‘It Seems Embarrassing’: Failed Doomsday Preacher Harold Camping Offers an Apology…Sort of

Harold Camping Speaks Out on Failed End of the World Predictions

Harold Camping made headlines throughout 2011. First, the famed radio broadcaster promised that the world would come to a chaotic end on May 21. When it didn’t, he then switched the date to October 21 (after all, miscalculations happen). Again — nothing.

According to CNN, when his latest prediction failed to come to fruition, Camping’s followers gathered for a Sunday fellowship meeting in Oakland, California. They questioned whether they had been left behind, according to Brandon Tauszik, a documentarian who has been attending meetings out of interest (he never believed the world was poised to end, though). Now his adherents know: They weren’t left behind; their leader was simply wrong once again.

“Numbers were a bit down, for the first time I had ever seen, but people showed up much like they did after May 21,” Tauszik said. “People were coming together, speaking outside, asking where we went wrong.”

Harold Camping Speaks Out on Failed End of the World Predictions

It has become painfully clear that Camping’s advice, at least when it comes to end times scenarios, isn’t reliable in the least. The 90-year-old, who suffered a stroke last year, took to the Family Radio web site to make a statement about his most recent doomsday failure.

“When it comes to trying to recognize the truth of prophecy, we’re finding that it is very, very difficult,” he said. “We’re ready to cry out and weep before God: `Oh Lord, you have the truth, we don’t have it.”‘

Camping also apologized for saying earlier this year that those who didn’t believe his prophesy — that the rapture would happen on May 21 — were probably not “saved.” Listen to the message here.

The Christian Post has the entire transcript. Here’s a portion of it:

We’re living in a day when one problem follows another. And when it comes to trying to recognize the truth of prophecy, we’re finding that it is very very difficult.

Why didn’t Christ return on Oct. 21? It seems embarrassing for Family Radio. But God was in charge of everything. We came to that conclusion after quite careful study of the Bible. He allowed everything to happen the way it did without correction. He could have stopped everything if He had wanted to.

I am very encouraged by letters that I have received and [am] receiving at this time concerning this matter. Amongst other things I have been checking my notes more carefully than ever. And I do find that there is other language in the Bible that we still have to look at very carefully and will impinge upon this question very definitely. And we should be very patient about this matter. At least in a minimal way we are learning to walk more and more humble before God. [...]

How wonderful to know that God is still on the throne, that He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords and that He hears every one of our prayers. And let’s not hesitate, let’s be, if anything, let‘s pray more than ever for God’s mercy, and keep praying and God will provide. But God is in charge, and we must always keep that in mind.

It should be noted that this is his third failed attempt at predicting the end of the world. Camping first promised that God’s wrath would strike on September 6, 1994, then waited nearly two decades to launch this year’s failed pledges.

Luckily, Family Radio has removed end times content and explanations of Camping’s predictions from its web site. Perhaps the now infamous preacher is done making predictions about the world’s end.

When will people stop teaching this idiotic rapture theory. it’s just about as dumb as saying you go to heaven when you die. it makes no sense and is completely contradictory to scripture. People just need to open the books for themselves and allow the Spirit to be exercised. Maybe then, God will open their eyes to the Truth.

AMOS37, I agree. No one will be “raptured” to avoid the troubled times. Also the idea that it will only be a seven year period is completely incorrect. The really bad stuff might take a “generation” to complete.

And as your name says “Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.”

If you read the entire chapter you will see that it is referring to those of us in the “latter days” that witness the so-called “beginnings of sorrows” (Mark 13:8.) So, if what we are seeing today qualifies as the beginnings of sorrows mentioned, then we are the generation that shall not pass ’till all these things be done.

Jesus wasn’t talking about the generation of those that he was talking to. He was speaking of the generation that sees the signs of the times just before His return.
      Read; Matthew 24:27-34, Mark 13:24-30, Luke 21:25-35.
ALSO NOTE that He says “AFTER THE TRIBULATION”… meaning that Christians will go through or be killed in the Tribulation…. there is no rapture.

Read and read carefully. As for the pastor, he should know that the scripture says that NO man will know the date only the Father. If you pick a date, you can be sure it’s wrong.

