‘It Was the Democrats’: Jobs Advocate Shocks Ed Schultz With Unemployment Theory

Ed Schultz isn’t usually at a loss for words. But he was flummoxed when a guest on his show last night blamed Democrats for not extending jobless benefits, instead of pinning the issue on Republicans as Schultz tried to encourage her to do.
NewsBusters’s Noel Sheppard sets up the clip:
Mignon Veasley-Fields is a 61-year-old Los Angeles grandmother who has been out of work since June 2008. Her unemployment benefits ran out over three months ago.
Since then, she has been bringing attention to the long-term unemployed in this nation referred to as “99ers” signifying the number of weeks they received benefits before they stopped.
In recent weeks, a new group has emerged called the 99er NOVOs: they are so angered by Washington that they are refusing to vote in the upcoming elections.
Schultz began pleading with Veasley-Fields to encourage her group to vote for Democrats and “save the majority” because “President Obama deserves to work with the majority for another 24 months.”
Veasley-Fields wasn’t having any of it, and gives Schultz a history lesson in the process:

Posted on October 1, 2010 at 10:44amHow can anyone refer to themselves as a “99-er” ? They should embrace the tea party goals and the economy will “IMMEDIATELY” take care of itself. The jobs will take care of everything…….why can’t they see the BIG picture here ? Pelosi, Reid, Obama and Company WANT strife, poverty and dependence on government. It is a blatant, willful attack on our free market which translates to economic disaster that we see currently. It is contrived…..they don’t get it…. And Obama ? One of the most sheilded, coddled politicians of our time. He has nothing in common with economically challenged individuals at all. He is an Alinsky-ite……..plain and simple….

Report Post »slickmeister
Posted on October 1, 2010 at 10:47amExactly.
When “progressives” began their social engineering programs that destroyed the family structure in inner city neighborhoods back in the 60s, 70% of all black children had fathers present in the home.
Today, after the “compassion” of liberals, OVER 70% of black children are born out of wedlock. THIS is the legacy of LBJ and his moronic “war on poverty”. What he actually waged was a war on the family, individual liberty and prosperity.

I wholehearteldy agree with that statement. There are people who honestly NEED government assitance (disabled) and those may need it FOR A TIME. Too many people think of “US” as their employers and it is pathetic! Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
It is like my son sitting on the sofa playing video games instead of going out to mow the lawn to get $20 bucks. I then go out to mow for him and then come in and pay him $10 for playing the video games!!! That is the mindset of too many people. They are happy living with the status quo instead of trying harder to make a better life for themselves.

Than you have those who were getting ready to retire or semi-retire.. they have to be careful of what job they take as it will effect their SS.. BTW: the LAST thing they want to hear is SS is a ENTITLEMENT.. it is money the government has been taking regardless of if you wanted them to do so.. for someones ENTIRE working years.. it would be like the BANKS stealing your SAVINGS.. also an EQUAL amount was paid to SS by their employers.. so it’s like Banks stealing your SAVINGS DOUBLED.. We wouldn‘t allow banks to d that the GOVERNMENT wouldn’t allow them to therefore the GOVERNMENT can’t just STEAL the money from the people.. There are a lot of factors in someone being laid off.. Best thing you can do is IF your still working GET ON YOUR KNEES and THANK GOD and PRAY your job isn’t next.than pack up a bag of food and walk over to a neighbor that is out of work and leave it on their pouch.. The only jobs seemly secure are GOVERNMENT jobs.. WHICH BTW.. come with large pensions that YOU are paying for.. it’s the private sector worker that is hurting..

Posted on October 1, 2010 at 11:41ambrokor, I get really sick and tired of hearing this. My husband was unemployed 11 months ago. He went from making $75K a year to $400 a week. We lost both of our cars, moved into a cheap house (we didn’t own a house, thank God–we rented), took our kids out of private school, forced onto assistance for the first time. You’re asking us, who are barely scraping by on $400 a week (after losing everything that we owned), to instead apply at Walmart and live on $250 a week? With five kids? That’s just not possible. And for your information, he actually applied at Walmart for a managerial position (which would have been a decent salary, much more than unemployment pays), and was told that he was “over qualified.” They took someone else. He’s had countless interviews and they always go with someone else. Which considering that the statistics now say that for every job available, there are 6.5 people applying for it, doesn’t surprise me. You are asking people who are not used to struggling, and are now struggling just to survive, to give up what little they have and struggle with even less…? You act as if the VICTIMS of government gone crazy are enjoying losing everything that they worked for just so they can sit around on their “lazy” butts and collect their measly $400 a week. You act as if there are jobs everywhere, equitable jobs, and they’re just not looking hard enough.

