How are people going to work — or not work — today with one of the most popular instant messaging services down? Google chat (also known as G-chat or G-talk) is having some technical difficulties this morning.
Twitter has been a flurry with people proclaiming the service is not working and wondering why. One has even said they wondered why they saw a “huge productivity jump today,” before they noticed the service was still down.

According to Tech2, Google confirmed they are aware of the service suffering an outage. Here’s what Google had to say:
“We’re aware of a problem with Google Talk affecting a majority of users. The affected users are able to access Google Talk, but are seeing error messages and/or other unexpected behavior.”
Google is expected to provide an update on the service soon. At the time of this posting, it appears that some functionality is slowly beginning to be restored. Stay tuned to this post for updated information.
In the mean time, how are people going to communicate? Will they use the slower version of chat also known as email, stop by each others desks or pick up the phone? Let us know in the comments if you a) see a jump in work productivity while the service is down or b) find yourself communicating the old-fashioned way with colleagues today.
Update: At 8:50 a.m. (EST) Google issued a statement saying its team was continuing to investigate the issue. It is planning another update with more information around 9:50 a.m.
At 10:50 a.m. Google announced service had been restored to some users. It said full resolution for all users was expected “in the near future.”
As of 11:50 a.m. Google announced that service should be restored for all users.

Posted on July 27, 2012 at 3:32amKnowing what invasive, violative SNOOPS the whole GOOGLE enterprise is, why would anyone want to use their “chat services”? Or for that matter, their g-mail service, Picasa, or google-search?
If people would boycott Google, those invasive creeps might start to respect our boundaries and privacy a little. But WHY SHOULD THEY, when people are dumb enough to let them prowl through and abuse every aspect of our online (and offline–with google streetview & earthview) life?!
There are plenty of alternatives to google for every one of the so-called “services” that google provides. Try bing or startpage as your browser, try fastmail or breakthru as your emailer; and who in heck even NEEDS an “instant messaging” or “chat” service? Try DIALING people on a telephone! (Then you’ll only have AT&T or Verizon, etc. violating your privacy!)
WISE UP, people.

I love Google apps at our business. Cheap fast good and easy to administer.
Perfect for our smaller needs.

Posted on July 26, 2012 at 9:30amThis is why Gtalk is just one of a minimum of four IM services I have up at any one time. If one of them goes down, I have three or more available as back ups. If two go down, I have two or more as backups.

Posted on July 26, 2012 at 9:18amGoogle, unfortunately, has become a pawn for the government. Their policy change a few months back basically amounts to “you have none”. Their policy change a month ago has banned firearms and related items from their google shopping network (and I believe there are plans to start removing organic pages that are indexed if they contain any of the “banned” information).
Be careful using any Google service, including chat, as they can track/record anything and everything you do if you are logged into one of their services.

Posted on July 26, 2012 at 9:07amThe public missing google chat is not anywhere near as bad as the NSA missing recording your chats. Just think of the missed juicy data that they would have recorded from you that they would be able to try to use against you in the future. Even these messages we place in the blaze are all being recorded by the feds. I use a proxy to [try to] mask my identity.
