend the summit, but only those that have taken part in such NATO military operations.

This story has been updated with new information.

If I went to a party and my friend that I stand behind was not allowed to go then I would also not attend. So why is the U.S. not standing up for their friends? We let Turkey make stupid demands to apologize and NATO says they don’t participate enough. The U.S. should support Israel and also not attend.
Is it really going to hurt anything or anyone if they attend? Where is the fairness you keep speaking about Mr. President???

Or Israel could petition to join NATO. If they don’t and thus are not a member than Turkey has every right to request they not be invited. As a non-member Israel should take direction from the outcome of the summit. I guess the real point is does Israel pledge to defend other NATO countries or merely worry about itself. Why is everyone always focused on the US or someone standing behind or helping Israel. And rarely do we hear Israel voicing support for NATO countries or helping the EU financially.

Did you see how Obama‘s administration outed Israel’s covert alliance with Azerbiajan to use their air bases for a northern attack on Iran? How about Saudi Arabia, another Middle East ally (until yesterday) who Obama’s administration just outed their secret agent who had infiltrated Al Qaeda? How many covert Saudi agents are now in peril because of Obama’s treasonous leak?

So this is why Putin is NOT coming ??

Is this part of Samantha Powers attack against Israel ? You know, Samantha ..obama’s advisor on Foreign Policy. Samantha, wife of Cass Sunstein. Samantha, who wrote “Responsibility to Protect”, which Soros funded as part of his global plan .You ‘attack’ Israel as a way to ‘protect’ other countries…such as Palestine or Iran. .Samantha, who called for a military invasion of Israel to create a palestinan state…..Samanatha who was removed from the obama 2008 campaign for calling Hillary “a monster’ but was hired by obama as soon as he was elected. …Samanatha reportedly heavily influenced Obama in consultations leading to the decision to bomb Libya…..as a “Responsibility to Protect”

Responsibility to Protect, as cited by Obama, is a set of principles, now backed by the United Nations, based on the idea that sovereignty is not a privilege but a responsibility that can be revoked if a country is accused of “war crimes,” “genocide,” “crimes against humanity” or “ethnic cleansing.”. This is what the U.N. will use against Israel…..or the U.N. can use it against U.S. sovereignty…the U.N. has already accused the U.S. ‘human rights abuses’.

Samantha Powers has been named as obama’s likely pick for Sec. of State or National Security Advisor in his 2nd term. Study up on Samantha…she is as dangerous as hubby Cass.

It made sense to have a mutual defense agreement with Turkey during the Cold War. Whether that
agreement should have been NATO or a bilateral agreement? Who knows?

It made a Soviet Union invasion of Central Europe more problematic if they had to worry about their southern flank. Turkey was also an excellent base to bottle up the Southern Russian ports & keep tabs on them.

When they joined there were seen as more secular. All that has changed when an Islamist party came to power circa 2000.

A US interest in Turkey goes back to 1947, when Truman in his Truman Doctrine speech asked for aid to help the Greeks fight Communist guerrillas. Since the Greeks and the Turks were longstanding enemies, the appearance of tilting toward the Greeks might antagonize the Turks, who had been subject to Soviet pressure over the Straits. So aid was also extended to the Turks in 1947, and in 1952, when Greece joined NATO, so did Turkey.

The regime is giving up or agreeing to give up more and more sovreignty to the UN(Useless Nitwits). The UN tells us to put Mr. Zimmerman on trial? Really? The NAACP bypasses the court system in the US to go to the UN re requiring photo ID to vote? Hilary agrees to abide by the small arms treaty and releases funds to the Palestinians over the hold put on by Congress? All passes practically unnoticed by the two original Democrat Super-PACS: the media (indoctrination arm of the Dems) and the unions (financiers, indoctrinators and strong arms)

When I was at SHAPE in ‘86 there were already discussions to add Israel to the then 14 nations already involved. As for the Turks, I recall a particular incident where a lower enlisted Turk could not load his assigned pistol. He was literally trying to pour the rounds into the mag well then attempted to insert the mag. The German NCO in charge of that shift actually punched him out. Unfortunately he had to pack his bags and return to Germany the following day. Shame too, he was a great guy.

I have a hard time believing Turkey didn’t have a hand in this, as they DID block Israel’s inclusion in the Mediterranean Dialogue group, earlier. A NATO partner group that Israel IS a part of, and should have been included in.

They claim now that Israel isn‘t invited because Israel doesn’t participate in NATO’s main military missions. Who’s fault is that? Israel refuses to join? Or NATO refuses to include, because so many of those missions are in Islamic countries that wouldn’t take kindly to Israeli troops.
