Israeli Troops Battle Protesters in Syria, 20 Dead

MAJDAL SHAMS, Golan Heights (AP) – Israeli troops on Sunday battled hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters who tried to burst across Syria’s frontier with the Golan Heights, killing a reported 20 people and wounding scores more in the second outbreak of deadly violence in the border area in less than a month.

The clashes, marking the anniversary of the Arab defeat in the 1967 Mideast war, drew Israeli accusations that Syria was orchestrating the violence to shift attention away from a bloody crackdown on opposition protests at home. The marchers, who had organized on Facebook, passed by Syrian and U.N. outposts on their way to the front lines.
“The Syrian government is trying to created a provocation,” said Israel’s chief military spokesman, Brig. Gen. Yoav Mordechai. “This border has been quiet for decades, but only now with all the unrest in Syrian towns is there an attempt to draw attention to the border.”
There was no Syrian comment on why the protesters were allowed to storm the border, apparently undisturbed by authorities. But Syria’s state-run media portrayed the event as a spontaneous uprising of Palestinian youths from a nearby refugee camp.
After nightfall Sunday, Syria’s state TV said there would be an open-ended sit-in at the border, and thousands more protesters were on their way.
The protests began around 11 a.m. with what appeared to be several dozen youths, brought in on buses. It gained strength through the day.
By evening, the crowd had swelled to more than 1,000 people, who milled about, prayed and chanted slogans in an uneasy standoff with Israeli troops in the distance. The army bolstered its positions, posting a dozen armored vehicles and jeeps along the border road.
A small group of youths managed to cut through a recently fortified coil of barbed-wire and took up positions in a trench inside a buffer zone about 20 yards (meters) from a final border fence. Israeli troops periodically opened fire at young activists jumping into the ditch, sending puffs of soil flying into the air.
As the standoff stretched into the evening, Israeli forces fired heavy barrages of tear gas to break up the crowds. Hundreds of people fled the area in panic, while some 20 people laying on the ground received treatment. It was not immediately clear whether the crowd would return to the front lines.
At nightfall, crowds of people fell to the ground in Muslim prayer, and several small groups lit bonfires, indicating the standoff would continue.
Israel had promised a tough response after being caught off guard in last month’s demonstrations, when troops killed more than a dozen people in clashes along the Syrian and Lebanese borders. In Syria, hundreds of unarmed protesters managed to breach the border and entered the Israel-controlled Golan for several hours.
The May 15 unrest occurred on the anniversary of Israel’s birth in 1948, a day the Palestinians refer to as the “nakba,” or catastrophe.
Sunday’s clashes marked the “naksa,” or setback, the term the Palestinians use for the defeat in the 1967 Mideast war. During that war, Israel conquered the Golan Heights from Syria, the West Bank and east Jerusalem from Jordan, and the Gaza Strip and Sinai peninsula from Egypt in just six days of fighting.
Israel returned Sinai to Egypt under a 1979 peace accord, and withdrew from Gaza in 2005.
The Palestinians seek the West Bank and east Jerusalem, along with Gaza, for a future state, while Syria demands a return of the Golan, a strategic plateau overlooking northern Israel which Israel has annexed, as the price for peace.
Still, until last month, Syria has steadfastly kept its border with Israel quiet for nearly 40 years, fueling the Israeli accusations that Syria was trying to draw attention away from the months of protests that have left more than 1,200 Syrians dead.
Ahead of Sunday’s unrest, the army said it would deploy large numbers of forces, along with anti-riot weaponry like tear gas and water cannons, to prevent a repeat of the May clashes.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he ordered forces to show “maximum restraint,” but also said Israel would protect its sovereignty.