Johnny916 – I believe it’s referring to the “generation of the fig tree”. Israel became a nation in 1948 – alot of (us) Christians believe that the “last” generation is the generation born in/after 1948. The Bible speaks of three (3) different generation time frames: A 40 year, a 70 year and a 120 year. Using 1948 as a time mark, we’ve already passed the 40 year generation – that would have been 1988. The 70 year generation would be (1948 + 70) 2018. And a 120 year generation would be (1948 + 120) 2068.

Thus – alot of us believe that that part in the Bible is saying that the final day will be during one of those three years – since we’ve already passed the 40 year mark, that leaves us with the other two years, which is either 2018 or 2068.

Now – with that said – doing a lit’l math here – coupled with the current events of what’s going on – plus Bible prophecy – we have to keep in mind about the peace treaty that will be signed – between Israel and another nation. The Bible says that once that treaty is signed that will start the 7 year tribulation – and that half way through that 7 years (3.5 years) the ‘beast’ (satan via a man/group) will be revealed for what/who he truly is. And that all “hades”will break loose all over the world at that point.

Keep in mind – recent news – that the UN just made Palestine a recognizable nation – couple that with news that barry soetero was/is calling for Israel to give up land to the Palenstine people…..

“Doesn’t it say in the New testament that Jesus would return soon? Mar 13:30 Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done. What does this verse mean?”

That depends on your eschatology…. I consider myself a Historist, not a Preterist. However, when the lord said this what are we to think? Either he was wrong (not possible), he was using confusing language (saying “You” when he meant “them” and “This generation” when he meant “That generation”) or he meant exactly what he said and was referring not to an actual return to rule the world, but was rather refering to his return in judgment in AD70, when Jeruselem was destroyed by the Romans. This is the Historist view of his prophesy. The Futurist view (the more popular “left behind” model) insists on a leap of logic (he ment “them” not “You”) that I could never defend. This why I personally dropped the Futurist position years ago. It’s also important to remember that the Hebrew prophets often used language like this to communicate that God would be “coming” in judgement against Israel for turning from him and often used other peoples to do it (Babalon, Syria, Egypt and in this case Rome)
A great non-judgemental book on this issue is Revelation: Four Views by Steve Gregg. Look for it on Amazon, it is an excellent resource and takes no sides, but simply explains the four dominant positions.

@Russman – If you are talking about the passage as read in Luke. Please go back and read the preceding text Luke 21:5 And while some were speaking of the temple and how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings he said,…. It is quite clear that he was talking about the destruction of the temple of Israel which happened circa 70 AD within the life span of a generation that was already born when he was teaching. but like most of Jesus’s teachings it had dual purpose both in that time and in the time to come. You could read that to also mean that in the future all the signs and wonders talked about prior to his second comming will happen in a generation.

      @Navydoc
      Greetings Brother :)
Luke 21 or in Matt 24, I have the same problem with the leap that Jesus said one thing but meant another. I see no way to jump to the position that he meant two things. To be honest, it seems like nothing more than a thin excuse to explain why he didn’t return in the first century, that he MUST have meant something other than what he said. He could just have easily (and logically) been saying EXACTLY what he meant and been talking about the coming destruction of Judea , (which according to Josephus was horrifying,) and the coming persecutions of Nero. Sort of the same situations as Rev. 13:18, John gives the name and number of the second beast, and states that a wise person can calculate the name. Why would he tell the churches of Asia that if it weren’t true? That would be a cause of confusion also….. But.. If you take John’s statement at face value, and use 666 as the beast’s name, it translates gematrically as NeRON QeiSaR (Nero Ceasar) in Hebrew. In some early manuscripts the number is actually 616. The final N of NeRON is optional: the name can also be translated NeRO, subtracting the letter N [Nun] and its value of 50 to get — 616.
So… I still find myself in the position of not being able see that these passages mean more than they expessly state..
But, I don’t want to hijack a thread…. Thanks for the conversation Brother ;)

I personally think that we are that generation, and that some of us will remain until the rapture which is pre-trib (Luke 21:36) so says Jesus. Now as for the day and the hour, no man knows, however we are to be watching for something (a sign) as to the general time. I say, after much research, that only one thing stands between the Church and the rapture at this time of apostasy – the antichrist must be revealed (come into his time): “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling (apostasia) away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition (the antichrist).” (2 Thessalonians 2:3) Please, if you will, check out the book ‘The Great Dream’, available to read online at apostasynow.com, written by a good Friend and brother.

