Israeli Ambassador Flees as Egyptians Break Into Embassy in Cairo

CAIRO (AP) – Protesters broke into the Israeli Embassy in Cairo Friday and dumped documents out of the windows as hundreds more demonstrated outside, prompting the ambassador and his family to leave the country. The unrest was a further worsening of already deteriorating ties between Israel and post-Hosni Mubarak Egypt.

Egyptian police made no attempt to intervene during the day as crowds of hundreds tore down an embassy security wall with sledgehammers and their bare hands or after nightfall when about 30 protesters stormed into the Nile-side high-rise building where the embassy is located.

Just before midnight, the group of protesters reached a room on one of the embassy’s lower floors at the top of the building and began dumping Hebrew-language documents from the windows, said an Egyptian security official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

In Jerusalem, an Israeli official confirmed the embassy had been broken into, saying it appeared the group reached a waiting room on the lower floor. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not permitted to release the information.

Israel’s ambassador, Yitzhak Levanon, his family and other embassy staff rushed to Cairo airport and left on a military plane for Israel, said airport officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Israeli officials refused to comment on the ambassador’s departure. No one answered the phone at the embassy late Friday.

Since the fall of Mubarak – who worked closely with the Israelis – in February, ties have steadily worsened between the two countries. Anger increased last month after Israeli forces responding to a cross-border militant attack mistakenly killed five Egyptian police officers near the border. Egypt nearly withdrew its ambassador from Israel, and protesters demanded the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador. Calls have grown in Egypt for ending the historic 1979 peace treaty with Israel, a pact that has never had the support of ordinary Egyptians.

Several large protests have taken place outside the embassy in recent months without serious incident.

On Friday, Egyptians held their first significant demonstrations in a month against the country’s military rulers, with thousands gathering in Cairo and other cities. Alongside those gatherings, a crowd massed outside the Israeli Embassy’s building.

It quickly escalated with crowds pummeling the graffiti-covered security wall with sledgehammers and tearing away large sections of the cement and metal barrier, which was recently put up by Egyptian authorities to better protect the site from protests.

For the second time in less than a month, protesters were able to get to the top of the building and pull down the Israeli flag. They replaced it with the Egyptian flag.

Crowds outside the building photographed documents that drifted to the ground and posted some of them online.

Mustafa Sayid said he was among the group of protesters who broke into the embassy. He showed a reporter cell phone video footage he said he recorded inside of young men ransacking the room.

The group got into the building through a third-floor window and climbed the stairs to the embassy. They worked for hours to break through three doors to enter the embassy, said the 28-year-old man. They encountered three Israelis and beat one of them.

Several Egyptian military policemen appeared and escorted the Israelis to safety but did not attempt to arrest any of the protesters, who then set about dumping files out the windows, he said.

“They have papers on us, they collect information on us, so it’s only fair that we share information on them,” he said.

It was not until several hours later that Egyptian police and military forces firing tear gas moved in to try to disperse the protesters from around the embassy. By that time, the crowds of youths had swelled to several thousand. Protesters were cleared from inside the building but held their ground outside, lobbing firebombs at the forces and setting fire to several police vehicles.

The military moved about 20 tanks and troop transport trucks into the area. State radio reported that one person died of a heart attack. About 450 people were injured, including 200 who had to be hospitalized, the Health Ministry said.

In Washington, President Barack Obama assured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the U.S. was acting “at all levels” to resolve the situation.

Obama expressed “great concern” about the situation, the White House said.

Senior Israeli officials were holding discussions on the embassy breach. Israeli Defense Minster Ehud Barak said in a statement that he also spoke with his American counterpart, Leon Panetta, and appealed to him to do what he could to protect the embassy.

The demonstrations against Israel coincide with increasing discontent among Egyptians with the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which took control of the country when Mubarak was forced out on Feb. 11 after nearly three decades in power.

Several thousand massed Friday in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, as well as in the cities of Alexandria, Suez and elsewhere. Demonstrators in Cairo also converged on the state TV building, a central courthouse and the Interior Ministry, a hated symbol of abuses by police and security forces under Mubarak. Protesters covered one of the ministry’s gates with graffiti and tore off parts of the large ministry seal.

Seven months after the popular uprising that drove Mubarak from power, Egyptians are still pressing for a list of changes, including more transparent trials of former regime figures accused of corruption and a clear timetable for parliamentary elections.

Activists accuse the council, headed by Mubarak’s defense minister, Field Marshall Hussein Tantawi, of remaining too close to Mubarak’s regime and practicing similarly repressive policies, including abusing detainees. The trials of thousands of civilians in military courts has also angered activists.

“In the beginning we were with the military because they claimed to be protectors of the revolution, but month after month nothing has changed,” said doctor Ghada Nimr, one of those who gathered in Tahrir Square.