“Unfortunately, extremist forces around us are trying today to breach our borders and threaten our communities and our citizens. We will not let them do that,” he told his Cabinet.
The Israeli military said it used live fire only after firing warning shots into the air and issuing verbal warnings to protesters to stay away.
Protesters waved Palestinian flags and threw rocks and trash over the fence, and the sporadic pops of Israeli gunfire were heard throughout the day. The wounded were taken away on stretchers by groups of young men.
“We were trying to cut the barbed wire when the Israeli soldiers began shooting directly at us,” Ghayath Awad, a 29-year-old Palestinian who had been shot in the waist, told the AP at the hospital.
Residents of Majdal Shams, ethnic Druse who remain Syrian citizens while living on the Israeli side of the frontier, watched the protest from rooftops, booing each time the military tried to speak and cheering on the protesters. When troops fired tear gas, a crowd of residents—some holding Syrian or Palestinian flags—began to scream and hurl stones from rooftops at the nearby forces. Israeli anti-riot police fired tear gas and moved into the town. Village elders with thick mustaches argued with the forces, but there were no signs of violence.
Throughout the day, ambulances raced to the hospital in the Syrian border town of Quneitra with the wounded and dead. State-run Syrian TV said 20 people were killed, including a woman and teenage boy, and 325 were wounded, 12 critically. Hospital officials confirmed the casualty count, providing names of all the dead.
Capt. Barak Raz, an Israeli military spokesman, confirmed that protesters made it through a first layer of the border fence—the area protected by barbed wire—but got no closer than 160 yards (meters) away from the final fence. He said the army would “continue to operate” throughout the night to prevent border breaches.
He refused to confirm reports that Israel had laid land mines along the area, saying only that the army “took measures to ensure we wouldn’t allow any crossing into Israel.”
The army claimed that protesters threw firebombs that ignited land mines on the Syrian side of the border. There was no confirmation from the Syrian side.
The recent protests have drawn attention to the plight of Palestinian refugees who fled or were expelled from their homes during Israel’s war of independence in 1948. The original refugees, and their descendants, now number several million, and they demand “the right to return” to the families’ former properties.
“We want on this occasion to remind America and the whole world that we have a right to return to our country,” said Mohammed Hasan, a 16-year-old student who was wounded in both feet.
As a Palestinian living in Syria, he is likely the descendant of people who left or fled the area that became Israel during the 1948-49 Middle East war.
Israel opposes the return of these people, saying it would spell the end of the country as a Jewish state. The plight of the refugees and their descendants is one of the most difficult issues in any future Israeli-Palestinian peace accord.
Around half a million Palestinian refugees live across 13 camps in Syria, a country with a population of 23 million. Palestinians are allowed to work and study in government and private schools, but they do not have citizenship and cannot vote. In neighboring Lebanon, Palestinian refugees are largely discriminated against and banned from all but the most menial professions.
Things were relatively calm on Israel’s other borders on Sunday.
About 400 Gazans hoisting Palestinian flags and posters gathered near the main passenger crossing into Israel, but riot police from Hamas, which runs the Gaza Strip, prevented them from marching toward the crossing.
At the West Bank’s main crossing into Jerusalem, several hundred Palestinian young people tried to approach the checkpoint. They threw stones at Israeli forces, who responded with tear gas and rubber bullets. No major injuries were reported.
Palestinian organizers in Lebanon called off a planned march to the Israeli border after Lebanese authorities had declared the area a closed military zone.

