Once-Homeless Teen Headed to Harvard After Working as a Janitor to Get Ahead: ‘It Depends on You and No One Else’

In today’s bleak economy, it is good to remember that there are still countless energetic youths in America who will work hard and sacrifice to achieve their dreams.  In this so-called “rags-to-riches” tale, the once-homeless 18-year old Dawn Loggins has been accepted to Harvard University on a partial scholarship after, among other things, working as a janitor and taking night classes to get ahead.

“When I was younger, I looked around at my family and I saw the neglect, the drug abuse, the bad choices and I saw my family living from paycheck to paycheck, and I just made a decision that I was not going to end up like my parents,” she told WBTV.

When she was living with her grandmother as a child, she explained: “There was trash all over the house…She never really explained to me like that it was important to shower, it was important to take care of yourself. So I would go months at a time without showering. I would wear the same dress to school for months at a time.”

Everyone at school made fun of her, she said, to the point where she would just go home and cry.

But thankfully, thanks to Loggins‘ own ambition and the community’s encouragement, her story did not end there.

“If there is anybody at all who has a dream, then they can definitely make it happen,” she said.  “There are no excuses. It depends on you and no one else.”

(Related: ‘The Life of Julia’ — A.K.A., How Not To Live)

She continued: “There would be times we went without power or water for months at a time…[but] I remember doing my homework by candlelight ‘cause I am that determined to succeed.”

According to the Daily Mail, the school‘s guidance counselor Robyn Putnam saw Loggins’ true potential and took her shopping, remarking: “Do you like it?  Will you wear it?  Then put it in the cart.”

The local dentist also gave her a toothbrush and toothpaste, and now the whole community has pitched in to get Loggins ready for Harvard. She has “new purple pillowcases, sheets, a mini-refrigerator and a desk lamp,” according to the Shelby Star.

“Dear Ms. Loggins,” the Harvard acceptance letter read, “I am delighted to report that the Admissions Committee has asked me to inform you that you will be admitted to the Harvard College class of 2016…We send such an early positive indication only to outstanding applicants…”

Loggins’ father is currently being held in the Lincoln County Detention Center on a drug charge and could not be reached by his daughter, but her brother remarked that she never should have doubted herself.  Her grandmother reportedly screamed through the phone upon hearing the news.

Even Huffington Post commenters seem to have warmed to the girl and her story, one remarking:

“She had [help] along the way from other caring people, not some govt. program. She had the will and desire to HELP herself. Working as a janitor, nothing was beneath her dignity as some of these people seem to think, in order for her to achieve her goals. Congratulations to her!  She is already an American success story and an example that no obstacle is to great to conquer.  No Excuses.”

One of my very first jobs, was as a department store janitor.
Janitors really deserve tips, more so than any waiter or waitress.

No job humbles you more than plunging a stinking poop filled and used toilet paper clogged toilet, and cleaning poop off of walls.
Yes, I said walls. I always wondered how the H*LL people managed to poop all over the walls. Believe it or not, this was mostly a problem in the women’s bathroom.

The men’s bathroom floors were usually practically flooded with pee. Hey guys, if you can’t accurately hit that huge porcelain opening, sit down when you pee.

What about those that it didn’t work out for? I know a woman who dropped out of high school to get married. When her husband died she went back to school and got her GED. Then she went to college and did well enough to get a special award. She spent the rest of her career working in the same furniture store she was working before she went back to school. And I’m sure she had loans to pay. Let’s not forget those who found college to be a waste of time and money. Let’s see if it pays off for her. Good luck.

If she were black like Barrack and Mechelle Obama or any other black this women would have gotten a free ride to Harvard. White babies are not born with their names on college seats of their choosing. I also had to scrub floors while in college while the blacks were riding for free. In my private sector jobs, I worked hard and blacks had assistance to help do their job while they concentrated on meetings.

College is a waste of time and money ONLY if you make it so.

If you’re friend never progressed beyond her original position, she has only herself to blame. That may sound cruel, but people’s biggest barriers often are themselves.

Who told you life was fair? I‘m probably older than you and I was taught many times that life isn’t fair. Just because you finish college doesn’t guarantee you anything. What was your friends Major? You know how many useless degrees their are? This girl pulled herself out of a pool of filth and kicked ass. She is what the American dream really is. She recognized her condition, selected an intelligent path to go down, and decided NOTHING would stop her. Bless her heart. Why do you have to sit on your computer and whine about such an inspirational story? No excuses! That is what your alleged friend should have put in her heart so she didn’t move on.

