James Holmes’ Death Trap: Inside The ‘Dark Knight’ Shooter’s Apartment

James Holmes Apartment So Extensively Booby Trapped That Robots May Be Used to Penetrate It

Getty

James Holmes, the man who reportedly shot over 70 people and killed 12 at a Dark Knight Rises midnight showing, appears to have wanted more than just the attendees at that showing to suffer at his hands.

Why? Because the 24-year-old former neuroscience PhD’s apartment, according to investigators, has been booby trapped with explosives, seemingly in anticipation of a police investigation. ABC News reports:

In an ironic, but horrifying twist, Holmes did such a good job of booby trapping his apartment and arming it against intrusion that police are now saying they may send robots in to diffuse all the weapons. CNN reports on this superhero movie-esque turn of events:

It is possible authorities may wind up using robots to blow up the booby traps and explosives inside the shooting suspect’s apartment because it may be too dangerous to send people in to do it, a law enforcement source tells CNN’s Susan Candiotti.

A decision isn’t expected until tomorrow about entering the apartment, the source said.

“There’s so much circuitry and collapsing circuits,  it’s a difficult process,”  the source said.

Robots were sent in during the day and investigators, including explosives technicians, are going over all the information gathered from those robots.

No pictures have been released of Holmes’ apartment, or the dangers therein, even though surveillance robots were sent in earlier to videotape the scene. However, early reports suggest that large jars of chemicals have been connected to trip wires, though which chemicals are involved is not clear. Mortar rounds, ie explosive shells, are rumored to also be in the apartment. Neighbors are being evacuated from the building as a precaution in case one or more of the explosive traps is set off by investigators.

If early reports suggesting Holmes intended to pass as “the Joker” are accurate, then this behavior is disturbingly consistent with that character, as depicted in Chris Nolan’s second Batman movie, “The Dark Knight.“ Several acts of seemingly motiveless random violence are perpetrated in ”the Dark Knight,” and the character shows an affinity for using elaborately wired bombs and/or explosives.

And indeed, like his supposed fictional counterpart, Holmes has apparently refused to cooperate with investigators, invoking his right to an attorney shortly after being arrested. He has not provided any information on the type of explosives in the room, nor offered to help with disarming them. It is not clear how he acquired the scientific know-how to so extensively booby trap his living space.

I think that he set-up the devices to slow down police response at the movie theater. One of his apartment neighbors called the police to complain about the loud music coming from his apartment and was told that they too busy to respond because of a breaking case that they were already responding to.

She then went to his apartment door and knocked on it, and found it to be slightly ajar. She was going to push it open and shout inside, but changed her mind.

I think the plan was to have his apartment building blow up in a massive explosion about the same time he went on his rampage – thus splitting police and first responder resources. When he didn’t hear or see the explosion of his apartment building, he realized that his plan didn’t work, he decided to tell the police about the traps since he no longer “needed” that explosion.

Comrade that sounds logical. I am sick and tired of hearing words like “What has motivated his attack” because they are inane at best.
It’s obvious what motivated his attack, he is a sick nut case that wanted to kill people.

I’m very much interested to know his motivation. Perhaps he is just some wacko going off at random – - – or not. We know he’s well educated. But given the heavy Marxist influence on most taxpayer funded, California, college and university campuses, exactly what classes has he taken? His education is heavily science based, but has he also taken and: Sociology, Political Science, Women’s Studies, Humanities, or other Liberal Arts curriculum, where violent Marxist revolution is glorified and promoted?

Was TDKR targeted for its conservative plot lines, or anti-Occupy sentiments? At this point I have lots of questions and lots of suspicions about this young man’s motivation to engage in this violent behavior, but unlike some MSM networks will refrain from jumping to conclusion until the facts are conclusively known.

A very likely scenario. But a curious thing was that he told the police that the apartment was booby trapped and they didn’t know why because after that he clammed up again. It occurred to me that this was his fail-safe revenge. If the police killed him, they would be killing themselves by default. (In his mind) If he lived, he could tell them and thus grant them the mercy they had shown him. Also, why didn’t he just put the apartment on a timer if he really wanted a diversion? Maybe he wanted to make sure to kill more people or maybe my theory holds water…?

Yes, books kill. Let’s definitely ban them right along with guns. Then we can be ignorant AND defenseless against the government or invasion from outside. Great idea!

