‘It’s a Bummer’: Colorado‘s ’Falling Bear’ Dead After Getting Struck by Car

Its a Bummer: Colorados Falling Bear Dead After Getting Struck by Car

Andy Duann/CU Independent

The 280-pound black bear whose tranquilized fall from a tree was memorialized in an unforgettable photo last week is dead after being hit by a car, authorities said.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials said the bear was first struck about 5:40 a.m. Thursday. A spokeswoman told the Daily Camera it was positively identified by an ear tag as the same animal tranquilized April 26 and relocated to a wilderness area.

“It’s a bummer. It’s so hard to go through this and not be able to give these bears a good place to live,” Jennifer Churchill told the newspaper. “The community sees relocating bears as a kind of perfect solution, and unfortunately it’s a really difficult proposition.”

Police said two cars were involved in the accident, resulting in minor injuries for one driver.

I love all the Yogi stuff, and the narcotics one had me in tears!
But my land boarders on the National Forest. Lived here for 12 years now. And about the 2nd I noticed the bears here weren’t scared of people at all. They would walk right up on you! Not normal by any means!! A few years later I found that they were letting ( Problem Bears) out of the Smoky mountains loose behind my house in the National Forest!!!! They would come up on the deck and open trash cans and do what ever they liked! I’am very happy that they saved the tourists on the trails hiking the trouble of dealing with the problem THEY created ! I have had to replace the siding on one side of my house because a bear got spooked by a dog and RAN into my house! Must have lost all his wild sense!
The state says it is a crime to kill them, so I don’t. I now have an 8 year old Bloodhound I got as a pup that hates them!! She keeps them far enough away that I let my kids play outside!
My point is if you wont let me shoot them, and they are killing my livestock ( and they have) .
Why shouldn’t the state at least pay for Vet bills and dog food ??? Sounds fair to me.
A 90lb dog eats a lot! 60lbs of dog food is about $20, My handloaded 45.70 rounds are about .80 cents a piece. Heck if they are a PROBLEM there , why are they not here? Nothing would be wasted.
I know folks that go to VA to hunt bears and pay out of state fee’s to do so.
My hound is getting old and dog food is expensive ! Hello PETA !!!!!

I have to laugh at this…

“We try to move bears more than 50 miles and also try to get them across a major river or highway so that there is a barrier to them heading right back to where they came from,” Randy Hampton,

I guess a highway isn’t so much a barrier, but the cars that will kill you.

Good job, maybe next time they will try the river.

Sorry that quote was from the original story when the bear was moved.

Additionally, I was doubtful that 50 miles would prevent the bear from returning.

However, I stand corrected. Apparently the highway did work in keeping him from returning. The highway provided high-speed vehicles which were used to strike and kill the bear in its attempt to return.

The meat winds up at the local county jail, and the rug winds up on the Sheriff’s floor.
Hunting bears with cars, those whacky Colorado folks. Whew.

Who let Charlie Sheen back on the road?

Bear in mind, now that the state introduced the poor animal to narcotics, it was simply hanging out on the road, trying to turn tricks for his next fix. I blame this solely at the feet of the state. They should have just hauled it off to the circus and been done with it.

    In other news…..Boo Boo mourns.

Guess he wasn’t smarter than the average bear to not know how to look both ways before crossing the street. Always know your bearings.

Sadly this reminds me when a few harbour seals were humanly brought back from the jaws of death only to be released in a harbour with great fan fare and a pod of Orcinus Orcas gobbled them up. Life is fun with it’s daily twists and turns …….
