Israel Weighs ‘Gravity’ of Iranian Ships Set to Transit Suez

CAIRO (AP) — Iran‘s first attempt in decades to send warships through the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean on Europe’s — and NATO’s — southern flank could further destabilize the Middle East, a region already reeling from an unprecedented wave of anti-government rebellions.

Egypt’s new military rulers, who took power from ousted Hosni Mubarak a little more than a week ago, have granted two Iranian warships passage through the strategic waterway — something Israel has made clear it views as a provocation. Still, Egypt appeared to have no other choice because an international convention regulating shipping says the canal must be open “to every vessel of commerce or of war.”

Iranian warships have not passed through the Suez Canal since 1979.

The vessels bound for Syria are not expected to enter the canal before Tuesday or Wednesday, according to maritime sources in Egypt. On Sunday, the frigate Alvand and the supply ship Kharq were still near the southern entrance to the canal.

The canal linking the Red Sea and the Mediterranean enables ships to avoid a lengthy sail around Africa. The Iranian ships are headed for a training mission in Syria, a close ally of Iran’s hardline Islamic rulers and an arch foe of Israel. In Syria, officials at the Iranian embassy said it would mark the first time in years that Iranian warships dock in a Syrian port.

Iran is suspected by the U.S. and Israel of gearing its nuclear program to develop weapons, something Tehran denies. Israel considers Iran an existential threat and is watching the warships’ movements with growing alarm. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Iran on Sunday of trying to exploit recent instability in Egypt and told his Cabinet he views Iran’s moves “with gravity.”

The request by the Iranians to send the warships through Suez is a test of the foreign policy intentions of Egypt’s new military rulers, the gatekeepers of the canal. Mubarak, an ally of Israel and the U.S. who ruled for nearly 30 years, was toppled Feb. 11 by a popular uprising and the country is now run by a military council. Mubarak was considered a bulwark in the region against Islamic extremism.

“Iran wants to say to the world, to the U.S., Israel and other countries in the Mideast that it has reach not only in areas close to it but also farther away, including in the Mediterranean,” said Ephraim Kam of the Institute for National Security Studies in Israel.

He said Iran is also signaling to Israel that it is prepared to protect its allies Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon on Israel’s northern and southern flanks.

A senior Iranian naval commander told an Iranian news agency already several days before the Jan. 25 start of the revolt in Egypt that Iran planned to dispatch warships to the Mediterranean, via the Suez Canal. The commander said candidly at the time that the mission was to gather intelligence on the region and train Navy cadets to protect Iranian cargo ships and oil tankers against attacks by Somali pirates.

But Iran appears to have more far-reaching objectives, including asserting itself as a regional power and testing whether Egypt‘s new rulers will stick to Mubarak’s pro-Western line, analysts said.

Iran’s influence has grown in recent years, with the political rise of its proxies Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, and its close alliance with Syria. At the same time, Israel lost the friendship of Turkey and the nature of its with post-Mubarak Egypt remains uncertain.

Egyptian-Iranian ties broke down after Tehran’s Islamic Revolution of 1979 and the signing of the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty the same year. Later, the relationship improved slightly, with contacts currently channeled through interest sections in the two capitals.

Iran’s request last week to send warships through the Suez Canal came at a particularly difficult time for Egypt, with the transition government focused on pressing domestic issues, including restoring security after the uprising.

“Iran now sees a window of opportunity to force the Egyptian government to make a stand and either tell Iranians something unpopular in Egypt (denying passage) or allow something that would be a diplomatic coup for Iran, and put the onus on Israel to make a defensive gesture,” said Shashank Joshi, an analyst at the Royal United Services Institute for Defense and Security Studies in London.

Canal officials, citing an 1888 international convention regulating shipping, said Egypt had no choice but to permit passage to the Iranian vessels. The convention says the canal must be open “to every vessel of commerce or of war.”

It was not immediately clear whether Iran had requested passage for its warships at any time since 1979, and if not, then why.

Applying the same principle, Egypt has also permitted the passage of an Israeli Dolphin-class submarine, which according to foreign reports is capable of firing nuclear-tipped cruise missiles.

In Brussels, NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said Sunday that the decision on the Iranian vessels “is up to the authorities of the Suez Canal.” Diplomats at NATO said privately that the organization was in no position to object since it insists on right of free passage of naval vessels through international waters.

Israel’s options appear limited, since the perceived provocation may not be enough to warrant a strong Israeli complaint.

Netanyahu did not say Sunday how Israel might respond, if at all.

Avi Dichter, Israel’s former internal security minister, said Israel should be more concerned about Iran’s suspected nuclear weapons ambitions — denied by Tehran — than about two naval ships reaching the Mediterranean.

Left-wing liberal’s, not the people. We should have a vote, should we send billions to Israel while we are 15 trill’ in debt, or should we keep those billions to reduce the debt, I think I know the answer already. I talked to this Jew named Eugene Levant after we had some beer and I asked him what he thinks about taxes and rasing them, he said ” I could care less, Jew’s pay taxes in the U.S. but they don’t care because all the Jewish tax money goes back to Israel”. I almost knocked him out when I heard that.

