Obama: ‘We’ve Tried This Trickle-Down Experiment Before — It Doesn’t Work’

The nation needs the so-called Buffett Rule and can’t afford to keep giving tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans “who don’t need them and didn’t even ask for them,” President Barack Obama said in his weekly address.
“As many Americans rush to file their taxes this weekend, it’s worth pointing out that we’ve got a tax system that doesn’t always uphold the principle of everyone doing their part,” Obama said.
His address caps a week-long effort by the administration in promoting the proposal that would require millionaires to pay a minimum of 30 percent of their income in taxes. The Senate is expected to bring the proposal up for a vote next week, and Obama implored “some Republican politicians to get on board with where the country is.”
“It’s pretty sensible,” he said, adding that “most Americans support this idea.”
A Gallup poll released Friday found 60 percent of adult Americans are in favor of the proposal, including 74 percent of Democrats and 63 percent of independents. Republicans oppose it, though only by 54 percent.
“This is not just about fairness,” Obama said. “This is also about growth. It’s about being able to make the investments we need to strengthen our economy and create jobs. And it’s about whether we as a country are willing to pay for those investments.”
Referring to the Bush tax cuts, which Obama has railed against, he said: “We were told these tax cuts would lead to faster job growth. Instead, we got the slowest job growth in half a century, and the typical American family actually saw its income fall.”
By contrast, he added, “When the most well-off Americans were asked to pay a little more in the 1990s, we were warned that it would kill jobs. Instead, tens of millions of jobs followed.”
“We’ve tried this trickle-down experiment before. It doesn’t work,” he said.

Posted on April 14, 2012 at 9:33amIf there is but one silver lining to this, it is the fact that this “Buffet Rule” will never see the light of day. There is no way it will ever pass the body charged with determining our expenditures and revenues. The House (even under Boehner’s “leadership”) will laugh this out. It may actually be an opportunity to demonstrate how Harry Reid refuses to address any bills that the House has passed.

Posted on April 14, 2012 at 9:44amObama knows it will never pass. This is all about getting the “optics” he wants for his campaign. Keep pumping out the class warfare rhetoric to energize the ignorant and dependent to get to the polls and vote for him. He KNOWS the opposition is energized.
The only problem with this strategy is that every time he opens his mouth, his demagoguery only inflames and energizes that opposition, reminding them of how important it is to vote this guy out of office.

Posted on April 14, 2012 at 10:45amEven if we admit that Obama is referring to trickle-down economics, where the tax burden is shifted from the producers to the consumers (as it should be) and not as many posters here say, trickle-down poverty, et al., he’s dead wrong.
The canonical proponent of trickle-down economics was Ronald Reagan. When Reagan instituted his lower and simpler taxing structure, federal revenues jumped by over 100%, more than doubling. Problem is, at the same time, the Democrat controlled Congress made federal spending jump over 4x.
We do not have a taxing problem. We have a spending problem. A federal spending problem. Namely, they’re spending too damn much. We cut federal spending to 1/4 of what it is now, and that would be a GOOD START. It would not completely cure our fiscal ills, but it would be a nice first step. More cuts to follow would finish the treatments to putting America back on a solid economic footing.

Government can’t strengthen the economy or create productive jobs – if they were productive, the free market would do it.
And it was when government tried to help out in the housing market that caused the recent housing bubble – a massive misallocation of resources.
Ron Paul saw the resulting crash coming six years ahead of time, in 2001. Bush didn’t crash the economy with free market economics – he did so with government intervention.

However, Oblamer lies, and claims he is trying to help the poor. Nothing could be further from the truth. Oblamer and Axelrod will need to pivot again on this non starter. If the commie networks and MSM didn’t have so many leftist convinced that the Republicans were as evil as the leftist, then NObody (Ozero), Nobody would vote for Oblamer. Until you are willing to have an intelligent discussion on slashing spending, completely reforming this unbalanced tax code (flatten it out and include ALL Americans) , and returning to limited government principles such as Reagan espoused, we will continue to view you as a naive child who gets to play president for a few more months.

