Israeli Defense Minister Warns on Iran: ‘All Options Are on the Table’

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel‘s defense minister warned on Tuesday of a possible Israeli military strike against Iran’s nuclear program and rejected suggestions the Jewish state would be devastated by an Iranian counterattack.
(Related: Israeli PM reportedly drumming up support for attack on Iran)
Ehud Barak spoke a day before the United Nations’ nuclear agency was expected to release a critical report on the Iranian program. The report is expected to implicate Iran in bomb building and erase any doubts about the nature of the program, which Iran says is designed to produce energy, not weapons.
Barak told Israel Radio he didn’t expect the International Atomic Energy Agency report to persuade Russia and China to impose what he called “lethal” sanctions on Iran to pressure Tehran to dismantle its nuclear installations.
“As long as no such sanctions have been imposed and proven effective, we continue to recommend to our friends in the world and to ourselves, not to take any option off the table,” he said.
The “all options on the table” phrase is often used by Israeli politicians to mean a military assault.
The U.N. has imposed four rounds of sanctions on Tehran, but none has succeeded in curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions. On Tuesday, Barak suggested adding a naval blockade that would cut off Iran’s economic lifeline, oil.
Israel views Iran as its greatest threat because of its nuclear program, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad‘s repeated references to the destruction of the Jewish state and Iran’s support for Palestinian and Lebanese militant groups.
With most of its population concentrated in a narrow corridor of land along the Mediterranean, Israel’s homefront could be vulnerable to a counterattack if Israel were to strike.
An Israeli attack would also likely spark retaliation from local Iranian proxies, the Hamas militant group in the Gaza Strip to Israel‘s south and Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon along Israel’s northern border.
Barak lashed out against recent media reports and statements by current and former officials suggesting that he and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were intent on attacking Iran, over the objection of Israeli defense chiefs.
Any Israeli attack would likely draw Iranian retaliation, with media reports suggesting as many as 100,000 Israelis could be killed.
“This outlandish depiction (by the media) of two people, the prime minister and the defense minister, sitting in a closed room and leading the entire country into an adventurist operation is baseless and divorced from reality,” he said.
A larger forum of Cabinet ministers would have to make that decision – if it is made at all, he said. “We haven’t decided yet to embark on any operation,” he said. “We don’t want war.”
But if Israel is dragged into one, he said, “I tell you there won’t be 100,000 casualties, and not 10,000 casualties and not 1,000 casualties,” he said. “And Israel won’t be destroyed.”
In 1981, Israel stunned the world with an airstrike on an unfinished nuclear reactor in Iraq that destroyed Saddam Hussein’s nuclear program. Israeli warplanes also destroyed a site in Syria in 2007 that the U.N. nuclear watchdog deemed to be a secretly built nuclear reactor, though Israel never acknowledged responsibility for the attack.
Iran’s program would be significantly more difficult to cripple because its facilities are scattered, and some are mobile and built underground.

Posted on November 12, 2011 at 1:06amFrom the Shah to the 1st Ayatollah, I had friends fleeing Iran. My best friend, his older and younger brothers escaped. His father, mother, three younger brothers, 2, 4 and 7, and his two sisters did not. The children were murdered before the parents’ eyes, and then they, too followed suit. All were butchered with swords like animals. Their crime? Why, their father was guilty of Christianity and capitalism. There is much that I know about Iran: when Brits, French and U‘S’ put a “friendly” dictator in power 40 years ago, there was peace & prosperity at 1st. When revolt began, special ops(CIA, CIA trained) became the “SS, Brown Shirts, whatever you call them. When the Tehran students took over U.S. embassy, it was partly because they’d learned of a pre-emptive strike to halt a coup.(It wouldn’t be 1st time our embassy would be used for such a thing, and the rumors that time was true as well.)
Report Post »So, we haven’t been able to infiltrate their politics since. This is not meant as a history lesson, but you can get the rest as it’s no secret. So, knowing this, none of that matters. What does matter is we have only one single true friend over there, and if my nation has become so gullible we elect a muslim as our president and turn their back on Israel, know this: Israel, you are God’s favored children by birthright. I am God’s child by His mercy and by His grace. And I will stand with my brothers: in times of peace and prosperity, and in times of WAR, and FAMINE. ADONAI