      Matthew 13:24 to 30:
” Jesus presented another parable to them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went away. But when the wheat sprouted and bore grain, then the tares became evident also. The slaves of the landowner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’ And he said to them, ‘An enemy has done this!’ The slaves said to him, ‘Do you want us, then, to go and gather them up?’ But he *said, ‘No; for while you are gathering up the tares, you may uproot the wheat with them. Allow both to grow together until the harvest; and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather up the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them up; but gather the wheat into my barn.”

NEWS FLASH: The mystery has been solved by studying the Bible of all things.
      2 Tim 4:3-4
      3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

For all of the preachers that can’t figure this out…. the rapture is a FABLE that was started by a young Scottish girls dream or vision.

@IMREDDOG – you must clarify between ‘secret rapture’ and ‘rapture’ – rapture is biblical – as in the case of Christ’s second coming when every eye will see him. The secret rapture is not biblical.

The ‘secret rapture’ people hang their belief on the Luke 17:30-36 verse – but you shouldn’t form a theology run with it based on 1 verse without further examination – people do – but you shouldn’t.

You should really learn what the Bible really says before you try to diminish it. God’s plan for humanity was the Garden of Eden. Man’s inability to follow a few simple rules brought about the end you describe. In His infinite mercy, He still provided a way for everyone to escape the end you describe. Furthermore, a murder is an unjust killing. When God destroys, it is just. He is incapable of injustice because His word is justice and truth.

God offers every person eternal life with Him. You can choose to accept or reject His offer. We will all suffer the “first death” which is like sleeping and we will all be awakened from this sleep. Those who accept God’s offer will never die again. Those who reject God’s offer will suffer a second death that they will never awaken from. Their souls will be consumed in the Lake of Fire. No one will ever remember them and it will be as though they never existed. If you don’t believe in God then that is your choice and it has no effect on anyone other than yourself. Please stop being so angry with God and those who believe in Him… this anger gains you nothing.

Bad news good news thingy! The bad news is the world will end one day. The good news is that it will be in about a billion years!

Shame on the board of directors for this ministry. The man clearly has dementia and should have been removed some time ago.

They have allowed him to make Family Radio a laughingstock – and negate any good being done. In addition, millions of dollars of donations have been wasted and many lives affected.

This shows very poor stewardship of money entrusted to them by well meaning folks to do the Lord’s work.

    Sad…

God’s people must require Camping and Family Radio return moneys wasted by their followers who supported the end times campaign. The fact that most of my church family still listen to Family Radio is wrong. There must be accountability, beginning with Robert Fitzpatrick of Staten Island. I believe anyone who still turns on Camping’s station or supports it in any way is an accomplice to his destructive teaching.

The Word of God, the Bible, says no man will know God’s timing….how hard is that to understand?

It’s not hard to understand! LOL He was just a crazy old man that thought this rule didn’t apply to him! LOL No one will know until “after” it happens, at which point it’s too late! I laugh at all these false prophets that think they are above God’s word!

I think this guy would have alot more peace if he simply said, “I don’t know”. Anyway, it quiets my mind.

Mathew 24:36 But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.
Don’t add to scripture, God doesn’t need your help.

You mean Christ God (the Son) does not know something? What happened to God being all knowing?

You can claim the rapture a theory, however, I always thought the spiritual connection between America and Israel was propaganda. Why does America (nation) fully support Israel? This question cannot be answered with the Bible (directly), yet, I read this blog: http://www.howieunveilsgodsshield.com/Blog.html?entry=the-root-the-branch-the and my spiritual eyes were open to the direct connection between America and Israel, and America is never mentioned within the Bible. The same is true with the rapture theory, the word rapture is not found within the scripture, however, teachings within the Bible call for “the catching away” “It is given unto man to die once then inherit the kingdom of heaven” yet two men never died, Enoch and Elijah. The two witnesses of Revelations chapter 11. The rapture theory is not a theory.