Posted on April 14, 2012 at 9:09amHe wants more than double taxes on the investment of capital into private enterprise. Isn’t that the type of activity that we want for job creation? Besides, dividends are an investor’s share of profits generated by a business, profits that are ALREADY taxed at the corporate level with the highest tax rate in the world. If you take that into account the effective tax on dividend income is already over 40%. Those who think this is a good idea are either ignorant or are not being honest with the public about their true motives.

Posted on April 14, 2012 at 8:54amAgain .. I say the millionaires/billionaires will shelter their money and pay less than the average American (rate wise) and will always do .. Look at Europe. China, Russia, or any country, the rich are still rich and the rest get screwed. The tax system maybe unfair but if this idiot would work on streamlining the way the gov’t works, there would be a lot of money. Look at the states that have done austerity programs, they now have surpluses. Obama needs to talk to people like Dave Ramsey and not to the tax and spend friends of his.

Posted on April 14, 2012 at 8:47amWe need flat tax, progressive tax are like all things progressive, really regressive. While they pretend to help the poor and middle class, while hurting the rich, they really do the opposite. The poor are encouraged to not work harder, because when they do, the increased taxes make their raises vanish, the rich have loopholes, and the middle class is stuck footing the bill.

Posted on April 14, 2012 at 9:16amYour little ditty about increases in earnings vanishing as the tax rate increases is foolish and anyone who passed fifth grade math can figure out there has never been a tax code in which that was true. But after you supported a flat tax what could we expect? The problem remains that we became the first country in the history of the world to go to war (two in fact) and cut taxes at the same time. The right wingers always cry about somebody getting something for nothing from the government, well, it’s time to pay for the two wars that Republicans demanded and refused to pay for. 6389 men and women paid with their lives, and the tea-party says they are taxed enough already. Patriots do their share.

Posted on April 14, 2012 at 10:42amMarine, when name calling idiots like you tell me I don’t know math Try being a single woman with a kid making $35k, getting $5k in earned income credits, and see what taking a $15k raise to a management position does to your tax situation. You loose your $5k in earned income credit, and rather than bringing home your entire $40K minus 7% social security, you pay close to 20% on $50k and bring home $100 a month more than you were bring home. You have much, much more responsibility have to deal with getting into trouble when those you manage screw up, and when all is said and done, you bring home less money.

Posted on April 14, 2012 at 10:45amYou know more people in the army died under Clinton when we weren’t at war than did under Bush while conducting 2 wars. The 2 wars actually helped our economy, all that pay came back here to be spent, all those weapons are built here, and the money turns over 7 times here, instead on once like crap made in china. If it hadn’t been for the wars, the mess Clinton had left us in along with 911 would have caused a depression even worse that the one the democrats caused in 2007.

Posted on April 14, 2012 at 10:59amHave to agree with a flat tax. It still has it’s ability to be abused should another wrong administration and congress take office again. The very first thing that Clinton did with a dem congress was to raise taxes and he even taxed Social Security for the first time in our history. If anybody taxed the poor it was Bubba. I entered the service back in the early days of Carter. At the beginning of the next Fiscal Year starting in Oct 1977 we received a small pay increase. I got something like an additional $51.00 a month and that put me in the next tax bracket. I actually lost take home pay. Some pay raise?! Not blaming Carter for that, he was not in office long enough yet to start his real damage. It was the way the tax code had it’s established tax brackets. Would love to see a flat tax put into place and not be graduated. I do believe in the Equal Protection Under The Laws clause instead of the Beck and crews’ jokingly “Good And Plenty” clause.

Posted on April 14, 2012 at 11:12amRJJINGADSDEN The tax code is complex and confusing by design, the lawbreakers who designed it envisioned carve outs for their friends ie crony capitalism and the confusing part of the tax code makes it easier for our friends at the IRS to persecute us so it’s a win win for the government of course.

Posted on April 14, 2012 at 11:18amThe bonus to a flat or fair tax (different things) would be that it takes some of the impetus out of the government and business holding hands as well…tax laws wouldn’t get passed to financially benefit one industry or particular company over another. Either everyone‘s taxes go up or everyone’s taxes go down.
Manipulation would still happen but it would be in the light of day and not some obscure one sentence tucked into a 200 page bill.
