Jamie Lee Curtis Calls on Obama Admin to Fight Addiction in Wake of Whitney Houston’s Death

In a brief but heartfelt opinion piece for the Huffington Post, actress Jamie Lee Curtis uses the occasion of Whitney Houston’s untimely death to frame a call for action against drug addiction on the part of society…and the Obama administration (emphasis added):
Addiction is an epidemic. Much will be written of how sad it is. It is, of course, sad; but it is written into the addict’s manifesto, they will die.
I’m sure all those who party-cipated with an addict before their death will feel badly. I’m sure there are family members who tried everything they knew to divert them from this inevitable path. I’m sure there are those who warned and scolded and begged and pleaded. I am sure there are those who washed their hands of the addict. I am sure there are those who prayed for their salvation.
…
Don’t let another famous person die, participate in the media spectacle, the tearful, heartfelt farewells and the blame it on the fame game and not take it into your home and circle of life that surrounds you in your own life. It is not fame’s fault. It is no one’s fault. Do you blame cancer on fame? Do you blame diabetes on fame? It is a disease and like cancer, diabetes and depression, it is everywhere. Alcoholism and addiction is ever present and it wants you dead.
…
I hope to hear the drumbeat get louder and louder, a call to arms to face addiction and alcoholism head on, to make the administration take on this epidemic and to utilize the media spotlight on this one addict’s death to create real change.
Curtis‘ column comes at the same time that President Obama’s Drug Czar, Gil Kerlikowske, has called Whitney Houston’s death a “teachable moment” and — almost exactly as Curtis does — has said the administration should treat addiction as a disease. Video of Kerlikowske’s remarks comes courtesy of The Hill and CBS:
Some observers might wonder if such similarities between an official statement by an administration official and a high-profile celebrity show signs of a coordinated push for more intervention on the issue.

Houston’s death is certainly an easy excuse for the administration to make a renewed push on the several-decades-old War on Drugs.

Posted on February 15, 2012 at 6:38amRaising a strong, well-adjusted child begins the moment a child is born. Even though women‘s libbers won’t agree, all children need to be cuddled and snuggled for long periods of time by their mother. They need an ever present guardian who considers the welfare of the child first in every situation. Before women’s lib, this never was questioned and didn’t need defending or explaining. Why doesn’t anyone ever connect the dots from the breakdown of society to the deplorable way a majority of U.S. children are cared for (or not cared for) today? Yes, there are plenty of women who need to work. But, also there are just as many who could before pregnancy have chosen a much smaller home, a smaller TV, given up lavish lifestyles and taken over the job of guardian of children and guardian of society. If more women who could stay home did, they would be a huge blessing to the women who want to stay home and can’t. We don’t need any more government intervention or useless, money draining programs. Government doesn’t work – determined mothers and fathers can accomplish way more at no cost to the taxpayer. Does anyone ever get what an insult it was to women to be told the government can do a better job than a mother at raising her children?

And its not the kids on the street corner making the equivalent of minimum wage. With immigration we should fine companies and individuals who hire illegal workers $250,000 per occurrence. There are big money players behind the drug problem in the US. And some of them wear suits, white shirts and seem like honest businessmen. Some of them work for what appear to be legitimate pharmaceutical companies. The drug abuse problem in the US now is prescription drugs provided by physicians and Fortune 500 companies. But of course their just capitalists trying to make a buck.

Posted on February 15, 2012 at 10:11pmOK Jamie Lee Curtis: let the Feds into the rich and famous homes like yours and dictate what you can and cannot do. Open your lifestyle to the Feds first and tell me how it went later. I’ll keep to myself and not do drugs, not because I’m poor, but because I’m not as stupid as you and the Hollywood crowd. The USA doesn’t need drug addicts like Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. We need role models with dignity, honor and clean living. Whitney Houston is singing with the Devil…and she’s home now. What something is; is what it extends. Her life extended death. A death too early but none the less a direct result of her lifestyle. I’m worried about all the young Children that looked up to her as a role model. If SHE couldn’t handle it HOW could they. I guess they will just listen to Rap Cr@p music and while popping a cap, with their Gat, on a corner, where they are at.

Posted on February 18, 2012 at 12:55pmI’m 50 years old. Since I was a small child, there have been warnings on cigarette packs from the surgeon general. Cigarette companies were banned from advertising on television, we were bombarded with anti-smoking propaganda, and finally, the tobacco companies were held responsible for anyone who even got smelly fingers from cigarettes. Guess what? People are still smoking like chimneys. You can educate, but you cannot legislate behavior. The same basic concept holds for drugs. Educate people starting at a young age, and hope for the best. No matter what, there will always be a certain segment that does these things. Same for overeating. We all know that we should not overeat. The point is, regardless of the vice, no one pushed those drugs into Whitney, no one blew that smoke into the smokers, and no one force feed the obese person Big Macs. No, all of those people are responsible for their own actions, and should be forced to deal with the consequences. Personally, I think that if someone comes down with a smoking, drug, overeating, etc. related illness, that insurance companies, Medicare, and Medicaid should refuse payment, and the doctors should be allowed to get paid up front by the patient. They made their beds. They need to learn to sleep in them.

I had a close family member who was an alcoholic. They were told they could no longer see their gr-kids if they didn’t stop. An intervention was held, the person went to a rehab center for 11 days, weekly meetings for 16 months, has been clean for 3-1/2 years. They have no intention of ever drinking again.

