It’s Official: More People Now Accepting Disability Benefits Than Live in NYC

Politicians often discuss the “welfare state” or the “entitlement society” that they believe America is unwittingly sinking in to, but the latest statistics from the Social Security Administration provide a disturbingly clear illustration of just how far we have come.
In June of 1992, there were about 35.5 people working for each person who accepted disability checks. By May of 2012, that dynamic had shifted so drastically that there are now roughly only 16.3 people working for each person accepting the checks, according to the Social Security Administration.
To put that in perspective, the number of beneficiaries has grown so large that it now exceeds the population of New York City.
To give you some raw numbers, in June of 1992, there were 118,419,000 people employed in the United States and 3,334,333 workers accepting federal disability payments. By May of 2012, there were 142,287,000 people employed in the United States, and 8,707,185 people accepting disability payments.
As you can see, we barely have more jobs than we did in 1992, but have more than doubled the number of people accepting benefits.
But that’s not all.
CNS News, which broke the story Monday, notes that it isn’t only the disabled workers who accept the disability checks. For many, both spouses and children also receive supplementary income, and if you factor in their numbers, a staggering total of 10,806,335 people accepted disability payments in May.
The average check for a disabled worker was $1,111.18, while spouses generally received close to $298.41, and children $330.98.
It isn’t surprising, then, that the Social Security System’s Disability Insurance Trust Fund has run deficits for each of the last three fiscal years. CNS News writes: “In fiscal 2009, the Disability Insurance Trust Fund deficit was $8.5 billion. In fiscal 2010, it was $20.8 billion. And in fiscal 2011, it was $25.3 billion.”
The official website for disability benefits also advertises “other benefits you may be able to get.” Among them are medicare, low-income medicare (where the state could cover your premiums, deductibles, and other “out of pocket” expenses), and food stamps. Children receive benefits until they are 18, but can continue receiving if they go to school full-time by age 19 or become disabled by the time they are 22. The child can also receive benefits during a fourth month vacation period, if they plan to go back to school at the end of it. The site also clarifies that once you hit retirement age, your disability benefits automatically convert to retirement benefits.
Doug Powers of Michelle Malkin’s website notes that it also isn’t rare for people to apply for disability after their long-term unemployment benefits run out.
Which leaves many asking: do we really have more than 8 million people who physically cannot work in this country, or are people taking advantage of benefits rightly set aside for the disabled?
The government’s definition of the term is rather loose: “We consider you disabled under Social Security rules if: You cannot do work that you did before; we decide that you cannot adjust to other work because of your medical condition(s); and your disability has lasted or is expected to last for at least one year or to result in death.”
Click here for a list of impairments that qualify.
One Twitter user wrote of the statistics: “We ARE Europe,” lamenting our seeming transition to an entitlement society. Whether or not that’s true, one thing is certain: between ever-increasing beneficiaries and extremely slow growth in the sector that provides for them, the situation is mathematically unsustainable.

Posted on July 4, 2012 at 7:52amIn Texas anyone who is arrested in asked why they held up the gas station or whatever. If they say they were depressed (which 99% do) they are given disability and told they can never work again. If their first check doesn’t come in for a year because of backlogs they get a check with back pay on it. Some of these checks can be $10k to $25k. These people aren’t all aa but no matter the race they all spend the money as fast as it comes in…doing their part to stimulate the economy.

Drug parties… Not all do that many like to buy your typical big screen tvs and one even used some money to buy a horse. Posted on July 4, 2012 at 7:04amThey need to divide this into a racial study like they do everything else. The A Americans get their own doctor to say they are disabled so they can receive benefits. No one has the guts to examine or question certain races over the validity of it. This scam has been going on for years.

My three kids I could buy little for. Giving money for them to go anywhere was tough. This is back in 2003. The company I worked for used the 9/11 tragedy to get rid of many people. Even those with over 15 years of service. All while claiming we were at War and they needed to cut back. 20% Salary Cut. All while Business Tripled. I saw this Disability thing coming back then. Everyone who was let go that had years in the company filed for S.S.D. Most received it. Claiming STRESS! I thought at that time if this is all it takes. We are in BIG Trouble and the Roles will become unsustainable.Boy! Was I right.

