‘I’ve Been Missing You’: Chris Matthews Gives Creepy Intro to Debbie Wasserman Schultz Before Grilling Her

Back in 2010, when Glenn Beck interviewed Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, comedian Jon Stewart compared the exchange to a conversation between Hannibal Lecter and Agent Clarice Starling in “The Silence of the Lambs.”

That was an an unfair comparison. But in the case of Chris Matthews‘ intro to Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz on tonight’s “Hardball,” it’s extremely apt. As Wasserman-Schultz comes on, Matthews introduces her with a set of questions that sound as though they should be accompanied by heavy breathing.

“I haven’t seen much of you lately, where have you been, the last couple months? Have you been out on television?” Matthews asked. Wasserman-Schultz, visibly a little surprised to be asked this, responds that her duties as a mother have kept her somewhat under the radar. Fair enough, and you would expect Matthews to drop it after that response.

Actually, it‘s at this point where Matthews’ previous questions go from sounding intrusive, to sounding creepy. “I’ve been missing you,” he says with a furtive look downwards into his lap. “We want you for our own show business reasons, but also I like to see the partisan combat.”

The weirdest part of this “why don’t you call me anymore” style exchange is that it doesn’t set the tenor for the following interview at all, in which Matthews grills Wasserman-Schultz on the tactical choices of the Democratic National Committee and the Obama campaign. All in all, it’s a surprisingly aggressive interview (if one that’s obviously biased toward the extreme Left).

    I‘m pretty sure Barry’s been eyeballing that 2 zip code ass. I’m pretty sure Wasserman was in that Burger King commercial about the big butts.

    I don’t think anyone had a thrill going up their leg that night.

      I think he was admonishing her actually, for not being out in the trenches fighting for Emperor Obama. Basically he was acusing her of not doing her job. What he doesn‘t realize is the power brokers have intentionally held her back because she is such a poor representaitve for their party and people don’t like her.

      She is very creepy! And kinda like Joe Biden, every time she opens her “snaggletoothed mouth”, she says something stupid that shows their ideology for what it really is. And they can’t afford that.. Gonzo is correct!!!!

      GONZO you’re right…Chrissie Tingles Man-Crush Matthews is upset that the DNC isn‘t being very effective and he’s trying to motivate Debbie does DC Wasserman Schlitz to get on the game.
      Realistically…Schlitz can only work with what she has available to her but Chrissie doesn’t get that.

      GONZO, You are dead on right with that statement. Wassaman-Schultz plays to the uber left base every time it opens that nozzle under the nose. It’s not connecting in any way with the undecided, and is more of a turn off for them. Of course, Medusa incarnate would scare anybody away.

    That was not creepy. It was completely normal for TV when they introduce their guests. you can easily find something on FoxNews similar to this. this is another very disapointing headline from your website. He also did not GRILL her. he just wasn’t kissing her a$$.

    I come to this site so the truth is not spun, twisted, or exaggerated. Many times now, you will post misleading headlines, or headlines with your own emotional reaction. it is becoming irritating, and makes me question just how much on this site is in fact, is true, or how much is taken out of context-something you often hear people bicker about. when you say chris matthews acted CREEPY (even though that is up to the reader to decide) like you did here, you start becoming like moveon.org, or mediamatters. just because you disagree with MSNBC doesn’t mean you should go around calling them creeps because of how you interpret something like this.

    i expect better from a site created by Glenn Beck. stop the sensational headlines, please.

      What‘s even funnier about this article is that the author first takes a shot at Jon Stewart and claims that Stewart calling Glenn Beck creepy wasn’t fair at all. Then, he turns around and makes the same exact accusation against Chris Matthews claiming that the Silence of the Lambs reference applies here but not there.

    CM seems to want to be the chief Demo-marxist strategist. I only channel surf through msnbc, but every time I stop for a few seconds he is touting strategies the dems should be using. He wasn’t much happy about the other dems approving of Bain capital. FUNNY!

    Chris Matthews is a perfect example of a liberal man: spineless, effeminate, and as lively as a cold dead fish. Wasserman-Schultz could be a stand-in for the next Mr. Ed remake.

    She’s been all over TV, just apparently not on his show. Apparently she wants to be seen. But I think she’s a good fit for Mattews. He can ask his moronic questions and she can try to read her talking points and not worry about being obvious.

    Chrissy is afraid that the progressive Marxists are losing their message .. and he wants to promote the most vile and shrill .. like DW-S. DW-S is too stupid to “freelance” the message .. I think they have been educating her .. on a way to try to SOUND intelligent .. even though she isn’t. Too often she ADDS to the talking points and makes a fool of herself ..
