Israeli Police Raise Jerusalem Security Alert After Intelligence Reports of Possible Terrorist Attack

Veteran journalist Sharona Schwartz is reporting from Jerusalem for The Blaze:

Just days after the terrorist attack in Eilat which killed eight Israelis, the Israel Police have now raised the alert level in this nation’s capital.

Terrorist rockets continued raining on the southern Israeli towns of Sderot, Ashkelon and Beer Sheba throughout the weekend, but intelligence reports guided authorities to put the city of Jerusalem on Level 3 alert, one level below the highest alert which is Level 4.

Update: Late Monday afternoon Israel time police canceled the specific threat alert for Jerusalem.  But the overall threat level remains at Level 3 with an “emphasis” on Jerusalem and southern Israel.

The newspaper Maariv reported officials have received specific intelligence on the possibility of a terrorist attack in Jerusalem.

By contrast, Israel National News reported the intelligence is “of a general, not specific, nature,” adding the timing for the attack was described as “immediate.”

A Jerusalem Police spokeswoman told The Blaze the alert means more police patrols in crowded areas, a more noticeable police presence especially along the seams between Arab and Jewish neighborhoods of the city and the predominantly Arab neighborhoods in East Jerusalem, more roadblocks checking suspicious cars and people.

“Police and border police forces with the help of volunteers are patrolling by foot and by vehicle in crowded areas, in markets, and in Arab villages in order to stop any attempt to disrupt the order and to harm the public safety,” said the spokeswoman, who asked not to be named due to the sensitivity of the subject.

Jerusalem Police Spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby told The Jerusalem Post that police had not received any information indicating any threat of violence against Glenn Beck’s Restoring Courage shows this week in Jerusalem.

“There has been absolutely no decision to change [the event],” Ben-Ruby told the English-language paper. “We are not going to revoke the permit in any way, shape or form.”

A police spokeswoman told The Blaze that the raised alert in Jerusalem was not connected in any way to the Restoring Courage events.

Outside, it was clear there are more police and border police at the malls and the Old City and on the streets. Despite that, the shops and streets were crowded with both Israeli and foreign tourists, this week marking the tail end of summer vacation. It is also an indication of the intrepid nature of Israelis who refuse to let the threat of terrorism disrupt their doing what they want to do and when.

The morning news broadcasts reported some traffic entering the city from the suburbs, a direct result of the more intense security checks at roadblocks.

The police spokeswoman said no arrests had been made as a result of the increased intelligence.

The last terror attack in Jerusalem took place in March when a bomb hidden in a suitcase was left near a bus stop in the area of the city’s central bus station. One woman was killed and 50 were injured in that attack. That was the first serious bombing since 2004.

Since the threat of revenge doesn’t usually deter Palestinian terrorism, it’s unlikely the Israel Defense Minster’s quote in the Israeli press will have much of an impact.

Touring one of the Iron Dome anti-missile defense system batteries in southern Israel Sunday, Defense Minister Ehud Barak put out this warning to those seeking to inflict more harm on civilians: “Whoever acts against us, chances are high that his head will be separated from his body.”

Muslims was 8.1, the math is indisputable.. throw on immigration of muslims flooding europe..and within 40 years.. Christian Europe will not exist.. Holland, has a 50 percent birthrate of muslims.right now. The US.. we are barely maintaing a 2.2 birthrate which is the minimum required to sustain our culture… the very Minimum… and thats with the help of mexican immigration…historically, within 25 years, this trend will be irreversable. according to the video.

Yes Sir, Israel is surrounded by hatred and marked for genecide. Waiting for the Iman to come on the scene, the muslums say anyone who won’t accept Allah must be killed. And they hate us more as we are the great satan so ‘off with their heads’!! A no brainer.( pun intended)..Pray for the peace of Jerusalam,Israel! Does‘nt look like peace when you might have 15 sec’ too get to safety or maybe 40sec’.. If we here in NE. Ohio started throwing rocks or bombs into NW.Penn, how long would they wait till they fire back? My roots go back to the Bedford County when the Kintzy brothers settled in and made a life and began there long line of kinfolk. Our museum is in Waterford, PA. As Israel made the desert bloom by Gods’ Hand all the more hatred toward them. They gave Gaza to them for peace, and tore down all that the ‘Jews’ had built, infrastructure, agriculture, utilities, all on-line and producing ,but as they always do,they take their people back to the poverty and keep them down. We have a muslum for Pres’,who had his muslum bros‘ over for prayer and a dinner to start the mth’ Ramadon. What a guy! He has shown the true fruit of heart and it isn’t for jews or those bigoted, evil, bible believeing christians.Just the mention of His name sparks intense hatred, and our Pres’ is doing his part, fanning the flames. One ? we all must answer, who was Jesus? The prophets are batting 1,000%. Try Matthew 24,and Joel, only 3 chapters. The US turns away from Israel. Praise God! Sh

