I was stationed in Taiwan in 1966 when a biggie hit mainland China. It was the middle of the night and woke up to see my bed sliding across the room. I thought my roommate was playing a joke until I sat up and saw him clinging to his cot for dear life and pale as a ghost.
In 1970 when a big one hit Turkey, I was in Germany. Even though we were that far away, it shook pretty good. I was washing the dishes and all the kitchen cabinets started flying open. I think I summoned about six hands to keep all the things from flying out. Of course it didn’t help that we lived on the 4th floor.

I’ve been in Southern California my whole life (since 1954) and I didn’t feel/notice an earthquake until 1972. I’ve been through quite a few since then, There is nothing you can do to stop it, so you get to a door frame or to a table and ride it out. Panic doesn’t help. Running outside just gives the stuff falling off the building a target.

Japan has noticeable quakes all the time, so you become inured to them…Is it just a rattle, or does it keep getting bigger? You basically pray that last jolt was the biggest one.

The coolest thing was during the S phase, the cabinet he was filming (and the clothes that were hung up) were swinging in a north-south orientation, then when he got around to the light fixture, the Lr (Rayleigh phase) was coming through with particle motion perpendicular to the S. Sweeeeeeet!

To get an idea of the power unleashed – Fox News reported earlier that AN ENTIRE PASSENGER TRAIN was “unaccounted for”! Some train lines in the costal area run close to the coastline – maybe the (30+ foot) tsunami washed it out to sea.

Wow, the guys apartment is now a disaster. But, apparently it was a bit of a disaster before the quake.

Matter of fact, just about every indoor scene video so far shows each place to be a cluttered mess.

    Just a comment.

His apartment appeared to be very, very small. Clutter increases in small places, inevitably.

More generally, those poor people! I was born in California and know the helpless feeling during an earthquake.

On a lighter note, maybe an earthquake like this one could wipe the UNIONS off the map and sweep them all out to sea! No, that would pollute our oceans! lol.

I have experienced an earthquake in California when the Oakland bridge collapsed and it is scary.

What was surprising was that I was touring a secured juvenile facility at the time as part of a graduate course I was taking and we were locked in. I was surprised that noone moved and I was petrified because it was the first time I had experienced an earthquake like that. The floor was moving as if we were in a boat and noone moved or ran toward the doors. It was then that I realized they were used to earthquakes in California. I was frozen. As soon as I could I moved toward the outdoors and stayed there for sometime.

The group returned indoors and that was when we saw on the TV there that the Oakland bridge had sandwiched on itself and people were crushed in their cars there. I couldn’t believe it.

Needless to say, it ruined the whole tour for me because all I could think of was where were my kids. It turned out that they were okay. They had just gone outdoors.

So, the Japanese might be so used to these earthquakes that they do not react as they should do. It’s a phenomenon that is unique to those who suffer these calamities on a regular basis.

It blows my mind that these people live in “earthquake central” and don’t secure their objects! They don’t even duck-and-cover! I’ve watched many of these videos today–one in a grocery store, several in people’s homes, office buildings, etc and I only saw ONE person duck under a desk. Do they not realize that things will fall and hit them on the head? At the grocery store, where stuff was flying off the shelves and smashing to the floor, the workers were trying to steady the shelves! Rather than trying to protect themselves, they were trying to hold back huge metal shelves filled with heavy, breakable items! Are they all INSANE?? They live in tiny little apartments with unsecured shelving units, piled high with stuff, including tv sets, computer monitors, glass items, etc. I lived in so.cal. for 25 years, and when you felt an earthquake, you ducked under your desk and held on for dear life!

Godzilla Warning For Hanzu and Tokyo, Japan!!!!

First reports of Godzilla having been awakened by the earthquake are now coming from northern Japan.

Godzilla is reportedly wading through outlying villages and making his way towards Tokyo at approximately 20 MPH, leaving a wake of destruction in his path.

The Japanese military has been put on high alert.

President Obama has said that his administration is “tightening the noose around Godzilla’s head” and that “it’s time for him (Godzilla) to go.”