Also people, don‘t be so sure that any one of you couldn’t do the same thing if the right state of mind gripped you. What he did was a result of our collective human condition and frailty. You can tell yourself that you would NEVER do something like that and you are statistically probably right, but you don’t know for sure… and have no idea how possible it really is. My ex brother-in-law had a good job, a nice house, a nice wife… (Well the ‘nice’ wife part is an exaggeration :) Then one day a switch just flipped in his mind and he became schizophrenic. The wife left immediately of course, he walked away from the job, sold the house, got in his car and disappeared into the confusion to find the ringleaders who were (in cooperation with the CIA) tapping his brain and causing him to have thoughts of killing people. Great, eh? His mother was unsuccessful in having him committed. Unfortunately his mother, I and my wife are thought to be deeply involved in the conspiracy. We think we saw his car at the super market one day here in California 1200 miles from where he originally fell off the grid but as far as we know, he doesn’t know where we live… Very creepy. Not uncommon. I am always armed. (Legally :) This country and this civilization are sick and so it produces sick people.

The sicko baited the room by playing music really loud, hoping to lure someone into setting off the bomb. He doesn’t seem particularly clever other than that, however…if he intended to use this explosion as a diversion, then why bother with tripwires? He could have set a timer just as easily.

Obama and his buddies are pushing at the UN for the Small Arms Treaty. However, they have one huge problem. It takes 2/3 of the Senate to ratify any treaty and as of this moment there is bipartisan support against it with at last count (I think) 55 Senators who oppose ratification. This has been an ongoing agenda for years and it will not stop. Right now the NRA and Gun Owners of America are the only two organizations that are our voice. I would suggest anyone who is committed to our Second Amendment rights to support these organizations through membership/donation.

Do you know what I keep thinking about is the senior man that had a gun and shot at the thieves. They ran and no one got hurt. So you have a theater with no guns 12 dead and many hurt. Now I realize that the ladder will not happen all the time but the thing is criminals have always said that they seek places where there are no guns. Here where we live in Colorado we have a law called “make my day.“ We post that ”Make My Day” law enforced here. We have been living here since 1995. The only thing we had happen to us is some kids knock down our mail box with everyone else’s. However, we have had no break-ins while people around us that didn’t have guns got rob. Again there is always an exception to the rule but this has been shown over and over again.
My husband had asked someone why they wouldn’t rob banks here the person said, “It would be easier to rob one in Albuquerque because they have a no gun law there. Because we live in a rural area most farmers and people here carry. However, in big cities like Denver you will not find that. So people think about that.

No matter how you cut it, the man is off his rocker in more ways than one. That is the problem with so many of our younger generation who have been educated in our great cultural colleges, where anything goes as long as you want it. BULLS….Parents help along the way by sheltering their kids in all phases of their growing up. I love the title “Helicopter Parents”, always hovering over them and never teaching them to accept the harsh realities of life. Rewarding them for bad behavior, etc., and it starts at a very young age. I could go on and on, but I don’t want to bore you. I just want you to know I speak from experience as a grandparent having seen both sides i.e. “Helicopter Parents” and those whose kids worked hard and knew what life in the real world was like. Thanks for listening.

Sometimes it’s based on what some people living in your neighborhood like, and sometimes companies just throw out ads to see what sticks.

This guy is REALLY WEIRD! I don’t think he was “targeting” the police–in the article it says that the music was load and that his door was SLIGHTLY AJAR. He probably to at least a small point “knew” his neighbors and figured someone would come knocking. He was “targeting” the common people around him, same as the joker!

If the woman who “looked in” had pushed that door open slightly more, there would probably be even MORE HORROR to this story!

Although a “Presbyterian church as a child” has been mentioned, a sex-seeking website has more recently also been tenatively linked to this guy, apppears that he was trying to make ome “statement” for his life with others’ deaths! He didn’t want to die himself, hence all the protective equipment he wore and used.

Boil it down–some lonely, frustrated, weird guy, brilliant to the point of insanity or in the least fantasy/illusion who was living in a “comic book world” somewhere deep in his mind, and decided to act out his fantasies on the innocent living.

Prease pray for the families hurt by this tragedy, for his family who may be the innocent bystanders of a mental and emotional treatment world that has gone so liberal and POLITICALLY CORRECT that no one is helped and no one is safe!