Posted on October 1, 2010 at 12:48pmWhen I saw your post it made me very mad. Now I have not been unemployed as long as this poor lady. But I have been unemployed for over 3 mo now. And yes I can get a job at McDonalds or Wal-Mart but the problem with that is most of those jobs are part time and even if they were 40 hrs a week you still cannot support a family on that. I don’t have any car pmts; I don’t have cable or sat. I live in a very modest house. Even with bare bones we could not live on what these jobs pay. I had a good paying job. And even with that we were living a modest life. We could make ends meet and go out to dinner once in a while or pay for the piano lessons. To make the same amount that I was making before I would have to work 120-140 hours a week depending on the wage. So how dare you say if she would spend the time looking for a job instead of whining? Yea there are jobs out there but nothing I can support a family on cause I would still have to be on welfare as well. So either way I get money on unemployment or welfare. I think the problem is this 1st the union CWA allowed the company that I work for hire newer employees at over half of what I and other were paid. Then the company fired me cause why pay me when they could get someone to do the job for over half. Yea they could do the job. But the quality of work was not the same. The second issue is companies if they would pay the upper management less that they could pay the people more. I know that upper management has a hard job and yes they should be, paid more but when they are making millions that to me is excessive. to give you an example The president of the company I was working for had a perk that he could use the company jet to fly is daughter back and forth for school each weekend from back east to Colorado. That to me that is excessive. Even if they paid for 1st class ticket on a commercial air line it would be way cheaper than using the company jet. I dont understand why this guy was making million that he could not pay for his own daugher to come home every weekend. SO the point to this is unless you been there you have no right. We want the job that can support a family and still have time to spend with that family.

Posted on October 1, 2010 at 1:25pmAs someone who was unemployed for a year over two years ago, I think having my unemployment benefits run out was one of the best things to happen to me.
1. I changed my expectations. I stopped looking for full-time with benefits job like family and friends kept advising me to do.
2. I changed my thinking. I stopped thinking that a job would just come to me. As the benefits ran out, I took some of that cash and actually enrolled in a paid service to find a job.
3. I also changed my employment attitude. If no one was going to hire me, then I would use my skills and create my own job.
By the way, as I took some more of that last little of benefits and registered with the city/state to start my own business (I was figuring that I would start with jobs that I had the tools for and work up from there reinvesting in my business) I actually got a job offer from a company that I had applied to but not for the job they had rejected me. It was temp work, without benefits. I took the contract and traveled a lot so it was hard to build my own business. I went from one contract to another for that company for a year before I found another job that was a permanent position–in fact, they already were planning to use me on the next temporary project (contract work) when I gave them notice that I was leaving for a permanent position elsewhere. However, those changes I experienced when the benefits ran out have stayed with me. I registered my own business again (I moved states…) and hope to build it now that I have a set schedule and don’t travel.
So, here’s a question I ask myself. My wife might not like it because it was tough when the benefits were ending. But the question is, “If the benefits had run out sooner, would I have made the changes sooner too? Would I have found my way back to employment sooner as a result?“ I think the answer is ”Yes, I would have made the changes sooner.”

