‘Japanese Jesus’ Legend: Christ Escaped to Japan, Was Never Crucified, Had 3 Kids & Died at 106 (Plus: See the Alleged ‘Tomb’!)

Jesus is, no doubt, history’s most talked about figure. While, to many, Christ is a savior who died on the cross to forgive humanity’s sins, there are some other theories surrounding what actually happened to the centerpiece of the Christian faith. Among the more bizarre notions is the allegation that he escaped Jerusalem and, thus, crucifixion, and headed to Shingo, Japan, where he worked as a rice farmer, had a family and died at the age of 114 (some say 106).

The “Japanese Jesus” tale, as The Huffington Post notes, is viewed by many as an absurdity, a hoax and a blasphemous variation of the truth. After all, it‘s widely divergent from the Bible’s tale and, if true, it would literally turn the salvation story on its head. But — interestingly — despite having virtually no historical backing, the story actually has a following.

Grave of Christ Is Said to Be Jesus Christs Tomb in Japan

The BBC reported, in detail, about the theory in 2006, highlighting the fact that there’s a “Grave of Christ” (known as “Kristo no Hakka” by locals) located in Japan — and the site apparently attracts curious visitors from across the globe. The grave is located in the northern countryside of Japan, halfway up a mountain. Curiously, the spot is marked by a large, wooden cross — an odd marker, considering that the theory is hinged upon the notion that Christ never actually perished on the cross.

According to local legend, one of Jesus’ brothers took his place on the cross at Calvary. Then, this brother was somehow buried (at least parts of his body) by Jesus’ side in Japan — yet another theoretical construct that seems counter-intuitive, but is embraced by locals. OddityCentral.com adds:

So the story goes like this – Christ visited Japan between the ages of 21 and 33. Of course, this is conveniently supported by the fact that the Bible skips over large periods of Christ’s early life. He spent this time studying the native language and culture, before returning to Jerusalem. What about the Crucifixion, you ask? Well, it wasn’t Christ that was crucified at all. According to this theory, it was his younger brother Isukiri, who took his place on the cross. In the meantime, Christ fled to Siberia. After a few years, he traveled via Alaska and arrived at the port of Hachinohe, 40km from the village of Shingo.

All of this may be confusing, silly or just plain unfounded. But, The Huffington Post explains where the theory, which has been around for decades, originated:

In 1935, the legend goes, ancient documents were discovered by a Shinto priest that spelled out Jesus‘ activities in Japan’s rural north.

According to the BBC, those documents have long since disappeared (a point which has given rise to innumerable conspiracy theories), though CNN believes local idiosyncrasies give credence to the legend.

Among those: Shingo used to be named “Herai,“ which is only one phoneme away from ”Heburai,” the Japanese word for “Hebrew.” Also, adds CNN, a folk song indigenous to the region doesn’t contain any Japanese words, and sounds an awful lot like Hebrew.

Perhaps of even more interest, the ancient documents purportedly led to the discovery of two tombs. One, according to ABC, is the grave site of Jesus. The other allegedly contains Jesus‘ brother’s ears and a lock of The Blessed Virgin Mary’s hair.

Below, watch one man’s journey to the alleged Jesus tomb (he provides a detailed narration of the theory):

There‘s even a small museum nearby that provides even more information about the Japanese proposal on Jesus’ life. Considering the small percentage of Christians in the country (past polls have shown the proportion to be around only six percent), the presence of such an odd, faith-based legend is fascinating.

Tourism stunt, silly fable — or reality. You decide. Read more about the alleged Jesus tomb here.

Small minds scoff and ridicule things they haven’t taken the time to understand.

God’s creation, the universe, requires a balance in all things to make it work. Because God gave man the gift of free will, and because He loves His creation, He chose to also provide us with a means to counterbalance the sin which results from that gift of free will. The counterbalance is the Gift of Grace, that being the God become man and providing His own death in sacrifice, through which we could all be saved by merely acknowledging that Gift and embracing its significance. Without that Grace, we would all be paying for our own sins to keep His creation in balance, “for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

God is great. Jesus Christ in my Savior, and through His Grace all things are possible.

Blatantly false. If you’re using “evidence” as a cornerstone for your assertion, then one single text from the 1930s has significantly less evidence than several texts by dozens of authors a few thousand years ago.

