JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel’s navy boarded two protest boats trying to break the blockade of the Gaza Strip on Friday and towed them to an Israeli port just north of the Palestinian territory, officials said.
The military said forces boarded the boats after repeated calls for them to turn around were ignored. The boarding was done peacefully and nobody was hurt, the military said.
It was the latest attempt by pro-Palestinian activists heading for Gaza by boat to draw attention to a 5-year-old blockade of the impoverished coastal strip that critics say amounts to collective punishment of its residents. Israel says its naval blockade is vital in preventing weapons from reaching violent groups like Hamas, the Iranian-backed militant group that rules the Gaza Strip.
Once the vessels reach the port of Ashdod, the activists will be questioned by police and immigration officials and then sent back to their home countries as soon as possible, said Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld.
There were 27 activists from nine different countries including the U.S. and Ireland aboard the boats.
In Gaza, activist Amjad Shawwa, called for the release of the activists, who he said “were on a civil trip to Gaza to help the Palestinians.”
Israel sees the attempts to break the sea blockade as provocations and publicity stunts. It says the amount of aid in the small boats used by activists is insignificant, as Israel transfers aid to Gaza daily.
Shawwa said he had spoken with activists onboard the boats about an hour before they were boarded, when they were surrounded by Israeli naval vessels. But contact was later severed when the activists’ satellite phones stopped working. It was not clear if Israel was jamming them.
The Israeli military issued a short video clip showing a naval official calling on the ships to turn around. “The Gaza area and coastal region are closed to maritime traffic as part of a blockade imposed for security purposes,” the unidentified officer said.
“Your attempt to enter the Gaza Strip by sea is a violation of international law. We remind you that humanitarian supplies can be delivered to the Gaza Strip by land, and you are welcome to enter Ashdod port and deliver supplies through land crossings.”
Israel’s navy has intercepted similar protest ships in the past.
Last year, Israeli troops killed nine Turkish pro-Palestinian activists when they resisted an Israeli operation to halt a similar flotilla. Each side blamed the other for the violence.
Israel has said its troops fired live ammunition only after they were attacked by activists armed with knives, clubs and metal bars and they felt their lives were in danger. The activists say they were attacked first.
The incident sparked an international outcry and forced Israel to ease its land blockade on Gaza, which was imposed in 2006 and tightened, with Egyptian cooperation, after Hamas seized control of the territory the following year.
Militants in Gaza have fired thousands of rockets into Israel in the past decade, and now have much of southern Israel in range. Gaza militants fired dozens of rockets at residential areas in southern Israel last Saturday, killing one Israeli and injuring several others.
Speaking after prayers at a Gaza City mosque, Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas prime minister, addressed the passengers aboard the boats, saying, “Your message has been delivered whether you make it or not.”
“The siege is unjust and must end,” Haniyeh said.

During a search aboard the maritime vessel Mavi Marmara, IDF forces uncovered a cache of weapons including many knives, slingshots, rocks, smoke bombs, metal rods, improvised sharp metal objects, sticks and clubs, 5KG hammers, firebombs and gas masks in case IDF forces fired riot dispersal means at the activists as they violently attacked the soldiers.
These weapons were used against Israeli Navy personnel as they attempted to board the ship. 7 soldiers were injured during the incident, which included activists taking two pistols from the soldiers and firing at them.

You sound like such a troll! They don’t go there to give humanitarian aid and everyone knows it. They go there to provoke and instigate. Gaza does not need anything. They get tons of aid. Why do you trolls come on here and try to bother people who aren’t bothering you? Do many conservatives come on your liberal/socialist sites to argue their side with you ding dongs? Posted on November 4, 2011 at 11:33amHamas is a declared enemy of Israel firing rockets and mortars at Israeli citizens. A blockade is a valid non-violent response that can itself be considered an act of war; Israel desires to check the cargo, allowing non-military goods pass. This seems a restrained response to acts of war against it. The flotilla is purely a political/propaganda stunt attempting to break the blockade. Seems the author of the comment is neither himself informed, biased against Israel, or both.

