‘It’s Colorful and Innocent’: Guys Who Like ‘My Little Pony’ Turn Out for…‘BronyCon’

BronyCon

AP

SECAUCUS, N.J. (AP) — Dale Fjordbotten is a proud “My Little Pony” fan, with the shiny blue body suit and yellow lightning bolt, blue wings and blue tail to prove it.

Like many “Bronies” – boys and men who like the cartoon “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic”- the 25-year-old college student turned out over the weekend for “BronyCon Summer 2012” at the Meadowlands Exposition Center, which drew 4,000 men, women, boys and girls, many in colorful wigs and costumes.

“I thought about what people would say. `It’s creepy. It’s weird. It’s a … show for little girls,’” said Fjordbotten, from Staten Island, N.Y. “It’s just a great show … the story line, the plot, the beautiful animation.”

Bronies say they‘re a misunderstood lot who’ve gotten a bad rap from the media. They’re all about the show, friendship, love and tolerance, and they have no bad intentions, they say.

“I discovered that there’s nothing to be ashamed of being a Brony,” said 19-year-old James Penna of Mastic in Long Island, N.Y. “People are into what they’re into.”

Outside the convention center, young men danced and sang along with songs from My Little Pony cartoon that blasted from loud speakers as a video screen on a large truck showed the show’s characters. One observer said it almost felt like a Grateful Dead concert.

Inside, vendors sold stuffed ponies, pony accessories, pony signs, pony hats and just about every pony item imaginable. Stars who do the show’s voices signed autographs and gave speeches.

Staff appeared to be a little overwhelmed at times. It was just over a year ago when BronyCon attracted about 100 people to some meeting rooms in New York City. Now there are thousands of Bronies across the country.

Hasbro released the first My Little Pony toys in 1983, and they led to television specials, a film and the first TV series from 1986 to 1987.

The brand stuck around through the years. But along came animator Lauren Faust, who was hired by Hasbro and sparked new life to My Little Pony when she created the “Friendship is Magic” series.

Faust had worked on “The Powerpuff Girls” and “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends” before dreaming up the land of Equestria, where My Little Pony characters like Twilight Sparkle, Apple Jack, Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie get into all kinds of adventures.

Faust told The Associated Press at BronyCon on Saturday that she never imagined the show would be such a hit with teenage boys and young men. She said her main target was little girls, but she hoped to draw in moms and perhaps some boys with strong characters and compelling story lines.

“We live in a society where saying that something is for girls is the equivalent to saying that something is stupid, or saying that something isn’t worthwhile,” Faust said.

“I think that’s awful and I think that kind of attitude needs to be changed,” she said. “And these men are doing it. … They‘re proud that they’re forward-thinking and modern enough to look past this misogynistic attitude.”

Faust said she, like the Bronies, is disturbed at the negative images some people have about men who like the show.

“There are a lot of people who when they first hear about men watching a show for little girls, they’re taken to a creepy place,” she said. “They think there’s something wrong with that, something devious about it. I think that’s unfortunate.

“I don’t think you have to have bad intentions to like little girls or to like the things that they like,” Faust said. “And it’s upsetting to me that people jump to those conclusions. I think it‘s unfair to men and I think it’s unfair to girls and women.”

To set the record straight about Bronies, Faust, John de Lancie and others are producing a documentary that filmed over the weekend at BronyCon. De Lancie is the voice of Discord on “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic“ and is perhaps best known for playing ”Q“ on ”Star Trek: The Next Generation.”

Zac North traveled from his hometown of Dayton, Ohio, to be with fellow Bronies in New Jersey this weekend. He dressed as his favorite character, the antagonistic Discord, wearing a hooded and multicolored costume complete with a dragon tail, since Discord is a pony-dragon hybrid.

Why does he like the show?

“It’s colorful and innocent, which is something I don’t have in my life,” the 26-year-old Sam’s Club worker said. “I like the community away from the show.”

Twenty-year-old My Little Pony fan Gabby Pantaloni of Hershey, Pa., said she was kind of shocked that so many guys like the show, as she stood in a line at BronyCon to get her picture taken with other enthusiasts dressed like her favorite character Rarity.

“After watching the show, I could see why anyone of any age would like it,” she said. “I think it just makes us all feel like kids again. Some of us are afraid of growing up. We’re all just kids at heart.”

It’s actually a hilarious show. I am a libertarian homeschooling mother of five, four of whom are boys. My family loves watching the show together. It’s hilarious, well written and one of the few shows on that doesn’t contain questionable material. My boys are very masculine, they love camping, scouting, and shooting plus they will gladly say they are bronies, it’s harmless fun.