So the Twelfth Imam, the hatred of the Jews, and the hatred of the western civilization…Aren‘t we being told by the mainstream media that there isn’t anything to fear and that it’s all about democracy, religious tolerance, and the rights of all the 3rd world countries who want to kill everything for an insane ideology to have nuclear weapons?
Don’t people remember what happened with Hitler? ‘Oh no he’s not a bad guy, there isn‘t any threat he poses to the world’. Yeah right. Then what happened with the Jews? Even better, he was willing to use the other countries helping him while they thought they were using him in return to conquer the world. Of course there is absolutely no resemblance whatsoever to what happened over half a century ago and the levels of ignorance that allowed it to fester until it showed how fatal it would be.
While others pretend it’s nothing, I’ll be waiting with a gun ready to defend myself from the extremists wanting to bring back the Twelth Imam.

I fear for what is about to happen. All hel- is about to break loose over there. These ships are not coming for goodwill. Is there any way to inspect them I wonder? Is there no authority at all over anyone anymore so that we know what they are carrying and what they may be up to?
Heavens help all of us and Israel and all those people. I do know, based on things Obama has said, that he has very little support for Israel. There are so many billions of Muslims, they cannot be stopped. They know that this president is sympathetic to their cause and is weak. They said so, in those exact words. They said, we have no strong leadership and our president is nothing to worry about for he is ignorant on such matters and has no skills in leading this country. The time is ripe, they claim. I tend to take them seriously. Now we will see demonstrations and violence in every City and State in tis Country. It is coming.

“Iran” is the Farsi word for “Land of the Aryans.” Muslims were big fans of Adolph Hitler and, as a matter of fact, the shah of Iran changed the name of the country from Persia to Iran in 1935 to show his support for the Nazis. Keeping this in mind, does anyone really think Ahmadinejad is kidding when he says he wants to wipe Israel off the map?

I agree.. this situation has taken a very dangerous turn. Thank you for the heads-up on this. I doubt that a sandstorm would prevent modern satellite technology from knowing the whereabouts of these ships. I’ll almost bet there is a sub or something that is up close and personal as we speak. Special ops had those ships tagged not long after they left their port.

I also have my OSHA certification and never had a leak on any one of my jobs.

I use to work at a gypsy camp but I was laid off so they could hire illegal immigrants instead. I think it had something to do with the new environmental regulations (RED TAPE) and the company is shutting down soon so they can move to China.

On the job I don’t talk about politics nor do I discus what happens at work (don‘t ask don’t tell is my philosophy). I just want to make an honest living so I can have a better life. I have no problems with working weekends and I’m willing to travel.

My dziadak use to work in the business before he retired; he passed † a couple of years ago.

I tried to get into the union but they were only hiring minorities so they could meet their quotas. I wanted to start my own business but I predict taxes are going to skyrocket and I can’t afford Obama care. In 1988, I received the ‘Gas Piping Nazi Award’ (GPNA) but in the face of diversity, it’s just a piece of paper.

I’m rather surprised that it took the third world countries in the MidEast to realize that all the bowing and scraping Barry Soetero (Peanut Butter Up His) was a signal that they could get away with anything they had a mind to attempt because our military was otherwise pre-occupied in other endeavors.

His attempts to neuter our military (along with Bush’s ignorant rules of engagement) have made us look so inept the muslims have decided to push their luck and see what they can get away with for the next two years.

With Hussein (PBUH) at the wheel, pandering to the cult of death, they think they are the coolest on the block now. When the useful idiots finally realize they are first on the execution list, it will be too late for them to prevent losing their heads. When was the last time you went to the West Bank? Mine was nearly twenty years ago and I never saw any Concentration Camps like you claim and if there are any it is because Hamas and the PLO have turned them into one. Since the Palestinians want to wipe Israel off the map which is not what the 1948 UN Resolution creating Israel was about. Jews and Palestinians have lived in peace for Centuries in that part of the world. It wasn’t until European Jews abandoned by the Free World that liberated them and refused to repatriot them or accept them into their country we have this problem. It was Harry Truman President of the US that under the Progressive caucus of the Democratic Party of 1948 refused to allow the European Jews into the US so the were basically People with out a country and it was Truman that went to the UN to offer up Palestine as a place to go since all through recorded history the land had Jews in its territory.

And with this latest threat we don’t know what those ships have on board and they could be supplying hezbullah with newer long range missiles that could strike into Jerusalem the Great City of David and of Soloman the son of David and Bathsheba.

“I doubt that Obama will have the guts to really support the freedom movement in Iran , it’s really too bad to miss such an opportunity .”

In this case, Obamas weak backbone is actually a good thing. The Iranians need to win their freedom for themselves. If a foreign power supports them it’ll give their enemies more ammunition to destroy the freedom movement, i.e. it’d be easier to order the Iranian army to shoot foreign-backed revolutionary elements than to shoot their own people.