Our society has regressed so far backwards, and Obama has given it a major push in that direction, that citizens must carry weapons to protect themselves. This is not going to stop, society is being built this way in government schools. Hate is being pumped in to support political views and it’s getting much worse over time, just look around you. Sadly there will be copycats to this incident. Go to a theater henceforth at your own risk, and take your gun.

@ COMMENTINCHIEF Unfortunately, the owners of the theater prohibit the carrying of weapons into the theater. I guess they saw how that worked out. Even though Holmes was wearing body armor, getting shot might have slowed him down and one to the ocular cavity would have stopped this massacre Once again, when seconds counted, the cops were minutes away. Cops carry guns to protect themselves, not you. I am not anti-cop, just saying. Look what they are doing here, they didn’t prevent anything, they are only investigating the aftermath..

Along with protecting ourselves from government, anyone that truly wants to defend themselves, their family and innocents should be armed and trained. An armed society is a polite society. England and Australia have gutted their citizens right to own guns. The result? Violent crime is up 150%.

Non of this makes sense, of course, but I keep wondering why Holmes would tell the police he had explosives in his apartment so they would be careful when they went over there. If he doesn’t tell them anything they go over there, break down the door, and boom – mission accomplished for him. They would have figured out where he lived anyway and gone over there. If his goal was to kill as many people as he could then it seems like he would not have said anything to the police. Maybe he was hoping the neighbors would be the ones to go through the door and not the cops. Anyone have thoughts on this?

The evil son of a bitch is insane and as he’s already done such a fantastic job with his first murder spree…… I wouldn‘t be surprised if his apartment isn’t the only trap he’s set. The guy is smart no doubt, and so insane that I‘m guessing he’s spent months, if not years creating his kind of “homage to the Joker” crap in his head. As someone else has already said….. it’s going to be a long weekend. I’m really starting to wonder how many more poor, innocent souls are going to die over the coming days…. if they don’t find a room full of dead bodies of people he killed prior to what happened at the movie theatre. Stop posting your porn crap, you jerk! Chances are, your PC is infected with Progressive midget porn ads or something of the like. I don’t know, I’m taking a wild guess as to what other possible activities you must enjoy doing online. Whatever it is, you seem to be the only one having this issue. It‘s certainly the first time I’ve heard of such happening on here.

Here’s an idea, send that link to Chris Matthews. He seems to enjoy having that tingling sensation running up his leg, or down his leg, whatever….

I have talked to vets who have been to Afghanistan and guess what they were told to do during ramadan? While on patrol, they were not to eat in public/in front of locals while outside coalition bases.
Not eating while wearing full uniform with gear, rifle and ammo during summertime can lead to a heat related injury very easily.
Oh, and how many readers are aware that our troops are also prohibited from taking their Bibles off the base with them while on patrol? Don’t want to “offend” the local insurgents…er, I mean “offend” the locals now would we?

After the unspeakable tragedy last night, it reminded me of a valuable lesson I learned watching an episode of NCIS.

A serial killer was about to be captured and expected his name to live in infamy forever. Then the twist, Agent Gibbs closed the case, called the killer a “”Suspected Terrorist. His real name never given to the public, no pictures, no history.

I suggest that it may not be a bad policy. So many people have trouble mixing fantasy with reality, maybe if we don’t expose any fame/infamy our society it might slow these tragic events. One can only pray

I‘m an NCIS fan as well and didn’t make the connection to that episode but I’m glad you did because you have a good point. I believe the same thing happens in “Murder 2.0″ However this whole situation has reminded me of the last four episodes that have aired with the arson cases.

He may have a motive behind this attack, but it could be one that makes no sense to us. What matters now, however, is the safety of those in the nearby buildings and crews working on the apartment, the recovery of the injured, and the remembrance of the lost.

We are all praying for you out in Aurora. God bless.

Since they caught him “red handed” as they say -> What more “evidence” would be required? I say empty the ajoining apartments and blow it in place. Safer all the way around.

Because an officers life could be lost. Suppose the monster is only convicted of shooting three people to death, he will get the death penalty. They can add 7 more death and the bomb charges and it’s still death penalty. Another charge from the evidence doesn’t change anything. A life is worth more. If liberals were concerned about safety, the movie theater wouldn’t have been a gun free zone. Might as well charge the killer with violation of signs also. The $50 fine would help pay off the national Obama debt.

