Jay Carney: Republicans Caused Demand for Food Stamps

During Monday night’s GOP debate, Newt Gingrich observed that more Americans have been placed on the food stamps program under President Obama than any other president in the country’s history. Although Gingrich’s assertion was based on the current number of people on food stamps, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney attempted to spin the narrative 180 degrees by saying that it was in fact Republican policies that created the demand for food stamps. He cited a lack of Wall Street regulation as the catalyst.
“The economic policies that contributed to the great recession were supported by and are being proposed by I believe all the [Republican candidates],” Carney said during the press briefing Tuesday. Criticizing Republicans for opposing Dodd-Frank regulations, Carney added, “We look forward to the debate with whomever emerges from the primary process.”
Meanwhile, the Washington Times reports:
A record 45 million people received food stamps last year at a cost of $75 billion. The program, known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, has more than doubled in cost since 2008.
Yet still, when it came to Gingrich’s description of President Obama as the “food stamp president,” Carney said, “The economic policies that helped create [the recession], are the kinds of policies that he [Gingrich] advocates to this day.”

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 7:32pmFor the sake of this country, I beg you to evaluate the need to fix our current economic crisis vs. the need for ‘military’ spending. Military spending does NOT equate a strong ‘defense’ – (i.e., Billion dollar embassies in other countries). Really? How does that keep the U.S. safe?
A strong ‘military’ in a POOR country equals FAILURE… history proves this time and time again!
All of you say you love Ron Paul’s economic savvy, but cannot support him because of his ‘military’ views. Ron Paul knows what is most vital to this country’s survival. He has been trying to teach this lesson to his our representatives for years. Ask yourself…. why do ‘they’ reject’ the obvious (?). Without fear and dependencies on the government, most representatives would not have a platform and a means to milk the system (hint, inside stock trading they are legally allowed to get rich from). Nor would they convince us to vote for them after they’ve wasted our tax money while asking us to pay even more.
Are we willing to follow this path of tyranny or do we FINALLY stand up for the Constitution in 2012?! We should be smarter by now!

I think I would ask them to make up their minds is it because congress would not cooperate with obummer, or is it because bush left him a mess? Because they claim both and have been blaming congress until someone pointed out they had both house and senate and still couldn’t get anything done because they focused on getting obama care and cap n trade, instead of fixing the economy, and creating jobs, and getting tougher with enemies.
Maybe it is because as a local organizer he didn’t have to create jobs, he didn’t have to balance a budget, he didn’t have to do anything presidential and it shows.

This recession, the worst economic situation since the Great Depression, took place seven years into the Bush administration and a full year before President Obama took office. So Obama is retroactively responsible, via a time machine?
Bush had a full year to fix the economy, and yet it got worse and worse, and the deficit exploded, not only because of the economy and reduced government revenues, but also a couple of unfunded wars and an unfunded Medicare program.
And what’s the Republican response? To do more of the same. Let’s just keep doing what Bush did and see if it works this time.

DrFrost
Posted on January 18, 2012 at 10:14amBush expanded government and spent too much money (20% of his budget was borrowed). That certainly didn’t help the situation. But a big part of the problem was over regulation and laws that forced banks to give low interest loans to high risk people (this was mainly done by democrats but there are certainly some republicans that deserve part of this blame as well). By the way, the justice department is still taking banks to court TODAY for not giving enough low interest loans to high risk groups. This was compounded by some other factors. You can blame bush or you can blame the democratic congress…. I don‘t really care because I’d like to vote them all out of office and put in libertarians.
BUT…. the solution to these problems is not to borrow 50% of your budget, it’s not to bury the free market in mounds of new regulations, it’s not to let the EPA run rampant against the will of the people, it’s not to shut down domestic energy production, it’s not to do an end run around of the congress to once again go against the will of the people, etc., etc.
Do you know why so many people love Ron Paul despite his deep seated flaws? It‘s because the left’s solution to every problem involves: higher taxes, more government and less personal freedom. And Americans are sick of it.
The left blames the right and is completely blind to it’s own enormous culpability. The right has it’s own faults including an apparent lack of commitment to what it espouses as it

