It‘s Not About ’Stuff‘ It’s About a ‘Mindset’: Beck and Panel Discuss Emergency Preparedness

Glenn Beck dedicated his Wednesday evening program to an in-depth discussion on emergency preparedness. Welcoming a panel of experts including Walt Mayfield of the Amateur Radio Relay League, Independence U.S.A.’s Frank Belcastro and survival podcaster Jack Spirko, Glenn tackled the core tenets of survivalism.

Storing at least 90-days worth of food in the event of an unexpected job loss is a good idea and place to start, according to Spirko. It is also an easy preparedness step that many people overlook. He also believes that if people are taught to look after themselves, they will be emboldened to resist increasing government intervention that seeks to take away more and more liberties each day.

(Related: Man Spends More Than $350K Preparing for the Apocalypse)

Among the many options open to people who are seeking to better prepare, the panel delved into the benefits of food insurance and the importance of sharing one’s personal experience with preparedness with others.

Belcastro said that preparedness is “not something that should be kept under wraps,” but instead shared as it helps to educate people and bring communities together.

Later on in the segment, Glenn hosted an emergency preparedness Q&A session between the panel and audience.

When asked what the “one thing is” that everyone needs to do to be prepared in the event of an unforeseen catastrophe, the answers ranged in response from stressing the importance of communication to suggesting that no one store their entire survival stockpile in one place.

Among the “must-haves,” according to the panel, are water, freeze-dried food with an extended shelf life and different locations in which to store these items.

It’s not about “stuff,” it’s a “mindset, knowledge and skill set.”

Glenn then shared his key piece of advice for those eager to learn how to prepare and survive.

“It’s why I moved to Texas,” he started. “To be surrounded by good, like-minded people.” Glenn stressed how vital it is to be with others who share similar goals, values and ideals, even if their opinions at times may differ from your own.

“We know we’re going from [and in] the right direction and that usually comes from a belief in God,” he explained.

Glenn said that everyone should start learning to prepare by obtaining a history book. Once read, he assured that a familiar set of patterns and solutions will be revealed, as it always has from time immemorial.

“You can take the Bible and take out the names, replace it with current names and you will see the patterns… including those of yourself.”

Can’t agree more!!! The only thing that drives me nuts is that most of this stuff is that they make it sound like you can’t prepare unless it “runs your life”. While I believe being prepared is best accomplished through living a lifestyle, there are ways to prepare even if you live in an apartment in New York city. That’s why I love the guidance from CategoryFive.org. They helped me figure out how I could GROW in my preparedness plan without making me feel overwhelmed and unqualified.

Agree. Prepping is like going on a diet that really works. A lifestyle change. Not big changes all at once, but like steering a ship, gradual, steady movements to get on the right path. There is a lot to do, but it can be done a step at a time.

    It’s all about mindset
    Part of a fable

There are 10 families living around a lake. They go to the lake everyday with their buckets and draw water out to survive.
One day a family digs a big trench and all the water empties towards his property. A little of the water spills on the property of the family on his left and the family on his right.
These neighbors say, when the other families without water want to build a dam so the lake is full again, ” No! The family that dug the trench just works harder than you!”

    You keys are the neighbors

No fellow infantrymen that I served with had that lack of preparedness mindset. We tried to be ready for anything and everything. I guess I took away more from my experience in Iraq in 03 than I thought. Remember this saying: Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Funny thing is, a catastrophe will be a liberal purge from this country, they will all panick starve and kill each other while we wait out the first 3 to 4 months of the major chaos safe with our food and supplies, by 6 months we can start to regroup, and rebuild and dispose of the millions of dead liberals who killed one another or just died waiting for their fair share of the Obama stash.

      Another reason to have guns….

If the country does fall into chaos, that may be the time that China, Russia and certain S American dictatorships will invade and take land and begin to steal resources, food, etc…. So you need to make sure you can defend against that as well, the moment we are weak, the masks of our “friends” from china and Russia will come off and they will strike at the opportunity without hesitation

    Gang, it’s not rocket surgery.

Those of us that live along the Gulf Coast know what it is like to be without power for weeks (sometimes months) after a major storm.

Non perishable food (canned or freeze dried)
Drinks (water, fruit juice, Gatorade, etc.)
Plain bleach (for purifying water & cleaning)
    Medical supplies (bandages, oinments, etc)
Heat source (fire wood, sterno, charcol)
    Light source (flashlights, kerosene lanterns)

We keep a minimum of 6 months worth on hand during hurrican season. It’s a way of life on the coast. Our part of the coast was hit by 6 hurricanes during the 04-05 season. Supply availability was minimal at best for most of the summer/fall of 05. Three counties here in NW Florida/SE Alabama were destroyed in the fall of 04 (Ivan). We were on generator power for a month; others 2 months or more. Of course you know about South MS & LA (Katrina).

    Just be prepared for whatever.

Lack of self sufficiency, should a disaster strike, is starvation. Did you even watch the videos? Been to the DHS website where they say you should have two weeks of water, food and batteries no matter where you live? Have you ever been snowed in for 8 days? Literally cannot leave the house except through a second story window?

And not very many people are talking about 2012 either. They’re talking about natural disasters, potential economic chaos, a riot in their city.

