It Begins: Bachmann, Perry at Same Iowa Event

Republican presidential candidates Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry are both campaigning in Iowa Sunday, the same day former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty dropped out of the GOP race. (Reuters)
AMES, Iowa (AP) — It might be a preview of the months ahead in the GOP presidential race. Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who just got into the race, and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, fresh off an Iowa straw poll victory, were competing for attention Sunday as their campaign schedules put them at the same event.
Both have the backing of tea partyers and evangelical conservatives. Both already are making big plays for those two important constituencies in Iowa.
Perry was making his first campaign visit to Iowa since announcing his candidacy Saturday in South Carolina in a speech that emphasized his economic credentials and Texas’ job growth, as well as his conservative stances on social issues and his faith.
The chairman of the Republican Governors Association, he’s an establishment candidate who could be an attractive candidate for economic conservatives in this lead-off caucus state who are looking for a candidate to rally around. Enthusiasm for the GOP national front-runner, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, and his strong economic message has been muted.
Bachmann, who has risen in Iowa polls since entering the race this summer, was reveling in her first-place finish in the test vote Saturday that proved her campaign has the organizational skills and volunteer network needed to compete strongly in the state’s caucuses next winter.
“We see this as just the very first step in a very long race,” Bachmann said on NBC’s “Meet the Press. “There’s a lot of work to be done.”
A candidate backed largely by the grass-roots, she appeared on all the Sunday morning news programs as she worked to broaden her appeal and challenge rivals more linked to the establishment.
In the straw poll, Bachmann edged past Texas Rep. Ron Paul to win the vote – getting 4,823 votes, or 29 percent, to 4,671, or 28 percent, for Paul out of nearly 17,000 cast. But she trounced home-state rival Tim Pawlenty, a former Minnesota governor who had cast himself as an electable establishment choice but ended up drawing 2,293 votes, or 14 percent.
On Sunday, Pawlenty quit the race.
His exit means there’s now an available contingent of top GOP staff and consultants, including former state party chairman, former advisers to President George W. Bush and senior advisers to Mike Huckabee’s winning 2008 caucus campaign, including Sarah Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor’s daughter. Top legislators who had signed on to Pawlenty’s camp also now are free to rally behind other candidates.
It’s not yet clear the size of the electorate Pawlenty frees up. But it’s certain both Bachmann and Perry will try to go after his voters.
“I wish him well,” Bachmann said, quick to praise Pawlenty, perhaps mindful of the need to broaden her appeal and reach his backers. “He brought a really important voice into the race and I am grateful that he was in. He was really a very good competitor.”
Both Bachmann and Perry were scheduled to speak in a late-afternoon GOP fundraiser, the Black Hawk County GOP Lincoln Day Dinner in Waterloo.
It‘s Bachmann’s birthplace, a point she has stressed everywhere while campaigning for the leadoff caucuses, and she wasn’t willing to cede the spotlight to Perry. She changed her plans and decided to attend after Perry announced that he would make his Iowa debut at the event.
“I welcome anyone who’s coming into the race, and I think it will be good competition for everyone,” Bachmann said. “He’ll run his campaign, we’ll run ours, but we really look forward to that.”
She said she was confident that voters would choose her over him “because I have a demonstrated, proven record that I will fight for what people care about.”
Her straw poll victory is expected to give her a boost nationally, especially with fundraising. But it also makes her a target and comes with warnings. Only twice in the five straw polls since they were first held in 1980 has the winner gone on to capture the caucuses.
Romney won the straw poll four years ago, finished second in the caucuses and stumbled during the early primaries before quitting the 2008 race.
Just once did the straw poll winner take the GOP nomination. That was George W. Bush in 2000.

Can’t stomach Romney, Cain is a big blow hard, Paul is old and scary with his views on Iran and Israel, Huntsman is a sleeper, the 90′s called and wants Gingrich back, and thank the heavens Pawlenty woke up and left the building.

I agree with you.
It will be a Bachmann/Perry rivalry until the end, but I think Perry will ultimately get the nomination.
It would make sense for him to ask her to be his running mate and pull her voters over.

