Scope of ‘Occupy’ Violence Stuns Italians

Italians Stunned By Occupy Riot

Horrified residents watched Rome burn Saturday after an off-shoot of Rome’s “Occupy Wall Street” protest turned violent. Italian riot police fired tear gas and water cannons after a group of violent protesters hijacked the demonstration against corporate greed. Rioters smashed bank windows, torched cars and hurled bottles. The European ‘occupy’-ers called themselves “the indigent.”

AP reports that heavy smoke billowed in downtown Rome as the small group broke away and wreaked havoc in streets close to the Colosseum and elsewhere in the city. Clad in black with their faces covered, protesters threw rocks, bottles and incendiary devices at banks and Rome police in riot gear according to AP. With clubs and hammers, they destroyed bank ATMs, set trash bins on fire and assaulted at least two news crews from Sky Italia. Protesters also stormed into a church, tore a crucifix off the wall and smashed a statue of the Virgin Mary. RT video of the of the chaotic scene that unfolded in Rome:

Riot police charged the protesters repeatedly, firing water cannons and tear gas. Around 70 people were injured, according to news reports, including one man who tried to stop the protesters from throwing bottles.

TV footage showed one young woman with blood covering her face, while the ANSA news agency said a man had lost two fingers when a firecracker exploded.

In the city’s St. John in Lateran square, police vans came under attack, with protesters hurling rocks and cobblestones and smashing the vehicles. Fleeing the violence, peaceful protesters stormed up the steps outside the Basilica, one of the oldest in Rome.

“People of Europe: Rise Up!” read one banner in Rome. Some activists turned against the violent group, trying to stop them and shouting “Enough!“ and ”Shame!”

Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno blamed the violence on “a few thousand thugs from all over Italy, and possibly from all over Europe, who infiltrated the demonstration.” Some Rome museums were forced to close down and at least one theater canceled a show.

Protesters also set fire to a building, causing the roof to collapse, reports said. The Defense Ministry denied reports it was one of its offices.

Premier Silvio Berlusconi called the violence a “worrying signal,“ and added that the perpetrators ”must be found and punished.”

Berlusconi barely survived a confidence vote Friday, with many questioning his leadership. Italy’s debt burden is second only to Greece in the 17-nation eurozone and the country is rapidly becoming a focus of concern in Europe’s debt crisis.

ANSA said four people from an anarchist group were arrested Saturday with helmets, anti-gas masks, clubs and hundreds of bottles in their car.

Rome’s mayor said Sunday that it could cost at least a euro1 million ($1.4 million) to recover from the havoc wreaked by rioters who smashed windows, tore up sidewalks and torched vehicles after breaking off from a peaceful protest. The estimate came as clean-up work continued in damaged neighborhoods, where many charred vehicles remained parked along the streets.

Reuters reports that the scale of destruction shocked many residents. Many Italians have questioned why police only arrested 12 of the violent demonstrators, according to Reuters:

“‘They must be condemned by everyone without reservation,’ Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said.

‘Yesterday we once again showed the world the anomaly of Italy and today, again, we have to feel shame,’ La Stampa newspaper said. Mayor Gianni Alemanno said the capital would long suffer the ;moral damage’ of the rampage.”

The New York Times writes that Saturday’s riots were the worst riots in Italy since the Group of Eight summit meeting in Genoa in 2001.

      Just take a trip to K-Mart, Wal-Mart, or the grocery store here in the US if you want to find the most slovenly people in the civilized world. You’re not going to see a woman going to the store wearing her pajama bottoms and flip-flops in Italy. You can fault them for some things, but hygiene and personal appearance isn’t one. I was always surprised to see people in Rome dressing to the nines just to go out for a coffee.

      There should be a VERY SERIOUS Congressional Investigation into George Soros. He has been funding this crap for a long time. Of course, under the Obamanation, that will not happen. The House may initiate it, but you can damn well bet that Harry Reid in the Senate and Obozo in the White House will stop it.       As Benjamin Franklin said after the Constitutional Convention of 1787, when asked what we had given the people, he said “A republic, if you can keep it.”

For the rest of the conservatives, britlynze was being sarcastic about how stupid the sheeple left are in thinking that mob rule democracy is the answer. From now on, when you see someone comment on the liberals doing something stupid as they usually do and make the statement, “this is what democracy looks like”, you will know they are mocking the liberal left and reminding them that democracy usually leads to mob rule and that is why our founding fathers wrote the constitution to make our country into a Republic.       Guess I didn’t say what I was trying to say well enough, JAYWIRE. I agree with you, that some of the rioters/demonstrators are talking and acting out what you might find in a country that is founded as a Democracy. However, as we now know, the rioters and demonstrators are carrying placards and signs that say they are Jew haters, Muslims, Jihadists, USA-haters, Socialists, union members, Communitists, Nazis, Fascists, etc. etc. And they have the public support of the USA President.