Well, I am quite sure “our government” DOES know that something is going on over there — most people at the highest levels of national security are highly trained and experienced professionals, despite what some talking head might have you believe. When I was in DC a couple of months ago Netanyahu was in town to speak to Congress and the level of security surrounding his location and movements was extremely high. Security — both national security and the security of domestic and foreign leaders — is serious business. It seems reasonable, in this highly charged climate, for our government to expect its employees be professional and do nothing to jeopardize an already fragile stability. In other words, Beck is an entertainer (in his own words a “rodeo clown” with no diplomatic training or foreign policy experience and can do little to affect diplomatic matters. An elected official, who might be seen as representing the interests of the US government, is another story.

The heightened security has nothing to do with Beck’s theatrics. It has do do with what is going on in Israel itself and the safety of Israeli citizens.

Those of you who “stand with Israel”: I would be interested to know what specific policies you are “standing” for. I am not being cynical; I really want to understand what policies — specifically — you are standing for.

Fair enough GiGi80. I stand for Israel having the right to defend themselves against attack. I stand for Israel’s right to build what ever they want, where ever they want in their country. I stand for Israel’s right to refuse to return to 1967 borders … they won that land back in the war it belongs to them, always has. I stand for a two state solution, as long as the land comes from Jordan.

      @Forced Union Worker

Yours is one of the most thougtful and rational posts I have read here. I agree with you on every point (and I am a teacher who REFUSES to join the union). My issue with many of the posters here is that they often seem to be parroting knee-jerk memes in response to whatever trumped-up “crisis” they are told is imminent. It is hard to reconcile Beck’s recent support of Israel and Jews with some of his earlier comments about the Holocaust and Reformed Jews and his seeming admiration for anti-Semitic authors, like Dilling and Mullins.

Thank you for a serious and respectful response.

GEN 12: 1-3 1. The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. 2. I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing, 3. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

Hear these words America; God means what He says. While I don‘t agree with Glenn’s religious beliefs, I do agree with the principle of standing with Israel. Not because he said so, but because God says so. But, of course, Glenn is standing with Israel because God says so. Please pray for America, Israel, Glenn and those attending his rally. The forces of evil are surrounding them and only God can protect them if we earnestly ask. Thank God for Glenn Beck and those who support him.

Please quit scanning posts in hopes of finding one you can be a jerk about. Nothing in my post said anything about him giving a bad performance. He does have courage for going, and he does have courage for doing something that seems to make him uncomfortable…which is speaking to large crowds from the heart. People seem to forget that actors have all their lines written for them, and they seem to struggle when talking to people about something they care about.

Some of our greatest actors are referred to as “bad interviews” and rarely wind up on talk shows…because it is just not their best side.

As I said, Jon’s message was clear (and achieved a great round of applause) but I felt bad for him as he looked so nervous. I hope he has become more comfortable at public speaking since then, as it can be quite frightening to some people.

amen….. one thing that is never forgotten by an old nurse is how to make a hospital corner on a bed.
It was close to the first thing taught in nursing school.

Us older nurses and aids may be called on soon to help, and whether to treat a wound or to stand guard with a 12 guage, I’m ready.

Where do you live? I am sure that there are VA hospitals or rehab facilities in your area that need volunteers. Or civilian hospitals and nursing homes, for that matter. It may not be as dramatic as vowing to help in some theoretical and unlikely battle, but it certainly would show that you stand with America. In fact, the Cedars — a Jewish nursing home — is right here in Portland. I bet there is a similar facility near your town. A concrete, rather than abstract, way to support your Jewish neighbors.

When the whole thing started in Egypt, it seemed obvious that this would not end well for Israel, or the rest of the world for that matter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnX8Z713U0M
