Israeli Paper Details Alleged Tense Confrontation Between Netanyahu and U.S. Ambassador Over Obama’s Iran Policy: ‘Lightning and Sparks Flew’

Report: Netanyahu Confronts U.S. Ambassador Dan Shapiro over Obama’s Iran Policy, as Joint Chiefs Chairman Dempsey Says he Doesn’t Want to Be “Complicit” in an Israeli Strike on Iran

Two new signs point to the deepening rift between the Obama administration and the Israeli government over how to stop Iran’s nuclear weapons efforts: a reported confrontation between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the U.S. ambassador to Israel and a statement by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Martin Dempsey that he doesn’t want to be “complicit” in an Israeli strike on Iran.

The Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronot headlined its Friday paper “The Confrontation” with a photo of Netanyahu on one side and President Obama alongside U.S. ambassador to Israel, Dan Shapiro, on the other. Veteran diplomatic correspondent Shimon Schiffer reports that during a private meeting last week, Netanyahu very undiplomatically attacked Obama and his advisers over what he views as their ineffective Iran policy. The incident took place when Republican congressman and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers visited Netanyahu’s office for an Iran briefing, accompanied by the U.S. ambassador to Israel. Schiffer reports (translated via hard copy by TheBlaze in Israel):

Netanyahu, according to a source who participated in the meeting, was particularly surly and stressed. At the start of the meeting, he opened with a sharp attack on the Obama administration which according to him has not done enough on the Iranian issue. “Instead of effectively pressuring Iran, Obama and his people are pressuring us not to attack the nuclear facilities,” he said, and then moved on to a harsh criticism of the administration’s pronouncements indicating there is still room for diplomacy. “The time has run out,” he said resolutely.

At one point, an anomalous thing occurred in the office, which is very unacceptable in diplomatic code. Ambassador Shapiro who was appointed by President Obama and for years was among his closest advisers decided he’d had enough. Enough is enough. He spoke and answered Netanyahu politely but in a manner that left no room for doubt.

The ambassador in fact accused Netanyahu of distorting Obama’s position. He quoted the president, who promised he would not allow a nuclear Iran and said that all options – including a military strike – are on the table […]

Diplomatic sources who were privy to the incident say that “lightning and sparks flew” in the room, and that the exchange of words became more harsh.

The U.S. embassy wouldn’t comment to the Yediot correspondent, and TheBlaze has not independently confirmed the story’s accuracy.

Meanwhile, Joint Chiefs Chairman Martin Dempsey voiced his strongest opposition to date to any unilateral Israeli strike on Iran’s nuclear plants. He told reporters in London: “I don’t want to be complicit if they [Israel] choose to do it.” The Guardian reports:

Distancing himself from any Israeli plan to bomb Iran, Dempsey said such an attack would “clearly delay but probably not destroy Iran’s nuclear programme”.

He added: “I don’t want to be complicit if they [Israel] choose to do it.”

Dempsey said he did not know Iran’s nuclear intentions, as intelligence did not reveal intentions. What was clear, he said, was that the “international coalition” applying pressure on Iran “could be undone if [Iran] was attacked prematurely”. Sanctions against Iran were having an effect, and they should be given a reasonable opportunity to succeed.

For now it appears Iran’s nuclear march proceeds unabated by sanctions and diplomacy, as reflected in the most recent International Atomic Energy Agency report. According to the IAEA’s latest quarterly report, Iran has more than doubled the number of centrifuges it has in its underground Fordo bunker, vastly increasing its uranium enrichment capacity.

Chavez and Ahmedinajad announce that they are developing a joint drone program–don’t worry! Wonder where Iran got the drone technology???? Once they have advanced their weapons systems many experts believe that Iran will escalate its war operations to open warfare.       Why is Israel confrontational and at odds with Obama over Iran? When was the last time Israel needed US approval to do anything? In times past we have heard the arrogance of Netanyahu and Peres saying they can do whatever they want and US will either just disgruntedly eat it or provide cover. They didn’t need US approval to bomb Lebanon, cast lead, bombing Syria in 02, bombing Iraq in 81, preemptively bombing and invading Egypt in the 70s and assassinating whoever they want. Israel can even get away with attacking American vessels in international waters killing our sailors, planning false flag attacks on the US ala Lavon affair, spying on us ala Jonathan Pollard (who Netanyahu is demanding be released) stealing uranium from us for their nuclear program and even selling our military secrets to China. All Israel has to do is say they are acting in self defense and they can get away with bombing their neighbors preemptively. So if it was self defense to bomb Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Egpyt then why isn’t it self defense to preemptively bomb Iran? Why are they so scared? What are they waiting for? Israel should just manhandle Iran like they have manhandled the rest of their neighbors.