One banner in Cairo read, “Egyptians, come out of your homes, Tantawi is Mubarak.”

      I couldnt agree more. So it begins… Dont forget. this revolution was praised and incited by OUR government, and our State Department “invested” money into social media networks for more of the same.

      It seems that the “Arab Spring” and the “democratic revolution” in Egypt has gone the way most conservatives in America prediicted, all is in the hands of the Islamic extremist led by the Arab Brotherhood. All has turned into a “extermination program” against Israel as during the Abdul Nasser military regime. However, like in the 1967 “ SIX DAY WAR ” the Israelies will be victorious and the current Israeli/Palestinian conflict will be a thing of the past as Israel takes possession of ALL it’s land.

      Barack Obama‘s and Hillary Clinton’s praise of the movement has gone sour. Now, there’s nothing they or anyone else can do about it, including the Egyptian military forces. With Egypt and Libya in chaos half of North Africa is now in the hands of the Muslim Jihadists that are determined to vent out their frustration and hate against Israel. The majority of Americans that support our long and fruitful alliance with Israel expected no less. Liberals can’t lead !

      It’s just a matter of time before the unrest in Egypt and Libya blows up into a full scale war against Isreal. If or when this happens, what will be President Obama’s position? Well, lets read his quote in one of his books, THE AUDACITY OF HOPE, ” I’ll stand with the Muslims should the political winds of war shift in an ugly direction.” Such a quote from now President Obama doesn’t leave ANY DOUBT as to where his politics and support lie.       I first saw this story on the Kudlow Report cnbc at about 645 cdt. I checked the Blaze for this story then and it wasn’t here yet. Who didn’t see this coming? Seems to me that embassy should have been closed long before this. Where is peace and freedom any more? New York today looks like a police state and it seems like this rotten islam has already won there. The world is insane because of micro management by the few elite meglomanics pounding their Fabian hammers….not because of capitalism.       Like most other community organizers, otherwise often known as revolutionaries, Obama gets the ball rolling, but subsequently is not able to control the ensuing holocaust-like reactions, nor if you take an even cursory look at Obama’s pre-presidential activities, such as his support of radical Muslim Raila Odinga, of Kenya, burner of over 600 Christian churches, does Obama particularly want to control the incendiary results, provided well organized groups like the Muslim Brotherhood emerge to control and rule in the final outcome. Do not think for a moment that had the uncontrollable rioters gotten a hold of the Israeli ambassador and his family, they very well may not be alive today.
      Been to Egypt among everyday people – most decent. However, many youth are either schooled in radicalism or easily swayed by Muslim Brotherhood youth leaders, who use them and deceive them.

      BTW, the so-called 67 borders were NOT borders. They were ceasefire lines — nothing more. They were not recognized by the UN or most of the member countries.

      And furthermore, embassy grounds are considered sovereign territory of the nation, not the host nation. The attack on the US embassy in Tehran was an act of war by the Iranians, just as this is an act of war by the Egyptians.

      You can get many young people to do dumb things. The Cultural Revolution was a youth movement started by Mao and ended by Mao when he had to use the army to stop it. Young people literally have too many brain cells, causing them to be incapable of really clear-headed thinking. This is why they generally make notoriously poor decisions! This tendency makes them the ideal victims of manipulation to violence. Fortunately for us all, who are over 25-30 yrs of age, the excess brain cells go away as our brains finish the maturation process. The Founders instinctively knew this and set a minimum age limit of 35 for the Presidency.

This entity is not a sweet little Catholic girl in love with Islam and its people.this entity quoted in one post the rantings of Jeremiah Wright (Obama’s pastor) about how America’s chickens have come home to roost. It also wrote in a post about how it was lying there thinking and watching the nuns coming down the corridors or hallways and thinking “what the hell” This person most likely is of the Muslim Brotherhood here in the states. I wouldn’t be surprised if its not of the highest echelon of the US. This entitiy is trying to change the hearts of Americans..one heart at a time… just like it is supporting the taking down of all the Arab nations by helping the Brotherhood…one nation at a time via the “Arab Spring” then all these people shouting that Muslims are not a problem to us as long as we stay out of their business.. well it just so happens that we are their business.       Rose-Ellen is the least of my worries. Because making stupid racist remarks like that helps no one. Clearly has never read the Bible or believes in God. I really feel sorry for people like that because when they will have to explain it to the Creator. Then they are going to beg for forgiveness. But to say that it is perfectly acceptable to do this to anyone for any reason is showing how ignorant they really are.

      BUT when he attended that school (he attended two different schools while he was there), he was registered as a MUSLIM, which means he was inculcated Islam in school. Hussein practiced Islam while he was in Indonesia, for two obvious reasons: Indonesia is a Muslim country, and his step-daddy was a Muslim. 1 + 1 = 2.