Delegitimatize Christianity? You mean like a religion that believes that Jesus hung out in Missouri and fought Indians (because Indians are evil), and that blacks are so bad that they weren’t able to take positions in the church hierarchy until 1978, or that there is an alien race living on the moon, or that God lives on the planet Kolob, or that people who follow the faith will be rewarded with their own planet after death? This remindes me that we wrestle not with flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, rulers of darkness and spiritual wickedness in high places. Jezebel is still hard at work to decieve or destroy those that believe the Word of God and to hand the vineyard to her God, which will rule before Christ returns. The pace at which things are taking place around the world should stir an awakening in the truth of God’s Word, and lead many more to salvation; instead it will most likely lead to the falling away described by Christ in the last days. Many of todays churches have already fallen away and I pray for every one of them. If anyone is in a church that requires you to observe practices, recite words, or do works to prove your faith, please pray about it and if it (the church) does not return to the true doctrine found only in God’s Word, get out. Do not associate yourself with Jezebel. His will be done.

This makes me believe that Jesus must be the real thing because Satan and Satan’s followers (who imitate their father) find Jesus Christ a REAL THREAT in order to do these things and say these things. They are working so very hard at it night and day, it makes one wonder why. Why dost thou protest so much? Lots of LDS in my neighborhood so I have plenty of exposure as I have accompanied my kids to their friends baptisms and heard all the wonderful family stories. Waited outside a temple wedding with the parents while their daughter wed inside and they were not allowed to attend their daughters wedding (she and her husband have since become LDS survivors or exmo as some say and apologized to the parents for the wedding day snub) As a result I felt compelled to find out what the LDS is about. Probably researched more than gb did. Nothing to do with politics. And yes I am uncomfortable with an LDS president.

I can’t help but picture Jesus and Lucifer having a classic showdown on the streets in Dodge City, Kansas City or even Tombstone…

Even the dogs are in the shade and you can’t see one single bird in the sky. The saloons are full because of both the heat and the anticipation of the match. Everybody‘s been drinking since opening time and everybody’s overripe and rowdy, but they suddenly quiet down when somebody notices the time. The poor devils outside for their own reasons have cleared the children and emptied the streets of themselves too. Two riders approach the town, one from the north – one from the south. A cooling breeze picks up a little, but it doesn’t do them any justice. All it does is stir the dust up a little and move a few tumbleweeds about. They disembark from their steeds and slowly approach one another, spurs a-janglin’. Purposeful step by step, they’d both be having a cold one somewhere ease if they could. But this one’s different. This one is for all the Glory and Passion. There‘s no turnin’ back and they stop about fifty feet from one another. Their eyes lock for a moment trying to get the edge on one another through peripheral vision through signs of motion. No luck there. They’ve both been at The Game for too long to make a rookie mistake like that. You could cut the air with a knifeblad

The LDS position is that AFTER Jesus rose from the dead and left the Discipline upon his Ascension into Heaven, he appeared in North America to the Native Americans there and preached to them about his life and the God of Abraham and a belief in monotheism. Totally different than a LIVE Jesus going to North America having NOT been crucified or to Japan or the DaVinci Code argument of a pregnant Mary Magdeline escaping to Gaul and settling on the Mediterranian coast.

Now while I don’t believe the LDS position as truth, I can also NOT absolutely rule it out because I wasn’t there and Jesus, as the Son of God, can do WHATEVER he likes, so he might have. The sticking point with the LDS position is that Smith found “secret plates” with “unreadable characters” on them, except by him and to this day ONLY Smith has been able to translate these characters. That just doesn’t sound like a God and a Savior that want the World to understand and know them personally.

So while you might not believe this story or the DaVinci Code or the LDS, don’t equate them as equally valid or invalid. The LDS story is AT LEAST plausible as is the DaVinci Code, given what Christians believe, Christ died on the Cross.

“And if people want to believe the world is flat, who are we to stop them? or that babies come from a cabbage patch, sure”

Unless they’re trying to force me to believe their religious views, who are we to stop them? I’m not a fan of policing people for their beliefs or personal thoughts, no matter how irrational they are. Plenty of countries do so: I don’t want America to be one of them.

“according to political correctness we should never tell anyone they are wrong if it makes them feel good to believe something that could cost them their soul.”

Reread my response. You apparently missed where I said: “I will point out the obvious flaws in their arguments.” Know what I won’t do? Force someone to change their beliefs just because I’m convinced mine are right and theirs are wrong. If they won’t listen or believe, that’s their choice. Jesus said spread the word: he didn’t say “force all to believe.”

      “What’s more important?”

Free will. It’s enough for God, it’s protected by the Constitution, and by golly, it’s good enough for me.