Posted on July 3, 2012 at 11:03pmAll of you self-righteous, better than thou hypocrite/liars need to wake up and smell the coffee. I am fairly certain (maybe about 98% certain), that if you or your husband or wife, as the case may be, ever needed disability benefits, you would certainly apply for and collect, disability money.
I am 52 years old now. I had a paper route when I was 13-years old growing up in NYC. When I was 16 I was attending a Catholic HS and worked two jobs. I worked as a busboy/waiter at a banquet hall and I also did construction work. I got very good grades in HS and I ultimately went to college and then to graduate school for a Master of Science degree. I worked for 27-years at a career I loved.
Over the past several years I required 3 cervical -spine fusion surgeries. After tjhe first two, I had great relief and returned to work as quickly as possible after the surgeries. However, after my third cervical fusion surgery, I was in worse pain after the surgery then I was in prior to the surgery, and it is chronic pain from damaged nerves from spinal stenosis, spondylosis, scoliosis, along with musculoskeletal pain from scar tissue and from titanium rods, plates, and screws from the spinal hardware in my neck, and last but not least, severe arthritus.
I cannot work and I currently collect disability. I used to love work and am now very bored. I collect about ten times less money from disability compared to my prior salary. I have a wife, two kids, and a house, oh, and a dog. I woul

Posted on July 3, 2012 at 11:17pmI would do anything to be able to go back to work! This is the first time that I ever needed to collect any money from government benefits. While the amount of money I get is piss-poor, I am grateful to be getting it. I am also fortunate that we had made some good investments over the years and hopefully we won’t have any “major” problems like losing our house to foreclosure!
Anyway, all of you people claiming that all people collecting benefits are stupid and lazy, suckling on the big-government teats are wrong! Sure, there are people collecting disability benefits who are likely not disabled, and truly are just stupid and lazy, but from my short ‘history’ with disability, many people truly are disabled and need help.
Oh, and I am willing to bet the farm that if you were in a situation similar to mine, you would collect monetary benefits also! Even though it would make you a liar and a hypocrite!

Posted on July 4, 2012 at 4:43amFREEBERTY – You are totally clueless! Yes, I have some investments and investment income (like most people)but its not like I’m a Thurston Howell, III or a Willard ‘Mitt’ Romney, or any pro athlete or hollywood actor, or CEO, …… My relatively average investments grew very nicely during the 90′s digital revolution and dotcom bubble, just like everyone else’s. Unfortunately, my investment savings is starting to accelerate in the wrong direction!
This is quite scary since I am “only” 52-yrs old!
NORMALMOM, RAGNARS REPOS, & LUKERW – Disability along with any other type of government assistance will always have people scamming the system or at least trying to scam the system. Having said that, the answer to this problem is not to get rid of this or other ‘safety nets’, the solution is to do a better job of making sure that individuals do not scam the system and that only individuals that truly qualify for whatever actually get the assistance.
I have seen many of the TV advertisements that LUKERW mentions regarding the law firms looking for people to “help” [intentional sarcasm] apply for and recieve Social Security Disability for a chunk of the ‘money pie’! This is ridiculous, and is a whole DIFFERENT problem of its own.
I did not require any lawyers, and was labeled disabled according to their definition. In my opinion, if you truly are disabled to the extent of their requirements : No Lawyers are Needed !

Posted on July 4, 2012 at 8:05amMany of us are just like you. Been there done that. Thank goodness my arthritis is treated by a good doctor and while he won‘t ever cure it I don’t need my crutches any longer… my disks were successfully operated on and back pain is much less than before. Could I claim disability? sure I could… but then I would never be able to slam others that do.
Report Post »I never had medical insurance before my wifes company made her take it. I did have a policy that with a $5000 deductible in case I had a heart attack or cancer. I saved up the $5000 and put that into a bank account in case I ever needed the medical care. For regular treatment I would figure what something was worth and make deals with doctors and pay them in cash. Sometimes I had to talk with 4 or 5 doctors before i could make a deal but I always made a deal.
I needed an mri on my back and I went into the office and asked if I could get one and the nurse told me it was $1500. I told her I only had $300 in cash. The doctor stood up took my money and told the nurse to set me up.