      In re @Rose Ellen, he/she is NOT American, and he/she is an ISLAMIST. I don’t get why so many people here find that person amusing or spend so much time feeding an apparent troll, who is really an enemy of the United States.

After having read that post last night, all I could think of was the anti-Christ. It was bone chilling. This person has a a pretty good knowledge of the Catholic Church and a vast knowledge of Isam and a real hatred for Americans, and this person may well have sat in Reverend Wright’s pews. This Rose Ellen is highly educated. It is like it has been exposing the dark recesses of its mind. Do you understand?

Can you imagine placing Obama in the place of Rose Ellen? Rose Ellen. is more than likely a man, who espouses Reverand Wrights theology about how America’s chickens have come home to roost. Rose Ellen has a strong Islamic background yet versed in Catholicism we know Rose Ellen claims to be a US citizen but is not. Sounds like Obama to me. Now how’about that for a concept. I am not saying that is so. just saying that everything that Rose Ellen says..I could see coming out of the mouth of Obama. So when you read Rose Ellen’s posts, try seeing Obama being the one saying it. It’s pretty creepy.

    Things are getting ugly in the Arab world the various countries are having revolts & the most organized & disciplined groups are the Islamist militants that want the blood of the infidel running in the street. The trashing of an Embassy is a act of war the fact that the weird beards are stirring the pudding will lead to blood shed & it wont be good for the Arabs cause they are good at bushwhacking children but fighting a serious army not so much. The IDF is a serious army.

      The mainstream media is under control, I don‘t watch them and haven’t for years and people should stop watching and listening to them and quit complaining about them, their not going to give you the truth about nothing. The elderly and the dedicated demo’s that started watching ABC, CBS, NBC most of their lives that I know of are partly the ones that voted for the deciever king hussein.

    I am surprised. Unfortunately I am not surprised they did it, but I am surprised it took them this long. If I was the President, I would try to give as much of the conflict states in the middle east to Israel as possible. We don’t need a two state solution, we need a 1 state solution and the reasoning is simple. In Israel people are allowed to practice any faith like here in the US, even Islam. On the other hand, in most mid-east states you are not allowed to practice any religion. Make the whole middle east one big Israel and you would get religious freedom, rights for women, etc.

      You say we can practice any faith here in America. Get your head out of the sand boy. Christianity here in America is under attack. We NO longer can have graduations with prayer in them or say anything about Jesus Christ at them. We have to cover up any passages from the Bible and cover up the Christian cross because one person is offended. No longer can the Navy Chaplains say Jesus Christ in there sermons. Now the Air Force cancels Bible courses and Bible verses from news rooms. obama cancels The National Day of Prayer because he doesn’t want to offend anybody. But he can celebrate rahmadan and invite imams in the White House. You have the mayor of New York who bans any religous leaders from attending the 9/11 ceromony. Everybody was asking for prayer that day for the victims of that terriorst act. Even the American flag is under attack. America has changed for the worse since obama took office. he goes around the world bashing America. You say we can practice our Christian faith think again. When obama goes and makes speaches if there is any religious things in the background it has to be covered up. Just go to you tube and put in obama praying and see what comes up. Thanks for voting for barack hussien obama….. boy.

      the sad part is yes it can. the people who want to exterminate the jews, like muslims, i can understand. what gets me the most is how alot of people see the signs, see whats happening and still think there is nothing going on. or the communists who actually think they can use this to establish power. they do not understand that miuslims only tolerate them as long as they are useful. once the liberal left stops being useful, they will be killed or converted. thats why i keep saying that islam must be destroyed. the few good ones ill try to help. but its a waste and dangerous to make that the prime goal.

The Egyptians are neighbors of Israel & the dummies are founding an Egyptian Nazi Party the stated goal of this party is to finish what Hitler started . The Egyptian army still has a stockpile of chemical weapons from the days when the old Soviet Union were the main arms source ,The Israelis have a nuclear triad just like the United States does.     The police and military are more to blame than the demonstrators. I’m surprised they helped the ambassidor & co.get to the airport. That is the last embassy from Israel they will ever see in Egypt. We’ve just witnessed a minor historical event.

    None there will guarantee your safety…truely you have none!
    I am glad those at the Israeli Embassy made it out safely…
    I think it should be a warning to those in other countries as well.

      Here we go. Make no mistake, the takedown of leaders in these countries have zero to do with democracy and everything to do with dispensing with leaders who will not stand with radical Islam to destroy Israel. And Obama knows it. Libya is the same issue, sure G was a dictator, but he didn’t really have a hard stand against Israel. That is a problem for the Muslim Brotherhood, who will take over and have stated that they will impose Sharia law and a full Islamic state. Yea….democracy. Obama and Hillary know it very well.