The two Iranian vessels are basically tug boats with a machine gun. Not much of a real threat. I’m sure their actions have all kinds of political and strategic ramifications. They would probably like nothing better than to get an aggressive response from Israel in this political climate. The scariest thing is that Aquavelvazad wants to cause chaos setting off world war 3. He probably won’t push it too far until he gets his nuclear weapons and then all bets are off.

This is very serious indeed. While I think this is merely a diversionary tactic by the leaders of Iran, it has the potential to set off a huge powder keg in the region. There is already plenty of unrest in the Middle East, this certainly will not help. I don’t think Israel will play around on this one, nor should they.

What’s the saying “seize the moment”

      a) they have the approved jihad
      b) they have unrest
      c) they have a weak/hmm, how shall I say this, they have a passive Obama who’s more worried about carefully selected words then sound action
      d) and then there’s Hillary (who takes off to Haiti during Egypt uprising and who’s big statement to the world is: “they’ll work it out”) sheesh

Iran will play this card and in my opinion it will backfire. Why?

Because Israel’s (THANK GOD) with our without the US blessing (although they have mine) will not mess around with this.

Oh and then there is that UNREST in Iran and it’s not the first time, the majority of Iranian’s hate Ahmadinejad. So hmm, things ought to get interesting soon.

      I pray for Israel.

I agree Robert. Like I said before, the whole sending of the warships through the Suez Canal was a diversionary tactic. The leaders of Iran will not play around with the protestors, but they also don’t want the rest of the world watching how they deal with the people in the streets of Tehran.

The best distraction is, in my opinion, the multitude of revolutions happening right now. While there are still many deaths and casualties in Iran, the situation in Lybia is far worse and will thusly get more press coverage. So I cannot see why Iran would want to draw more attention to itself by sending warships through the canal.

      ————————————-
They are emboldened to do so for good reason. Fear and intimidation not to eff with the US and Israel has played a big role in keeping what peace there has been. But two years of Obama bowing and apologizing to the Islamic world and undermining Israel (most recently last week in UN vote) has emboldened the Iranians and radical Islamists who view weakness as a sign from Allah to advance on the victory he is preparing. This is the kind of incompetent foreign diplomacy and feeble posturing that starts big wars.

      Danger indeed.

To anyone that thinks Ahmadinejad is on one of those ships fleeing his country…I really hope you’re kidding. I‘ve ben reading and studying this man’s every move for the past 5 years and any one that knows just the least bit of information about him would know that he is one arrogant, cocky, confident man that would have to be shot dead and dragged out of his country before he ever willing left it. He has much bigger goals and problems to deal with than the couple thousand protestors in his country. He believes his very reason for living is to usher the Mahdi into Iran and to then “take care of” the little and big Satan’s. He believes the Awaited One is in the middle east right now directing all of the protest and chaos and that he is about to make himself known to world. Ahmadinejad is simply following orders right now from the Mahdi’s chosen leaders. Do you think it was a coincidence that chaos broke out in Egypt, or may it have been a well designed assault to take out the Westerner’s and Israeli major middle eastern ally so that they could utilize the Suez for strategic military purposes?

These two little Iranian warships “peacefully” sailing through the Suez will go down in history as the catapults that started the apocalypse.

      *************************
That is an outrageous statement and an anti-Semitic provocation.
Next you will be saying that all the taxes the Muslims pay in this country goes back to Saudi Arabia et al.
Or maybe all the taxes you pay should be sent to Poland!

I believe the reason(s) cannot be simplified in this situation. One has to consider the timing for one. This happened on the heels of Mubarek leaving Egypt. Iran would never have been given permission to pass through the canal with him in power. So in one sense this was a testing of the waters in Egypt with regard to the military leaders. It was also (once approved) a rubbing of Israel’s nose in the fact that Egypt has changed, and probably with regard to Israel not for the better. It is also, I believe, a shot across the bow, a “go ahead and do something, I dare you” exercise. To degrade Israel by doing something that hasn’t happened in years. I doubt this has much to do with the protests as this action was set in motion shortly before the protests began. Think of this similarly to North Korea testing missiles, to ridicule or mock in a way South Korea and the US. They weren’t stupid enough to actually want war with either. However, I do not want to down play the lunacy of Mahmoud Imamindfreak either. Madmen are always capable of defying reason and choosing irrational choices. That’s why I believe Israel must watch them very intensely, but not be lured into striking first at this point if the provocation remains just passing through the Suez Canal. Just my 2 cents

In the short term Libya, Eritrea and Ethiopia will align with Iran. Jordan will NOT. Israel will turn to Germany for protection because they can no longer count on the US. After Iran takes East Jerusalem by force it will be Germany i.e. the EU combined that will take out Iran the King of the South. Germany will double cross the Jews “and when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel the prophet standing in the holy place; Mat. 24:15; and :21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.
