Apple finally confirmed rumors of its next generation iPad and then some at its Wednesday event in San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
The iPad 3 will go on sale March 16 for as little as $499.
Before today’s announcement, rumors have been swirling for the last couple months about the iPad 3 and have included a faster processor, a sharper screen and an option for faster wireless broadband access, all of which was confirmed at the event.

Apple said the new display will be sharper than an HDTV. The company says it will show more saturated colors than previous models. Fox News reports Phil Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide marketing, as saying it is “incredible” that the 9.5-inch iPad will have more pixel density than a 1080p high-def living room TV and also a higher resolution than the screen he was presenting on.

The company said the iPad is powered by a new chip with four processing cores, for smoother graphics. Compared to the iPad 2, the new model features a higher-resolution camera on the back, similar to the one in the iPhone 4S.
Watch Schiller describe the display at the event:
“We are taking it to a whole new level and are redefining the category that Apple created with the original iPad,” Cook said at the event.
Apple also confirmed that the new model will come in a version that can use Verizon Wireless’ and AT&T Inc.’s “LTE” wireless broadband networks. This offer speeds that are faster than the “3G” networks used by previous iPads, and current iPhones.

In addition to announcing the iPad, Cook also spoke about what he calls the “post-PC era”, which includes tablets, smartphones and MP3 players. The iPad, iPhone and iPod account for 76 percent of Apple’s sales now.
“Apple is at the forefront of this revolution,” Cook said. “Apple has its feet fully planted in the post-PC future”

The iPad launch comes as Apple has reached a rare milestone: Last week, it was worth more than $500 billion. Only six other U.S. companies have been worth that much, and none have held that valuation for long. On Tuesday, Apple’s stock fell, bringing its market value down to $493 billion, but analysts believe the company is worth closer to $550 billion.
In other Apple news, Cook also announced upgrades to Apple TV and new iCloud capabilities at the event. Apple TV, a $99 set-top box that allows streaming of the Internet through your TV, will be upgraded to play movies in “1080p” format, which is the highest-resolution commonly used video standard. Before this upgrade it had a 720p max. iCloud will also now have the capability to store movies, meaning they will be accessible by other Apple devices via the Internet.

Posted on March 7, 2012 at 9:12pmThere is no new innovation coming from apple and they appear to have peaked. All they have done for the last few years is stir around technology that already exists and re-package it for gullible consumers. For example Android has had digital assistants for several years that do at least as good a job as Apple’s Siri and there is no innovation in faster processors or duplicating the quality of display seen in several competitors last year. Apple has reached the zenith of it’s development and the innovation is clearly to be found in the Android, RIM and MicroSoft labs now.

Posted on March 8, 2012 at 9:09amSEEKER you are absolutely right. Apple has done the most important part right – MARKETING. They have appealed to the desire of many people to become part of an elite group, to feel superior to someone else and to be a part of an exclusionary ‘club’. Remember the “Hi I‘m an apple and I’m a PC.” ad campaign? It was no mistake to cast the apple guy as the cool, hipster with the condescending attitude and the PC as a dumpy not too bright white guy. The message, clearly, in all apple advertising is “Join our club and be better than those stupid PC people.” Sadly, by employing ‘snob appeal’, apple has built an empire without technical innovation or new ideas ( the new Ipad is a perfect example of how apple takes existing technology, stirs it up and launches a product that is not particularly innovative). Snob appeal to those who want to feel superior works. But apple’s days at the top of the pile are ending as their products are not longer industry leaders.

Posted on March 8, 2012 at 5:02pmYou are correct sir. They didn’t even invent the tablet like they want to think they did. There was a Windows XP tablet out years before the iPad. Phones that can get apps and go on the internet? They didn’t look as nice or work as nice as the iPhone, but they were around years before it too. The only thing they’ve even done right in the last 10 years was creating a nice GUI for their mobile devices…and that was outdone by Google in a very short amount of time.

Posted on March 7, 2012 at 5:42pmAs an evil capitalist, I love my iPad2. I don‘t have any buyer’s remorse even with this new version. I am hardly ever without my iPad becasue it is so handy. I remember Steve Jobs explaining the first one and I kept thinking that I didn‘t need a bloated iPhone that couldn’t make calls. I was so wrong, Steve knew me better than I knew myself.

Being in the tech industry, I need to stay up on things but I only consider a purchase when I can justify it (and afford it… THAT is the sticking point these days).

Posted on March 7, 2012 at 5:50pmThe ‘80’s. Wow. Think that was before on line trading accounts, before the tech bubble. I know I would take profits. Taxes likely to go up substantially next year, AAPL not likely be able to blow out earnings next quarter.

Posted on March 7, 2012 at 3:56pmWhy is it that Apple can get away with being as rich and profitable as they are? I would guess that it‘s because the silly little OWS communists enjoy Apple’s various iGadgets. So they’re all ok with that portion of the 1% I suppose. Apple isn’t eeeeevil like all those other selfish, greedy corporations that make substantially less money.
As an aside, for a company that we’re all told is so incredibly innovative, they’ve sure been flogging that iHorse for a long time now. iPod, iPad, iPhone, iCloud…I wonder if Apple headquarters has iRestrooms and iOffices and an iLot filled with iSpots. I‘m surprised some budding young tech company hasn’t thought to name their stuff with a “j” like jPad and say “we’re a whole letter beyond Apple.“ This ”i” crap was cute a decade ago, now it’s iRritating.

Ya know, corporate greed blah blah blah…‘Doesn’t Apple make enough money’? Think Apple will give its profits to out of work Americans and foreclosure victims? But the idiot left will swallow this thing down with a smile….can you say hypocrites? I wonder how that new Apple factory in Detroit is doing..oh wait..never mind.

Why anyone would want a Facebook account is totally beyond me. Are you egotistical? Are you a moron who doesn’t know that anyone can get your info from Facebook? You must be. If you really believe Facebook is safe, you are really delusional. There are so many ways to get around their security, it is so pathetic. I am an I.T. person with a background in Programming and I DO NOT HAVE AN ACCOUNT and never have, BECAUSE I KNOW HOW EASY IT IS TO CRACK SOMEONE’S SECURE FACEBOOK PAGE – it is way too easy. Just search on the Internet and they will not only tell you how to do it simply, but will also provide you free tools to do so. Because I know programming, I NEVER USE GOOGLE (nothing Google owns or runs), FACEBOOK, MYSPACE, or any other SOCIAL NETWORK, like Twitter. THE SECURITY ISSUES SURROUNDING THESE ONLINE APPS AND SITE WOULD SHOCK YOU BECAUSE ***THEY ARE NOT SECURE***. They are lying to you. So, if you subscribe to any of these sites, you will get what’s coming to you sooner or later. UNSUBSCRIBE AND GET OFF NOW before our new Dictator Obama lets you know what he knows about you and your family.
MOST AMERICANS ARE SO GULLIBLE. I am warning you now, so don’t say no one told you.
ALSO, if you use those Windows desktop gadgets, BEWARE. As long as they are online on the web, your COMPUTER IS NOT SECURE. Gadgets provide a back door to intruders. THINK PEOPLE THINK.

By the way, if its so easy to hack into an account and gain personal information, why do you have an account with The Blaze? You don’t have a bank account accessible online do you? Dude, you can cancel every account you have and your personal info will still be accessible to hackers (e.g. government databases – e.g. anonymous).
By the way, if you’re so good, go ahead and hack into my Blaze account and reply to my reply with my account…