I think, at least with my experience with bronies, that the reason many people find it weird is because of the bronies that let it consume their life. I have played online games such as Team Fortress 2 with a girlfriend who was across the country for date nights and there were maps that bronies had created that had giant ponies running around. A close friend has told me there are some who draw very inappropriate pictures of the ponies in conversations we have had about them. The are men that allow it to take over and influence every aspect of their lives. Yes, there are strange and extream people in every group but it is those who get the limelight and therefore are what many think of.

@BRYANB Since Hasbro has decided not to be ****** about defending their intellectual property, there is a whole market of people who are making and selling My Little Pony toys. I would have thought Evil Conservatives would appreciate the entrepreneurial spirit in the brony community.

And yeah, the toys fetch decent cash on eBay. The current iteration of MLP is significantly different from the previous ones though, so they have a different fan base.

When my dad was in his 20s he was well through his doctorate to become one of the best know veterinarians on the west coast. While I cant measure up to their achievements, in my 20s I was working 2 jobs to support my family. None of the males in my bloodline ever had enough time to explore our femininity.

Yeah, I thought it was wierd watcing MLP:FIM, but started watching it on Netflix, just to get an dea of what was going on. I watched an episode here and there, and found it teaches what I’d call Christian values without being overtly religious. First of all, Thank you Madeleine Morgenstern for a fair article. I swear the only thing more biased against in the media than conservatism is liking my little pony!

Secondly, please Blaze readers dont take this at face value its not as weird as it seems at first, I for one am farther right than Glenn Beck, and I love this show! It is one of the few shows on T.V. without any political bias. There hasnt been one “green” of “liberal” episode yet!

Thirdly, the pictures i admit don’t look good, But judging this on people having a good time in costumes is NO DIFFERENT than anyone judging the T.E.A. party for a guy dressed as Benjamin Franklin.

Fourthly, I am a adamant follower of Jesus Christ! if i thought there was anything homosexual about it i would be the first to say bad things about it.

I am not asking anyone to watch it or like it, but please don’t call people gay or liberal for liking a wholesome family friendly show.

My son had an episode running on the computer while I was working nearby. It didn’t seem gay, it didn’t seem anti-family, it dealt with jealousy and poor sportsmanship and it wasn’t heavy handed. He said that he like the animation, which is why he started watching. The other day, we stopped at a store devoted to war card games (Dunegeons and Dragons, Catalana? and others) and they had MLP running on the big screen TV. I don‘t think he’d be interested in dressing up like some of these guys do, but I’d rather have him watching MLP over Family Guy or some other “cartoons” I could name.

I don’t care what any of you say I love this cartoon!!!! When i was little i loved playing with the toys and now I’m saving them for my daughter that I hope to have someday. It is an innocent show with no profanity and teaches good manners and what is right and what is wrong and teaches consequences for bad actions

……hmm…….maybe we should show a few episodes to the libs……maybe this is what it’ll take for them to learn that lying is…….OMG wrong!

I truly enjoy my little pony it’s one of those rare shows that me ,my wife and our daughter can agree on and enjoy together. If you’ve never seen it both seasons are available on netflix. You should see it before you cast judgment on those of us who call ourselves bronies.

Seeing as how I know adult men who watch the show, (I tried, I really did, then I gave up and resolved to accept my friends for the strangeness and love them anyways), it’s mainly due to nostalgia for a simpler, happier time. People like to lose themselves, want to lose themselves, in something like that. Plus, supposedly the writing is very witty. It’s escapism, how does that surprise anyone? In this case it was due to so many people dogging the show before it was released, and starting to watch it for the irony of enjoying something terrible, instead they found something that they liked with well developed characters that wasn’t filled with doom and gloom so common in this era. Frankly, if The Blaze and Glenn were to do something with the same ‘escapism’ feeling set in a positive light with well developed characters they would be able to easily reach this entire demographic without breaking a sweat.

Oh, and yes. I am a Christian Furry, that is how I know all about this.

@Doggy: I can’t tell if that is an insult or some arcane comment, frankly. I’m simply stating facts as known to me.

Everyone needs salvation, why not extend the hand to the disenfranchised? I just happen to like family movies and good books, many of those have talking funny animals. Considering a significant portion of the community of furries is perforated with damaged people who are desperately crying out for help it’s a rather rich field if you can talk to a person one on one.

I have a working knowledge of the Brony fandom through naturally listening to what my friends are interested in, even if I’m not necessarily interested in the same thing. Listening is a good trait for any Christian.

Oh come now. What is so wrong with guys liking a show that happens to have mostly female characters and pastel colors? The writing and plot are completely non-sexual.

I don’t blame you for reacting that way. But there’s nothing “messed up” about an adult enjoying the new My Little Pony cartoon. It’s an enjoyable show with well written characters, great animation, and fun storylines. Think of it like an adult enjoying a Pixar movie.

If you’re still skeptical, at the very least try an episode to see what all the ruckus is about. I’ll even share a link to make it easy for you.