Posted on April 13, 2012 at 3:49pmThe call should be to enablers and the co-dependent. The government acts as this agency of enabling in many cases. I hear Jamie’s cry out, and I can understand. Those of you who want to give her grief are ignorant of your own humanity. I have worked with countless numbers of devoutly religious folks who suffer terribly as their children are active addicts, so I know you are not exempt from the ravages addiction causes. The War on Drugs has never succeeded nor will it. As some very wise mother’s pointed out, it starts at home. All you tough and rigid religious rights who believe it is just a matter have being tough and having a strong will, if you have children, most likely contributed to your child’s emotional psychological struggles, whether they lead to addiction in the form of drugs or other abusive measures. No person chooses to be an addict nor would ask for such a life of literal hell on earth. The science supports it as a disease and if you need the neurological imaging of the brain to prove it to you, just google it. 80 % of the people in jail are there as a result of alcoholism and addiction. I could go on to list the massive costs dawned upon pour people as a result of alcohol alone, yet, it is still embraced. Which is fine, but you better look in the mirror if you neglected to tend to your children’s emotional and psychological well being and now disown them for being addicts. I will live my in the field of addiction helping those who suffer.

Posted on February 15, 2012 at 12:31amMRMAGOO…..I went to the Betty Ford Center. I was a relatively poor person, married to a Lt. in the Aiir Force, living about 90 minutes from the center. It is one of the least expensive treatment programs there was, and they help people who can’t afford to go there. We couldn’t afford for my husband and three kids to go through the family program, so BFC waived the cost, AND paid for my family to stay in a motel close by for the whole week. It is NOT luxurious…….it is a VERY TOUGH program……it is literally boot camp, and it was one of the hardest things I ever did. BTW, tomorrow will be 25 years since my last drink……….I drove myself down to BFC, and checked myself in, even though my then husband tried to sabotage.my determination to get help. I will always be grateful for that place!

Posted on February 15, 2012 at 12:00amTypical liberal. I did nothing to help this person, even though I had the opportunity as a fellow entertainer to get in touch with Whitney and help her. So to make me feel better about ignoring someone I could have attempted to help I will use my notoriety as a entertainer to ask the government to step in and do something. So Big Government please step in and take another freedom away from us. Please monitor my house and if you see me smoking crack in the bathroom come and arrest me and put me in prison where I will have easier access to drugs.
The southern border is wide open and the government will not close it to the cartels and their drugs. You can walk across the desert right into our country with no problem. Try to take your family on vacation and they molest your toddler before you get on the plane.
Report Post »The next time one of my children is molested by a TSA agent I will protest by saying. “Excuse me I am a Christian, we do not strap bombs to our children and blow them up!” You must have me confuse with a Muslim.
It‘s amazing the TSA can’t profile who they would search, but the FBI profile unsubs all the time in order to catch a criminal. They even train people on how to profile?

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 11:18pmJamie Lee needs to pull her head out of rear and think about what she said.
She compares Cancer and Diabetes to drug and alcohol addiction. WRONG!
No one consciously chooses to get Cancer or Diabetes. But an addict has to consciously choose to start using drugs and/or alcohol.
The fact is, You use drugs or over indulge on booze and you may die. If you die, there is no one to blame but your self!

So Jaimie, we know what you smoked, what elese did you use?
And asking Dumbama to do anything is pretty much worthless. Who would listen to that liar-in-chief?

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 11:15pmI’d like to see doctors get together and make some kind of data base where only they can access the drugs prescribed by other doctors for one particular patient. Kind of what places like Walgreens does today where they can give a “drug interaction” warning before dispensing medication. It would be kind of like a E-verify for doctors but NOT controled by the gov’t.

Posted on February 15, 2012 at 8:49amOhio has a form of that, an two years ago some doctors had their licenses suspended for over perscribing-I got caught in that mess when I had my knee replaced and they were trying to find something effective for the pain. Still the issue really is CLOSE the friggin border, stop it before it gets here. Bomb anywhere there could possibly be tunnels, do the whole thing as a military manuver. Do it hard, and keep it up, until the cartels turn on each other in frustration. Then get serious about the doctors and record keeping. I really love the idea of bombing the heck out of the border, but I know that’s a dream, no one in Washington has the appropriate body parts to do it.

Posted on February 15, 2012 at 9:25amNot on your life buddy.I know it sounds good but will do just the opposite. One doctor decides without proof[paid to bribed to threatened to compliance, given false legal papers to claim sponsorship gaurdianship due to fiduary fraud] that the patient is a drug addict.Perhaps a flimsy excuse something like a simple needle track from regular plasma donation. The person is injured and can’t even hardly get treatment.Any pain meds as an adjunct to treatment would be out the question.
Report Post »Please spare me the rhetoric that this can’t happen.I know with 100% certainty that it can. This certainty is from direct personal experience.

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 11:40pmThe words personal responsibility don’t exist in the liberal world, everything is always someones else’s fault. You order hot coffee and then burn your lips, its the restaurants fault, if you go out and buy drugs. take too many and die, its the pharmacies fault. You go to the liquor store, buy alcohol, drink to much and crash your car, its the liquor stores fault….it goes on and on…..blame everyone but the one truly to blame….I really liked her as an actress, but she sucks as a person………