Posted on November 4, 2011 at 11:45am@Jrook – Only one problem with your “analysis.” Israel has compromised, over and over again, and gave the Palistinians everything the wanted, EXCEPT the so-called “right of return.”
In case you don’t understand the “right of return,” it means Israel’s land, ALL OF IT, belongs to the palistinians…. i.e. their position is Israel must cease to exist. Period. THEY WILL NOT COMPROMISE THAT.
You might want to look into the history of unprovoked attacks against Israel starting the day it was created. You may also want to ask yourself why you believe only Israel must compromise, and why the palistinians don’t need to compromise anything. And why is it that a majority of muslims living in Israel said they would stay in Israel even if a palistinian state was formed. I think you know the answer. Muslims have more freedom in Israel than they do in any of the muslim nations, and through that freedom they have a higher standard of living.
After the next war, I doubt very much that Israel will give back the land it wins in the war like they did the last 3 times.

peaceful people trying to help people in need?
They are running a blockade. That’s not peaceful.
Their are other ways to bring in supplies. Just follow the trucks bringing in flat screen TV, Expensive European Cars, Dishwashers, Medical Supplies, Food Products, jacuzzis and thousands of other essentials that help these so called victims. I suggest you obtain all the facts before you start insulting those of us who know the truth. The blaze posted such an article when the last flotilla made a big stink. Wakeup2011 needs to wake up!

Posted on November 4, 2011 at 4:50pmOn What premise do you spill your swine all over this site on? Israel has the right to guard their own territorial waters just like the U.S does, WakeUPmoron. Ever take a close look at Code Pinkos, commies and community leftists that are always doing these publicity stunts? Oh and lets not forget the “peaceful” CAIR terror supporting world networks always involved in this provocation.

Posted on November 5, 2011 at 2:44pmDon’t you think they could deliver “food and medical supplies” in any other way besides running a blockade? Or are you too stupid to think for yourself? Or are you just a troll?

Posted on November 5, 2011 at 2:53pmAnd no one goes floating into a sovereign country to protest. Not one country in the world just lets you come into their country without permission. Go away because nobody wants to hear your idiocy. When you can actually think maybe then.

Posted on November 4, 2011 at 11:12amThe blockade requires ALL vessels to go to an Israeli port to stand for inspection. With that in mind, if the ships are carrying authorized goods they are transfered to vehicles and driven into Gaza….Israel shows tremendous restraint in what they are doing and if Hamas used their monies to actually support the Palestinians with food and comfort rather than brainwashing their children and strapping bombs onto them you would see a tremendous change in the plight of the Gaza strip!!

Also from Vancouver Sun article:
A statement from the group Canadian Boat to Gaza, which is involved in the mission, said on its website “Canadian and Irish ships sailing with Freedom Waves to Gaza are likely being illegally boarded and commandeered right now by the Israeli military in international waters — or they are about to be.”
A Twitter posting from this group Friday morning said: “Estimated location of the Tahrir — now stopped and being boarded — was just 35 (nautical miles) from Gaza.”

What was botched on the interception of the Flotilla in 2010 ? Israeli forces were attacked and defended themselves.

Posted on November 4, 2011 at 11:00am“Israel navy boards Canadian Gaza flotilla ship”
Report Post »http://www.vancouversun.com/news/Israel+navy+boards+Canadian+Gaza+flotilla+ship/5657370/story.html
The article begins…
Two boats, including one from Canada, that were headed to the Gaza Strip in protest of sanctions imposed on this region, have been intercepted and boarded by Israeli authorities Friday.
“A short while ago, Israel navy soldiers boarded the vessels which were en-route to the Gaza Strip, attempting to break the maritime security blockade that is in place in accordance with international law,” the Israeli Defense Forces said on its website Friday morning.
“The boarding was carried out following numerous calls to the activists onboard and during different points at sea. Following their unwillingness to cooperate, and after ignoring calls to divert to the port of Ashdod, the decision was made to board the vessels and lead them there.”

Posted on November 4, 2011 at 12:21pmNaw, that is not a good idea. Israel wants to inspect the boats and if they are truly transporting food and medicine, then Israel should see they do get to the correct people. However, they want to make sure the people do not get off the boat as they could be terrorist posing as humanitarians.