Posted on November 8, 2011 at 12:17pmIt’s funny how people like Smackdown accuse others of living in a fantasy world. If Iran gets nukes, Israel is not the only country that needs to worry. Ever heard of an Ebomb? A nuclear device detonated 300 miles above the middle of our country would create an EMP that would hit the entire continental United States. If you think this is Israel’s problem and we should stay out of it (except to retaliate against Israel), than maybe you should remember who they call the “Great Satan”. Also, you might be interested to know that Iran has done extensive missile testing from container ships…you know, the kind of ships that come in to our ports by the hundreds and thousands each day. Posted on November 8, 2011 at 11:13amWell SMACKDOWN it boils down to this. Jews are the chosen people of God therefore those who stand against the chosen people, stand against God.
This does not mean that everything every Jew does is good or righteous, nor is that the case for Israel either. No one is perfect, we all make mistakes. But if you stand with God, then you must support his chosen people, especially when they are attacked as we all know Israel and Jews in general have been.
Nothing has so positively affected the world as the advent of Judeo-Christian values which are directly, inextricably religious in nature, and the world is demonstrably better for them. But then if you won’t even entertain the idea of this God, or believe in one that allows you to do anything to anyone, as long as it furthers the reach and power of your God and religion, you seek that which existed before these values, which was to say the least, barbarous.

Posted on November 8, 2011 at 10:24amThis is happening because Obama has effectively flipped on tough sanctions against Iran’s central bank, essentially siding with Iran. Obama has blown one opportunity after another to keep this situation from getting to this point, disregarding military advice from the Pentagon. Russia and China are backing Iran. Israel is essentially alone, backed into a corner and being threatened with annihilation. If we were in the same position, a preemptive nuclear strike would certainly not be out of the question.
In this situation, and from a military strategy point of view, you have to take out other possible enemies at the same time. Sort of like the strategy during the cold war to take out China and North Korea if a war with the Soviet Union began (which was the strategy). That would mean that a decisive nuclear strike on Iran would potentially include similar decisive strikes on Syria, Gaza and perhaps others at the same time to prevent attacks from these regions. That is the source of the statement that there will not be significant casualties and Israel will not be destroyed.
Generally unrecognized by the American people is that an inept president has pushed the world into a position potentially as dangerous than the Cuban Missile Crisis 51 years ago.

Posted on November 8, 2011 at 10:14amIran has been taunting the western world with their military intentions for a long time now. If Israel feels it is necessary to defend itself with “all options on the table” I say good for them. This fight is bigger than the west vs. Islam. It is the most pure form of light vs. darkness. This war will begin soon, as it must for goodness to prevail. Those who give their lives for the struggle against evil will know in their hearts that they were on the correct side of history. This cycle has been repeated throughout history and has had many different players, but it always boils down to this very element. Our short sighted view of historical events leads many of us alive today to believe that it is the first go around for this struggle, we are merely witnessing the events unfolding this time. Defend light to the death.

“you definately prove the clueless wacko part..wow….oh yeah your muslim neighbors are your friends….until they achieve critical mass as in france…then you’d better bow down….”
I would never bow to them sir, and I happen to work with a few Muslims who are not bad people, yes I dont agree with them on stuff, but they are not an ‘enemy’. The ‘achieving critical mass’ IS THE PROBLEM, yes I agree. That’s an immigration issue, but so is the fact that by 2040 whites will be a minority due to our declining birth rate, replaced by Latino’s (and illegals), many who look to Mexico first over the US (ever wonder why they fly the Mexican flag at their ‘let us be American’ rallies?). So why your afraid of the Muslims taking over, be wary of the radical illegals who are taking over as well, and doing a much better job of flying under the radar.

Posted on November 8, 2011 at 8:46amThat would definitely make him a one term president unless he does what you’ve mentioned in the past and declares martial law with no elections. Part of the over all plan??

Posted on November 8, 2011 at 8:55am@TexasVet — probable, this POTUS we have is playing so many directions and sides against each other that the old Macavellians would be proud of him, just as his puppet master Soros manipulates entire economies and nations.
As far as Obama is concerned, it does not matter who is sacrificed in his quest for power and to set the world afire; so long as he comes out on top — yet the POTUS fails to understand, in turn Soros is playing him and the others for the larger game.