Much of the money given to Israel is funnneled directly back into America through their many PACs AIPAC in particular for the sole purpose of electing more Liberals to political office.. It’s about the most foul thing one could imagine to consider a Nation who is 14 TRILLION in debt borrowing money to give to another Nation who is debt free.

This easily could be the direct work of Iran, the Syrian government, or any number of fringe and radical groups throughout the area to turn attention on Israel and ratchet up the pressure for the world to turn upon them.
If you wish to find the hand of Soros being involved, if he is, look to the shadows and the groups that are supported by him or his donations…that is the way he works.

These mostly young people (because as you well know it is the young who can fight wars effectively, and the Muslim world has the largest youth population in the world), would not hesitate to use sophisticated weapons if they had access to them. Fortunately, they don’t. So they resort to political pressure, rocks, and their deadliest weapon: numbers. If they manage to break through the Israeli border, it will turn into an all out war. Everybody is aware of that, including you. Thus, Israel has to protect its borders, with deadly force if necessary.
We have virtual open borders, and even though we are/were? the most powerful nation on earth, we have paid too heavy a price for it. Open borders is a policy that no other nation on earth follows because it is insane. In Israel’s case it would mean the death of the nation. If a mob came charging in to INVADE MY HOME I would use deadly force to protect it, and I wager, so would you.

Problem is, Martin Luther came out of the Catholic Church, and it was (and still trends in countries where it is the dominant religion), anti-Semitic. Like Jefferson who was trapped in his own slavery-based economy, Luther brought some cultural baggage with him. Men are imperfect. In addition the USA has taken actions against Israel by putting pressure on Israel to give back land for peace which brought no peace and was a farce. The Bush administration did this right before the Hurricane Katrina devastation. Never made any sense to me anyway. It was Israel that was attacked by the Arabs in order to wipe Israel off the map. Israel miraculously won and they should keep their spoils of war. In about 1939 Stalin’s Russia attacked Finland and took a piece of it. Why not put pressure on Russia to give it back?

True, Christians are not allowed to preach the gospel in Israel, but you have been grafted into the Olive Tree (of Abrahamic faith), and since you are walking in the light, you know that their God is your God, and that one day they will open their heart to God’s Son. That should be enough to bond you to Israel.

Here’s a scenario for you:
Suppose Mexicans came and forcibly took back parts of TX or CA, expelled the Americans and redrew the borders.. They were funded and armed by the Red Chinese.. Would the expelled Americans have any claim to the land that the past 10-15 generations had lived on? Would the expelled Americans have any reason to be upset with the Red Chinese for arming their enemies?
Surely you see the parallels there. If you had never read a Bible or been to church service which side would you be on under the above given scenario? Would you side with the Mexicans and the Israelis or the Americans and Palestinians?
I‘m just saying I don’t think it is as black and white as many want it to be; therefore, present both sides accurately as possilbe.

Jews have been told Jesus is the Messiah, they just reject him. They reject GOD. The Jews will not be “evangelists” in the Tribulation as the tribulation has occurred under Papal Rome. Jesus is the tribe of Judah and ANY who do not believe in Christ are broken off his tree of Judah. Jesus fulfilled Judaism.
Yes Jesus scattered the Jews and the 2nd beast violated that curse and established Israel today, not Christ. The Devil wants nothing more then the world to be distracted and fight over dirt. God does not need Israel today. Only those who reject Christ do, whether Arab or Israeli.
Jews will not have eternal life unless accepting Christ.Jew and Muslim can fight all they want over a rock, idol, but a Christians job is to tell them both of Christ and not to fight their evil fight.
The God Jews worship is not the same God as Christians worship just as the Muslim God is not the same as either. Jew and Muslim Gods have yet to send the messiah. The Christian God, God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit has sent the Messiah.

Christianity and Judaism do not believe in the same God. One believes God sent the Messiah Christ allowing you a gentile to be saved the other believes the Messiah hasn’t been sent. Which do you believe in?

Those who believe in Christ are grafted into his Tree of Abraham, his tree of Judah. Those natural branches who do not believe in Jesus are broke smooth off. It does not say those natural branches are spared who reject Christ, it says broke off. What does broke off mean to you and if all Jews are to be saved who is Paul, a former Jew, saying he is trying to save in verse 14? JEWS! Why would Paul find it necessary to save Jews if they have salvation no matter what even thru rejection of Christ? You believe opposite of Paul.
I have been to Israel. It a tourist trap for people and full of what men make to be idols. I need no western wall to pray to. I need no tomb to be kept to pray to. I pray to Jesus the Messiah. I keep no idols before God.
What is the difference in BO‘s collectivism and Glenn Beck’s collectivism? NOTHING. If you believe we must stand with Israel or feel God’s wrath you believe in collectivism. Why did Christ scatter the Jews, arrogance thru rejection of Christ. Jews had the mentality of the Pharisees, the elitists. Christ was not a rich king but a peasants King. First comes last, last comes first. Jews were scattered to be last, to force them to be servants so they shall see Christ as the messiah. Instead they held to arrogance they were chosen, were first of races, and by doing so will come in last. Judaism today is based off of Pharisee teaching and influence and that is their own words. The same Pharisees called Vipers and of the Devil due to arrogance, pride and rejection of Christ.

