It’s Official: Majority of Americans Are on Facebook

The dawn of the 21st century has bid farewell to pen and paper communications and opened the door to digital pokes, likes and status updates.

If you don’t know what those terms means, there‘s a good chance you’re now in the minority of Americans who have not logged on to Facebook, the world’s most popular social media website. According to a new national survey, 51 percent of Americans have logged time creating a personal profile on Facebook.

Its Official: Majority of Americans Are on Facebook

Guess who's on Facebook...

Edison Research reports:

According to the upcoming report from Arbitron, Inc. and Edison Research, The Infinite Dial 2011: Navigating Digital Platforms, more than half of all Americans ages 12 and older are on Facebook. The study, fielded in January of 2011, indicates that 51% of all adults 12+ have profiles on this dominant site.

We have been tracking the growth of Facebook since 2008, and have watched it go from 8% usage just three years ago, to 51% today. In our presentation on April 5th you will also see the remarkable year-over-year growth of Facebook users especially among people over age 35, trends on frequency of usage, and the uptake of social networking on mobile phones.

In the few years its been around, Facebook has changed the way people around the world interact. It’s one of the only places you can be “friends” with people you haven’t spoken to in years — and many you’ve never even met.

Relationships are now defined in terms like single, married and “it’s complicated.”

“Tagging” horrible pictures of your friends has become a notorious method of payback.

On a global scale, Facebook has also helped to reshape nations as pro-democracy messages reach millions with just the click of a mouse.

Facebook has even made its mark on American politics.  Don’t think so?  Just ask former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin who routinely uses the social medium to interact directly with both her fans and the media, posting reactions to the world’s hot-button news items on her own profile. Additionally, the modern tea party movement was practically born on Facebook when individuals began to organize meetings and events in their local communities with like-minded friends.

If you’re one of the 51 percent of Americans now on Facebook, click over and “friend” The Blaze!

Closed my youtube account yesterday for trying to force me to link to Google.

    Never been on Facebook.

About a month ago when I read that a facebook page supporting the riots in egypt was up, I snapped and deleted all my info then deactivated my facebook account. I had alot of contacts there and used it maybe twice a week. If they allow that kind of content, I had to go. Maybe a bit extreme on my part, but the pieces were starting to fall into place. I service computers after work hours for pocket money and most of my work involves removing spyware and virii that most likely came from facebook apps and games. I dont feel people are actually networking via facebook for good reasons, all I see is people playing games and gossiping about other people instead of doing something productive. For some I think it has replaced the TV, which may be more interactive, yet less educational. Enough of my rant, on to the next, God Bless the U.S.A.

That’s a terrible reason to deactivate your account. First of all, why is removing a dictator from power a bad thing? But also, that page was just made by some random user. There are probably also pages for bands you don’t like, movies you don‘t like and people you don’t like. All you have to do is not press “Like” on the page and it will be out of your life.

The reason people over 30 are on facebook is to check on their 12 years olds that are on facebook, since we can’t monitor their calls constantly and they have access to phones everywhere they go now. So, most older adults I know are there to check up on the kids, mostly teens and young adults.
Same with the popularity of Myspace, of course as soon as something better comes along facebook will be history because the kids will migrate there, and the parents will follow to keep a check on them.

I’m with you. If the government wants to monitor me, I’m not going to make it any easier for them than it already is. I don’t have a problem with facebook itself but the way I see it, all it does is make it easier to bring about control of the people by the “Animal Farm” method.

I do not have a Facebook account nor does anyone in my family. Neither do we have Twitter accounts or even MySpace accounts. They are all invasive to our privacy and in the long run we do not want to possibly become victims of identity theft. More and more employers and/or prospective employers require access to your Facebook and/or Twitter accounts as well, and they could use any tiny thing found within your account to fire you or refuse to hire you as they see unfit. I have yet to see or hear of ever even one employer and/or prospective employer -requiring a Facebook/Twitter/MySpace account as a condition of employment- but I see and/or hear of employers firing and/or refusing to hire over Facebook/Twitter/MySpace accounts all the time… not to mention the account hacking, identity thefts, and other modern day debacles such as ‘cyber bullying’ and ‘cyber stalking’ etc ad nauseam.

Facebook and the like are just evil. Nothing good comes of them.

Briefly had a Facebook page. Deleted it over a year ago. Didn’t like how they kept updating the site to allow your content out to third parties. Also was annoyed with the constant “is taking the trash out”, “is bored”, “is cooking dinner”. Or maybe perhaps I just have uncreative friends :)