Report Post »Rick Perry’s Crony Capitalism Problem
Gov. Rick Perry’s presidential pitch goes something like this: During one of the worst recessions in American history, he’s kept his state “open for business.” In the last two years, Texas created over a quarter of a million jobs, meaning that the state’s 8% unemployment rate is substantially lower than the rest of the nation’s. The governor credits this exceptional growth to things like low taxes and tort reform.
It’s a strong message. But one of the governor’s signature economic development initiatives—the Texas Emerging Technology Fund—has lately raised serious questions among some conservatives…

Perry meh, not so interested in him but if he is Bachmann’s pick for VP…I’m in. Sort of like to see RP as VP. But so far I’m for Bachmann for president. One classy lady, with level headed responses. She says what she means and means what she says and knows how to negotiate to correct the rudder if need be…you gotta give a little to get the ship righted if we don’t win the Senate, and her logic is dead on. Props to Wallace for the apology.

This is the real story that the media is not and cannot report on. Here’s what Obama, Osama, Biden, Bin Laden, the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorists, and Sarah Palin had to do with the last election and the military’s overthrow of our government.

Palin needs to revert to a formalized drum beater role and be satisfied with a senior cabinet level post – Energy or the Interior. Keep her in the wings for eight years after 2012. Sec of Labor would be highly entertaining but not for Labor.
Romney needs to go away, enjoy his millions and serve on blue ribbon committees as the need arises. He probably will drop out (during the convention) after a heart-to-heart with the RNC over who has a best chance of winning the presidency. Anyone who cannot admit failure (Mass healthcare) is not fit for the highest office in this land,
I’d like see John Bolton as Secretary of State after 2012. I think that would see countries who have been ripping us off for decades start to finally bend over and brag their ankles to keep the cash coming. Pakistan for starters.

And how many illegal aliens does your state have to deal with? (FEDS control the border not governors) they don’t usually qualify for “salaried” positions. We have multiple cases of communicable disease every year in part due to illegals bringing it with them across the border. We “force” our children to get vaccines against Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Chicken pox, Hepatitis a, b, c, Polio, etc so that when one of these illegal kids who is sick enters our school system the legal residents do not die. Preventing cervical cancer, which also runs rampant here, is just another on a long list. You can get wavers here on religious and medical grounds easily if you so wish.

I’m still withholding my thoughts on Perry as I check out some of the things that have come up recently about things he has said and done in the past. It will all depend on his overall record.
Of course everything is a mute point if Sarah Palin throws her hat in the ring. She knows how to “fight like a girl” and IMO has the best interest of the ppl of this country at heart.

Posted on August 14, 2011 at 2:46pmThe last Texas Governor that sat in the White House was a disaster in so many ways. He was sold to us as a conservative (after all, he’s from Texas!!). Rick Perry has much to prove.

Posted on August 14, 2011 at 2:41pmRon Paul for President. Perry was dealt a good hand being Texas. Bachmann sticks to her ground. As for getting things done it would be Santorum. The previous article-Allen West should be a military adviser not a congressman. Yes, Military needs to be cut also like other things. That is why I choose someone who will Cut Government. RON PAUL!!!

Posted on August 14, 2011 at 3:19pmhahaha.. all you Ron Paul zealots live in a fantasy world that will never exist. West is 100% correct! Paul would be just as dangerous in the WH as Obama is. Ignoring problems, like a 2 year old would do, doesn’t make them go away.

Posted on August 14, 2011 at 2:47pmHave you seen the reaction the people have everytime the “machine” opens its mouth to attack us? It always seems to add to our numbers and strengthen our resolve. They aren’t attacking a candidate or a conservative principle. They are attacking the majority of the American people. And the people are able to see it for what it is.

Posted on August 14, 2011 at 2:56pmObamas personal approval ratings are below 50% in ultra liberal New York. That speaks volumes. And if can down to just money then Huntsman, being a billionaire, would be the winner and no need having an election by your thinking. so I hope Obama has picked a country to retire in because he WILL be a ONE TERM POS ,,, er, I mean POTUS.

Posted on August 14, 2011 at 2:46pmI think you overestimate her ability to gather support now that others are in the race. What does she bring that others do not? Michelle has taken her Tea Party woman place and Perry can steal her Conservative Governor title. Only if both Bachmann and Perry remain unable to top Romney do I see her entering.