      I wasn’t sure from the original comment made by BRITLYNZ if she/he was inferring that the USA should be a Democracy, or even if she/he was inferring that she/he wrongly thinks the USA’s constitution is based upon a Democracy. A lot of conservatives wrongly call the USA a “Democracy.”

      I certainly agree with you, our Republic is being lost. If it weren’t for the current President who has proudly proclaimed his own hatred and disrespect of this Republic since the first day he was in office, there might be a chance to keep the Republic. But you and I both know bHo is fanning these flames in order to position himself to declare a national exigency and martial law (which will include the waiving of all current fed regulations and elections).

      I put up my upside-down U.S. flag earlier this year. What I thought then has now, in fact, come about.

      Thanks – hadn’t heard of those of whom you speak — but don’t worry, most Consvs./Christians believe and understand about it all being about God vs. satan — indeed, from day 1….well – sometime after that – ha! And it will be that way until the very end.

      I love the explanation that Jesus Himself gave us in Matt 14:37-49 . Talking about the good seed, (those who hear the Word of God and gladly receive it and bring forth good.) and the field (the world) where among the “Children of the Kingdom” an enemy came along (the devil) and sowed tares (thistles, or evil people), He says the “Harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers :the angels.     Occupy Wall Street Gone Global – How did this ever get started? Is it truly just the frustration of the people against what they perceive to be a greedy establishment or is it something more? I would assume that most of the protesters and those who support them are truly frustrated that they cannot achieve their dream of individual wealth and prosperity. In fact, if most were honest they would have to admit that they have followed the ways of the very establishment for which they now protest against. They have charged on credit the things they desire. They have coveted the material things that the world has to offer. They too are deeply in debt because they lived well beyond their means while relying on credit and the promise of a better future. So they protest against the fat cats, the bankers, and the rich while each of them would trade places with them in a heartbeat if given the opportunity. So they protest and garner the attention given to them by the media with a sincere hope that things will change in their own miserable unfulfilled lives.

      Of course the lives of the Protesters won’t change. I doubt they even expect it to. They just want somebody to blame in order to make their own lives seem important. It is the classic tug of war between good and evil. Those who know God, and those who don’t. This certainly isn’t the first time in history that this has come about. It won’t be the last either. America has suffered from too much Liberal/Progressivism for too long. Even George W. Bush was not a Conservative. Yet the Liberals hate him. What does that tell you? I don’t believe the things that are taking place mean it is time for the end. I believe our prayers have been answered, and all who feed at the trough of worldliness are showing themselves for who they really are, for the first time. This is a test. If there are more who will reject Liberal/Communistic/Progressiveism, then the world will go on. Otherwise, it’s over. That’s an over simplification of what I believe. No one knows for sure.

      Your attempt at sarcasm is not funny. Glenn Beck has not been reporting, or even predicting these kinds of riots, he has been actively hoping for and working toward them. This violence is his meal ticket. The more, the bloodier they are, the harder Beck laughs all the to the bank. His product is panic and civil unrest and he’s selling it better then B.T. Barnum. Sadly.

      If you haven’t noticed the military is pre-occupied and perpetually locked out the US. Just like the Romans kept the legions out to prevent them from interfering. Most in the military will do as ordered and round up “terrorists” or launch missiles at them/us.

      Something that has always amazed me is how even the conservatives (other than Beck) never give Glenn the credit for digging up the facts. It is like they are on a three week delay on the info and then suddenly discovered it instead of Beck and his fantastic staff. They allow him and his staff to do the work and they take the glory for it.Other than O’Reily no one even mentions Becks name. Say what you want about Bill but he opens the door for debate and allows Becks voice to continue on the regular media. I think Bill agrees with Beck more than we think and proves so by giving Beck airtime.He has to remain fair and balanced to keep FOX on the air, but does give Beck a venue to reach the O”Reily audience and Beck’s supporters.

    Not enough normal people speak out. Thank God for the folks that at least research and look to the future to bring those of us information that only a full time workers can bring, Glen Beck thank you. I do research and attempt to obtain as much information as possible, I work full time and have a new baby but am able to squeeze in enough to prepare. Americans please involve as many people as you can so we can drown out these loons. They are dangerous, I read “demonic” what a great insight, this is one reason why I understand these MOBSTERS thats what they are, and sheep. Lock and load so your ready but lets all try to inform each other and stand up for whats right.

      In a related story, that wing nut Geraldo rivera is a lefty loon as well with his gangster peace sign thing he does, he’s as rich as anyone these fruit cakes are protesting. glen is right the sad part is we will probably never get to se geraldo eat his words as the Government will be implementing marshall law and the tv and radio, internet etc, will all be obummer propaganda.

      I agree with your post about Glenn being a modern day prophet. I also wonder when he wrote down things we need to do in order to survive this crisis ( Thursday’s show ), that perhaps he got them straight from God. Call me crazy, but the more I hear about his predictions, the more I believe him. Now, if I can only convince my brothers ans sisters in my immediate family!