So you really think it’s “not possible” for a Tsunami to hit the West Coast, or a hurricane to tear up a large part of the country leaving people isolated for a week or more?

They did a war game back in 2010, where they posited what the DoD thought was a fairly realistic major hacking attack on the US by a rival country. They got all the former heads of major agencies and war-gamed it for hours.

Within 30 minutes of a major (MAJOR) cyber attack the country was basically paralyzed. Half the country had no electricity and the blackout was creeping west. Pipelines were shut down (natural gas) the internet was off, cell phones didn’t work nor did landlines. Radio stations without generators were off the air.

2 hours in and these people basically said that we’re screwed. We can deploy the military with emergency supplies to depots in cities, but with no juice to radio stations in many places communicating the location of aid was impossible. Radio stations that did have backup generators might be able to run a couple days at most. They’re professional analysis: panic and anarchy ensue; martial law.

Estimated time to effect repairs and get things back up and running? 3-16 weeks. Depending on how mean the hackers decided to be.

That’s DoD talking. Not me. It was on CNN.

I agree that we should treat others as we would like to be treated. Instead of a cave, I’m having my basement finished. Deep window wells for light. A seperate entrance on the side of the house. A kitchenette. Bathroom. 2 bedrooms. An under the porch cold storage and plenty of room for any other storage that we choose to have. Instead of having panic attacks about a catastrophe, try planning ahead by learning how to bottle things that you actually like. Start simple. Plan on sharing what you have. I plan on making beer bread and spreading it with homemade jam on the 1st day of a disaster. I have a wood burning stove in my basement and cast iron dutch ovens and skillets. People are welcome to warm themselves by my stove. Stay for some food and take a nap if needed. I do expect help cleaning up. We have had a local disaster recently. We had a house full of family staying here because our home stayed warm and we have extra food on hand at all times. Instead of people going to other family members homes, they chose to come here. They know they are welcome and we are prepared to be able to care for ourselves and others. We are taught to follow the example and teachings of Jesus. We are the ones who are blessed when we help others.

Quite frankly, I used to think this stuff was sort of nuts. Hoarding food? Water? Stabilized gas?

But recently I’ve actually started doing this, never even thought of it as “prepping” but more like “common sense”.

The whole thing started for me when I got to thinking about ammo. Some of you might remember that after Obama got elected ammo prices went through the roof and the stuff was scarce. I mean I just wanted to go target shooting with my rifles/shotguns and handguns and I couldn’t get ammo other than 12gauge turkey loads and that was on a good day.

So I started stockpiling ammo. Not for the apocalypse, but I bought what I could afford so that if I wanted to go shooting sometime I’d have whatever I needed for it and not have to wonder if wally world or the gun store had ammo. That sort of grew into a habit of stockpiling ammo. At first 500 rounds for each caliber, then 1000 then 2000… you get the idea.

Either way, this is a good idea as well. I’m glad that Glenn is trying to take some of the stigma out of it. What he says about the peace of mind it provides is certainly true.

One other thing that I personally would point out is tools. Get tools. For example, how long is that AR/deer rifle gonna last without any CLP? How long is that little bottle of CLP going to last if you actually need that rifle day to day?

When your generator/vehicle or whatever breaks, if you don‘t even have a screwdriver you’re up the creek.

Preparation is far more of a mindset that you would think. You store lots of stuff, but you have to be aware of what is happening before you need all of your stuff.

I see more of a need for food storage and preparedness on a personal and family level than I do on a regional or national level. I prepare for things like a job loss, sickness or accident rendering me incapable of working for a while, localized grid problems and such. My family can go easily 3 to six months without an income, and still make our bills and feed ourselves.

Situational awareness is the key. Know what is going on around you.

Preparedness – I don’t no if i missed it, or no one brought up the thought of medical supplies ? In most catastrophies , such supplies would be in high demand ! ( Here is a little hint i picked up from a very smart survivalist savey friend ) Medical supplies can be purchased for much cheaper than one would think by going to a farm and animal fleet type stores ! Most products come sterile and would be quite acceptible for human consumption ! Antibiotics , bandaging , etc. Fire extinguishers , sterno cans for cooking ! High in protein foods ,like cans of baked beans can support you quite efficiently! You also need protection, because the unprepared are going to want what you have! Firearms and especially ammo will be in high demand ! If you don,t have a firearm than you should arrange for protection with a friend who is armed ! Good luck , be aware and stay safe !!

The biggest threat to preppers isn’t doomsday or an economic collapse (even though it’s all possible). No, the biggest threat to preppers is the government. The government wants people dependent on them so everyone will follow what the government says. If the government says “jump” you say how high, because they are starving. If a collapse, giant solar flare, or other tragic event does occur, you will have our government harassing these preppers and even to the point of rounding them up. The biggest threat to preppers is the very government that is suppose to be protecting them.

Here’s a little piece of advice: you can catch a fish by reaching over the edge of a creek or river bank by putting your hand all the way to the bottom with the backside of your hand touching the bed; raise up your fingers upwards slightly sweeping your fingers back and forth while moving it toward and under the bank. Do it very slowly and with enough tries you will eventually feel the underside of a fish, then work forward to the gills grabbing it by the gills.
