It Spreads: 10,000 Take to the Street in Algeria

ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) — Thousands of people defied an official ban on demonstrations in the Algerian capital and gathered in the city center for an pro-reform protest on Saturday, the day after weeks of mass protests in Egypt succeeded in toppling the president.

Organizers of the march estimated some 10,000 people had flooded downtown Algiers, where they skirmished with riot police attempting to block off streets and disperse the crowd. Some arrests were reported.

Protesters chanted slogans including “No to the police state” and “Bouteflika out,” a reference to President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who has been in power since 1999.

Under the country’s long-standing state of emergency, protests are banned in Algiers, but the government’s repeated warnings for people to stay out of the streets apparently fell on deaf ears.

The march comes at a sensitive time in Algeria – just a day after the uprising in Egypt that forced Hosni Mubarak to abandon the presidency after 30 years. It also comes on the heels of a “people’s revolution” in neighboring Tunisia that pushed President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali into exile on Jan. 14.

The success of those uprisings looked bound to fuel the hopes of those seeking change in Algeria, though many in this conflict-scarred country fear any prospect of violence following the brutal insurgency by Islamist extremists in the 1990s that has left an estimated 200,000 dead.

Organized by the Coordination for Democratic Change in Algeria, an umbrella group of human rights activists, unionists, lawyers and others, Saturday‘s march was aimed at pressing for reforms to push Algeria toward democracy and didn’t include any specific call by organizers to oust Bouteflika.

The Egyptian, Algerian and so many countless countries have been on the streets for atleast 2 years and the Main Scream Media does not seem to report it . Take the day of April 6,2009 for example the Muslim Brotherhood got involved with the protesters in Menassat ,Egypt they called it a “stay at home day” strike. I did not see anyone mention this via the Media, now, the entrie world is yelling about the Muslim Brotherhood. If our Intelligence, which I believe has known about this ,I can know ,and they don’t??? Me thinks, there must be some odd reason behind this military coup in Cairo……

Algeria is smaller than Egypt, so how many protesters will it take to achieve the same result? 10,000 is not 250,000 but what is the ratio that makes this next domino topple. Time to pull out the Bible and reaquaint yourself with The Truth.

Unfortunately we have one of the weakest Administrations in US history at a critical time in history.
For only one opinion – I believe we will see world chaos, both economic and violence. What will develop out of this chaos is TBD. Hold to your faith, guns, food and gold.

The revolution spreads. But how come it only happens to our allies. Why not IRAN and SYRIA. Why?

    Because it weakens America?

Why did Obama support the protesters in Egypt and did not support the protesters in Iran?

Right now members of the Obama administration are calling the Iranian people to take to the streets. Too late. Seems to me it is just face saving or simply part of the Obama drama.

You raise an excellent question, but the president will not give you an honest answer. It all has to do with his anti-colonial beliefs that he got from his father and all his Marxist professors and his socialist buddies. To this day, no one knows if he entered college as an Indonesian student, if he took advantage of scholarships for foreign students, how well he did in his first college and how he got the money to transfer to Columbia or Harvard. There is so much we don’t know about the man, and he appears to love it. He apparently believes that America is rich and strong because we raped the third world. This is probably why he is praising the rioters in Egypt.

Any push back against them is always seen as racist because any decision to take any action against these people has to come from some sort of discriminating internal source even if it is from a place of rational thought for law and order for all across the board.

I’ll tell you this much, these people are sure good at what they do and the problem is there is no counter weight to stop it. PC will rule the day and that means nothing will be done to slow its advance throughout Europe.

First, President Mubarak’s resignation and his departure from Cairo do not mean that the Egyptian crisis is moving towards an early resolution. On the contrary, Mr Mubarak has simply dumped his dilemmas into the lap of the military top brass. Whether they can do a better job of dealing with them than he did – and whether the military can even retain its own cohesion – are far from certain. The success of ‘people power’ in Egypt has significance for the wider region.

Second, the success of ‘people power’ in Egypt is far more significant for Arabs everywhere than its success in Tunisia. Egypt is the biggest and most powerful Arab state. Mr Mubarak had ruled it for three decades. The Egyptian example has already electrified public opinion throughout a region where a similar set of ills – autocracy, corruption, unemployment, the dignity deficit – prevail. Autocrats whose security services are smaller and weaker than Egypt’s are more vulnerable to the chill wind of popular anger. Those with the money to buy off dissent are already trying to do so. Poorer states, such as Jordan and Yemen, will have to borrow in order to do so.

Third, the impact of the crisis on regional economies – in such obvious areas as oil prices, tourism, the ability to attract foreign investment – has already been severe.

Fourth, the fall of Mubarak will affect a host of regional issues – the Arab-Israeli peace process, the growing influence of Iran, the battle against Muslim extremism – in ways that are hard, if not impossible, to predict.

Fears of Islamic revolutions everywhere are misplaced. Most of the current dissent seems driven by nationalist rather than religious sentiment. In Egypt and elsewhere, the Islamists are jumping on a bandwagon others have set in motion.

There has been criticism of the US response to Egypt’s crisis. At the same time, fears that the crisis tilts the regional balance of power in favour of Iran are, for similar reasons, premature. Iran is watching these tumultuous events, not driving them.

Glenn has no more perspective on this complicated situation than a lone hiker in the wilderness has on the long range weather forecast based on his limited view of the sky through the canopy of leaves above his head. When Glenn claims that he does know how this complex situation will play out, it illustrates how arrogant, misguided and delusional he really is. All the chalk boards, flow charts and emotional excess in the world won’t change that simple fact.

If you are familiar with history you know the French revolution started in a very similar way and spread like an out of control virus. At the time, communication was piss poor in comparison to today.

The few fanning the flames of revolt were pleased with the results, generally speaking. Right up until they, too, were put to the guillotine.

As C.Krauthammer recently stated, and I paraphrase: ‘there is nothing more democratic than a lynch mob.’ The French Revolution proves him correct. Claims that revolution result in western style republican forms of democracy are foolish assumptions made by the ignorant. And history backs this up 100%.

Results from such activity are too difficult to predict the outcomes from because most often a leadership vacuum is the immediate result. And since no strong support base exists for (and has been illegal to formulate in Egypt) filling that vacuum chaos must accompany the movement, at least for a while.
The struggle for power and ascension begins.

yes i’m sure there are bad elements prodding the people into revolution, but ya gotta love the idea that the egyptians will now be able to determine their own future… i doubt egypt will become another iran…i sure hope not, because i’d like to visit there sometime..check out the pyramids… life goes on

The revolution coming to Europe? Really?
Come on people, you just CANT be that uninformed. I know you were fed with pictures of Greek extremists demonstrating and breaking some stuff, but that is how extreme it gets over there. At the moment nearly every european country believes itself to be a more evolved democracy than the us, and some might be right.
There is ZERO potential for any uprising in europe.

And to the people that generally think revolutions are a bad thing:
No human rights without the french revolution.
Oh, no US without a little revolution, dont you think?

Oh, btw, Glenn is a genius. About 5 hours a day he spouts conspiracy theories and total obvious truths at his audience. And then he uses all this random comments to “prove” he is always right later on. And you believe him. He is really good at what he does.

@ FOREIGNWATCHER…..Maybe you could inform all of us “stupid” people just exactly what Cameron, Merkel, and Sarkozy’s separate speeches about the dangers of multiculturalism in Europe and how it has failed was all about then???? Seems like they might be a smidgen less optimistic then you seem to be.