You replied: “So, Qweeqwa, are you saying that the republicans’ inability to close the loophole that sent jobs overseas is WORSE than Obeyme taxing the hell out of America which freezes any job growth whatsoever?”
Obama is not “taxing the hell out of Americans.” I don’t know where you are getting your info from but it is not correct. Obama is for extending the Bush tax cuts for 97% of Americans it is only on the wealthiest 3% that he is not in favor of extending those cuts. You have to keep in mind that the Bush cuts were agreed on to expire at the end of 2010 when it was passed. Even if he was in favor of letting all the cuts expire he would only be honoring the agreement made by Repubs and Demos back when the cuts were first enacted.
But he is not doing that. 97% of Americans will keep the tax cuts. That is hardly “taxing the hell: out of Americans.
Of the wealthiest 3% of Americans whos tax cuts will expire less than 5% actual run businesses but that is even a stretch. These are not your mom and pop hardware stores down on the corner. No, these are firms like Price Waterhouse who rake in tens of Billions of revenue on annual basis. To suggest that these firms are “small business” is just a down right lie.
These cuts to the wealthiest are not going to create jobs. This is not my theory but we have hard economic data to prove that this is false. It is called the Bush Administrations economic record. What happened to all of those jobs that the so called “job creators” were supposed to produce? What happened to them? It did not happen. Under Bush, those tax cuts for the wealthiest 3% took us from record SURPLUSES and near full employment to record DEFICITS and near record unemployment levels. They worked real good didn’t they?
What happened to the deficit hawks on the Right? That is all I heard all summer long, can’t add one more dime to the deficit n o matter what. Cool. But extending tese cuts to the wealthiest 3% will add 3/4 of a TRILLION to the debt over the next 10 years if they are not offset by spending cuts. I am all for the spending cuts. Make the same amount in cuts then pass the cuts for the wealthiest 3%. As of now the republicans have not offered ONE SINGLE SPECIFIC proposal to cut spending. Not one. By the way, keep your hands off of my SS.
Why don’t you just come out and say that unless firms like Price Waterhouse get to keep their tax cuts you are against the middle class keeping theirs?
What do you have against the middle class?

I worked on my website, I started an ebay business, and I went to the flea market to hawk cheap jewelry, I looked for oppertunities, but I didnt try to get a job, I wanted to work on my own, well, I couldn‘t start a jewelry business that will thrive on it’s own with no resources, and didnt want to mortgage my future with a loan, so the busniness didn‘t work and ebay didn’t pull in enough money, so I applied at Walmart, got a job offer, and then right after that I got a much better job offer which I took. I would have worked at Walmart despite being very over-qualified, I didn’t consider it shameful, but if you don‘t try you won’t get anywhere. I bet that gal has had many job offers from liberal places, like unions or other orgs, but just turned them down. the type of people who have no moral problem with taking government money when they are out of work but ABLE to work are the problem with this this country. At least I tried to make something happen, even if it didn’t work out, and I have a clear concience about it.

I wonder if he gets that same feeling going up his leg that Matthews gets when Obama speaks??!! It’s really no big surprise that MSNBC is headed down the toilet with people like this spouting their left-wing garbage(again, not meaning to give garbage a bad name!)!

Posted on October 1, 2010 at 12:06pmTake notice liberals and independents, this is a demonstration showing that you do not realize what you have been culturally conditioned to accept. The “99ers,” they’re nothing more than a demographic to this advocate, this individual masquerading as a serious commentator, and even a journalist in some dreams. But when was the last time you heard a journalist pleading to a demographic to not just vote but who to vote for, and then why? When have you heard of a journalist denouncing an opposition party?
Journalists do not have opposition parties; that would make them advocates. We should make sure that we all understand that.
But this display, it must be said, is equal to the disgrace that much of our media engages in on a daily basis mixing advocacy with journalism, taking the sanctity of journalism as a constitutionally fortified tool of our democracy and using it as a political weapon. This commentator is an advocate of equal disgrace to the citizens that he attempts to influence as are the advocate journalists because they both measure their achievements by their gross manipulations of not merely one demographic but of all.
And then, be assured that this event is representative of the manipulation of all individuals, all the groups and demographics that comprise the coalition that is the Democratic Party. Democrat constituents, you have been told what to think so much and in such devious ways that this advocate, Mr. Shultz, he finds it hard to believe that a woman, an African American woman, almost a senior, actually figured out the truth about something; that the Democratic Party is built on a foundation of lies.
If you are a Democrat constituent, you may perhaps consider yourself a mere pawn on a strategy board that when you finish running your course of utility, you will be “at a loss.” It works on the same principles as your national health care plan. This advocate, he just puts that all on display so nicely, and then says, “I tried.”
You have “tried” what Mr. Shultz? Would you like to expand on that please? We would like to hear your commentary . . . .