    Mr. Obama has had four years to take substantive action against Iran and their nuclear program and has done NOTHING.

    When Israeli prime minister visited US, Obama made no bones about throwing him under the bus. When Israel notified Obama of previous attack plans, Obama violated the secrecy of those pland and forced Israel to cancel attack.

    Mr. Obama has proven on multiple occasions that he supports Iran and their nuclear ambitions. He supports Muslim Brotherhood and their plans to remove Israel and Jewish people from face of the earth.

We consider the act of actively sponsoring terrorist activities against a foreign nation or the citizens thereof to be an act of war. Iran actively sponsors, arms, and supports Hezbollah and Hamas, both of which have waged repeated attacks against Israel and Israelis. In the case of Hezbollah, there is evidence that they also consider the US to be a target of their operations. Iran has already declared a covert war with Israel and is preparing to do the same to the US. When Israel attacks they won’t be starting hostilities, they’ll merely be escalating them.

      I fail to see your point about America’s aid to Israel. You say America is funding Iran’s enemy, but who decided that Israel was Iran’s enemy? Israel doesn‘t actively call for Iran’s destruction, committed no unprovoked actions, covert or otherwise, against Iran, and doesn‘t have a charter that calls for Iran’s extermination. Both Hamas and Hezbollah not only call for Israel’s destruction, in Hamas’ case the group was founded for the sole purpose of annihilating Israel. It’s in their charter for crying out loud. And both groups have historically and continuously engaged in unprovoked covert actions against Israel as well as actively attacking with rockets and engaging the Israeli military directly.

      Iran made Israel its enemy by siding with these monsters. Jordan stands against them and has peace with Israel. Egypt under Mubarak opposed them and they had peace with Israel. Syria actively sponsored these groups and has seen high tensions with Israel, including military strikes. And we all know where Hussein’s Iraq stood and where it got them. Israel doesn’t even bother Pakistan that has nukes.

      Iran is Israel’s enemy because that is the decision its leaders have chosen. Had we supported the recent uprising to overthrow the Shahs and a new government was formed that was friendly to Israel no one would stop them from going nuclear if they wanted to.

Well they sure are not reading all the Bible, it’s pretty clear in that great roadmap of the world what is coming.     So Obama still wants to push Israel into a corner; send useless notes to Iran and impose ever more useless sanctions no one in the world honors…typical.

    Israel will soon be in a corner and she will lash out when her own redline is crossed; the questions then are – how hard and fast will she hit? Will it be an escalation to nuclear usage? Will Egypt then strike at Israel (recall her military are on the border)? How long until Obama turns on Israel with a vengence?

      He will keep his vengence in check until after the election- then all He** might brake loose, win or lose he will get his point across to Israeli that they should not have messed with him.

      The key to Israel’s survival this time will be the American election. If Obama loses, then Israel is free to defend itself. While they’ve always been able to hold their own in the past, this time the forces of radical Muslim militants have been amassing on ever border they have and aiming at them from every direction afar. If they start, they will be attacked from all sides, If they don’t start, it will be started for them as soon as the Muslim nut jobs feel they have the advantage.

      The deciding factor will be whether or not America is in the fight with them. Put a Republican in the White House, and you’ll see things get quiet alot faster.

      Remember how Iran laughed at Jimmy Carter for 444 days, then released our hostages almost the same minute that Reagan was sworn in. Because they knew that we had just traded a wimp for someone who knows how to and WILL kick a5s.

      Mr. Dempsey is about to be “complicit” alright – in the destruction of Israel, if this administration wins another 4 years. Because this war will be fought between Israel and the Muslim world in 2013, without a doubt.

    To what “effect” is Mr. Depsey referring? That Iran is having a harder laugh at us than before? That we’ve really crippled their ability to buy Jersey Shore DVDs from us? That’ll show em! We’ve got them right where they want us.

    Why wouldn’t Mr. Dempsey want us to be COMPLICIT in stopping Iran’s march toward nuclear capability? You’re the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a55wipe! If you had any stones, you’d be leading the charge.

    These psychos are about to wipe out our allies with NUCLEAR WEAPONS, and you’re going to tell me that sanctions are having an effect?!?!?!? Are you blind or just as stupid as your president?

      Where would they put all of the illegals? Israel shouldn’t trust the U.S. until Americans trust it. The government sues it’s own States. Once you take Obama’s suggestion, your freedom is over!!!