They will robotically collect as much physical and robotic evidence as possible and as necessary. Very often it is more feasable to dentonate inplace while containing as much of the blast as possible. Why risk lives needlessly trying to disarm and then transport the explosive material?

I’m pretty sure this is not the LEOs first rodeo.

      Thanks BobJ.

I thought I could go without stating the obvious (that the lives of officers were at risk)…oh well.
But I wish what you said had been contained in the story – that they would gather as much evidence as possible from the apartment BEFORE detonating any charges. Hopefully they’ll keep those charges to a minimum so they can go back in later and gather what they missed.
      Thanks!

This man obviously has serious issues. Exactly what we may never know. It was the act of one person, guns did not do it by themselves. I have little doubt that Obama will try to get some sort of political mileage out of this tragedy. If he had used a baseball bat to kill some people, are we going to try and regulate ball bats?

A weapon can be made from anything. This man is evil. He just wanted to kill people. People he likely did not know. Just kill and destroy. Not much different than those trying to destroy our country, only these are doing it in a round-about way. These are just as evil and crazy. They are just better at covering it up and layering what they are doing.

I thought the movie was cursed at first. It is a creepy character to play. This guy just related to the character on a personal basis. I think that being an outcast and isolated, he became angry and similar to The Joker. When people feel that they are not accepted by society like in the Columbine Shooting, they go after everyone because there is so much rage inside of them. The normal people become their enemy.
But there is also a spiritual aspect to this. When you dwell on anger all day, the dark forces have an open door to come in and do their work on your spirit. It takes you over and these people end up pretty mentally ill. Just look at some the crazy people in mental hospitals. They claim they have seen Satan himself. It makes you wonder if they really did have a visit from the dark lord himself.

Ok, I know some think it was to kill police, I on the other hand think it was to kill his neighbors or the Management at his apartment! Thats why he turned his music up and left. Keep in mind if the Police and Fire go to the apartment he has more time to kill!… I‘ve heard allot of News Stations reporting this and I don’t think it was to kill police. It was a destraction to allow him more time! The other thing is this. Obama and what he said today, is going after our Guns! People, the person behind this had issues and I think it was more of acting out the Charector in the movie! Obama will use this and I see an Excutive Order allready in the works. Keep in mind the UN’s agenda to take guns away from us. People if this happens we might as well, just drink obama’s “Jim Jones” coolade! Its headed for that and once he has it America People we’ll never be able to defend ourselves against tyranny!….. We need to head this off before it happens!

Those in our adminstration are just as evil and are working in ways that are in stealth and with agendas not as easily noticed. This has been going on for some time. They will do anything to get where they want to go, but as Obama told the Russian Prime Minister, he will have more flexibility after the elections. I do not put anything above what these people will do. They have dishonored the Office of Justice and the Presidency. Where is Congress? History will not be kind to them for allowing Americans this scourage and then not doing everything possible to rid America of this that they are empowered to do. They need to get on this now, and not wait until after elections.

Doc Green, After reading your post, I find it to be very dependable. I was wondering why young Holmes would even mention to the police that his apartment was rigged, and you have answered fairly well my question. I believe also that you are correct about the UN and Obama’s Exe. order. The Constitution, as we all know, is no longer a reckoning article. This Administration has trampled it underfoot and totally ignores it’s concept. The UN is delighted we have a President who has taken a path to destroy the citizens rights. I suspect before the 2nd Amendment is totally abolished Mr. O will write an Exe. order for Marshal Law, it will make it much easier for the government to confiscate all weapons from the people. WE THE PEOPLE must at this time, awaken that sleeping giant that has been stilled for way too long.

      http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_a_Collapsing_Circuit

A ‘collapsing circuit’ – in its idea – is a circuit designed to detect a failure in a circuit and act on it. The most basic implementation would be to monitor voltage/amperage levels on the target circuit and react when those levels change (a wire is cut, an element wears out etc.).

A circuit that detects a failure and then acts upon it. In this case, likely a circuit that – once broken – detonates an attached explosive device.

The more common vernacular is a “Deadman switch” – a switch or circuit designed to set off explosives when the circuit is BROKEN rather than when it is connected.

This means they can’t just cut the power to the apartment, either, or they might set something off.
