It’s Official: TSA Granted ‘Fundamental Human Right’ to Unionize

WASHINGTON (AP) — The government will grant collective bargaining rights to the nation’s 40,000 airport screeners, the head of the largest federal workers union said Friday.

John Gage, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, told The Associated Press he was informed of the decision at a meeting with John Pistole, head of the Transportation Security Administration.

TSA workers have tried for nearly a decade to win the same union protections as other federal employees, but Republican opponents have balked over worries that union demands could jeopardize national security or slow response times in a crisis.

Union officials call those arguments an insult to the hundreds of thousands of public safety officers that already have collective bargaining rights, including Border Patrol agents, firefighters and the Capitol police.

“Today marks the recognition of a fundamental human right for 40,000 patriotic federal employees who have been disenfranchised since the inception of the agency,” Gage said.

Pistole had spent months studying the unionization issue since he was confirmed to the post in June. The move comes just days after Pistole said the agency would not hire private contractors to screen airline passengers, despite calls to do so from some Republican lawmakers and frustrated passengers.

When the agency was created in 2001, it was excluded from regulations that give other federal workers the right to union protections. The law gave the TSA administrator the authority to decide whether collective bargaining should be allowed, and under the administration of President George W. Bush it was always prohibited.

President Barack Obama had pledged to get the screeners collective bargaining rights during his campaign. But the effort was delayed after Obama’s first two choices to run the agency dropped out during their confirmation processes.

Earlier this week, Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss, offered an amendment to the FAA authorization bill that would bar the screeners from gaining union rights.

“Burdensome and costly union demands could limit the ability of those responsible for security at some of the most high-risk targets to do their job,” Wicker said. “The FBI, the CIA and the Secret Service do not have collective bargaining rights for good reason.”

The Federal Labor Relations Authority has already set union elections at the TSA to begin in early March. TSA employees will choose between AFGE and the National Treasury Employees Union for representation.

AFGE already has more than 12,000 dues-paying members among the screeners’ ranks, but the union has not been allowed to bargain on behalf of its members.

I worked for the Federal Government for 37 years and a manager for much of it. I worked for Treasury, DOD in a couple of their agencies and the Veterans Administration. I know for a fact that the people who decided to join the unions (wasn’t mandatory) did not work as hard as non-union. I trust they will not allow them to walk off their jobs in a labor dispute. Also they should not be made to join the union if they don’t want to. They will probably make it mandatory. This administration is owned by the unions. It was just a matter of time.

In all seriousness, we have a unionized screening process and a unionized air travel industry. The tragedy is that pretty much conservatives can get nothing done because of the Socialist majority in the Senate and the Socialist veto in the White house.

Plain and simple is it’s up to the people now, we have to keep spreading the word in our communities about the danger of the Democrats and how it is just a front for extremists that want to collapse our country. Only by spreading the word and getting united and involved we can get more real conservatives elected like in the Nov. elections.

You have to look at this in a certain light. I am against Unions, I think they’re given too much power as it stands today. Do i believe employees have the right to “unite” among themselves to redress grievances against their employer, yes! Can they unit and call for a strike, yes! It’s their labor and their wages. The Employer also has the right to ignore them and FIRE them all and hire a whole new batch of workers. Or if those workers are important enough to listen to, he can choose to negotiate with them to keep them working.

There shouldn’t be an overall union nor should there be permanent unions that sit and wait to start a fight. Employees do have the right to say “We won’t take this anymore!” as a group but that’s as far as they get. They shouldn’t be protected from being fired or anything like that.

No it will not, It will take the PEOPLE in EVERY location that has a TSA screen airport to petition their LOCAL government agency that control these airports (and most TSA airports are quasi pubic or outright public agency’s) to remove the TSA screeners and replace them with private ones.

Once that is in place individuals will no longer have to comply with union thugs bleeding them dry in order to get or keep a decent job and the national union membership totals will tank to near zero in a matter of a few months.

The national unions always have been, and always will be, shills for Sociopathic Socialist Organizations that are Anti-self determination, Anti-freedom, and Anti-America.

Single shop and single industry unions, such as the NFL player’s union, are the only ones that still actually work for the improvement of their member’s working conditions whereas the National/International SEIU, AFL-CIO, etc. are nothing more then mobsters holding the worker’s right to work ransom via union dues that are then used to fund the Union bosses pay, benefits, retirement, and parties instead of providing any real, long term, tangible benefit to the members who slave under forced union membership.

I don’t hold much hope for that happening in many places any time soon (i.e. California, Illinois New York or any other “blue” state). In the mean time there will be at least 50,000 (40,000 is bogus) new dues paying, junk groping union thugs supporting Democrats. No, no, “Not!” Obama CANNOT be elected again. There are ten states — Texas, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Connecticit, Montana, and others that are introducing legislation requiring certified paperwork proving eligibility for POTUS or congressional seat befopre they can be placed on the ballot. This includes the long-form birth certificate that Obama has spent millions of dollars to keep hidden, to be ATTACHED to the request to be placed on the ballot.

Get enough states to do this in order to amass enough Electoral College votes to block him, and you will see Obama and family, and their little dog, too, ride off into the sunset

Those of us in a right to work state won’t join anyway. Those who are in labor union controlled states are already mostly brainless liberals who do the bare minimum they have to keep their job anyway. I don’t like it, but I don‘t think it will make the difference you’re concerned about. We’ll see.

“President Barack Obama had pledged to get the screeners collective bargaining rights during his campaign.”

To those who object to I’d ask: Americans don’t have a right to talk about what they want and join together a common purpose? Isn’t that what the colonists and Founding Fathers did when America broke free from England? Isn’t that what the Tea Party is? A group of citizens who promise to vote together?

TSA employees can’t join and challenge the Government about their pay and working conditions and what the Government requires them to do? TSA employees must be subject to whatever the Government decides and follow whatever they’re told utterly without a voice?

You guys are against Government control and support the power. I say that We the People have a voice. You can’t be in favor of We the People and be against people organizing to promote their common interest.

@cheezwhiz…yep, the time is upon us. This is the official harrassment tool of the FED now. Next, they‘ll be at your door because it was ’something you said’. They’re all about to dye their shirts brown.

The TSA should be abolished. Let the airlines hire or do their own security. Let pilots carry a weapon to defend the cockpit.

What happens when the unionized TSA security personel decide to go on strike, no security screening, no flying ? Oh I know, that’s never going to happen. Yea well, never say never !

Right……the tea party is the same thing? So the tea party collects a salary from the federal government which derives all of it’s funds from taxation? You didn’t do too well on the analogy portion of the SAT did you?

Yes Robert, you are correct in your take on this. Watch how they start to sloooowly copy the the brothers and sisters in the USPS. Just as the sun rises in the east you know the TSA was going to be unionized. Now how are we as taxpayers going to handle this as states are bankrupting as we speak. If the company I work for received taxpayer dollars and became unionized by the Federal Government this would be a heaven sent proposition. When do you think us taxpayers will stop being taken advantage of? I still love you all and peace be with you.

Federal Employees should not be allowed to unionize. Hell screw unions in general. If you don’t like your employer, quit and find a new job. If you not capable of finding a better job then suck it up and earn that pay check. It‘s not anyone else’s fault that you fail to diversify your skill set. In the job market today, if you quit because you feel like you weren’t making enough, as an employer I can replace you in a heart beat.