Posted on January 18, 2012 at 12:23pmNo individual caused the food stamp crisis or this particular economic crisis. It is our polititians who are making money off our hard work. Unfortunately, we have someone today that should be our president that simply does not know how to lead and therefore can’t get us out of this situation.
Report Post »All the stimulus money should have been divided among the tax paying public equally. Half of that money should be forced into a savings account and the other have left up to the taxpayers to take care of their needs. We would have had ‘cash for clunkers’ or bank bailouts or government motors.
Stop the political bittering and follow the constitution. Get behind the efforts of many groups that want an amendment to the constitution that prohibits our government from enacting any law that allows them to live by a different set of rules. As long as they can prosper, our government will continue to cause these and many other problems for working Americans.

Posted on January 18, 2012 at 6:36pmFormer President Bush may have gotten us into this mess but BHO has gotten us in a worse situation than necessary. GW wasn’t able to break the Democratically controlled House to put the proper regulations and restrictions, also thanks to Barney Fwrank, so I think we can man up to that one if we need to satisfy your stupidity. And I will also say it was under GW that this food stamp program was started, but the BHO administration saw a means of expanding it in order to get more people into the government entitlement program and “rights” mentality. I seem to remember it as being offered to military personnel families which were being paid so little that they were part of a gross inequality in pay to other government jobs and it was being used to keep those military families above the poverty level.
At the same time, the left can’t go around and increase an existing program to help those below the poverty line, when there was supposed to be so much hope and change, but everyone just forgot to ask BHO what kind of hope and change we were going to get. The country is optimistic, but unless you were pessimistic you would not have known it was going to be for the worst.

The Libs want to get their grubby hands on it so they can spend it and it gripes them to the point that its all they talk about. If Obama is defeated those companies will let that money be used and invested again with a Conservative government. Lets see what excuses the POTUS has in six months when the people realise NO change in the economy, or his buddies in Europe crashes hard despite the Fed bailing them out and hits us hard, because it will. Lets see how they spin the blame on that one. By then Congress will be so inept that he will just appoint himself the leader of Amerika like his buddies do over in Europe.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 6:49pmThis little weasel embodies the voice of the liberal left. Why don’t you go ask Barnie Frank if he supports the sub-prime mortgage crisis? Ask him to apologize like he demanded Bush do even though Bush tried 17 times to reform Freddie and Fannie. Pretty sure he had a large hand in the crisis and shirks responsibility like a fart in the wind.
I‘m almost positive liberals think that everyone has Alzheimer’s…

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 7:48pmI must point out that you are in error Barber2! Obama’s record is NOT broken. It like all his other records, is sealed/misplaced/unavailable/hidden…etc etc. But not broken. You must get with the program and stick your head up your posterior while saying to yourself “Obama is the smartest President evah!” And maybe just maybe, while your head is where Obama voters heads have been for 4 years, you may find his grades from grammar school, or even his original long form birth certificate. They HAVE to be somewhere after all…

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 6:42pmThe fact that Obama can’t get the word “trillion” out of his vocabulary – every time he asks for something – has … nothing to do with that. No. It couldn’t have. Spending more in his presidency than – ALL the other presidents combined. No… why it’s those evil Republicans. (shakes head)

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 6:41pmI reckon we will see in 2013 when a Republican takes office and the economy rebounds and jobs come back and food stamp usage goes down. Then it will become clear and you think we would learn.
But no…We didn’t learn through the 80s either…

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 7:12pmEven then the Dems will just say the Republican only inherited Obama’s recovery, just like they keep repeating that Obama inherited Bush’s (really the Democrat Congress’s) problem.
We don’t learn because the Dems have so destroyed our educational institutions through the Department of Education that our young people no longer question everything they hear from their government. They’re only taught to listen to their government and fall in line, and ridicule all who don’t.