I don’t stand with Israel merely because of my faith, although it is unquestionably a major factor. I also see objectively how the Muslim world behaves and what they believe, and it repels me to the very core of my being.

Abraham, Isaac and all Jews believe Christ was coming. Jews at time of Christ rejected him and kept practicing till this day that Abraham, Isaac’s God has not sent the Messiah. Jews today do not believe in the Abraham, Isaac God you believe in of Jesus Christ.
Judaism today is a false religion.
True Judaism is Christianity as God the Father kept his promise of Jesus Christ.

You are confused, friend. I went back and researched the word. It appears only in the KJV twice and EXCLUSIVELY in the NT. So your claim that Jews employ the word in reference to Christians is incorrect.
BTW, Okie, “infidel” and “unbeliever” don’t mean the same thing in modern English. Language evolves and connotations change depending on many factors, including culture. The word “infidel” in modern English is offensive and connotes an intolerance of freedom of religion, including the right not to believe in God. That’s why there is a new KJV where the word used is “unbeliever.” Granted, some people still like the old KJV, but the use of that particular word in modern Christian jargon is limited to possibly quoting two verses from a version few ministers even preach from. On the other hand, “infidel” is a common term in modern Muslim jargon. It is used to label non-Muslims in a derogatory and demeaning way.
Your hostility toward Jews borders on hate. What in heaven’s name do you do with the OT? Tear it out of the Bible and trash it, since it is written by Jews and their God is not the same as yours?

Except, Okie, Paul is clearly speaking about a future event. Following is the CEV, which is written in modern English:
“My friends, I don’t want you Gentiles to be too proud of yourselves. So I will explain the MYSTERY of what has happened to the people of Israel. Some of them have become stubborn, and they will stay like that UNTIL THE COMPLETE NUMBER OF YOU GENTILES HAS COME IN. In this way all of Israel will be saved, as the Scriptures say, ‘From Zion someone will come…’ ” (emphasis added)
Paul calls it a mystery, so the explanation is a revelation. How about if you pray and meditate, so the Holy Spirit Himself can teach you? It always works. :)

I said no word of hate. Just I believe Christ fulfilled Judaism and the Religion Jews practice today is a false religion. That the only way Jews will be saved is thru Christ. If that’s hatred, whatever! Hatred would be to think one race is “special” over all the others, even after this special groups openly defies God and rejected his son. Hatred would to be mad anytime one challenges your brainwashing of arrogance.

I encourage you to turn the parrot off in your head and reread Romans 11 and think for yourself.
The beginning was Paul declaring Jews can be saved, God’s not wiping his hands clean though they rejected Christ. Paul himself a Jew was able to be saved and be Christian by believing in Christ.
Paul then explains it isn’t the Gentiles only way either, don’t be boasting. Judaism (roots/base) was belief of Jesus coming. Once Jesus came he fulfilled Judaism. Thus Jews have to believe in Christ or broken off. Grafted in Christians must believe Commandments and understand teachings of God of Judaism that brought Christ.
Those that believe in Christ and keep commandments is Israel as the deliver, Jesus, came from Zion, and washed all sin away.
Paul clearly is teaching in this whole chapter Judaism provided Christ, the only way to eternal salvation. The mystery of how Gentiles are grafted in and why stubborn Jews will be broke off. Gentiles found it mysterious the deliverer Christ died for them too and why the Jew didn’t accept him. Paul, teaches the Gentiles. Paul is not prophesying. Open your eyes. .