“You, sir, are a nattering nabob of negativism.”

      Brilliant! Just loved it.

This girl is going to go far. I don’t know what she will end up doing, but she will be great.

Incidentally, Jim Carrey did exactly that (janitor) when he was in his early teens. And Sean Hannity was in a similar position. I could go on and on with examples, but I won’t bore you.

You know, these people’s stories should be collated into some sort of manual for teenagers to read. I would certainly buy one if it were.

The perfect antidote to the “nattering nabobs of negativism” that populate the “occupy” sites. (Love it. Gonna steal it. Sorry.)

College didn’t work out for me. I went right after high school for a year. Then I tried to go back a few years later after I had 2 kids. I had to face the fact, that it just wasn’t for me. But instead of waitressing the rest of my life, I got an experienced dog groomer to teach me, while I took a coorespondence course. After 7 years of working for a vet I have had my own business for 2 years now. While I’m not rich, I’m comfortable, and working for myself. There‘s always other options out there if it doesn’t work out. I have to agree most people’s obstacles in life are themselves!

I would hope that anyone who went to college and graduated did not find it a waste of time. College never guaranteed anyone a job, career, or wealth. College guarantees to try and educate and expand your mind. With it you have a better chance of landing a career you like but the motivation still has to come from the individual. I found that college enriched my life but it is up to me to use the knowledge to enrich my wallet (if in fact that is the goal). One thing I know for certain, no one can take that education away from me. That hard work was mine and mine alone. I may not be rich but I’ll give 2:1 odds that am more prepared to live and succeed in this world than anyone without my education.

I hope you are suggesting that she could have saved her time and just been content to work at the furniture store. I think your person you cite is the exception rather than the rule. It has been my experience that people who strive usually succeed. If one used your example, no one would try out for the varsity since it is possible they might just have to be the water boy anyway. I have supervised many people and I guarantee that those who worked harder got more raises and more advancemet. Of course, too many young people do not pursue education majors that help in careers. There are too many throw away classes where one can just show up and get an A.

Ramond, maybe it was the progressive liberal education she got that ulltimatly disempowered her, being taught to learn instead of think for example, or perhaps she just lost her dream. Maybe, she never had a dream. It sometimes is a difficult process for some to find one’s true passion and essence. That ability and process as been weened from us since the early 1900′s by progressives. (this is a historical fact) Those who make it all the way, were somehow incourage by the natural survival process of responding differently that ultamatly lead to becoming fully conscious beings. This is something that progressives fear the most. They themselves do not posess that ability.

In my previous job ( I have since retired) I always treated the Janitors, and riggers, and iron workers with respect. Many fellow co-workers scoffed. I never understood scoffing at good, honest work (much harder that what I was doing!) I have seen Janitors finish college and become respected engineers and more. Honest people do what they have to, to get ahead and succeed in this all too short a life. Bless all the Janitors and helpers carrying tool bags for journeymen. They are the children of Heaven.

    Dear Ms. Loggins,

Way to go. Put your boots on every morning and put one foot in front of the other and you’ll be fine.

    Typical neo-liberal ********.

What the hell are you even talking about? Are you miffed that someone actually pointed out, which should be obvious to anyone with a brain, that it IS possible to actually, GASP, succeed without gov’t “help”?

Possible for SOME–that’s exactly my point. More power to her for doing what she can to improve her situation, but if this becomes an excuse to IGNORE the very real obstacles to people that prevent equitable opportunities for success based SOLELY upon personal merit, then I am opposed to such a narrative. The fact of the matter is that in the status quo, not ALL individuals are endowed with equal opportunities to succeed.

My question is: Will she get her individualism proffed out of her? Will she be convinced to give what she works for to OWS. Who will attempt to destroy this girls mind and ambition? They are there waiting. Maybe, just maybe she is smarter than they and able to allow their liberalism to roll offf her back like water on a ducks back. I do wish her the best. May she have Gods protection in all things that are done in Truth.

Good point – given the Far Left professors who infest so many of our institutions of higher Lefty Learning ! Have a feeling that this young lady learned from the school of experience so that she will be less likely than the naive “ good job for breathing ” middle class kids to be so brainwashed.