And the fact that you’d force someone else to your viewpoint? That’s your personal belief. I disagree. Luckily, the law, and the Bible, are on my side :-)

Thank you for calling me intellectually honest, as you’ll note I said: “The Church of LDS makes SIMILAR claims.” I’d almost think you were trying to insult me, but that would have meant you either
      A) Did not read my post, or
      B) Are functionally illiterate.

“So while you might not believe this story or the DaVinci Code or the LDS, don’t equate them as equally valid or invalid. The LDS story is AT LEAST plausible as is the DaVinci Code, given what Christians believe, Christ died on the Cross.”

I don’t call LDS, the Da Vinci Code, nor the Japanese Jesus “valid” or “invalid.” I say what I mean: I believe all of those legends are untrue, and that the Bible IS true. Obviously, none of us can say any of these stories as fact; they are matters of faith (well, The Da Vinci Code is a true work of fiction technically, but you get the idea).

Still, if we’re willing to overlook much of the LDS doctrines and accept them as Christians, why not do the same for Japanese Jesus? The legend of Kirisuto no haka still says Jesus was deified and returned to heaven after his death. It’s not the Biblical story, but neither is the idea that us mortal men can become as gods like LDS says.

Well theres the problem. You are talking about what you believe, I am talking about what can be proven true.
The Bible being TRUE does not discount the LDS position in the slightest, since what they state came after the Bible timeline. Nor does the Bible being TRUE discount the DaVinci Code story either. The Bible states nothing about the personal life of Jesus or whether he married or not. We know that some of the Disciples were married, we know that Mary – Jesus’ mother was married and even that he had brothers and sisters, even though it is only mentioned twice in the four Gospels. People assume that Jesus was not because they figure the Gospels or someone would have written about his wife and children otherwise. Remember…Jesus is mentioned at age 12 and then not again until age 33. Most men were married by 20 and dead by 40-50 during this time in history and most women married by 13-16 during this time in history. So Jesus could have had a family, he could have traveled to India or Japan or the “East” as some have suggested.

The point was certain claims are plausible and have validity if you accept their base unverified statements on face value. The Intellectual Honesty comes when you investigate those claims, regardless of your faith and what you believe, to discover the Truth and maybe have to rethink your own belief structure or maybe confirm those beliefs to a higher degree.

Ah, that would be the problem then. Yes, I am talking about my belief. I take it on belief that the Bible is true, precisely because there’s no way to “know” factually (at least until we die, and no one I’ve ever heard of has made it to heaven and back since the time of Jesus Himself).

“The point was certain claims are plausible and have validity if you accept their base unverified statements on face value. Plausible is quite different from possible. Certainly parts of the LDS theory, the Da Vinci conspiracies, and even the Japanese Jesus story are possible. Plausible? Not so much.

REALLY? Do any thinking people really believe this? If so, I guess I’ll construct an“Shrine” on my proprety, claim that Jesus actually sailed to the American continet, became a Native American and was buried by the Cherokee Nation.

BOY, I could make millions, charging admission to see this “Grave”. Of course, that is, if Obama didn’t tax it all.

You only have to look at the source of the story to know it is false. The left is on a major campaign to debunk Christianity and they will stop at nothing. Funny how Satan is using them and they don’t even know it. Or do they?

as a Christian I would obiously have to say I do not think it is Jesus’ tomb, however, if we had to discuss a possibility of Hebrew language showing up in parts of a small Japanese village it wouldn’t be out of question for a follower of Christ to make great travels to spread the word. After all they were told to go to all nations……

I would have to say this story though is a hoax….

“Also, adds CNN, a folk song indigenous to the region doesn’t contain any Japanese words, and sounds an awful lot like Hebrew.”

This comes from people with no linguist training. There are dialects in Japan that don’t sound Japanese at all. You‘d think they’re Chinese or Korean, but they’re just a different flavor in the dialects, similar to how the Northern German dialect and the Bavarian sound like two completely different languages.

The one syllable between Heburai and Herai is irrelevant. Heburai for Hebrew is written in Katakana, since it’s a foreign word, there is no kanji for it on default. Herai on the other hand is written in Kanji, so this is another example of someone writing about his without any linguistic training or language skills.

    This really hurts my brain.

Furthermore, Jesus used Koine Greek not Hebrew Rofl.
The 6 point start “shield of david” was not widley used until at least the 15th century… the title “shield of david” was used in the 11th C as a name for god without the connection to the 6 pointed start…
I mean this story is a joke of inaccuracy.

Does it help them walk a straight path rather than a crooked path? If so, it can‘t be all bad even though it doesn’t quite approach the Father from the right – yet it’s far easier to adjust a straight path regardless of the direction more so than to adjust a crooked path.
